Definition of technology development missions for early space stations: Large space structures

The objectives studied are the definition of the tested role of an early Space Station for the construction of large space structures. This is accomplished by defining the LSS technology development missions (TDMs) identified in phase 1. Design and operations trade studies are used to identify the best structural concepts and procedures for each TDMs. Details of the TDM designs are then developed along with their operational requirements. Space Station resources required for each mission, both human and physical, are identified. The costs and development schedules for the TDMs provide an indication of the programs needed to develop these missions.

Overview of Aerothermodynamic Loads Definition Study

The Aerothermodynamic Loads Definition were studied to develop methods to more accurately predict the operating environment in the space shuttle main engine (SSME) components. Development of steady and time-dependent, three-dimensional viscous computer codes and experimental verification and engine diagnostic testing are considered. The steady, nonsteady, and transient operating loads are defined to accurately predict powerhead life. Improvements in the structural durability of the SSME turbine drive systems depends on the knowledge of the aerothermodynamic behavior of the flow through the preburner, turbine, turnaround duct, gas manifold, and injector post regions.

Definition of an entry research vehicle

Within the last year, there has been a growing interest in technology which would support the development of vehicles which can maneuver in the atmosphere while returning from orbit and vehicles which can fly in the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds for sustained periods of time. This rebirth of interest in hypersonics is partly a result of a developing awareness of the potential benefits which can be derived from vehicles with capability to operate between the limits of existing aircraft and spacecraft. Examples of the types of maneuvers which are projected for this new class of vehicles are presented. Challenges provided by the considered maneuvers are summarized, taking into account a synergetic or atmospheric plane change. The plane change maneuver will require a Thermal Protection System (TPS). Attention is given to the definition of a Shuttle launched entry research vehicle experiment. Details regarding the synergetic plane change are considered along with the maneuvering entry, vehicle heating, and experiments and instrumentation.

The definition of the Shuttle Tethered Aerothermodynamic Research Facility

Studies have been conducted to define the feasibility and practical limitations of the Shuttle Orbiter Tethered 'wind-tunnel' concept. This concept, referred to as the Shuttle Tethered Aerothermodynamic Research Facility (STARFAC), is proposed to provide researchers access to altitudes above 90 km to accomplish aerothermodynamic research in the rarefied upper atmosphere. Determining the feasibility and limitations of the concept has required the enhancement and/or development of mission simulation analytical techniques and control laws; the accomplishment of candidate mission simulations; the definition of instrumentation requirements, both for science and engineering; and the establishment of tether and satellite design requirements to meet STARFAC objectives. The results of the study, to date, indicate that such a concept is both feasible and practical. Representative results are presented, as are recommendations for continued studies which would result in program implementation.

Design requirements and development of an airborne descent path definition algorithm for time navigation

The design requirements for a 4D path definition algorithm are described. These requirements were developed for the NASA ATOPS as an extension of the Local Flow Management/Profile Descent algorithm. They specify the processing flow, functional and data architectures, and system input requirements, and recommended the addition of a broad path revision (reinitialization) function capability. The document also summarizes algorithm design enhancements and the implementation status of the algorithm on an in-house PDP-11/70 computer. Finally, the requirements for the pilot-computer interfaces, the lateral path processor, and guidance and steering function are described.

The Space Station program definition and preliminary systems design - Recent developments

It is pointed out that space stations represent a major vehicle for accomplishing many things mankind envisions for space activities. Thus, space stations have become necessary stepping-off points for deep-space expeditions, and it is expected that they will lead eventually to the permanent occupancy of another planet. The present paper provides a report regarding planning activities in the U.S. and in other countries which have made significant progress in making a permanent Space Station a reality. The Space Station will consist of a manned base and associated platforms, as well as collateral support equipment. The purpose of the program definition and preliminary design activities (Phase B) is to arrive at the baseline configuration before initiating actual hardware development. Details of the program plan are discussed along with user considerations in design, the commercialization of space, design issues, operations, and Space Station evolution.

