Nickel-hydrogen bipolar battery systems

Nickel-hydrogen cells are currently being manufactured on a semi-experimental basis. Rechargeable nickel-hydrogen systems are described that more closely resemble a fuel cell system than a traditional nickel-cadmium battery pack. This has been stimulated by the currently emerging requirements related to large manned and unmanned low earth orbit applications. The resultant nickel-hydrogen battery system should have a number of features that would lead to improved reliability, reduced costs as well as superior energy density and cycle lives as compared to battery systems constructed from the current state-of-the-art nickel-hydrogen individual pressure vessel cells.

Test methods and results of the 10-cell bipolar Ni-H2 battery

Characterization tests were carried out at three charge levels and four discharge levels. The "c' or capacity of the battery is designated at 6.5 ampere-hours. The recharge ampere-hours was the same for all test conditions, 6.5 A-H, regardless of the discharge capacity removed for any particular discharge rate. Less capacity can be removed at higher discharge rates to the same termination voltage, which was 0.50 volts for the weakest (lowest voltage) cell. The general trend of efficiencies increases as the charge rate increases as noted in results of the table included in the handout package. The data also indicate the efficiency increases as the discharge rate decreases. This is true; however, efficiencies at the discharge rates of c and 2c are penalized because these cycles received more overcharge than necessary.

IUE observations of the perplexing bipolar planetary nebula NGC 2346

A preliminary analysis of International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) low-dispersion spectrograms of NGC 2346, obtained at various phases of the eclipsing nucleus, shows features typical of a high-excitation planetary nebula. Variations in line profiles, intensities, and stellar continuum are observed as a function of time. An orbital period of 16.0 days was determined from 1.8m(v) variations measured by the IUE Fine Error Sensor (FES) and agrees with the period derived from radial velocity measurements by Mendez.

A new FET-bipolar combinational power semiconductor switch

A novel FET-BJT combinational transistor configuration is proposed and demonstrated using discrete devices. This new transistor features fast switching, very simple drive requirement, elimination of reverse bias second breakdown, and good utilization of semiconductor chip area. Initial results indicate that power hybrid construction of the device is essential to enhance the current rating of the device.

Bipolar Ejection of Matter from Hot Stars

A general program on the internal velocities in H II regions was carried out within the past decade by the use of photographic Fabry-Perot interferometry, in the H (alpha) line and lately also in the N IIlambda 6584 line. Among the score of objects studied three H II regions and one planetary nebula possess pronounced symmetry around their ionizing stars. Velocity data combined with morphological properties suggest strongly that the nebulae were formed essentially by matter ejected from the central star and that ejection occurred preferentially from diametrially opposite regions on the star, that is, in a bi-polar fashion. The nebulae are discussed individually and a model for the ejection mechanism is presented.

Nondestructive characterization of RBSOA of high-power bipolar transistors

Reverse-bias safe operating area (RBSOA) of high-power Darlington transistors is characterized using a 120 A/1000 V nondestructive reverse-bias second breakdown tester designed and fabricated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Elaborate RBSOA characteristics are generated with different forward/reverse base drives and collector current levels. The effects of elevated case temperature and second-base drive on RBSOA of four-terminal Darlington devices are also discussed.

The spectrophotometry and chemical composition of the oxygen-poor bipolar nebula NGC 6164-5

The paper presents new ground-based and IUE spectrophotometry of several positions in NGC 6164-5 surrounding the Population I Of star HD 148937. Electron temperatures, densities, and abundances are derived for the various positions in the nebula using spectral line information. For all of the regions observed, Ne/H is depleted by an amount comparable to O/H, while S/H and Ar/H have normal values. The results suggest that the nebula consists partly of material ejected from inner shell-burning regions of the Of star. In effect, HD 148937 is older and more advanced than what was previously thought.

High power bipolar lead-acid batteries

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), with interest in advanced energy storage systems, is involved in the development of a unique lead acid battery design. This battery utilizes the same combination of lead and lead dioxide active materials present in the automobile starting battery. However, it can provide 2 to 10 times the power while minimizing volume and weight. The typical starting battery is described as a monopolar type using one current collector for both the positive and negative plate of adjacent cells. Specific power as high as 2.5 kW/kg was projected for 30 second periods with as many as 2000 recharge cycles.

A bipolar population counter using wave pipelining to achieve 2.5 x normal clock frequency

Wave pipelining is a technique for pipelining digital systems that can increase clock frequency in practical circuits without increasing the number of storage elements. In wave pipelining, multiple coherent waves of data are sent through a block of combinational logic by applying new inputs faster than the delay through the logic. The throughput of a 63-b CML population counter was increased from 97 to 250 MHz using wave pipelining. The internal circuit is flowthrough combinational logic. Novel CAD methods have balanced all input-to-output paths to about the same delay. This allows multiple data waves to propagate in sequence when the circuit is clocked faster than its propagation delay.

The origin of morphological asymmetries in bipolar active regions

A series of 3D numerical simulations was carried out to examine the dynamical evolution of emerging flux loops in the solar convective envelope. The innermost portions of the loops are anchored beneath the base of the convective zone by the subadiabatic temperature gradient of the underlying overshoot region. It is found that, as the emerging loops approach the photosphere, the magnetic field strength of the leading side of each rising loop is about twice as large as that of the following side at the same depth. The evacuation of plasma out of the leading side of the rising loop results in an enhanced magnetic field strength there compared with the following side. It is argued that this result provides a natural explanation for the fact that the preceding (leading) polarity tends to have a less organized and more fragmented appearance, and that the preceding spots tend to be larger in area and fewer in number, and have a longer lifetime than the following spots.

Theoretical properties of Omega-loops in the convective zone of the Sun. 1: Emerging bipolar magnetic regions

It is proposed that the observed 500 G intensity of the magnetic fields emerging through the surface of the Sun can be understood from the Bernoulli effect in the upwelling Omega-loops of magnetic field. It is also proposed that the inferred 10(exp 5) G azimuthal flux bundles below the base of the convective zone can be understood as a consequence of the large-scale buoyancy associated with the upwelling fluid in and around the rising Omega-loop. The process fits in naturally with the Babcock-Leighton form of the solar alpha-omega-dynamo. The emerging Omega-loop implies the coherence of the upwelling all the way from the bottom of the convective zone, enhancing the convective heat transport to account for the observed variation of the solar irradiance by about two parts in 10(exp 3).

Displacement Damage in Bipolar Linear Integrated Circuits

Although many different processes can be used to manufacture linear integrated circuits, the process that is used for most circuits is optimized for high voltage -- a total power supply voltage of about 40 V -- and low cost. This process, which has changed little during the last twenty years, uses lateral and substrate p-n-p transistors. These p-n-p transistors have very wide base regions, increasing their sensitivity to displacement damage from electrons and protons. Although displacement damage effects can be easily treated for individual transistors, the net effect on linear circuits can be far more complex because circuit operation often depends on the interaction of several internal transistors. Note also that some circuits are made with more advanced processes with much narrower base widths. Devices fabricated with these newer processes are not expected to be significantly affected by displacement damage for proton fluences below 1 x 10(exp 12) p/sq cm. This paper discusses displacement damage in linear integrated circuits with more complex failure modes than those exhibited by simpler devices, such as the LM111 comparator, where the dominant response mode is gain degradation of the input transistor. Some circuits fail catastrophically at much lower equivalent total dose levels compared to tests with gamma rays. The device works satisfactorily up to nearly 1 Mrad(Si) when it is irradiated with gamma rays, but fails catastrophically between 50 and 70 krad(Si) when it is irradiated with protons.
