R ( 3780 ) Resonance Interpreted as the 1 D 1 3 -Wave Dominant State of Charmonium from Precise Measurements of the Cross Section of e + e − → Hadrons

We report the precise measurements of the cross section of e + e − → hadrons at center-of-mass energies from 3.645 to 3.871 GeV. We thereby perform the most precise study of the cross sections and find a complex system composed of three resonances of R ( 3760 ) , R ( 3780 ) , and R ( 3810 ) . For the first time, we measure the R ( 3810 ) electronic width to be ( 19.4 ± 7.4 ± 12.1 ) eV . For the R ( 3760 ) resonance, we measure the mass to be ( 3751.9 ± 3.8 ± 2.8 ) MeV / c 2 , the total width to be ( 32.8 ± 5.8 ± 8.7 ) MeV , and the electronic width to be ( 184 ± 75 ± 86 ) eV . For the R ( 3780 ) resonance, we measure its mass to be ( 3778.7 ± 0.5 ± 0.3 ) MeV / c 2 , total width to be ( 20.3 ± 0.8 ± 1.7 ) MeV , and electronic width to be ( 265 ± 67 ± 83 ) eV . Forty-seven years ago, the ψ ( 3770 ) resonance was discovered, and was subsequently interpreted as the 1 D 1 3 -wave dominant state of charmonium. However, our analysis of the total-hadron cross sections indicates that the ψ ( 3770 ) is not a single state, but a complex system composed of the R ( 3760 ) , R ( 3780 ) , and R ( 3810 ) resonances. Among these, we interpret the R ( 3780 ) is a resonance dominated by the 1 D 1 3 charmonium state. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Observation of an Axial-Vector State in the Study of the Decay ψ ( 3686 ) → ϕ η η ′

Using ( 2712.4 ± 14.3 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, a partial wave analysis of the decay ψ ( 3686 ) → ϕ η η ′ is performed with the covariant tensor approach. In addition to the established states h 1 ( 1900 ) and ϕ ( 2170 ) , an axial-vector state with a mass near 2.3 GeV / c 2 is observed for the first time. Its mass and width are measured to be 2316 ± 9 stat ± 3 0 syst MeV / c 2 and 89 ± 1 5 stat ± 2 6 syst MeV , respectively. The product branching fractions of B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → X ( 2300 ) η ′ ] B [ X ( 2300 ) → ϕ η ] and B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → X ( 2300 ) η ] B [ X ( 2300 ) → ϕ η ′ ] are determined to be ( 4.8 ± 1.3 stat ± 0.7 syst ) × 10 − 6 and ( 2.2 ± 0.7 stat ± 0.7 syst ) × 10 − 6 , respectively. The branching fraction B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → ϕ η η ′ ] is measured for the first time to be ( 3.14 ± 0.1 7 stat ± 0.2 4 syst ) × 10 − 5 . The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Observation of the W -Annihilation Process D s + → ω ρ + and Measurement of D s + → ϕ ρ + in D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 Decays

We present the first amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of the decay D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 , using e + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33 fb − 1 , and report the first observation of the pure W -annihilation decay D s + → ω ρ + with a branching fraction of ( 0.99 ± 0.0 8 stat − 0.07 + 0.05 syst ) % . In comparison to the low significance of the D wave in the decay D s + → ϕ ρ + , the dominance of the D wave over the S and P waves, with a fraction of ( 51.85 ± 7.2 8 stat − 7.90 + 4.83 syst ) % observed in the decay D s + → ω ρ + , provides crucial information for the “polarization puzzle,” as well as for the understanding of charm meson decays. The branching fraction of D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 is measured to be ( 4.41 ± 0.1 5 stat ± 0.1 3 syst ) % . Moreover, the branching fraction of D s + → ϕ ρ + is measured to be ( 3.98 ± 0.3 3 stat − 0.19 + 0.21 syst ) % , and the R ϕ = B ( ϕ → π + π − π 0 ) / B ( ϕ → K + K − ) is determined to be ( 0.222 ± 0.01 9 stat − 0.016 + 0.016 syst ), which is consistent with the previous measurement based on charm meson decays, but deviates from the results from e + e − annihilation and K − N scattering experiments by more than 3 σ . Normalized Solar-Induced Fluorescence Responds Earlier Than Vegetation Indices to the 2019 North China Plain Drought

