Reply to “Comment on ‘Quasielastic lepton scattering and back-to-back nucleons in the short-time approximation’ ”

We briefly review the concept of scaling and how it occurs in quasielastic electron and neutrino scattering from nuclei, and then the particular approach to scaling in the short-time approximation. We show that, while two-nucleon currents do significantly enhance the transverse electromagnetic response, they do not spoil scaling, but in fact enhance it. We provide scaling results obtained in the short-time approximation that verify this claim. The enhanced scaling is not 'accidental' as claimed in Ref. [1] but rather reflects the dominant role played by pion exchange interactions and currents in the quasielastic regime.

Composite octet baryons in a relativistic mean field description of nuclear and neutron star matter

Here, we examine the properties of composite octet baryons in the nuclear medium and neutron-star matter. The internal quark-diquark structure of the octet baryons and the equations of state of nuclear matter and neutron-star matter in the mean field approximation are described by using the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model as an effective quark theory of quantum chromodynamics. After introducing our model, we first discuss the properties of single baryons and their effective meson exchange interactions in symmetric nuclear matter by using concepts of Fermi-liquid theory. Several model-independent implications of this description are derived and illustrated by numerical results obtained in our model. Second, we extend the model description to high baryon densities and investigate the equation of state of neutron-star matter and the resulting star masses. We find that the so-called hyperon puzzle persists also for the case of composite hadrons. To get more information on this point, we also investigate the role of 6-Fermi and 8-Fermi interactions, in addition to the standard 4-Fermi interactions. The strengths of those higher-order Fermi interactions is determined so as not to spoil the saturation properties of nuclear matter. Among them, an interaction characterized by a product of four-quark current operators plays a special role to stabilize the stars over a large region of central baryon densities, although it has little effect on the maximum star masses.

Parton distribution functions of heavy mesons on the light front

The parton distribution functions (PDFs) of heavy mesons are evaluated from their light-front wave functions, which are obtained from a basis light-front quantization in the leading Fock sector representation. We consider the mass eigenstates from an effective Hamiltonian consisting of the confining potential adopted from light-front holography in the transverse direction, a longitudinal confinement, and a one-gluon exchange interaction with running coupling. In this work we present the gluon and the sea quark PDFs which we generate dynamically from the QCD evolution of the valence quark distributions.

Gravitational form factors of charmonia

We investigate the gravitational form factors of charmonium. Our method is based on a Hamiltonian formalism on the light front known as basis light-front quantization. The charmonium mass spectrum and light-front wave functions were obtained from diagonalizing an effective Hamiltonian that incorporates confinement from holographic QCD and one-gluon exchange interaction from light-front QCD. We proposed a quantum many-body approach to construct the hadronic matrix elements of the energy momentum tensor T + + and T + − , which are used to extract the gravitational form factors A ( Q 2 ) and D ( Q 2 ) . The obtained form factors satisfy the known constraints, e.g., the von Laue condition. From these quantities, we also extract the energy, pressure and light-front energy distributions of the system. We find that hadrons are multilayer systems. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Gravitational form factors and mechanical properties of quarks in protons: A basis light-front quantization approach

We compute the gravitational form factors (GFFs) and study their applications for the description of the mechanical properties such as the pressure, shear force distributions, and the mechanical radius of the proton from its light-front wave functions (LFWFs) based on basis light-front quantization (BLFQ). The LFWFs of the proton are given by the lowest eigenvector of a light-front effective Hamiltonian that incorporates a three-dimensional confining potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling between the constituent quarks solved in the valence Fock sector. We find acceptable agreement between our BLFQ computations and the lattice QCD for the GFFs. Our D -term form factor also agrees well with the extracted data from the deeply virtual Compton scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab, and the results of different phenomenological models. The distributions of pressures and shear forces are similar to those from different models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Basis light-front quantization for the Λ b and Σ b baryons

Within the basis light-front quantization framework, we compute the masses and light-front wave functions of the Λ b baryon and its isospin triplet counterparts Σ b + , Σ b 0 , and Σ b − using a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the leading Fock sector. These wave functions are obtained as eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian, which incorporates the one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling and a three-dimensional confinement potential. With the quark masses and the couplings as adjustable parameters, the computed masses are set within the experimental range. The resulting predictions for their electromagnetic properties align well with other theoretical calculations. Additionally, the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of these baryons are obtained for the first time, with gluon and sea quark distributions dynamically generated through QCD evolution of the valence quark PDFs. Possible Quantum Paramagnetism in Compressed Sr 2 IrO 4

The result of compression on the magnetic ground state of Sr 2 IrO 4 is studied with x-ray resonant techniques in the diamond anvil cell. The weak interlayer exchange coupling between square-planar 2D IrO 2 layers is easily modified upon compression, with a crossover between magnetic structures around 7 GPa mimicking the effect of an applied magnetic field at ambient pressure. Higher pressures drive an order-disorder magnetic phase transition with no magnetic order detected above 17–20 GPa. The persistence of strong exchange interactions between J eff = 1 / 2 magnetic moments within the insulating IrO 2 layers up to at least 35 GPa points to a highly frustrated magnetic state in compressed Sr 2 IrO 4 , opening the door for realization of novel quantum paramagnetic phases driven by extended 5 d orbitals with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom.

