Slope of the upper critical field at T c in two-band superconductors with nonmagnetic disorder: s + + superconductivity in Ba 1 − x K x Fe 2 As 2

A recent theory of the disorder-dependent slope of the upper critical field at the superconducting transition temperature T c , defined as S ≡ |dH c2 /dT| T→T c , is extended to multiband superconductors aimed at iron-based superconductors, considering two constant gaps of different magnitudes and, potentially, different signs. Here, we show that the slope S decreases with increasing nonmagnetic scattering rate P in the s ± pairing state and increases in the s ++ superconductor for a reasonable range of parameters. The experiment shows that in a typical iron-based superconductor, Ba 1–x K x Fe 2 As 2 (BaK122), the nonmagnetic disorder induced by electron irradiation leads to an increasing S(P) across the superconducting “dome,” at different x. This implies that Ba 1–x K x Fe 2 As 2 is likely an s ++ superconductor with two effective gaps of different magnitudes, at least at moderate doping levels, x< 0.6. This work reopens a decade-long discussion about the nature of the superconducting order parameter in iron pnictides.

Electronic and magnetic structures of a mixed triple perovskite: Ba 3 NiRuIrO 9

In search of spin-orbit coupling driven nonmagnetic J = 0 ground state and excitonic magnetism, various pentavalent iridates have been studied in recent years. However, a finite moment was observed in most of the cases due to solid state effects. Here, in this work, we investigate the electronic and magnetic structure of 6H hexagonal compound Ba 3 NiRuIrO 9 , where Ir 5+ is present along with magnetic Ni 2+ and Ru 5+ ions. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) experiments demonstrate the appearance of short-range magnetic ordering below 170 K and a long-range antiferromagnetic ordering below 80 K. The refinement of the NPD pattern further shows that the Ru and Ir moments interact antiferromagnetically within the dimer and interact ferromagnetically with the Ni sublattice. These experimental findings have been complemented by first-principles density functional theory calculations incorporating spin-orbit coupling effects and electronic correlations for the transitional metal d states. The computed magnetocrystalline anisotropy is also found to be significant and the crystallographic c axis comes out to be the easy axis of magnetization, consistent with the spin alignment direction found from NPD. This study shows that the mixed ruthenate iridate triple perovskite series is a promising family to study the interplay among spin-orbit coupling, electron correlation, and electron filling as a variety of Ba 3 M RuIrO 9 with M as a transition metal ion, rare-earth ion, and alkali metal ions can be synthesized.

β decay of Ba 141

The β-decay strength function of nuclides produced in fission is important as it dictates the distribution of decay energy between electrons, neutrinos, and γ rays and so is critical for calculating decay heat in reactors and for estimating the reactor antineutrino spectrum. Several experimental techniques are available to determine this strength function, including electron spectroscopy, γ-ray calorimetry (TAGS spectroscopy), and detailed, high-resolution spectroscopy with modern large high-purity germanium arrays. This work investigates the decay of the well-known and strongly produced fission fragment 141 Ba. A beam of 141 Cs was implanted at the target position of the Gammasphere and the subsequent decay of the daughter 141 Ba was studied. Extensive decay spectroscopy was possible up to the decay Q value of 3.197(7) MeV, including a significant extension of the level scheme and detailed angular correlation measurements for all levels with greater than 0.25% β feeding. The distribution of the β-decay strength was then inferred and compared to previous calorimetric studies. In conclusion, the agreement was excellent and provides a benchmark for comparing strength function methods and data for a more detailed understanding of the structure of 141 La.

Coexistence of Reflection Asymmetric and Symmetric Shapes in $^{144}\mathrm{Ba}$

Level structures in the neutron-rich $^{144}\mathrm{Ba}$ nucleus have been reinvestigated by measuring prompt gamma rays in the spontaneous fission of $^{252}\mathrm{Cf}$. The previous $s = +1$ octupole band structure with reflection asymmetric shape has been expanded, and a side quadrupole band structure based on a $3^+$ state with reflection symmetric shape is identified. Thus, the results show the coexistence of reflection asymmetric and symmetric shapes in $^{144}\mathrm{Ba}$. This is a first identification of such a shape coexistence structure in a nuclear structure. Finally, the other structural characteristics are discussed.

