Unveiling the Structure and Dynamics of Water Confined in Colloidal Boehmite Suspensions
Thin fluid layers confined between nanoparticles play an important role in several natural and industrial systems, including radioactive wastes stored in tanks at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hanford site. Multimodal neutron and computational approaches have been integrated to examine the properties of one, two, and four layers of water (H 2 O or D 2 O) on nanoparticulate, hydrous, or deuterated boehmite (γ-AlOOH or γ-AlOOD). Exposure of deuterated boehmite to H 2 O at 90 °C yielded rapid H/D isotopic exchange likely driven by a Grotthus-like proton-hopping mechanism. The in-plane and out-of-plane vibrations of the structural hydroxyls involved in this exchange were observed for both the hydrated and deuterated boehmite. These observations were confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations that also showed that single water molecules on the (010) surface bond to the structure via four bonds: two from hydrogens (deuteriums) on the water to surrounding oxygens and two from the water’s oxygen to surrounding OD/OH. Bulk water-like properties began to appear once four monolayers of water had been added, but steric crowding limited water diffusion rates once two monolayers had been added. The super-Arrhenius temperature dependence observed at four monolayers indicated glass-like behavior in a well-formed hydrogen-bonding network. Such a network is not sufficiently developed, however, when the surface water coverage is less than four layers. In conclusion, the unique nature of these layers can provide critical information for understanding forces between particles in proximity, and resultant effects on suspension rheology.

Electrothermoplasmonic Trapping and Dynamic Manipulation of Single Colloidal Nanodiamond
Low-power trapping of nanoscale objects can be achieved by using the enhanced fields near plasmonic nanoantennas. Unfortunately, in this approach the trap site is limited to the position of the plasmonic hotspots and continuous dynamic manipulation is not feasible. In this work, we report a low-frequency electrothermoplasmonic tweezer (LFET) that provides low-power, high-stability and continuous dynamic manipulation of a single nanodiamond. LFET harnesses the combined action of the laser illumination of a plasmonic nanopillar antenna array and low-frequency alternating current (ac) electric field to establish an electrohydrodynamic potential capable of the stable trapping and dynamic manipulation of single nanodiamonds. We experimentally demonstrate the fast transport, trapping, and dynamic manipulation of a single nanodiamond using a low-frequency ac field below 5 kHz and low-laser power of 1 mW. This nanotweezer platform for nanodiamond manipulation holds promise for the scalable assembly of single photon sources for quantum information processing and low noise quantum sensors.
Optical and Magneto-Optical Properties of Donor-Bound Excitons in Vacancy-Engineered Colloidal Nanocrystals
Controlled insertion of electronic states within the band gap of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) is a powerful tool for tuning their physical properties. One compelling example is II–VI NCs incorporating heterovalent coinage metals in which hole capture produces acceptor-bound excitons. To date, the opposite donor-bound exciton scheme has not been realized because of the unavailability of suitable donor dopants. Here, we produce a model system for donor-bound excitons in CdSeS NCs engineered with sulfur vacancies (V S ) that introduce a donor state below the conduction band (CB), resulting in long-lived intragap luminescence. V S -localized electrons are almost unaffected by trapping, and suppression of thermal quenching boosts the emission efficiency to 85%. Magneto-optical measurements indicate that the V S are not magnetically coupled to the NC bands and that the polarization properties are determined by the spin of the valence-band photohole, whose spin flip is massively slowed down due to suppressed exchange interaction with the donor-localized electron.
Differentiating Thermal Conductances at Semiconductor Nanocrystal/Ligand and Ligand/Solvent Interfaces in Colloidal Suspensions
Infrared-pump, electronic-probe (IPEP) spectroscopy is used to measure heat flow into and out of CdSe nanocrystals suspended in an organic solvent, where the surface ligands are initially excited with an infrared pump pulse. Subsequently, the heat is transferred from the excited ligands to the nanocrystals and in parallel to the solvent. Parallel heat transfer in opposite directions uniquely enables us to differentiate the thermal conductances at the nanocrystal/ligand and ligand/solvent interfaces. Using a novel solution to the heat diffusion equation, we fit the IPEP data to find that the nanocrystal/ligand conductances range from 88 to 135 MW m –2 K –1 and are approximately 1 order of magnitude higher than the ligand/solvent conductances, which range from 7 to 26 MW m –2 K –1 . Transient nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of nanocrystal suspensions agree with IPEP data and show that ligands bound to the nanocrystal by bidentate bonds have more than twice the per-ligand conductance as those bound by monodentate bonds.
