Further investigation on the fusion of 6 Li with 209 Bi target at near-barrier energies

The complete and incomplete fusion cross sections for 6 Li+ 209 Bi were measured using the in-beam γ-ray method around the Coulomb barrier. The cross sections of (deuteron captured) incomplete fusion (ICF) products were re-quantified experimentally for this reaction system. Here, the results reveal that the ICF cross section is equivalent to that of complete fusion (CF) above the Coulomb barrier and dominant near or below the Coulomb barrier. A theoretical calculation based on the continuum discretized coupled channel (CDCC) method was performed for the aforementioned CF and ICF cross sections; the result is consistent with the experiments. The universal fusion function (UFF) was also compared with the measured CF cross section for different barrier parameters, demonstrating that the CF suppression factor is significantly influenced by the choice of potential, which can reflect both dynamic and static effects of breakup on the fusion process.

A novel liquid argon purity monitor based on 207 Bi

A novel liquid argon purity monitor based on a 207 Bi radioactive source, emitting monochromatic internal-conversion electrons, is presented. This new monitor allows for a very precise and fast measurement of the electronegative impurities concentration in liquid argon. It can be operated continuously in liquid argon TPC experiments without interfering with the main detector operation. Different drift lengths can be assembled for the proposed device, to assess a large range of liquid argon purities while minimizing systematic uncertainties. Two prototypes have been built and successfully operated in dedicated test stands. The results and performance are reported.

Ultrafast bipolar conductivity driven by intense single-cycle terahertz pulses in a topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3

We present the measurement of ultrafast terahertz (THz) conductivity of a 50 nm thick topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3 at low temperature 5 K by using a THz pump and THz probe spectroscopy scheme. Here, the THz conductivity driven by a single-cycle intense THz pump exhibits a bipolar lineshape and frequency-dependent relaxation dynamics due to the separated surface and bulk charge carriers with distinctly different scattering rates and relaxation times. We also demonstrate THz pump field-dependent excitation of the surface and bulk spectral weights, which suggests one of the optimal THz excitation conditions for generating the most charge carriers from the topology-protected surface state relative to the bulk. This also allows THz control of surface and bulk transport channels in a selective way.

Anisotropic electron damping and energy gap in Bi 2 ⁢Sr 2 ⁢CaCu 2 ⁢O 8+𝛿

The many-body electron-electron interaction in cuprates causes broadening of the electronic bands in 𝒌 space, leading to a deviation from the standard Fermi liquid. While a 𝒌-dependent anisotropic electronic scattering (𝒌-DAES) has been assessed by photoemission, its fingerprint in 𝑸 space has been scarcely considered. Here, we explore the 𝑸-dependent electron dynamics in optimally doped Bi 2⁢ Sr 2 ⁢CaCu 2 ⁢O 8+𝛿 through the evolution of low-energy charge excitations as measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). In the normal state, the RIXS spectra display a continuum of excitations down to 0 meV, while the superconducting state features a spectral weight suppression below 80 meV without any enhancement at higher energies. To interpret the energy and 𝑸 evolution of our data, we introduce a phenomenological expression of the charge susceptibility by including the 𝒌-DAES. We show that only the charge susceptibility with 𝒌-DAES captures the RIXS data, highlighting the importance of 𝒌-DAES when describing the 𝑸 dependence of charge excitations from 0 to a few eV scale. Furthermore, we also find that the inclusion of 𝒌-DAES is essential when quantitative parameters such as the electronic energy gap are extracted from RIXS data.

Observation of multiple flat bands and Van Hove singularities in the distorted kagome metal NdTi 3 Bi 4

Kagome materials have attracted enormous research interest recently owing to their diverse topological phases and manifestation of electronic correlation. Here, in this study, we present the electronic structure of a distorted ferromagnetic kagome metal, NdTi 3 ⁢Bi 4 , exhibiting a transition temperature of 9 K. Our investigation employs a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We discover the presence of two “flat” bands which are found to originate from the kagome structure formed by Ti atoms with a major contribution from Ti 𝑑 𝑥⁢𝑦 and Ti 𝑑 𝑥 2 −𝑦 2 orbitals. We also observed multiple Van Hove singularities (VHSs) in its electronic structure, with one VHS lying near the Fermi level. The ARPES data reveal the existence of Dirac cone at the $\overline{𝐾}$ point, a finding which is corroborated by our DFT calculations. These findings present a detailed electronic structure capable of hosting correlation-driven phenomenon in this novel ferromagnetic kagome metal.

