Improving Land Cover Classification Using Extended Multi-Attribute Profiles (EMAP) Enhanced Color, Near Infrared, and LiDAR Data

Hyperspectral (HS) data have found a wide range of applications in recent years. Researchers observed that more spectral information helps land cover classification performance in many cases. However, in some practical applications, HS data may not be available, due to cost, data storage, or bandwidth issues. Instead, users may only have RGB and near infrared (NIR) bands available for land cover classification. Sometimes, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data may also be available to assist land cover classification. A natural research problem is to investigate how well land cover classification can be achieved under the aforementioned data constraints. In this paper, we investigate the performance of land cover classification while only using four bands (RGB+NIR) or five bands (RGB+NIR+LiDAR). A number of algorithms have been applied to a well-known dataset (2013 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Data Fusion Contest). One key observation is that some algorithms can achieve better land cover classification performance by using only four bands as compared to that of using all 144 bands in the original hyperspectral data with the help of synthetic bands generated by Extended Multi-attribute Profiles (EMAP). Moreover, LiDAR data do improve the land cover classification performance even further.

Double Image Polarimeter—Ultra Fast: Simultaneous Three-color (BVR) Polarimeter with Electron-multiplying Charge-coupled Devices

We describe a new instrument capable of high-precision (10{sup −5}) polarimetric observations simultaneously in three passbands (BVR). The instrument utilizes electron-multiplying charge-coupled device (EM CCD) cameras for high efficiency and fast image readout. The key features of the Double Image Polarimeter—Ultra Fast (DIPol-UF) are: (i) the optical design with high throughput and inherent stability; (ii) great versatility, which makes the instrument optimally suitable for observations of bright and faint targets; and (iii) a control system, which allows the use of the polarimeter remotely. Examples are given of the first results obtained from high signal-to-noise observations of bright nearby stars and of fainter sources such as X-ray binaries in their quiescent states.

Transparency and color tunable electro-optical device using colloidal core/shell nanoparticles

According to one embodiment, a product is a mixture including a solvent and generally spherical colloidal nanoparticles, the colloidal nanoparticles each having a core and a shell surrounding the core, and an electrode. In addition, the mixture is characterized as having a transparency to light in a predetermined wavelength range, where the transparency increases as a voltage of the electrode increases.

Readying for a Color-Mixed Future Luminous Efficacy on the Horizon

If history repeats itself, lighting 20 years from now will be substantially different than what it is today. Twenty years ago, LEDs were a novelty, not quite ready for use in architectural lighting systems. A little more than 20 years before that, rare-earth tri-phosphor T8 fluorescent lamps were beginning to replace broadband halophosphate T12 fluorescent lamps, which themselves became the predominant source of lumens in the United States around the middle of the last century. At each step in this evolution, new lighting metrics have been developed to address differences in performance, and they in turn guided technology development. For example, in the 1960s, it was CRI and CCT, and more recently it has been LM-79 and TM-30.

Two-color high speed thermal imaging system for laser-based additive manufacturing process monitoring

Monitoring melt pool temperature in laser powder bed fusion by providing a build laser that produces a laser beam that is directed onto the melt pool and produces an incandescence that emanates from the melt pool, receiving the incandescence and producing a first image having a first spectral band and a second image having a second spectral band, and determining the ratio of said first image having a first spectral band and said second image having a second spectral band to monitor the melt pool temperature.

Trace gas detection with 2-photon, 2-color, cavity ring-down spectroscopy

In one aspect, a method of detecting a trace gas is disclosed. The method includes containing the trace gas in an optical cavity. The method further includes injecting a first laser light from a first laser into the optical cavity causing the trace gas to transition from an energy state lower that a first excited energy state to the first excited energy state, and injecting a second laser light from a second laser into the optical cavity causing the trace gas to transition from the first excited energy state to a second excited energy state. The method includes measuring, by a detector, a first cavity ringdown intensity as a function of time after turning off the second laser with the first laser on, and a second cavity ringdown intensity as a function of time after turning off the second laser with the first laser off.

Continuous full-resolution two-color infrared detector

An apparatus is provided for nanoantenna-enhanced detection of infrared radiation. The apparatus includes one or more detector pixels. A plurality of detector pixels can constitute a focal plane array (FPA). Each detector pixel carries at least a first and a second subpattern of nanoantenna elements, with elements of the second subpattern interpolated between elements of the first subpattern. Each detector pixel also includes separate collection electrodes for collecting photogenerated current from the respective subpatterns.