Helimagnetic Structure and Heavy-Fermion-Like Behavior in the Vicinity of the Quantum Critical Point in Mn 3 P

Antiferromagnet Mn 3 P with Neel temperature T N =30 K is composed of Mn tetrahedrons and zigzag chains formed by three inequivalent Mn sites. Due to the nearly frustrated lattice with many short Mn-Mn bonds, competition of the exchange interactions is expected. We here investigate the magnetic structure and physical properties including pressure effect in single crystals of this material, and reveal a complex yet well-ordered helimagnetic structure. The itinerant character of this materials is strong, and the ordered state with small magnetic moments is easily suppressed under pressure, exhibiting a quantum critical point at ~1.6 GPa. The remarkable mass renormalization, even in the ordered state, and an incoherent-coherent crossover in the low-temperature region, characterize an unusual electronic state in Mn 3 P, which is most likely effected by the underlying frustration effect.

Helical Edge States and Quantum Phase Transitions in Tetralayer Graphene

Helical conductors with spin-momentum locking are promising platforms for Majorana fermions. Here we report observation of two topologically distinct phases supporting helical edge states in charge neutral Bernal-stacked tetralayer graphene in Hall bar and Corbino geometries. As the magnetic field B ⊥ and out-of-plane displacement field D are varied, we observe a phase diagram consisting of an insulating phase and two metallic phases, with 0, 1, and 2 helical edge states, respectively. These phases are accounted for by a theoretical model that relates their conductance to spin-polarization plateaus. Transitions between them arise from a competition among interlayer hopping, electrostatic and exchange interaction energies. Finally, our work highlights the complex competing symmetries and the rich quantum phases in few-layer graphene.

Observing the Suppression of Superconductivity in RbEuFe 4 As 4 by Correlated Magnetic Fluctuations

In this Letter, we describe quantitative magnetic imaging of superconducting vortices in RbEuFe 4 As 4 in order to investigate the unique interplay between the magnetic and superconducting sublattices. Our scanning Hall microscopy data reveal a pronounced suppression of the superfluid density near the magnetic ordering temperature in good qualitative agreement with a recently developed model describing the suppression of superconductivity by correlated magnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, these results indicate a pronounced exchange interaction between the superconducting and magnetic subsystems in RbEuFe 4 As 4 , with important implications for future investigations of physical phenomena arising from the interplay between them.

Flat-Band-Enabled Triplet Excitonic Insulator in a Diatomic Kagome Lattice

The excitonic insulator (EI) state is a strongly correlated many-body ground state, arising from an instability in the band structure of narrow-gap semiconductors towards exciton formation. Here we show that the flat valence and conduction bands of a Yin-Yang Kagome lattice, as exemplified in a superatomic graphene lattice, conspire to enable an interesting state of triplet EI, based on first-principles Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations combined with many-body GW and Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE). As an intrinsic property of topological flat bands, highly localized electron and hole wavefunctions significantly reduce the screening and enhance the exchange interaction, leading to an unusually high triplet exciton binding energy (~1.2 eV) exceeding the GW band gap by ~0.2 eV and a huge singlet-triplet splitting of ~0.4 eV. Here, the flat-bands-enabled triplet EI state also points to the possibility of complete population inversion between the two topological flat bands for the realization of excited quantum spin Hall effect. Our findings enrich once again the intriguing physics of flat bands, which has drawn broad interest.

Dynamical Scaling as a Signature of Multiple Phase Competition in Yb 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7

Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 is a celebrated example of a pyrochlore magnet with highly frustrated, anisotropic exchange interactions. To date, attention has largely focused on its unusual, static properties, many of which can be understood as coming from the competition between different types of magnetic order. Here, in this work, we use inelastic neutron scattering with exceptionally high energy resolution to explore the dynamical properties of Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 . We find that spin correlations exhibit dynamical scaling, analogous to behavior found near to a quantum critical point. We show that the observed scaling collapse can be explained within a phenomenological theory of multiple-phase competition, and confirm that a scaling collapse is also seen in semiclassical simulations of a microscopic model of Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 . These results suggest that dynamical scaling may be general to systems with competing ground states.

