Design of the EIC hadron storage ring stripline injection kicker with a novel impedance tuning capability

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory, will be a high luminosity (~10 34 cm –2 s –1 ) nuclear science facility. To facilitate EIC experiments, the existing yellow ring of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) will be reconfigured to serve as the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR). Designing a stripline injection kicker for the HSR beams, with high magnetic rigidity (~ 82 Tm), poses some technical challenges due to the required large pulsed voltage with long flattop duration, very fast rise time, expected shorter bunch spacing, and potential heating due to higher peak current. In addition, minimizing impedance mismatch in the transition region between the feedthrough and the stripline electrode is challenging. This paper focuses on the mechanical design and optimization of the HSR injection kicker, highlighting a novel impedance tuning capability achieved through an innovative kicker aperture adjustment mechanism. We comprehensively cover the design, including impedance optimization (both beam coupling and characteristic), beam-induced heating, and thermal analysis, and investigation of the maximum electric field due to high voltage signal excitation to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Bayesian calibration of a hybrid nuclear collision model using $\textit{p}$₋Pb and Pb-Pb data at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Here, we posit a unified hydrodynamic and microscopic description of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in ultrarelativistic p₋Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}_\text{NN}$ = 5.02 TeV and evaluate our assertion using Bayesian inference. Specifically, we model the dynamics of both collision systems using initial conditions with parametric nucleon substructure, a preequilibrium free streaming stage, event-by-event viscous hydrodynamics, and a microscopic hadronic afterburner. Free parameters of the model, which describe the initial state and QGP medium are then simultaneously calibrated to fit charged-particle yields, mean $p_T$, and flow cumulants. We argue that the global agreement of the calibrated model with the experimental data strongly supports the existence of hydrodynamic flow in small collision systems at ultrarelativistic energies, and that the flow produced develops at length scales smaller than a single proton. Posterior estimates for the model's input parameters are obtained, and new insights into the temperature dependence of the QGP transport coefficients and event-by-event structure of the proton are discussed.

Strange hadron production in $pp$ and $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The transverse momentum ( p T ) distributions of Λ , Ξ - , and Ω - baryons, their antiparticles, and K S 0 mesons are measured in proton-proton ( p p ) and proton-lead ( p Pb ) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV over a broad rapidity range. The data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 40.2 nb - 1 and 15.6 μ b - 1 for p p and p Pb collisions, respectively, were collected by the CMS experiment. The nuclear modification factor R p Pb , which is defined as the ratio of the particle yield in p Pb collisions and a scaled p p reference, is measured for each particle. A strong dependence on particle species is observed in the p T range from 2 to 7 GeV, where R p Pb for K S 0 is consistent with unity, while an enhancement ordered by strangeness content and/or particle mass is observed for the three baryons. In p Pb collisions, the strange hadron production is asymmetric about the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass rapidity. Enhancements, which depend on the particle type, are observed in the direction of the Pb beam. The results are compared with predictions from epos lhc , which includes parametrized radial flow. The model is in qualitative agreement with the R p Pb data, but fails to describe the dependence on particle species in the yield asymmetries measured away from midrapidity in p Pb collisions.

Bayesian inference of the dense-matter equation of state encapsulating a first-order hadron-quark phase transition from observables of canonical neutron stars

The remarkable progress in recent multimessenger observations of both isolated neutron stars (NSs) and their mergers has provided some of the much needed data to improve our understanding about the equation of state (EOS) of dense neutron-rich matter. Various EOSs with or without some kinds of phase transitions from hadronic to quark matter (QM) have been widely used in many forward modelings of NS properties. Direct comparisons of these predictions with observational data sometimes also using χ 2 minimizations have provided very useful constraints on the model EOSs. Furthermore, it is normally difficult to perform uncertain quantifications and analyze correlations of the EOS model parameters involved in forward modelings especially when the available data are still very limited.

