Radio Frequency Field Programable Gate Array Implementation of Reflectometry Cable Monitoring

This document describes the development of a field programable gate array (FPGA) radio frequency system on a chip (RF SoC) adaptation and evaluation of the single-board device to perform both Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) and Spread Spectrum Time Domain Reflectometry (SSTDR) for offline and online cable testing. The work builds on and leverages the work of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in airport millimeter wave technology by using the same development hardware employed in that program. The work is performed under sponsorship from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) program and the task objective is to confirm and demonstrate feasibility to adapt FPGA technology for a cost-effective multiplexed single-board electronic module to perform cable tests that are equivalent to commercial and laboratory test instruments for FDR and SSTDR cable tests. The developed 2-channel (extendable to 7 channels) system was compared to dedicated and proven test instruments and shown to produce equivalent results on a range of cables and with a range of damage types. The FPGA reflectometry test board is one of several technologies that could facilitate implementation of online monitoring of safety critical cable systems.

Numerical gate synthesis for quantum heuristics on bosonic quantum processors

There is a recent surge of interest and insights regarding the interplay of quantum optimal control and variational quantum algorithms. We study the framework in the context of qudits which are, for instance, definable as controllable electromagnetic modes of a superconducting cavity system coupled to a transmon. By employing recent quantum optimal control approaches described in (Petersson and Garcia, 2021), we showcase control of single-qudit operations up to eight states, and two-qutrit operations, mapped respectively onto a single mode and two modes of the resonator. We discuss the results of numerical pulse engineering on the closed system for parametrized gates useful to implement Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) for qudits. The results show that high fidelity ( > 0.99) is achievable with sufficient computational effort for most cases under study, and extensions to multiple modes and open, noisy systems are possible. The tailored pulses can be stored and used as calibrated primitives for a future compiler in circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) systems.

The Digital Mirror Langmuir Probe: Field Programmable Gate Array Implementation of Real-Time Langmuir Probe Biasing

High bandwidth, high spatial resolution measurements of electron temperature, density and plasma potential are valuable for resolving turbulence in the boundary plasma of tokamaks. While conventional Langmuir probes can provide such measurements either their temporal or spatial resolution is limited: the former by the sweep rate necessary for obtaining I-V characteristics and the latter by the need to use multiple electrodes, as is the case in triple and double probe configurations. The Mirror Langmuir Probe (MLP) bias technique overcomes these limitations by rapidly switching the voltage on a single electrode cycling between three bias states, each dynamically optimised for the local plasma conditions. The MLP system on Alcator C-Mod used analog circuitry to perform this function, measuring Te, VF, and Isat at 1.1 MSPS. Recently, a new prototype digital MLP controller has been implemented on a Red Pitaya Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) board which reproduces the functionality of the original controller and performs all data acquisition. There is also the potential to provide the plasma parameters externally for use with feedback control systems. The use of FPGA technology means the system is readily customisable at a fraction of the development time and implementation cost. A second Red Pitaya was used to test the MLP by simulating the current response of a physical probe using C-Mod experimental measurements. This project is available as a git repository to facilitate extensibility (e.g. real-time control outputs, more voltage states) and scalability through collaboration.

System and method for micromechanical logical and gate

The present disclosure relates to a mechanical AND-gate logic system that may make use of a first and second lever arms, a first pivot linkage coupling the lever arms, an output member, and a second pivot linkage coupling the second lever arm to the output member. The first lever arm has first and second spaced apart ends for independently receiving separate logic level 1 or logic level 0 input signals thereon, and an output end spaced apart from the first and second input ends. The output end is disposed generally equidistant from the first and second spaced apart ends. The second lever arm has an input end and an output end and can move in both pivoting and translating movements. The first pivot linkage couples the output end of the first lever arm to the input end of the second lever arm such that both the input end and the output end of the second lever arm are able to either pivot and or to translate. The second lever arm is only able to translate and apply a logic 1 level input signal to the output member, to thus generate a logic 1 level output signal, when a logic level 1 input signal is applied simultaneously to both of the first and second input ends of the first lever arm.

