Influence of airfoil geometry on delta wing leading-edge vortices and vortex-induced aerodynamics at supersonic speeds

An assessment of the influence of airfoil geometry on delta wing leading edge vortex flow and vortex induced aerodynamics at supersonic speeds is discussed. A series of delta wing wind tunnel models were tested over a Mach number range from 1.7 to 2.0. The model geometric variables included leading edge sweep and airfoil shape. Surface pressure data, vapor screen, and oil flow photograph data were taken to evaluate the complex structure of the vortices and shocks on the family of wings tested. The data show that airfoil shape has a significant impact on the wing upper surface flow structure and pressure distribution, but has a minimal impact on the integrated upper surface pressure increments.

Y1Ba2Cu3O(6+delta) growth on thin Y-enhanced SiO2 buffer layers on silicon

SiO2 buffer layers as thin as 2 nm have been developed for use in the growth of Y1Ba2Cu3O(6+delta) thin films on silicon substrates. The SiO2 layers are formed through Y enhancement of silicon oxidation, and are highly stoichiometric. Y1Ba2Cu3O(6+delta) film growth on silicon with thin buffer layers has shown c orientation and Tc0 = 78 K.

Particle sizes of the Uranus delta ring's inner diffuse companion through comparison of RSS and PPS Voyager occultation data

In January, 1976, Voyager 2's photopolarimeter and UV spectrometer observed Delta Sagitarii and Beta Persei during their occultation by the Uranian delta ring. An inner diffuse companion of this ring was detected and found to have an average width of 12 km. By comparing the widths and equivalent depths of the two sets of data, it is established that the particles making the greatest contribution to the integrated opacities of the companion are of greater-than-several-cm sizes. The particles appear to be located away from the photopolarimetry edges, where there may be particles smaller than those observed elsewhere.

Bandpass Delta Sigma A/D convertor using two-path multibit structure

The concept of an N-path bandpass Delta Sigma A/D convertor is introduced. A multibit sixth-order SC implementation is described. The new scheme appears to be very effective for the realization of the narrowband bandpass delta-sigma modulators needed for communication applications.

Vortex trapping on a 60 degree delta wing

An experiment was conducted to examine the vortex trapping concept on a 60 deg sweep delta wing at low angles of attack. Using tapered leading edge fences, stable vortices have been successfully trapped. The resulting increase in lift coefficient can be as high as 0.4, which amounts to a 6.5 deg shift in the lift coefficient curve of the delta wing. The corresponding increase in drag coefficient, however, is also significant.

Temperature independent quantum well FET with delta channel doping

A temperature independent device is presented which uses a quantum well structure and delta doping within the channel. The device requires a high delta doping concentration within the channel to achieve a constant Hall mobility and carrier concentration across the temperature range 300-1.4 K. Transistors were RF tested using on-wafer probing and a constant G sub max and F sub max were measured over the temperature range 300-70 K.

An aerodynamic model for one and two degree of freedom wing rock of slender delta wings

The unsteady aerodynamic effects due to the separated flow around slender delta wings in motion were analyzed. By combining the unsteady flow field solution with the rigid body Euler equations of motion, self-induced wing rock motion is simulated. The aerodynamic model successfully captures the qualitative characteristics of wing rock observed in experiments. For the one degree of freedom in roll case, the model is used to look into the mechanisms of wing rock and to investigate the effects of various parameters, like angle of attack, yaw angle, displacement of the separation point, and wing inertia. To investigate the roll and yaw coupling for the delta wing, an additional degree of freedom is added. However, no limit cycle was observed in the two degree of freedom case. Nonetheless, the model can be used to apply various control laws to actively control wing rock using, for example, the displacement of the leading edge vortex separation point by inboard span wise blowing.

Prediction of vortex breakdown on a delta wing

Recent studies of leading-edge vortex flows with computational fluid dynamics codes using Euler or Navier-Stokes formulations have shown fair agreement with experimental data. These studies have concentrated on simulating the flowfields associated with a sharp-edged flat plate 70 deg delta wing at angles of attack where vortex breakdown or burst is observed over the wing. There are, however, a number of discrepancies between the experimental data and the computed flowfields. The location of vortex breakdown in the computational solutions is seen to differ from the experimental data and to vary with changes in the computational grid and freestream Mach number. There also remain issues as to the validity of steady-state computations for cases which contain regions of unsteady flow, such as in the post-breakdown regions. As a partial response to these questions, a number of laminar Navier-Stokes solutions were examined for the 70 deg delta wing. The computed solutions are compared with an experimental database obtained at low subsonic speeds. The convergence of forces, moments and vortex breakdown locations are also analyzed to determine if the computed flowfields actually reach steady-state conditions.

Investigation of vortex breakdown on delta wings using Navier-Stokes equations

An efficient finite-difference scheme solving for the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is described. Numerical simulations of vortex breakdown are then carried out for a sharp-edged delta wing and a round-edged double-delta wing at high Reynolds numbers. Computed results show that several major features of vortex breakdown are qualitatively in agreement with observations made in experiments.

