Longitudinal Solid P Longitudinal Solid Polarized Target for CL get for CLAS12 and Study of Spin AS12 and Study of Spin Structure of Nucleons

A suite of experiments measuring target-spin observables in electron-nucleon scattering (dubbed Run Group C) was conducted at Jefferson Lab's Hall B in Newport News, VA with a new polarized nuclear target known as 'APOLLO' (Ammonia POLarized LOngitudinally). This innovative target is engineered to seamlessly integrate with the advanced 12GeV CEBAF (Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility) accelerator and the Hall B CLAS12 (12 GeV CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer) detector array. The 'APOLLO' target harnesses the power of Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) to achieve longitudinal polarization of solid ammonia, thereby creating a net polarization in both protons (NH3) and deuterons (ND3). These samples are subjected to a 5 Tesla magnetic field produced by the CLAS12 spectrometer central solenoid, cooled to 1 K using helium evaporation, and subsequently exposed to microwave radiation at a frequency of 140 GHz. This project was made possible through a collaborative partnership between the Jefferson Lab Target Group, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Christopher Newport University, and the CLAS Collaboration. Integrating the APOLLO target into CLAS12 presented unique challenges because of its specific spatial and dimensional constraints. This dissertation will highlight the innovative solutions developed to address these challenges, including the creation of a new target material transport system, the incorporation of superconducting magnetic correction coils, and the development of a customized Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) system. In addition to a detailed description of the development and operation of APOLLO, and an overview of RGC, this document also describes the global data fitting of proton asymmetries in the Deep Inelastic scattering (DIS) and the Resonance regions, and it offers insights into the comprehensive analysis of target polarization data.

Observation of a New Polyhalide Phase in Ag-Cl 2 System at High Pressure

In this short contribution, we examine Raman spectroscopic data from high-pressure and high-temperature experiments with an Ag-Cl2 system, and find that they are in good agreement with previously observed and calculated spectra of polychloride species. Our results imply the formation of a hitherto unknown AgClx compound, which warrants further study.

Rates of reactions ClO + ClO yields Cl2 + O2 and ClO + O yields Cl + O2 at elevated temperatures

Results are reported for an experiment in which a shock tube was employed to measure the reaction rates of chlorine-oxygen systems at high temperatures. In this experiment, a mixture of chlorine and ozone, diluted by oxygen and argon, was heated by two consecutive shock waves (primary and reflected) to produce a temperature in the range from 1000 to 1400 K and a pressure of between 3.5 and 9 atm. The reflected shock thermally decomposed the ozone; the resulting atomic oxygen reacted with molecular chlorine to produce ClO; and the variation in ClO concentration after passage of the reflected shock was observed by monitoring the intensity of 2537-A radiation passing through the test gas. The rates of the two cited reactions are deduced from the variation pattern. The rate coefficient values are found to be compatible with existing data obtained in lower pressure and temperature ranges.

Absolute rate of the reaction of Cl(p-2) with molecular hydrogen from 200 - 500 K

Rate constants for the reaction of atomic chlorine with hydrogen are measured from 200 - 500 K using the flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence technique. The results are compared with previous work and are discussed with particular reference to the equilibrium constant for the reaction and to relative rate data for chlorine atom reactions. Theoretical calculations, using the BEBO method with tunneling, give excellent agreement with experiment.

MCSCF + Cl wavefunctions and properties of the X2-Pi and A2-Pi states of ClO

A multiconfiguration, self-consistent field plus configuration-interaction calculation has been performed on the X2-Pi and A2-Pi electronic states of ClO. The values of certain molecular properties computed from the wavefunctions agree well with those from experiment. The sum of the squares of the computed electronic transition moments between the X2-Pi and A2-Pi states at 3.07 bohr is 1.75 a.u., which corresponds to the experimental result of 1.58 plus or minus 0.20 a.u. The computed ground state dipole moment at the experimental equilibrium separation is 1.232 D, which compares well with two experimental results of 1.18 plus or minus 0.12 and 1.239 plus or minus 0.010 D. The value of the computed dissociation energy is 2.75 eV, which agrees well with the experimental value of 2.803 plus or minus 0.001 eV.

Population inversion mechanisms producing nuclear lasing in He-3-Ar, Xe, Kr, Cl, and UF6

The paper examines the lasing excitation mechanisms of present nuclear lasers, with a view to developing more efficient, higher power nuclear lasers. Particular attention is given to volumetric nuclear discharges pumped by either the He-3(n, p)H-3 reaction or the U-235F6(n, ff)FF reaction. Insight gained from these laser systems will make it possible to determine the major excitation mechanisms and then to look for new gaseous laser systems where these excitation mechanisms dominate.