The synthesis of primitive 'living' forms - Definitions, goals, strategies and evolution synthesizers

The arbitrariness of the definition of life is discussed in relation to both the archaic biological entities that preceded cells during the Molecular Evolution era, and the hypothetical, primitive, 'living' entities that presumably can be synthesized in the laboratory. Several experimental approaches to the synthesis, detection, and characterization of 'living' entities are discussed. The experimental approaches considered for the synthesis are the constructionist strategy, the whole-environment strategy, and the modular strategy, which is a combination of the first two. The whole-environment strategy is discussed in more detail and the establishment of an Evolution Synthesizer, based on this strategy, is proposed and rationalized. The guidelines for the detection and characterization of populations and processes of 'living' entities include chemical and physical analyses, but are based mainly on the reproductive characterization of these entities. It is expected that the higher the evolutionary level of the 'living' entities, the longer and more difficult it will be to synthesize them, but the easier it will be to detect them.

Conceptual definition of a technology development mission for advanced solar dynamic power systems

An initial conceptual definition of a technology development mission for advanced solar dynamic power systems is provided, utilizing a space station to provide a dedicated test facility. The advanced power systems considered included Brayton, Stirling, and liquid metal Rankine systems operating in the temperature range of 1040 to 1400 K. The critical technologies for advanced systems were identified by reviewing the current state of the art of solar dynamic power systems. The experimental requirements were determined by planning a system test of a 20 kWe solar dynamic power system on the space station test facility. These requirements were documented via the Mission Requirements Working Group (MRWG) and Technology Development Advocacy Group (TDAG) forms. Various concepts or considerations of advanced concepts are discussed. A preliminary evolutionary plan for this technology development mission was prepared.

Orbital transfer vehicle concept definition and system analysis study. Volume 1A: Executive summary. Phase 2

The objectives of the Phase 2 study were to improve the orbit transfer vehicle (OTV) concept definition by focusing on the following issues: the impact of mission requirements on OTV system design; OTV basing concepts on the Space Shuttle, separate platforms, and/or remote locations; cost reduction of an OTV program to improve its economic benefits and support its acquisition. The OTV mission scenario includes a wide range of missions the main drivers of which are manned GEO servicing, mid-inclination/polar DOD, and lunar/planetary projects. A mission model is presented which includes the type and number of missions per year and the estimated propellant requirements. To accomplish the missions, many OTV concepts were defined including ground-based OTVs launched either in the STS orbiter, the aft cargo carrier, or a heavy lift launch vehicle, and a space-based OTV. System and program trade studies were conducted using performance, cost, safety/risk, and operations/growth criteria. The study shows that mission requirements and substantial economic benefits justify a reusable, cryogenic (H2/O2) space-based OTV. Such a system would not be subjected to Earth-to-orbit launch loads and would not be constained in size or weight. Safety is enhanced by the fact that the system components are launched unfueled. Its inherent reusability and ability to be refueled in space make the space-based OTV very economical to operate.

Concurrent Cholesky factorization of positive definite banded Hermitian matrices

First, the Cholesky factorization is extended to cover uniformly partitioned banded positive definite matrices of rank n which may be real symmetric or Hermitian. Then, two stratagems are given for the use of the algorithm in concurrent machines where the number of processing elements is less than required to factor the matrix in as few serial steps as possible, and where uniformly high efficiency is expected from all processing elements. Expressions are given for the efficiency factor e appearing in the speed-up expression q = eN, and these are specialized for the N node hypercube machine as a function of partition size s, the number N of processing elements of the hypercube machine, and the cost mu of interelement transmission relative to computation. It is shown that the efficiency factor e is inversely proportional to mu/s, and that e is almost independent of N when N is large and mu/s = 0. The task is completed in n/s serial steps with no limit on n. The half bandwidth b of the matrix is 2 Ns.