O 16 O 16 collisions at energies available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and at the CERN Large Hadron Collider comparing α clustering versus substructure

Collisions of . light and heavy nuclei in relativistic heavy-ion collisions have been shown to be sensitive to nuclear structure. With a proposed 16 O 16 O run at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) we study the potential for finding α clustering in 16 O. Here we use the state-of-the-art iEBE-VISHNU package with 16 O nucleonic configurations from ab initio nuclear lattice simulations. This setup was tuned using a Bayesian analysis on p Pb and PbPb systems. We find that the 16 O 16 O system always begins far from equilibrium and that at LHC and RHIC it approaches the regime of hydrodynamic applicability only at very late times. Finally, by taking ratios of flow harmonics we are able to find measurable differences between α-clustering, nucleonic, and subnucleonic degrees of freedom in the initial state.

Centrality and transverse-momentum dependence of higher-order flow harmonics of identified hadrons in Au+Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Here we present high-precision measurements of elliptic, triangular, and quadrangular flow v 2 , v 3 , and v 4 , respectively, at midrapidity for identified hadrons π, p, K, φ, K s , Λ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy √ s NN = 200 GeV. We observe similar v n trends between light and strange mesons which indicates that the heavier strange quarks flow as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. The number-of-constituent-quark scaling for v 2 , v 3 , and v 4 is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for 0–10%, 10–40%, and 40–80% collision centrality intervals. The results are compared to several viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying initial conditions, and could serve as an additional constraint to the development of hydrodynamic models.

Embedding a critical point in a hadron to quark-gluon crossover equation of state

Lattice QCD simulations have shown unequivocally that the transition from hadrons to quarks and gluons is a crossover when the baryon chemical potential is zero or small. Many model calculations predict the existence of a critical point at a value of the chemical potential where current lattice simulations are unreliable. We show how to embed a critical point in a smooth background equation of state so as to yield the critical exponents and critical amplitude ratios expected of a transition in the same universality class as the liquid-gas phase transition and the three-dimensional Ising model. There are only two independent critical exponents; the relations α + 2β + γ = 2 and β(δ-1) = γ arise automatically, as does a relation between the two critical amplitudes. The resulting equation of state has parameters that may be inferred by hydrodynamic modeling of heavy-ion collisions in the Beam Energy Scan II at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider or in experiments at other accelerators.

Two-particle transverse momentum correlations in p p and p -Pb collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Two-particle transverse momentum differential correlators, recently measured in Pb-Pb collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), provide an additional tool to gain insights into particle production mechanisms and infer transport properties, such as the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, of the medium created in Pb-Pb collisions. The longitudinal long-range correlations and the large azimuthal anisotropy measured at low transverse momenta in small collision systems, namely pp and p-Pb, at LHC energies resemble manifestations of collective behavior. This suggests that locally equilibrated matter may be produced in these small collision systems, similar to what is observed in Pb-Pb collisions. In this work, the same two-particle transverse momentum differential correlators are exploited in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, respectively, to seek evidence for viscous effects. Specifically, the strength and shape of the correlators are studied as a function of the produced particle multiplicity to identify evidence for longitudinal broadening that might reveal the presence of viscous effects in these smaller systems. The measured correlators and their evolution from pp and p-Pb to Pb-Pb collisions are additionally compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators, and the potential presence of viscous effects is discussed.

Jet-hadron correlations with respect to the event plane in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions in STAR

Angular distributions of charged particles relative to jet axes are studied in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions as a function of the jet orientation with respect to the event plane. This differential study tests the expected path-length dependence of energy loss experienced by a hard-scattered parton as it traverses the hot and dense medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. A second-order event plane is used in the analysis as an experimental estimate of the reaction plane formed by the collision impact parameter and the beam direction. Charged-particle jets with 15 < 𝑝 T,jet < 20 and 20 < 𝑝 T,jet < 40 ⁢GeV/𝑐 were reconstructed with the anti-𝑘 T algorithm with radius parameter setting of 𝑅 = 0.4 in the 20–50% centrality bin to maximize the initial-state eccentricity of the interaction region. The reaction plane fit method is implemented to remove the flow-modulated background with better precision than prior methods. Yields and widths of jet-associated charged-hadron distributions are extracted in three angular bins between the jet axis and the event plane. The event-plane (EP) dependence is further quantified by ratios of the associated yields in different EP bins. No dependence on orientation of the jet axis with respect to the event plane is seen within the uncertainties in the kinematic regime studied. This finding is consistent with a similar experimental observation by ALICE in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collision data.