Absence of μ SR evidence for magnetic order in the pseudogap phase of Bi 2 + x Sr 2 - x CaCu 2 O 8 + δ

We present an extended zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-$µSR$) study of overdoped $Bi_{2+x}Sr_{2-x}\,CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) single crystals, intended to elucidate the origin of weak quasistatic magnetism previously detected by $µSR$ in the superconducting and normal states of optimallydoped and overdoped samples. New results on heavily-overdoped single crystals show a similar monotonically decreasing ZF-$µSR$ relaxation rate with increasing temperature that persists above the pseudogap (PG) temperature $T^*$ and does not evolve with hole doping ($p$). Additional measurements using an ultra-low background apparatus confirm that this behavior is an intrinsic property of Bi2212, which cannot be due to magnetic order associated with the PG phase. Instead we show that the temperature-dependent relaxation rate is most likely caused by structural changes that modify the contribution of the nuclear dipole fields to the ZF-$µSR$ signal. Finally, our results for Bi2212 emphasize the importance of not assuming the nuclear-dipole field contribution is independent of temperature in ZF-$µSR$ studies of high-temperature (high-$T_c$) cuprate superconductors, and do not support a recent $µSR$ study of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$ that claims to detect magnetic order in the PG phase.

Extracting correlation effects from momentum-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy: Synergistic origin of the dispersion kink in Bi 2.1 Sr 1.9 CaCu 2 O 8 + x

We employ momentum-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (M-EELS) on Bi 2.1 Sr 1.9 CaCu 2 O 8 + x to resolve the issue of the kink feature in the electron dispersion widely observed in the cuprates. To this end, we utilize the GW approximation to relate the density response function measured in M-EELS to the self-energy, isolating contributions from phonons, electrons, and the momentum dependence of the effective interaction to the decay rates. The phononic contributions, present in the M-EELS spectra due to electron-phonon coupling, lead to kink features in the corresponding single-particle spectra at energies between 40 and 80 meV, independent of the doping level. We find that a repulsive interaction constant in momentum space is able to yield the kink attributed to phonons in ARPES. Hence, our analysis of the M-EELS spectra points to local repulsive interactions as a factor that enhances the spectroscopic signatures of electron-phonon coupling in cuprates. We conclude that the strength of the kink feature in cuprates is determined by the combined action of electron-phonon coupling and electron-electron interactions.

Revised phase diagram of the high- T c cuprate superconductor Pb-doped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ revealed by anisotropic transport measurements

Although phase diagrams can be leveraged to investigate high transition temperature (high-T c ) superconductivity, the issue has not been discussed thoroughly. In this study, we elucidate the phase diagram of the overdoped side of high-T c cuprates via systematic anisotropic transport measurements for Pb-doped Bi-2212 single crystals. We demonstrate that the characteristic temperatures of the “weak” pseudogap opening and electronic coherence cross each other at a critical doping level, while those of the “strong” pseudogap merges into that of superconducting fluctuations above the critical doping level. Her the results indicate the importance of Mottness in high-T c superconductivity.

One-dimensional Rashba states with unconventional spin texture in Bi chains

Spin-polarized electrons confined in low-dimensional structures are of high interest for spintronics applications. Here, in this study, we investigate the electronic structure of an ordered array of Bi monomer and dimer chains on the Ag(110) surface. By means of spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find Rashba-Bychkov split bands crossing the Fermi level with one-dimensional constant energy contours. These bands are up-spin polarized for positive wave vectors and down-spin polarized for negative wave vectors, at variance with the Rashba-Bychkov model that predicts a pair of states with opposite spin in each half of the surface Brillouin zone. Density functional theory shows that spin-selective hybridization with the Ag bulk bands originates this unconventional spin texture.

Universal relation between doping content and normal-state resistance in gate voltage tuned ultrathin Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + x flakes

We report gate voltage tunable ultra-thin high-T c cuprates supply a unique platform to investigate the electronic phase diagram and superconductor-insulator transition. One of the challenges in this field is the precise determination of the doping content in the underdoped non-superconducting region. Here we report the discovery of a universal relation between the doping content p and the normal-state resistance at a fixed temperature R(T f ), p = α + β ln[1/R(T f )], in the ultra-thin Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x flakes. The in-depth analysis shows that the evolution of carrier scattering probability with doping content and the change of effective mass caused by superconductor-insulator transition are two key factors leading to this logarithmic relation. Based on our finding, the more precise electronic phase diagram can be established. In addition, the superconductor-insulator transition is verified to be a quantum phase transition using a finite size scaling analysis. The scaling exponent z v is found to have a close correlation with the disorder levels. The present result provides an important foundation to investigate the fascinating electronic states in the ultra-thin cuprates.