Recently, solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) from satellites has shown potential for evaluating vegetation status and stress responses. Fluorescence quantum yield ($Φ_F$) is essentially linked to vegetation stress. However, the complex physiological and structural responses of SIF and $Φ_F$ to drought need further study. This study normalized SIF as SIFn to account for angular variations and fluctuations in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), aiming for more accurate drought monitoring. SIFn anomalies were compared to historical baselines (2019–2021 averages) of vegetation indices (VIs), raw SIF, and $Φ_F$ during a 2019 drought in the North China Plain (NCP). Here, the results show SIFn provides an effective method for drought monitoring, showing the earliest decline compared to raw SIF, VIs, and $Φ_F$. In the first two weeks of drought, SIFn decreased by 8.2%, 7.0%, 12.5%, and 8.2% across the four NCP subdivisions. SIFn outperformed other indicators, proving sensitive to early drought detection. SIFn was also examined for tracking drought alleviation by rainfall. The uncertainty under different viewing geometries was quantified. SIFn anomalies showed a strong correlation with rainfall anomalies (R: 0.45 ~ 0.52) and meteorological factors like PAR (R: 0.80 ~ 0.84) and relative humidity (R:0.52 ~ 0.54). The correlation of near-infrared reflectance (NIRv) and $Φ_F$ anomalies with SIF was weak during drought onset (R: 0.16 ~ 0.32) but strong at the end (R: 0.83 ~ 0.87). These suggest both canopy structure (mainly characterized by NIRv) and vegetation chlorophyll ($Φ_F$) are impacted by drought and influence SIF at different stages.

Measurement of the absolute branching fraction of the inclusive decay $\Lambda _c^+ \rightarrow K_S^0X$: (BESIII Collaboration)

We report the first measurement of the absolute branching fraction of the inclusive decay Λ c + → K S 0 X . The analysis is performed using an e + e - collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 567 pb - 1 taken at s = 4.6 GeV with the BESIII detector. Using eleven Cabibbo-favored Λ ¯ c - decay modes and the double-tag technique, this absolute branching fraction is measured to be B ( Λ c + → K S 0 X ) = ( 9.9 ± 0.6 ± 0.4 ) % , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The relative deviation between the branching fractions for the inclusive decay and the observed exclusive decays is ( 18.7 ± 8.3 ) % , which indicates that there may be some unobserved decay modes with a neutron or excited baryons in the final state.

Improved measurement of the strong-phase difference $\delta _D^{K\pi }$ in quantum-correlated $D{\overline{D}}$ decays

The decay D → K - π + is studied in a sample of quantum-correlated D$\overline{D}$ pairs, based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb -1 collected at the ψ(3770) resonance by the BESIII experiment. The asymmetry between CP-odd and CP-even eigenstate decays into K - π + is determined to be A Kπ = 0.132 ± 0.011 ± 0.007, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This measurement is an update of an earlier study exploiting additional tagging modes, including several decay modes involving a $K^{0}_{L}$ meson. The branching fractions of the $K^{0}_{L}$ modes are determined as input to the analysis in a manner that is independent of any strong phase uncertainty. Using the predominantly CP-even tag D → π + π - π 0 and the ensemble of CP-odd eigenstate tags, the observable $A^{πππ^0}_{Kπ}$ is measured to be 0.130 ± 0.012 ± 0.008. The two asymmetries are sensitive to $r^{Kπ}_{D}$ cos $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$ where $r^{Kπ}_{D}$ and $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$ are the ratio of amplitudes and phase difference, respectively, between the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed and Cabibbo-favoured decays. In addition, events containing D → K - π + tagged by D → $K^{0}_{S,L}$π + π - are studied in bins of phase space of the three-body decays. This analysis has sensitivity to both $r^{Kπ}_{D}$ cos $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$ and $r^{Kπ}_{D}$, sin $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$. A fit to A Kπ , $A^{πππ^0}_{Kπ}$ and the phase-space distribution of the D → $K^{0}_{S,L}$π + π - tags yields $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$ = ($187.6^{+8.9+5.4}_{-9.7-6.4}$)°, where external constraints are applied for $r^{Kπ}_{D}$ and other relevant parameters. This is the most precise measurement of $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$ in quantum-correlated D$\overline{D}$ decays.