Doping Dependence of 2-Spinon Excitations in the Doped 1D Cuprate Ba 2 ⁢CuO 3+δ

Recent photoemission experiments on the quasi-one-dimensional Ba-based cuprates suggest that doped holes experience an attractive potential not captured using the simple Hubbard model. This observation has garnered significant attention due to its potential relevance to Cooper pair formation in high-T c cuprate superconductors. To scrutinize this assertion, we examined signatures of such an attractive potential in doped 1D cuprates Ba 2 ⁢CuO 3+δ by measuring the dispersion of the 2-spinon excitations using Cu L 3 -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Upon doping, the 2-spinon excitations appear to weaken, with a shift of the minimal position corresponding to the nesting vector of the Fermi points, q F . Notably, we find that the energy scale of the 2-spinons near the Brillouin zone boundary is substantially softened compared to that predicted by the Hubbard model in one dimension. Finally, such a discrepancy implies missing ingredients, which lends support for the presence of an additional attractive potential between holes.

Magnetic anisotropy and two-dimensional short-range chemical ordering in Ba 1−𝑥 ⁢Na 𝑥 ⁢Fe 2 ⁢As 2

A true understanding of the properties of pnictide superconductors requires the development of high-quality materials and performing measurements designed to unravel their intrinsic properties and short-range nematic correlations which are often obscured by extrinsic effects such as poor crystallinity, inhomogeneity, domain formation, and twinning. Here, in this paper, we report the systematic growth of high-quality Na-substituted BaFe 2 As 2 single crystals and their characterization using pulsed magnetic fields x-ray diffraction and x-ray diffuse scattering. Analysis of the properties and compositions of the highest-quality crystals shows that their actual Na stoichiometry is about 50-60% of the nominal content and that the targeted production of crystals with specific compositions is accessible. We derived a reliable equation to estimate the Na stoichiometry based on the measured superconducting T c of these materials. Attempting to force spin reorientation and induce tetragonality, orthorhombic Ba 1-x Na x Fe 2 As 2 single crystals subjected to out-of-plane magnetic fields up to 31.4T are found to exhibit strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy demonstrated by the insufficiency of such high fields in manipulating the relative population of their twinned domains or in suppressing the orthorhombic order. Broad x-ray diffuse-intensity rods observed at temperatures between 30 and 300 K uncover short-range structural correlations. Local structure modeling together with 3D-Δ pair-distribution function mapping of real-space interatomic vectors show that the diffuse scattering arises from in-plane short-range chemical correlations of the Ba and Na atoms coupled with short-range atomic displacements within the same plane due to an effective size difference between the two atomic species.

Potential Lifshitz transition at optimal substitution in nematic pnictide Ba 1 x Sr x Ni 2 As 2

BaNi 2 As 2 is a structural analog of the pnictide superconductor BaFe 2 As 2 , which, like the iron-based superconductors, hosts a variety of ordered phases including charge density waves (CDWs), electronic nematicity, and superconductivity. Upon isovalent Sr substitution on the Ba site, the charge and nematic orders are suppressed, followed by a sixfold enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature (T c ). To understand the mechanisms responsible for enhancement of T c , we present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of the Ba 1-x Sr x Ni 2 As 2 series, which agree well with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations throughout the substitution range. Analysis of our ARPES-validated DFT results indicates a Lifshitz transition and reasonably nested electron and hole Fermi pockets near optimal substitution where T c is maximum. These nested pockets host Ni d xz /d yz orbital compositions, which we associate with the enhancement of nematic fluctuations, revealing unexpected connections to the iron-pnictide superconductors. This gives credence to a scenario in which nematic fluctuations drive an enhanced T c .

