Bayesian automated weighting of aggregated DFT, MD, and experimental data for candidate thermodynamic models of aluminum with uncertainty quantification

Atomic-scale modeling methods such as density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) can predict the thermodynamic properties of materials at a lower cost than experimental measurements. However, their regular usage in thermodynamic model construction is hampered by the lack of quantitative agreement with experimental measurements and the lack of uncertainty estimates on the data. To make regular usage of this atomistic simulation data, it is important to assess whether the atomistic simulation datasets, by themselves or in combination with experimental measurements, result in the same physics-informed models best supported by experimental measurements alone. Here, models of aluminum thermodynamic properties are discussed using three data sources: atomistic calculations (DFT and MD), experiments, and a combination of atomistic calculations and experiments. The study shows that, after ensuring self-consistency in predicting key invariant points, both experimental measurements and atomistic calculations can significantly contribute to an optimal model.

Aggregate residential demand flexibility behavior: A novel assessment framework

Residential demand flexibility (DF) could save the U.S. electric grid up to 10 GW of peak demand while supporting increased amounts of renewable generation. However, less than 40% of the estimated DF peak reduction capacity is currently realized, and less than 8% of American households are enrolled. These low participation rates are combined with high rates of "overriding" a DF event and eventual opt-outs among enrolled customers. There is still not a comprehensive understanding of the drivers of DF participation and occupant interaction with DF program signals. We, therefore, present a novel survey processing framework to assess occupant DF-relevant behavior from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS). Using the framework, we summarize both the extensive and intensive behavior of more than 200,000 ATUS respondents (2003-2018 data) and provide insights on the DF-relevant behavior of residential occupants, which is generally overlooked in the literature. Here we use the framework to identify the activity priorities of residential occupants in the United States during different DF-relevant periods (critical peak, peak, and off-peak). These preferred activities capture overlooked routine behaviors that could be barriers to DF participation, if ignored, and might explain the high levels of overrides often exhibited by participants of demand response.

Soft Nanoconfinement Nucleates and Stabilizes Ultrasmall Amorphous Calcium Carbonate from Aggregation

Organisms use soft confinement structures, such as vesicles and compartments, to direct the nucleation of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and its subsequent processes during biomineralization. Despite recent efforts elucidating confinement’s effects on CaCO 3 polymorph selection, we still poorly understand how the size and distribution of CaCO 3 are controlled within soft confinement. Here, using a size-controlled nanoemulsions system made from isooctane, Span 80, Tween 80, and aqueous solutions, we studied CaCO 3 formation in soft confinement. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) confirmed that a 72 nm aqueous core in nanoemulsions served as the confined space for CaCO 3 formation. Unlike the ~ 50 nm CaCO 3 particles that formed in the unconfined solution, small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed that ultrasmall and amorphous calcium carbonate precipitated within soft confinement and did not exhibit any aggregation/coalescence of nanoparticles even after 24 hrs of reaction.
