Assessment of Energy Technology Options for the Island of Molokai, Hawaii: Analysis of Floating Solar, Pumped Storage Hydropower, and Backup Energy Systems [Slides]

This presentation summarizes analysis done by researchers at the National Laboratory of the Rockies and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to evaluate the potential for and explore project concepts of electricity generation and storage additions on the island of Molokai, Hawaii, as identified in the Community Energy Resilience Action Plan (CERAP) by the Molokai Clean Energy Hui (MCEH), Sustainable Molokai, and the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI). These electricity generation and storage additions include distributed photovoltaics (PV), battery energy storage, and generators for critical facilities on the island that can provide backup energy to the facilities during grid disruptions and outages, a floating PV (FPV) system on Kualapuu Reservoir, and pumped storage hydropower (PSH) systems scaled to act as a significant or primary source of energy storage on the Molokai grid. This presentation accompanies the full technical report published under the same title.

Summary of GFL Inverter Capability and Performance: Malawi [Slides]

This presentation provides a comprehensive comparison of inverter-based resource (IBR) technical requirements across multiple international grid codes - including IEEE 2800, ESO, EirGrid, and Malawi's evolving regulatory framework - to support capacity building for electricity-sector institutions in Malawi. It highlights key performance expectations for grid-following (GFL) inverters across critical domains such as primary and fast frequency response, ramping behavior, frequency and voltage ride-through capabilities, reactive power and voltage control, ROCOF withstand, phase jump tolerance, system strength considerations, protection schemes, and dynamic modeling requirements. Emphasizing a "Do no harm, do something, do more" philosophy, the document synthesizes best practices and operational benchmarks to guide the integration and stability of inverter-based resources within Malawi's power system. The presentation forms part of the SABESS Center of Excellence initiative supported by the Global Energy Alliance for People and the Planet.

Commercial and Industrial Energy Procurement in Nigeria: A Consumer's Guidebook

Across Africa, countries have incorporated a variety of new energy sources into their energy mix to account for increasing demand. In Nigeria, electricity consumption per capita has grown nearly 50% in the past 20 years. To address rising demand for energy in Nigeria, the country has passed several recent policies and regulations aimed at increasing energy generation across the country, improving the country's transmission infrastructure, and ensuring that electricity reliably reaches end users, including commercial and industrial (C&I) customers. This guidebook is designed for C&I customers in Nigeria to use in the consideration of procuring such onsite, captive energy systems to supplement their energy needs. Each section of this guidebook touches on a step of the procurement process and details the relevant stakeholders, processes, and data needed to make decisions during that step.