An Analytical Tool to Evaluate Defect Thermodynamics of (La,Ba)Fe1-xMxO3-δ Perovskites for Solid-Oxide Cell Applications

A modeling tool of the defect thermodynamics of (La,Ba)Fe1-xMxO3-δ perovskites which includes energetic information about oxygen vacancy formation, hydration, hydride formation, and charge disproportionation reactions has been developed1. This tool incorporates defect energies and entropies expressed as sixth order polynomial functions to allow refinements of the defect reaction equilibrium constants in the thermodynamic analysis. Calculation of (La,Ba)Fe1-xMxO3-δ Brouwer diagrams as a function of pO2/pH2O and pH2/H2O in a range of temperatures of interest is facilitated by this modeling tool. The results obtained can provide direct guidance how the electronic and ionic defect concentrations of the triple conducting perovskite materials can be used to optimize performance of solid oxide cells for energy applications. The impact of magnetic and electronic structures of the perovskites on the defect reaction energies and entropies as obtained from density function theory modeling and the role played by hydride defect species will also be discussed.

Migration of 60 Co, 133 Ba, 137 Cs, and 152 Eu from cementitious wasteforms in field lysimeter experiments

Safe and effective storage of radioactive waste is essential to protect environmental health. Due to the potential for accidental releases and the severity of the associated risks, it is imperative to further understand radionuclide transport should an accident occur. This work analyzed the vadose zone migration of radionuclides from cementitious wasteforms at the Savannah River Site after ten years. The observed radionuclides are prominent constituents of radioactive waste or analogs for other groups or series of radionuclides. Lysimeters were first analyzed in 2016 using a collimated high-purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometer to non-destructively measure the concentration of each radionuclide in the sediment column as a function of depth. Following these measurements, the lysimeters were redeployed in the field for another 4 years. All radionuclides in all lysimeters were observed to transport further during the redeployment period; however, the extent of migration varied with the material used for introduction. Except for 137 Cs, migration through the sediment control system increased with decreasing ionic potential (ionic charge/radius); migration order: 152 Eu< 137 Cs< 60 Co< 133 Ba. Overall, the cementitious wasteforms were observed to decrease radionuclide migration extent relative to the filter paper. In both cementitious wasteforms, the migration extent increased in the order 152 Eu< 133 Ba< 60 Co< 137 Cs. However, less migration was measured when the radionuclides were incorporated into a reducing grout wasteform. The novelty of this paper is the demonstration of a technique capable of creating non-destructive measurements over decade time scales. Ultimately, this work provides insight into the long-term migration of alkali, alkali earth, divalent transition metal, and trivalent actinide element isotopes.

Cosmic-ray abundances of Sn, Te, Xe, and Ba nuclei measured on HEAO 3

The results of an analysis of HEAO 3 Heavy Nuclei Experimental data covering 440 days of observations of Sn-Ba nuclei in cosmic rays are reported. The particles were detected by a Cernkov counter, and a Z-squared ceiling was calculated to normalize the histograms produced. The observed large abundance of Sn and Ba relative to other elements in the region of interest indicated a predominance of the s-process in the source of the particles. When account was taken of first ionization potential effects, the data indicated that the material could be solar system in origin. A source dominated by the r-process nucleosynthesis was ruled out at the 0.93 confidence level.

Upper critical field of high temperature Y(1.2)Ba(0.8)CuO(4-delta) superconductor

A 20-T high-field magnet is used to measure electrical resistance as a function of temperature in the Y(1.2)Ba(0.8)CuO(4-delta) superconductor. The temperature dependence of the critical field, Hc2(T), is obtained from the superconduction transition. A Hc2(O) value of 166T is determined which is the highest critical field yet reported. Results show Y(1.2)Ba(0.8)CuO(4-delta) to be a 90K Type-II superconductor, with a lower critical field Hc1(O) of about 0.2T and a penetration depth of about 290 A.

Microstructure and magnetization of doped Y-Ba-Ca-O materials prepared by melt quench and post annealing method

Y-Ba-Cu-O bulk materials prepared using the melt quench and post annealing method were shown to have very high maximum as well as remanent magnetization. Studies were carried out on materials prepared using this method which deviate from the Y:Ba:Cu = 1:2:3 stoichiometry. In one series of materials, only the stoichiometry was changed, in particular by introducing an excess of yttrium. In other cases, dopants including several rare earths were introduced. Effects of variations in composition on microstructure and phase evolution are discussed, as well as effects on the magnetic susceptibility and on the magnetization. The results show that doped materials can exhibit improvements in magnetic properties. Furthermore, the use of dopants sheds light on the role of defect sites in flux pinning.