Measurement of forward charged hadron flow harmonics in peripheral PbPb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV with the LHCb detector

Flow harmonic coefficients, v n , which are the key to studying the hydrodynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in heavy-ion collisions, have been measured in various collision systems and kinematic regions and using various particle species. The study of flow harmonics in a wide pseudorapidity range is particularly valuable to understand the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the QGP. This paper presents the first LHCb results of the second- and the third-order flow harmonic coefficients of charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum in the forward region, corresponding to pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.9, using the data collected from PbPb collisions in 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV . The coefficients measured using the two-particle angular correlation analysis method are smaller than the central-pseudorapidity measurements at ALICE and ATLAS from the same collision system but share similar features. ©2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Chiral condensate and the equation of state at nonzero baryon density from the hadron resonance gas model with a repulsive mean field

We study the QCD equation of state and the chiral condensate using the hadron resonance gas model with repulsive mean-field interactions. We find that the repulsive interactions improve the agreement with the lattice results on the derivatives of the pressure with respect to the baryon chemical potential up to eighth order. From the temperature dependence of the chiral condensate we estimate the crossover temperature as a function of baryon chemical potential, T p c ( μ B ) . We find that the chiral crossover line starts to deviate significantly from the chemical freeze-out line already for μ B > 400 MeV . Furthermore, we find that the chiral pseudocritical line can be parametrized as T p c ( μ B ) / T p c ( 0 ) = 1 − κ 2 [ μ B / T p c ( 0 ) ] 2 − κ 4 [ μ B / T p c ( 0 ) ] 4 with κ 2 = 0.0150 ( 2 ) and κ 4 = 3.1 ( 6 ) × 10 − 5 , which are in agreement with lattice QCD results for small values of μ B . For the first time we find a tiny but nonzero value of κ 4 in our study. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

New metric improving Bayesian calibration of a multistage approach studying hadron and inclusive jet suppression

We study parton energy-momentum exchange with the quark gluon plasma (QGP) within a multistage approach composed of in-medium Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution at high virtuality, and (linearized) Boltzmann transport formalism at lower virtuality. This multistage simulation is then calibrated in comparison with high- p T charged hadrons, D mesons, and the inclusive jet nuclear modification factors, using Bayesian model-to-data comparison, to extract the virtuality-dependent transverse momentum broadening transport coefficient q ̂ . To facilitate this undertaking, we develop a quantitative metric for validating the Bayesian workflow, which is used to analyze the sensitivity of various model parameters to individual observables. The usefulness of this new metric in improving Bayesian model emulation is shown to be highly beneficial for future such analyses. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Probing nuclear structure of heavy ions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

We perform high-statistics simulations to study the impacts of nuclear structure on the ratios of anisotropic flow observables in 208 Pb + 208 Pb and 129 Xe + 129 Xe collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Even with 40% difference in atomic numbers between 208 Pb and 129 Xe nuclei, the ratios of anisotropic flow in the same centrality class between the two collision systems are strongly affected by the nuclear structure inputs in the initial state. The ratios of v 2 ⁡{4}/v 2 ⁡{2} in these collisions are sensitive to the nuclear skin thickness of the colliding nuclei, providing indirect constraints on the nuclei's neutron skin. In conclusion, our model predictions serve as a benchmark to compare with experimental measurements.

$\mathcal{g}$ modes of neutron stars with hadron-to-quark crossover transitions

Here we perform the first study of the principal core g-mode oscillation in hybrid stars containing quark matter, utilizing a crossover model for the hadron-to-quark transition inspired by lattice QCD. The ensuing results are compared with our recent findings of g-mode frequencies in hybrid stars with a first-order phase transition using Gibbs constructions. We find that models using Gibbs construction yield g-mode amplitudes and the associated gravitational energy radiated that dominate over those of the chosen crossover model owing to the distinct behaviors of the equilibrium and adiabatic sound speeds in the various models. Based on our results, we conclude that were g modes to be detected in upgraded LIGO and Virgo detectors it would indicate a first-order phase transition akin to a Gibbs construction.