High-Power Lithium Metal Batteries Enabled by High-Concentration Acetonitrile-Based Electrolytes with Vinylene Carbonate Additive

To enable next-generation high power, high-energy-density lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs), an electrolyte possessing both high Li Coulombic efficiency (CE) at high-rate and good anodic stability on cathodes is critical. Acetonitrile (AN) is a well-known organic solvent for high anodic stability and high ionic conductivity, yet its application in LMBs is limited due to its poor compatibility with Li metal anode even at high salt concentration conditions. Here, we developed a highly concentrated AN-based electrolyte with vinylene carbonate (VC) additive to suppress Li+ depletion at high current densities. Addition of VC in the AN-based electrolyte leads to the formation of a polycarbonate-based solid electrolyte interphase which minimizes Li corrosion and leads to very high Li CE of up to 99.1% at a current density of 0.2 mA cm-2. Using such an electrolyte, fast charging of Li||NMC333 cells has been realized at a high current density of 3.6 mA cm-2, and stable cycling of Li||NMC622 cells with a high cathode loading of 4 mAh cm-2 has also been demonstrated.

A Generic Sacrificial Layer for Wide-Range Freestanding Oxides with Modulated Magnetic Anisotropy

Freestanding oxide nanomembranes have promising applications because of their novel electronic states and flexible crystalline structures. Several materials have been developed as sacrificial layers to exfoliate thin films from substrates via wet-etching. However, these materials face great challenges in terms of either complicated crystalline structures or corrosive solutions. Herein, a new sacrificial material, SrCoO 2.5 , is presented, which can be coherently grown with wide-range strains and crystalline orientations and is also soluble in eco-friendly solutions such as acetic acid, vinegar, and even carbonated drinks. With SrCoO 2.5 as the sacrificial layer, high-quality freestanding ferromagnetic SrRuO 3 membranes are achieved from wide-range epitaxial strains and different crystalline orientations. By investigating the evolution of the magnetic properties of these samples, it is discovered that epitaxial strain causes a distinct modification of the magnetic anisotropy of (001) pc -oriented SrRuO 3 samples, while its influence on the (110) pc and (111) pc samples is insignificant. This study not only demonstrates the freestanding SrRuO 3 as a promising material for flexible spintronic devices, but also offers a great opportunity to engineer a wide range of strained and oriented complex oxides for novel freestanding electronics using this newly developed sacrificial material.

One–Step Fabrication of Nanocrystalline Nanonetwork SnO 2 Gas Sensors by Integrated Multilaser Processing

An integrated multilaser process is developed to fabricate nanocrystalline nanonetwork SnO 2 gas sensors in one integrated procedure, which combines electrodes fabrication, nanomaterials deposition, and postannealing. Interdigit electrodes are fabricated on an Au-coated fused silica substrate using a picosecond (ps) laser, which ablates the Au coating from the back of the substrate to pattern the electrodes. A novel transmitted Ps laser deposition (TPLD) process is designed to deposit SnO 2 nanonetwork on the interdigit electrodes with precise deposition area control under a close target-to-substrate distance. The obtained SnO 2 nanonetwork is in situ postannealed by a CO 2 laser to improve the crystallinity, while the nano morphology and grain size keep intact. To investigate the morphology and formation process of the nanonetwork, the microstructure of the laser-deposited SnO 2 layer is characterized. As a result, the crystallization control of CO 2 laser annealing is investigated through analyzing the Raman spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, and lattice structures of the samples. By exposed to H 2 atmosphere, the fabricated gas sensor is demonstrated for H 2 monitoring.

Experimental Evidence of Free Carrier Generation in 2D Hybrid Organic–Inorganic Perovskites

Despite the significant potential of 2D hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites (2DHOIPs) for high-efficiency optoelectronics application-comparable to their 3D counterparts, the fundamental carrier photogeneration remains unclear. In contrast to conventional ultrafast optical property characterization, we use ultrafast photocurrent spectroscopy to investigate the early-time electrical properties of type-I and type-II 2DHOIPs by manipulating the quantum confinement and the dielectric quantum matching effect. We discovered that the high frequency dielectric quantum matching effect plays a major role in 2DHOIPs, demonstrated by their high carrier mobility (µ), near-unity photogeneration quantum yield (Φ), below-room temperature exciton binding energy (E b ), and approaching 3D space factor (DSF). Our work shows that the optoelectronic performances of 2DHOIPs are comparable to their counterparts of 3DHOIPs.

Machine-Learning Microstructure for Inverse Material Design

Metallurgy and material design have thousands of years’ history and have played a critical role in the civilization process of humankind. The traditional trial-and-error method has been unprecedentedly challenged in the modern era when the number of components and phases in novel alloys keeps increasing, with high-entropy alloys as the representative. New opportunities emerge for alloy design in the artificial intelligence era. Here a successful machine-learning (ML) method is developed to identify the microstructure images with eye-challenging morphology for a number of martensitic and ferritic steels. Assisted by it, a new neural-network method is proposed for the inverse design of alloys with 20 components, which can accelerate the design process based on microstructure. The method is also readily applied to other material systems given sufficient microstructure images. This work lays the foundation for inverse alloy design based on microstructure images with extremely similar features.