On the dynamic activity in sheared corridors of large delta spots

A study of registered, highly time-compressed, white-light movies, made from digital data obtained at Big Bear, revealed dynamic and complex photospheric activity for the first time inside the large delta spot of the March 1989 region. Similar activity in two other regions of large delta spots with sheared penumbral structure was found. They are NOAA Nos. 5629 and 5747 in August and October of 1989, respectively. Both are extraordinarily flare-prolific regions as well. The unusual dynamic activity consists of two parts: the motion of the penumbra and the emergence of new spots in the midst of the penumbral motion. The manner and place of emergence are different from those in ordinary emerging flux regions, and often the spots are without observable opposite polarity flux.

Experiment-specific cosmic microwave background calculations made easier - Approximation formula for smoothed delta T/T windows

Simple and easy to implement elementary function approximations are introduced to the spectral window functions needed in calculations of model predictions of the cosmic microwave backgrond (CMB) anisotropy. These approximations allow the investigator to obtain model delta T/T predictions in terms of single integrals over the power spectrum of cosmological perturbations and to avoid the necessity of performing the additional integrations. The high accuracy of these approximations is demonstrated here for the CDM theory-based calculations of the expected delta T/T signal in several experiments searching for the CMB anisotropy.

Navier-Stokes prediction of a delta wing in roll with vortex breakdown

The three-dimensional, Reynolds-averaged, Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are used to numerically simulate vortical flow about a 65 degree sweep delta wing. Subsonic turbulent flow computations are presented for this delta wing at 30 degrees angle of attack and static roll angles up to 42 degrees. This work is part of an on going effort to validate the RANS approach for predicting high-incidence vortical flows, with the eventual application to wing rock. The flow is unsteady and includes spiral-type vortex breakdown. The breakdown positions, mean surface pressures, rolling moments, normal forces, and streamwise center-of-pressure locations compare reasonably well with experiment. In some cases, the primary vortex suction peaks are significantly underpredicted due to grid coarseness. Nevertheless, the computations are able to predict the same nonlinear variation of rolling moment with roll angle that appeared in the experiment. This nonlinearity includes regions of local static roll instability, which is attributed to vortex breakdown.

Optical response of an ultrathin film and a large-angle grain-boundary in superconducting YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)

We have investigated the optical response of epitaxial ultrathin (3 nm) YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) film on an NdGaO3 substrate and thin (50 nm) film of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) on a bicrystal SrTiO3 substrate. While the current-voltage characteristics of the ultrathin film indicate a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition (associated with vortex-antivortex unbinding) at a temperature T(KT), we do not observe any optical response at or below T(KT). An enhanced optical response with nonbolometric characteristics was observed from the grain-boundary as compared to the bolometric optical response of the epitaxial film at the resistive transition. These results indicate that the grain-boundary weak links play a significant role in the enhanced optical response near Tc.

Simulation of tail buffet using delta wing-vertical tail configuration

Computational simulation of the vertical tail buffet problem is accomplished using a delta wing-vertical tail configuration. Flow conditions are selected such that the wing primary-vortex cores experience vortex breakdown and the resulting flow interacts with the vertical tail. This multidisciplinary problem is solved successively using three sets of equations for the fluid flow, aeroelastic deflections and grid displacements. For the fluid dynamics part, the unsteady, compressible, full Navier-Stokes equations are solved accurately in time using an implicit, upwind, flux-difference splitting, finite-volume scheme. For the aeroelastic part, the aeroelastic equation for bending vibrations is solved accurately in time using the Galerkin method and the four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme. The grid for the fluid dynamics computations is updated every few time steps using a third set of interpolation equations. The computational application includes a delta wing of aspect ratio 1 and a rectangular vertical tail of aspect ratio 2, which is placed at 0.5 root-chord length downstream of the wing trailing edge. The wing angle of attack is 35 deg and the flow Mach number and Reynolds number are 0.4 and 10,000, respectively.

A stepped-frequency Delta-K microwave radar for oceanographic studies

A stepped-frequency Delta-K (SFDK) radar was developed to remotely sense ocean surface characteristics. This C-band radar uses frequency diversity and real-time signal processing for improved Delta-K measurements. In this paper, we show how frequency diversity can be implemented to enhance the energy of the resonant peak of the cross-product spectrum relative to the background energy. This feature is essential for making real-time measurements of resonant peak frequency over extended time periods. The SFDK was used in a month-long field experiment at N. Truro (Massachusetts). The results presented show that the phase velocity of ocean surface waves could be precisely measured 87 percent of the time.

Demonstration of Y1Ba2Cu3O(7-delta) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor device fabrication on the same sapphire substrate

We report the first fabrication of active semiconductor and high-temperature superconducting devices on the same substrate. Test structures of complementary MOS transistors were fabricated on the same sapphire substrate as test structures of Y1Ba2Cu3O(7-delta) flux-flow transistors, and separately, Y1Ba2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting quantum interference devices utilizing both biepitaxial and step-edge Josephson junctions. Both semiconductor and superconductor devices were operated at 77 K. The cofabrication of devices using these disparate yet complementary electronic technologies on the same substrate opens the door for the fabrication of true semiconductive/superconductive hybrid integrated circuits capable of exploiting the best features of each of these technologies.