Field Programmable Gate Array Data Capture for Control Systems

Some Industrial Control Systems (ICS) networks are based on protocols such as Serial and Industrial Ethernet. These protocols currently have no existing cybersecurity monitoring tools, leaving a large gap in the cyber defense of critical infrastructure. In order to analyze such ICS traffic, it is first necessary to implement methods of capturing the ICS data. Whereas traditional methods of analyzing data would use microprocessors, the nature of high-speed analog data can be difficult to implement on such a versatile processor, as they are rather inefficient for doing a single task. Whereas Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) provide an adequate tool in analyzing high speed data, as despite the lack of program versatility, Programmable Logic can implement a solution with minimal clock cycles, allowing time for each new packet of data to be captured before a new data sample is taken.

Gated Molecular Diffusion at Liquid–Liquid Interfaces

Abstract The jamming of nanoparticle surfactants (NPSs) at liquid–liquid interface imparts attractive properties to the interfacial assemblies and enables the structuring of liquids. Herein, we report photoresponsive supramolecular microcapsules with jammed NPS assemblies at the oil‐water interface, taking advantage of host–guest molecular recognition. The permeability of the colloidal membrane can be effectively manipulated by switching the NPSs from a jammed state to an unjammed state with a photo trigger, leading to a controlled molecular diffusion and release, affording a versatile platform for the construction of next generation smart microcapsule systems.

Measuring qubit stability in a gate-based NISQ hardware processor

Some of the most problematic issues that limit the implementation of applications on Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) machines are the adverse impacts of both incoherent and coherent errors. We conducted an in-depth study of coherent errors on a quantum hardware platform using a transverse field Ising model Hamiltonian as a sample user application. We report here on the results from these computations using several error mitigation protocols that profile these errors and provide an indication of the hardware qubit stability. Through a detailed set of measurements we identify inter-day and intra-day qubit calibration drift and the impacts of quantum circuit placement on groups of qubits in different physical locations on the processor. This paper also discusses how these measurements can provide a better understanding of these types of errors and how they may improve efforts to validate the accuracy of quantum computations.

Cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment of advanced composite panels incorporating CO 2 -derived multi-walled carbon nanotubes and hemp fiber for sustainable building applications

Advanced composite panels represent a promising pathway to reducing carbon emissions in the construction industry, yet comprehensive environmental impact assessments remain limited. Here, in this study, we conduct a life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of innovative composite panels produced from multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), hemp fiber (HF), recycled carbon fiber (rCF), and recycled polypropylene (PP), exploring their potential as baseline structural equivalents to conventional gypsum board. MWCNTs and HF play a critical role in sequestering carbon during raw material production, while the recycling processes for CF and PP generally require less energy compared to virgin material production. The LCA evaluates environmental performance using the TRACI 2.1 method, covering global warming potential (GWP), ozone depletion, smog formation, acidification, eutrophication, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects, respiratory impacts, ecotoxicity, and fossil fuel depletion. Compositional variations—resin type (virgin vs. recycled), rCF content (9–29 wt%), and HF content (10–30 wt%)—are introduced for sensitivity and hotspot analyses. Results demonstrate that, when compared on the basis of preliminary structural equivalence, increasing recycled PP, rCF, and HF content can significantly reduce global warming potential compared to gypsum board. Beyond carbon reduction, the composite panels show trade-offs across other environmental categories. With the growing demand for composite materials in interior panels, ceiling systems, and exterior claddings, these findings highlight the environmental benefits and potential trade-offs of the proposed composites, establishing a foundational framework to support their continued development toward full building-system integration.

Concurrent characterization of GaN MOSHEMT gate leakage via electrical and thermoreflectance measurements

In this work, we report the first concurrent use of electrical and thermal characterization, via thermoreflectance, to analyze Time Dependent Dielectric Breakdown in GaN MOSHEMTs. Electrically stressing the devices until a failure occurs, then evaluating them via thermoreflectance, revealed a geometric dependence of the failure mode. Further, all soft breakdowns occurred at the mesa edge where the electric field strength was at its strongest, and tunneling current density was at its highest. This breakdown phenomenon at the mesa edge has been seen previously in GaN HEMTs employing a mesa architecture. Possible approaches to mitigate these failures in MOSHEMTs are proposed.