Identification of a characteristic doping for charge order phenomena in Bi-2212 cuprates via RIXS

Identifying quantum critical points (QCPs) and their associated fluctuations may hold the key to unraveling the unusual electronic phenomena observed in cuprate superconductors. Recently, signatures of quantum fluctuations associated with charge order (CO) have been inferred from the anomalous enhancement of CO excitations that accompany the reduction of the CO order parameter in the superconducting state. Furthermore, to gain more insight about the interplay between CO and superconductivity, we investigate the doping dependence of this phenomenon throughout the Bi-2212 cuprate phase diagram using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu L 3 edge. As doping increases, the CO wavevector decreases, saturating near a commensurate value of 0.25 r.l.u. beyond a characteristic doping p c , where the correlation length becomes shorter than the apparent periodicity (4a 0 ). Such behavior is indicative of the fluctuating nature of the CO; and the proliferation of CO excitations in the superconducting state also appears strongest at p c , consistent with expected behavior at a CO QCP. Intriguingly, p c appears to be near optimal doping, where the superconducting transition temperature T c is maximal.

Magnetic interactions of 4 f electrons in the topological insulator chalcogenide Bi 2 Se 3

Here, the gap opening mechanism of a topological insulator, the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the axion physics are still pressing open questions and a microscopic viewpoint to further understand the role of magnetism in topology is highly desirable. In this work we have performed a micro scopic investigation, by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) along with complementary bulk measurements, on the chalcogenide (Bi 1-x Gd x ) 2 Se 3 (x = 0, 0.001, 0.002 and 0.006). Our analysis of the Gd 3+ spin dynamics reveal no significant change of the Fermi surface as a function of Gd 3+ concentration, which indicates that the 4f magnetism is different from the non-local effects induced by transition metals (d electrons) substitutions. Additionally, we observe an unusual evolution of the Gd 3+ ESR spectra as a function of the applied magnetic field, which we discuss considering the magnetic interaction between Gd 3+ 4f electrons and impurity centers such as Se vacancies. This interaction would give rise to a local weak antilocalization effect surrounding the Gd 3+ ions. Such mechanism is observable due to particular details of the Gd 3+ 4f electrons magnetism in this system compared to d electrons. Our work points out that rare earth substitutions in this model topological insulator is a promising path to explore the axion insulating systems.

Persistent Josephson tunneling between Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + x flakes twisted by 45 ° across the superconducting dome

There is a heated debate on the Josephson effect in twisted Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x flakes. Recent experimental results suggest the presence of either anomalously isotropic pairing or exotic d+id-wave pairing, in addition to the commonly believed d-wave one. Here, we address this controversy by fabricating ultraclean junctions with uncompromised crystalline quality and stoichiometry at the junction interfaces. In the optimally doped regime, we obtain prominent Josephson coupling (2-4 mV) in multiple junctions with the twist angle of 45°, in sharp contrast to a recent report that shows two orders of magnitude suppression around 45° from the value at 0°. We further extend this study to the previously unexplored overdoped regime and observe pronounced Josephson tunneling at 45° together with Josephson diode effect up to 50 K. In conclusion, our work helps establish the persistent presence of an isotropic pairing component across the entire superconducting phase diagram.

Exchange coupling in $\mathrm{Bi_2}$ $\mathrm{Se_3}$ / $\mathrm{EuSe}$ heterostructures and evidence of interfacial antiferromagnetic order formation

