Impact of ITCZ width on global climate: ITCZ-MIP

Abstract. The width of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affects tropical rainfall, Earth's albedo, large-scale circulation, and climate sensitivity. To better understand the ITCZ width and its effects on global climate, we present a protocol to force changes in ITCZ width in climate models. Starting from an aquaplanet configuration with a slab ocean, adding surface heat fluxes in the deep tropics forces the ITCZ to narrow, and subtracting them causes it to widen. The protocol successfully generates changes in ITCZ width in all four climate models used in this study. ITCZ width in each model responds linearly to forcing magnitude and sign. Comparing across the four climate models, a response to varying ITCZ width that is remarkably consistent among models is the ITCZ strength, which is greater the narrower the ITCZ. On the other hand, the effect of varying ITCZ width on climate sensitivity is divergent among our four models, varying even in sign. Results from this pilot study highlight the connections between surface fluxes, ITCZ width, and the wider climate. A comprehensive model intercomparison project (MIP) has the potential to advance understanding of both the physical processes shaping ITCZ width and its influence on remote atmospheric circulations and global climate.

A Parameterization of Sub-grid Topographical Effects on Solar Radiation in the E3SM Land Model (Version 1.0): Implementation and Evaluation Over the Tibetan Plateau

Topography exerts significant influences on the incoming solar radiation at the land surface. A few stand-alone regional and global atmospheric models have included parameterizations for sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation. However, nearly all Earth System Models (ESMs) that participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) use a plane-parallel (PP) radiative transfer scheme that assumes the terrain is flat. In this study, we incorporated a well-validated sub-grid topographic (TOP) parameterization in the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Land Model (ELM) version 1.0 to quantify the effects of sub-grid topography on solar radiation flux, including the shadow effects and multi-scattering between adjacent terrain. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data was used to evaluate the performance of ELM. We studied the role of sub-grid topography by performing ELM simulations with the PP and TOP schemes over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Additional ELM simulations were performed at multiple spatial resolutions to investigate the role of spatial scale on sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation. When compared to MODIS data, incorporating the sub-grid topographic effects overall reduces the biases of ELM in simulating surface energy balance, snow cover and surface temperature especially in the high-elevation and snow-cover regions over the TP. Topography has non-negligible effects on surface energy budget, snow cover, and surface temperature over the TP. The absolute differences in surface energy fluxes for net solar radiation, latent heat flux, and sensible heat flux between TOP and PP exceed 20 W/m 2 , 10 W/m 2 , and 5 W/m 2 , respectively. The differences in land surface albedo, snow cover fraction, and surface temperature between TOP and PP exceed 0.1, 20%, and 1K, respectively. The magnitude of the sub-grid topographic effects is dependent on seasons and elevations, and is also sensitive to the spatial scales. Although the sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation are more significant with more spatial details at finer spatial scales, they cannot be simply neglected at coarse spatial scales. The inclusion of sub-grid topographic effects on solar radiation parameterization in ELM will contribute to advancing our understanding of the role of the surface topography on terrestrial processes over complex terrain.

BESS-STAIR: a framework to estimate daily, 30m, and all-weather crop evapotranspiration using multi-source satellite data for the US Corn Belt

Abstract. With increasing crop water demands and drought threats, mapping andmonitoring of cropland evapotranspiration (ET) at high spatial and temporalresolutions become increasingly critical for water management andsustainability. However, estimating ET from satellites for precise waterresource management is still challenging due to the limitations in bothexisting ET models and satellite input data. Specifically, the process of ETis complex and difficult to model, and existing satellite remote-sensing datacould not fulfill high resolutions in both space and time. To address theabove two issues, this study presents a new high spatiotemporal resolution ETmapping framework, i.e., BESS-STAIR, which integrates a satellite-drivenwater–carbon–energy coupled biophysical model, BESS (Breathing Earth SystemSimulator), with a generic and fully automated fusion algorithm, STAIR(SaTallite dAta IntegRation). In this framework, STAIR provides daily 30'mmultispectral surface reflectance by fusing Landsat and MODIS satellite datato derive a fine-resolution leaf area index and visible/near-infrared albedo, all of which, along with coarse-resolution meteorological and CO 2 data, are used to drive BESS to estimate gap-free 30 m resolution daily ET.We applied BESS-STAIR from 2000 through 2017 in six areas across the US CornBelt and validated BESS-STAIR ET estimations using flux-tower measurementsover 12 sites (85 site years). Results showed that BESS-STAIR daily ETachieved an overall R2=0.75, with root mean square error RMSE=0.93 mm d -1 and relative error RE =27.9 % when benchmarkedwith the flux measurements. In addition, BESS-STAIR ET estimations capturedthe spatial patterns, seasonal cycles, and interannual dynamics well indifferent sub-regions. The high performance of the BESS-STAIR frameworkprimarily resulted from (1) the implementation of coupled constraints onwater, carbon, and energy in BESS, (2) high-quality daily 30 m data from theSTAIR fusion algorithm, and (3) BESS's applicability under all-skyconditions. BESS-STAIR is calibration-free and has great potentials to be areliable tool for water resource management and precision agricultureapplications for the US Corn Belt and even worldwide given the globalcoverage of its input data.

Cloud optical depth and liquid effective radius retrievals from SPHOT zenith radiances

A new three-channel (440, 870, and 1640 nm) retrieval algorithm for cloud optical depth has recently been developed by Christine Chiu and her co-workers [Chiu et al., 2012]. This VAP is to implement the three-channel cloud optical depth retrieval algorithm as an ARM operational VAP. First, simultaneously retrieved cloud optical depth and effective radius datasets will be generated by using the pre-calibrated zenith radiance measurements taken from the ARM Sun-Photometer (SPHOT) and the NASA AERONET and Satellite-based surface albedo derived from MODSI. Finally, the algorithm produces uncertainties along with the retrieval products. This VAP outputs a daily NetCDF file.

EPCAPE-PT-LANL Measurements: Humidified Cavity Attenuated Phase Shift Spectroscopy

Coastal cities offer a unique environment for studying aerosol-cloud interactions and the effects of urban emissions on cloud properties. As part of the Eastern Pacific Cloud Aerosol Precipitation Experiment (EPCAPE), the Partitioning Thrust by Los Alamos National Laboratory (EPCAPE-PT-LANL) was conducted. Our campaign focused on measuring the optical and chemical properties of aerosols and their interactions within marine stratocumulus clouds in La Jolla, California. EPCAPE-PT-LANL enhances the primary goals of EPCAPE through innovative observations of vapor-phase transitions between aerosols and cloud droplets, the impact of black carbon on aerosol-cloud dynamics, and the effects of cloud processing on aerosol optical properties. Understanding Bifacial PV Modeling: Raytracing and View Factor Models

As part of the PV Magazine Webinar 'View-factor vs. ray tracing - which bifacial modelling techniques should you use?,' the second part lead by NREL will explore the different rear-irradiance calculation software, which fall into two categories: view-factor and ray-tracing models. View factor models assume isotropic scattering of reflected rays, allowing for calculation of irradiance by integration. Due-diligence software such as PVSyst or SAM use the view-factor model. Ray-tracing models simulate multipath reflection and absorption of individual rays entering a scene. Raytracing software such as bifacial_radiance, which is the only available open-source toolkit, offers the possibility of reproducing complex scenes, including shading or finite-system edge effects. This can be useful to evaluate specific system geometries, shading and obstructions, areas of different albedo and electrical mismatch, all topics of interest to the prediction of bifacial performance. Model agreement for view factors and bifacial_radiance software is improving and has been shown to be between 2% (absolute) when compared with measured results.