Quantum entanglement and the thermal hadron

This paper tests how effectively the bound states of strongly-interacting gauge theories are amenable to an emergent description as a thermal ensemble. This description can be derived from a conjectured minimum free-energy principle, with the entanglement entropy of two-parton subsystems playing the role of thermodynamic entropy. This allows us to calculate the ground-state hadron spectrum and wave function over a wide range of parton masses without solving the Schrödinger equation. We carry out this analysis for certain illustrative models in (1+1) dimensions and discuss prospects for higher dimensions.

Light-quark connected intermediate-window contributions to the muon 𝑔 − 2 hadronic vacuum polarization from lattice QCD

We present a lattice-QCD calculation of the light-quark connected contribution to window observables associated with the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a^{HVP,LO}_μ$. We employ the MILC Collaboration’s isospin-symmetric QCD gauge-field ensembles, which contain four flavors of dynamical highly improved staggered quarks with four lattice spacings between $a ≈ 0.06-0.15$ fm and close-to-physical quark masses. We consider several effective-field-theory-based schemes for finite volume and other lattice corrections and combine the results via Bayesian model averaging to obtain robust estimates of the associated systematic uncertainties. After unblinding, our final results for the intermediate and "W2" windows are $a^{U,W}_μ$(conn) = 206.6(1.0) x 10 -10 and $a^{U,W2}_μ$ (conn) = 100.7(3.2) x 10 -10 , respectively

Search for the rare hadronic decay $B^0_s → p\overline{p}$

A search for the rare hadronic decay B s 0 → p p ¯ is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb - 1 . No evidence of the decay is found and an upper limit on its branching fraction is set at B ( B s 0 → p p ¯ ) < 4.4 ( 5.1 ) × 10 - 9 at 90% (95%) confidence level; this is currently the world’s best upper limit. The decay mode B 0 → p p ¯ is measured with very large significance, confirming the first observation by the LHCb experiment in 2017. The branching fraction is determined to be B ( B 0 → p p ¯ ) = ( 1.27 ± 0.15 ± 0.05 ± 0.04 ) × 10 - 8 , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the external branching fraction of the normalization channel B 0 → K + π - . The combination of the two LHCb measurements of the B 0 → p p ¯ branching fraction yields B ( B 0 → p p ¯ ) = ( 1.27 ± 0.13 ± 0.05 ± 0.03 ) × 10 - 8 .

Search for direct pair production of supersymmetric partners of τ leptons in the final state with two hadronically decaying τ leptons and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for the direct production of a pair of $τ$ sleptons, the supersymmetric partners of $τ$ leptons, is presented. Each $τ$ slepton is assumed to decay to a $τ$ lepton and the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), which is assumed to be stable and to not interact in the detector, leading to an imbalance in the total reconstructed transverse momentum. The search is carried out in events identified as containing two $τ$ leptons, each decaying to one or more hadrons and a neutrino, and significant transverse momentum imbalance. In addition to scenarios in which the $τ$ sleptons decay promptly, the search also addresses scenarios in which the $τ$ sleptons have sufficiently long lifetimes to give rise to nonprompt $τ$ leptons. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC with the CMS detector in 2016–2018, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . No significant excess is seen with respect to standard model expectations. Upper limits on cross sections for the pair production of $τ$ sleptons are obtained in the framework of simplified models. In a scenario in which the $τ$ sleptons are superpartners of left-handed $τ$ leptons, and each undergoes a prompt decay to a $τ$ lepton and a nearly massless LSP, $τ$ slepton masses between 115 and 340 GeV are excluded. In a scenario in which the lifetime of the $τ$ sleptons corresponds to c$τ$ 0 = 0.1 mm, where $τ_{0}$ represents the mean proper lifetime of the $τ$ slepton, masses between 150 and 220 GeV are excluded.