Line-Graph Approach to Spiral Spin Liquids

Competition among exchange interactions is able to induce novel spin correlations on a bipartite lattice without geometrical frustration. A prototype example is the spiral spin liquid, which is a correlated paramagnetic state characterized by subdimensional degenerate propagation vectors. Here, using spectral graph theory, we show that spiral spin liquids on a bipartite lattice can be approximated by a further-neighbor model on the corresponding line-graph lattice that is nonbipartite, thus broadening the space of candidate materials that may support the spiral spin liquid phases. As examples, we examine neutron scattering experiments performed on two spinel compounds, ZnCr 2 Se 4 and CuInCr 4 Se 8 , to demonstrate the feasibility of this new approach and expose its possible limitations in experimental realizations.

Continuous Spin Excitations in the Three-Dimensional Frustrated Magnet K 2 Ni 2 ⁢(SO 4 ) 3

Continuous spin excitations are widely recognized as one of the hallmarks of novel spin states in quantum magnets, such as quantum spin liquids (QSLs). Here, we report the observation of such kind of excitations in K 2 Ni 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , which consists of two sets of intersected spin-1 (Ni 2+ ) trillium lattices. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurement on single crystals clearly shows a dominant excitation continuum, which exhibits a distinct temperature-dependent behavior from that of spin waves and is rooted in strong quantum spin fluctuations. Further using the self-consistent-Gaussian-approximation method, we determine that the fourth- and fifth nearest-neighbor exchange interactions are dominant. These two bonds together form a unique three-dimensional network of corner-sharing tetrahedra, which we name as a “hypertrillium” lattice. In conclusion, our results provide direct evidence for the existence of QSL features in K 2 Ni 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and highlight the potential for the hypertrillium lattice to host frustrated quantum magnetism.

Spin Polarons and Ferromagnetism in Doped Dilute Moiré-Mott Insulators

Moiré heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit Mott-insulating behavior both at half filling as well as at fractional fillings, where electronic degrees of freedom form self-organized Wigner crystal states. An open question concerns magnetic states obtained by lifting the pseudospin-1/2 degeneracy of these states at lowest temperatures. While at half filling virtual hopping is expected to induce (weak) antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, these are strongly suppressed when considering dilute filling fractions. We argue that, instead, a small concentration of doped electrons leads to the formation of spin polarons, inducing ferromagnetic order at experimentally relevant temperatures, consistent with recently observed ferromagnetic states in moiré TMD systems. Here, we predict explicit signatures of polaron formation in the magnetization profile.

Giant Nonreciprocity and Gyration through Modulation-Induced Hatano-Nelson Coupling in Integrated Photonics

Asymmetric energy exchange interactions, also known as Hatano-Nelson type couplings, enable the study of non-Hermitian physics and associated phenomena like the non-Hermitian skin effect and exceptional points (EPs). Since these interactions are by definition nonreciprocal, there have been very few options for implementations in integrated photonics. Here, in this work, we show that asymmetric couplings are readily achievable in integrated photonic systems through time-domain dynamic modulation. We experimentally study this concept using a two-resonator photonic molecule produced in a lithium niobate on insulator platform that is electro-optically modulated by rf stimuli. We demonstrate the dynamic tuning of the Hatano-Nelson coupling between the resonators, surpassing the asymmetry that has been achieved in previous work, to reach an EP for the first time. We are additionally able to flip the relative sign of the couplings for opposite directions by going past the EP. Using this capability, we show that the through-chain transport can be configured to exhibit both giant (~60 dB) optical contrast as well as photonic gyration or nonreciprocal π phase contrast.

Complex magnetic structure in Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 with isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimer

We report detailed magnetic, transport, heat-capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements of Ba 5 Ru 3 O 12 , a compound consisting of isolated Ru 3 O 12 trimers. We show that this system develops long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at T N ~ 60 K without structural distortion or metal-insulator-type transition, which is in sharp contrast to other Barium Ruthenate trimer systems such as 9R-BaRuO 3 and Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 . A complex magnetic structure is revealed which is attributable to the magnetic frustration due to competing exchange interactions between Ru ions on different crystallographic sites within the Ru 3 O 12 trimer and different degree of orbital hybridization on different Ru-sites. In conclusion, we have also investigated the magnetic structure of Ba 4 Ru 3 O 10 for comparisons.

Epitaxial stabilization of thin films of the frustrated Ge-based spinels

Frustrated magnets can host numerous exotic many-body quantum and topological phenomena. GeNi 2 O 4 is a three-dimensional S=1 frustrated magnet with an unusual two-stage transition to the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic ground state, while GeCu 2 O 4 is a high-pressure phase with a strongly tetragonally elongated spinel structure and magnetic lattice formed by S=1/2 CuO 2 linear chains with frustrated interchain exchange interactions and exotic magnetic behavior. Here, we report on the thin-film epitaxial stabilization of these two compounds. The developed growth mode, surface morphology, crystal structure, and copper valence state were characterized by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy, x-ray reflectivity, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and resonant x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our results pave an alternative route to the comprehensive investigation of the puzzling magnetic properties of these compounds and the exploration of emergent features driven by strain.