Concept definition study for recovery of tumbling satellites. Volume 1: Executive summary, study results

The first assessment is made of the design requirements and conceptual definition of a front end kit to be transported on the currently defined Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle (OMV) and the Space Transportation System Shuttle Orbiter, to conduct remote, teleoperated recovery of disabled and noncontrollable, tumbling satellites. Previous studies did not quantify the dynamic characteristics of a tumbling satellite, nor did they appear to address the full spectrum of Tumbling Satellite Recovery systems requirements. Both of these aspects are investigated with useful results.

Orbiter transfer vehicle concept definition and system analysis study. Volume 4: Space station accommodations. Revision 1

A brief summary is given of the key objectives of Task 5 of the Space Station Accommodations Concept Definition. Space station accommodations were assessed and defined for each potential candidate Space-Based OTV concept and for the composite OTV fleet. To accomplish this, the functional and physical interactions between each OTV concept and the space station were defined. Then, conceptual accommodation designs were prepared and optimized for approach and configuration. Initial space station requirements were identified, including the ability to accommodate and support evolution to maturity, and then a time-phasing of accommodations was prepared showing that evolution. In the process of developing physical and functional interactions, operational requirements were defined, together with associated timelines. In that the crew complement is subject to limitations, the operational requirements derivation is biased toward automation wherever possible. For each candidate Ground-Based OTV concept, operating in conjunction with the space station, the above process was repeated.

Infrared and visible satellite rain estimation. I - A grid cell approach. II - A cloud definition approach

This study explores the relationships between satellite-viewed cloudy grid cells and the variability of the precipitation contained therein, together with the relationships between the satellite-IR clouds and rainfall and the IR-thresholded visible clouds and rainfall. In the grid cell approach, IR, visible, and radar data for five days of the Florida Area Cumulus Experiment were examined using a 32-km grid and 30-min interval; the results of this experiment indicated that useful, accurate rainfall estimates beyond rain/no rain discrimination are unlikely. In the cloud definition approach, it was found that the cloud IR area was highly correlated with the rain area and with the volume rain rate across the entire spectrum of cloud sizes. It was poorly correlated with mean cloud rain rate.

Orbital transfer vehicle concept definition and system analysis study, 1985. Volume 5: Work breakdown structure and dictionary

To establish consistency and visibility within the Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) program, a preliminary work breakdown structure (WBS) and dictionary were developed. The dictionary contains definitions of terms to be used in conjunction with the WBS so that a clear understanding of the content of the hardware, function, and cost elements may be established. The OTV WBS matrix is a two-dimensional structure which shows the interrelationship of these dimensions: the hardware elements dimension and the phase and function dimension. The dimension of time cannot be shown graphically, but must be considered. Each cost entry varies with time so that it is necessary to know these cost values by year for budget planning and approval as well as for establishing cost streams for discounting purposes in the economic analysis. While a multiple dimensional approach may at first appear complex, it actually provides benefits which outweigh any concern. This structural interrelationship provides the capability to view and analyze the OTV costs from a number of different financial and management aspects. Cost may be summed by hardware groupings, phases, or functions. The WBS may be used in a number of dimensional or single listing format applications.

Orbital transfer vehicle concept definition and system analysis study, 1985. Volume 3: System and program trades

The key system and program trade studies performed to arrive at a preferred Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) system concept and evolutionary approach to the acquisition of the requisite capabilites is documented. These efforts were expanded to encompass a Space Transportation Architecture Study (STAS) mission model and recommended unmanned cargo vehicle. The most important factors affecting the results presented are the mission model requirements and selection criteria. The reason for conducting the OTV concept definition and system analyses study is to select a concept and acquisition approach that meets a delivery requirement reflected by the mission model.

A technique for solving constraint satisfaction problems using Prolog's definite clause grammars

A new technique for solving constraint satisfaction problems using Prolog's definite clause grammars is presented. It exploits the fact that the grammar rule notation can be viewed as a state exchange notation. The novel feature of the technique is that it can perform informed as well as blind search. It provides the Prolog programmer with a new technique for application to a wide range of design, scheduling, and planning problems.