Halogenated Dibenzo[ f , h ]quinoxaline Units Constructed 2D‐Conjugated Guest Acceptors for 19% Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Halogenation of Y‐series small‐molecule acceptors (Y‐SMAs) is identified as an effective strategy to optimize photoelectric properties for achieving improved power‐conversion‐efficiencies (PCEs) in binary organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the effect of different halogenation in the 2D‐structured large π‐fused core of guest Y‐SMAs on ternary OSCs has not yet been systematically studied. Herein, four 2D‐conjugated Y‐SMAs (X‐QTP‐4F, including halogen‐free H‐QTP‐4F, chlorinated Cl‐QTP‐4F, brominated Br‐QTP‐4F, and iodinated I‐QTP‐4F) by attaching different halogens into 2D‐conjugation extended dibenzo[ f , h ]quinoxaline core are developed. Among these X‐QTP‐4F, Cl‐QTP‐4F has a higher absorption coefficient, optimized molecular crystallinity and packing, suitable cascade energy levels, and complementary absorption with PM6:L8‐BO host. Moreover, among ternary PM6:L8‐BO:X‐QTP‐4F blends, PM6:L8‐BO:Cl‐QTP‐4F obtains a more uniform and size‐suitable fibrillary network morphology, improved molecular crystallinity and packing, as well as optimized vertical phase distribution, thus boosting charge generation, transport, extraction, and suppressing energy loss of OSCs. Consequently, the PM6:L8‐BO:Cl‐QTP‐4F‐based OSCs achieve a 19.0% efficiency, which is among the state‐of‐the‐art OSCs based on 2D‐conjugated Y‐SMAs and superior to these devices based on PM6:L8‐BO host (17.70%) and with guests of H‐QTP‐4F (18.23%), Br‐QTP‐4F (18.39%), and I‐QTP‐4F (17.62%). The work indicates that halogenation in 2D‐structured dibenzo[ f , h ]quinoxaline core of Y‐SMAs guests is a promising strategy to gain efficient ternary OSCs.

Advanced electrolytes for fast-charging high-voltage lithium-ion batteries in wide-temperature range

LiNixMnyCo1-x-yO2 (NMC) cathode materials with Ni=0.8 have attracted great interest for application in high energy-density lithium (Li)-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high specific capacities at high voltages. However, the practical application of Ni-rich NMC in LIBs under high charge voltages (e.g. 4.4 V and above) still faces big challenges due to the severe capacity fading, which is directly related to the instability of the cathode/electrolyte interface. In this work, we develop new localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) based on carbonate solvents, which are compatible with graphite (Gr) anode and have a high oxidation potential over 4.9 V vs. Li/Li+. The optimal LHCE enables the Gr||NMC811 cells with 2.8 mAh cm-2 cathode areal capacity loading to achieve an excellent cycling stability over 600 cycles with a capacity retention of 94.2 % under a charge cut-off voltage of 4.4 V at 25 ?C, good rate capabilities under fast charging or discharging up to 3C rate, and superior low-temperature discharge performance down to -30 ?C with a capacity retention of 85.6% at C/5 rate. The findings in this work shed light a very promising strategy to develop new electrolytes for practical high-energy LIBs with Ni-rich NMC cathodes.

Data‐Driven Safety Risk Prediction of Lithium‐Ion Battery

Abstract Inevitable safety issues have pushed battery engineers to become more conservative in battery system design; however, battery‐involved accidents still frequently are reported in headlines. Identifying, understanding, and predicting safety risks have become priorities to further accelerate technology and industry development. However, diverse loading scenarios, significantly varied stress‐induced short circuit mechanisms, and highly coupled mechanical–electrochemical safety behaviors have remained grand challenges. Herein, the safety risk is termed as the probability of the mechanical triggering of an internal short circuit, to reflect the safety related behaviors of lithium‐ion batteries. Based on a mechanical model and experimental results, a sufficient dataset is generated consisting of strain states and their corresponding safety risks, covering both cylindrical and pouch cells, various states of charges, and loading conditions. Machine‐learning tools combined with the established finite element mechanical model are applied to predict the safety risks of the cells. The results achieve a high level of accuracy on the test data (the relative error of the average short circuit prediction deviation is less than 6.2%.). This work underpins the safety risk concept and highlights the promise of physics combined with data‐driven modeling methodology to predict the safety behaviors of energy storage systems.