Spatial confinement of electronic topological surface states (TSSs) in topological insulators poses a formidable challenge because TSSs are protected by time-reversal symmetry. In previous works formation of a gap in the electronic spectrum of TSSs has been successfully demonstrated in topological insulator/magnetic material heterostructures, where ferromagnetic exchange interactions locally lift the time-reversal symmetry. Here we report experimental evidence of exchange interaction between a topological insulator $\mathrm{Bi_2}$ $\mathrm{Se_3}$ and a magnetic insulator EuSe. Spin-polarized neutron reflectometry reveals a reduction of the in-plane magnetic susceptibility within a 2 nm interfacial layer of EuSe, and the combination of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and Hall measurements points to the formation of an interfacial layer with a suppressed net magnetic moment. This suppressed magnetization survives up to temperatures five times higher than the Néel temperature of EuSe. Its origin is attributed to the formation of an interfacial antiferromagnetic state. Abrupt resistance changes observed in high magnetic fields are consistent with antiferromagnetic domain reconstruction affecting transport in a TSS via exchange coupling. Importantly, the high-temperature local control of TSSs with zero net magnetization unlocks new opportunities for the design of electronic, spintronic, and quantum computation devices, ranging from quantization of Hall conductance in zero fields to spatial localization of non-Abelian excitations in superconducting topological qubits.

Hybridization of Bogoliubov Quasiparticles between Adjacent CuO 2 Layers in the Triple-Layer Cuprate Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10 + δ Studied by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

Hybridization of Bogoliubov quasiparticles (BQPs) between the CuO 2 layers in the triple-layer cuprate high-temperature superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 Cu 2 Cu 3 O 10+δ is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In the superconducting state, an anticrossing gap opens between the outer- and inner-BQP bands, which we attribute primarily to interlayer single-particle hopping with possible contributions from interlayer Cooper pairing. We find that the d-wave superconducting gap of both BQP bands smoothly develops with momentum without an abrupt jump in contrast to a previous ARPES study. Hybridization between the BQPs also gradually increases in going from the off nodal to the antinodal region, which is explained by the momentum dependence of the interlayer single-particle hopping. As possible mechanisms for the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature, the hybridization between the BQPs as well as the combination of phonon modes of the triple CuO 2 layers and spin fluctuations represented by a four-well model are discussed.

Ferroelectric Semimetals with α-Bi/SnSe van der Waals Heterostructures and Their Topological Currents

We show that proximity effects can be utilized to engineer van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) displaying semimetallic spin-ferroelectricity locking, where ferroelectricity and semimetallic spin states are confined to different layers, but are correlated by means of proximity effects. Our findings are supported by first principles calculations involving α-Bi/SnSe bilayers. We show that such systems support ferroelectrically switchable nonlinear anomalous Hall effect originating from large Berry curvature dipoles as well as direct and inverse spin Hall effects with giant bulk spin-charge interconversion efficiencies. In conclusion, the giant efficiencies are consequences of the proximity-induced semimetallic nature of low energy electron states, which are shown to behave as two-dimensional pseudo-Weyl fermions by means of symmetry analysis and first principles calculations as well as direct angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements.

Photon energy and polarization-dependent electronic structure of Cr-doped Bi 2 Se 3

In this article, we report a comparative study of the electronic structure of Cr-doped and pristine Bi 2 Se 3 . Circular dichroism and photon-energy-dependent angle-resolved photoemission experiments were performed. Even though the surface states seen on the Cr-doped samples are gapped, they exhibit strong circular dichroism, for which we provide its origin in accordance with the nontrivial band structure of the bulk. We note the surface electronic structure measurements with linear and circular polarized light show signatures that the orbital composition of the surface states is changed with Cr doping. Our observations not only provide further spectroscopic information about topological materials, but also promotes an alternative experimental tool to control their spin-orbital texture.

Thermomagnetic properties of Bi 2 Te 3 single crystal in the temperature range from 55 K to 380 K

Magnetothermoelectric transport provides an understanding of coupled electron-hole-phonon current in topological materials and has applications in energy conversion and cooling. In this paper, we study the Nernst coefficient, the magneto-Seebeck coefficient, and the magnetoresistance of single-crystalline Bi 2 Te 3 under external magnetic field in the range of –3T to 3T and in the temperature range of 55 K to 380 K. Moreau's relation is employed to justify both the overall trend of the Nernst coefficient and the temperature at which this coefficient changes sign. We observe a nonlinear relationship between the Nernst coefficient and the applied magnetic field in the temperature range of 55 K to 255 K. An increase in both the Nernst coefficient and the magneto-Seebeck coefficient is observed as the temperature is reduced which can be attributed to the increased mobility of the carriers at lower temperatures. First-principles density functional theory calculations were carried out to physically model the experimental data including electronic and transport properties. Simulation findings agreed with the experiments and provide a theoretical insight to justify the measurements.