Superconductivity in the Sn-Ba-Sr-Y-Cu-O system

Since Bednorz and Muller discovered high-T(sub c) superconductivity in the La-Ba-Cu-O compound, several families of superconducting oxides have been synthesized. Here, researchers report the results of search for superconductivity in the compounds based on tin, which has a lone electron pair like Bi, Tl, Pb. The following compounds were synthesized: Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ba1Ca1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ba1Mg1Cu3Ox, Sn1Sr1Ca1Cu3Ox, Sn1Sr1Mg1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ca1Mg1Cu3Ox. The initial components were oxides and carbonates of the appropriate elements. Standard firing-grinding procedure was used. Final heating was carried out at 960 C during 12 hours. Then the samples were cooled inside the furnace. All the synthesis cycles were carried out in air atmosphere. Among the synthesized compounds only Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox showed remarkable conductivity. Other compounds were practically dielectrics. Presence of a possible superconductivity in Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox was defined by using the Meissner effect. At low temperature a deviation from paramagnetic behavior is observed. The hysteresis loops obtained at lower temperatures undoubtly testify to the presence of a superconductive phase in the sample. However, the part of the superconductive phase in the Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox ceramic turned out to be small, less than 2 percent, which agrees with the estimation from magnetic data. In order to increase the content of the superconductive phase two-valent cations Ba, Sr were partially substituted by univalent (K) and three-valent ones (Y).

All high Tc edge-geometry weak links utilizing Y-Ba-Cu-O barrier layers

High quality YBa2Cu3O(7-x) normal-metal/YBa2Cu3O(7-x) edge-geometry weak links have been fabricated using nonsuperconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O barrier layers deposited by laser ablation at reduced growth temperatures. Devices incorporating 25-100 A thick barrier layers exhibit current-voltage characteristics consistent with the resistively shunted junction model, with strong microwave and magnetic field response at temperatures up to 85 K. The critical currents vary exponentially with barrier thickness, and the resistances scale linearly with Y-Ba-Cu-O interlayer thickness and device area, indicating good barrier uniformity, with an effective mormal metal coherence length of 20 A.

s-process Ba isotopic compositions in presolar SiC from the Murchison meteorite

We have measured, by thermal ionization mass spectrometry, the isotopic composition of Ba in interstellar SiC-enriched samples (the KJ series) prepared from the Murchison meteorite. Ba in these samples is strongly enriched in components plausibly understood as s-process nucleosynthetic products. Inferred s-process compositions are different from the average s-process contribution to solar system materials in the sense of indicating lower effective neutron exposure. There are variations in s-process compositions which correlate with grain size, indicating lower neutron exposure for the larger grains. The inferred s-process compositions differ significantly from previous theoretical predictions, indicating the need for revision of relevant neutron capture cross sections and providing a target for more detailed modeling of s-process nucleosynthesis in specific stellar environments.

A new series of oxycarbonate superconductors (Cu(0.5)C(0.5))(m)Ba(m+1)Ca(n-1)Cu(n)O2(m+n)+1

We found a new series of oxycarbonate superconductors in the Ba-CaCu-C-O system under high pressure of 5 GPa. Their ideal formula is (Cu(0.5)C(0.5)(m)Ba(m+1)Ca(n-1)Cu(n)O2)((m+n)+1) ((Cu,C)-m(m+1)(n-1)n). Thus far, n = 3, 4 members of the m = 1 series, (Cu,C)-1223 and (Cu,C)-1234, have been prepared in bulk while n = 4, 5 members, (Cu,C)-2334 and (Cu,C)-2345, have been prepared for the m = 2 series. (Cu,C)-1223 shows superconductivity below 67 K while T(sub c)'s of other compounds are above 110 K. In particular, (Cu,C)-1234 has the highest T(sub c) of 117 K.
