I Know I'm Right, But Does My Phone?

Transportation is the largest source of green-house gas emissions in the United States. Reducing transportation emissions depends on human travel behavior, which relies on local land use and planning. Travel diaries, consisting of sequences of trips between places for a particular individual, are typically used to instrument human travel behavior. However, these diaries are only as accurate as the underlying methods used to construct them. Travel diary algorithms have been a popular research topic since the advent of GPS tracking surveys. Mode inference algorithms in particular have been well represented in literature. However, these algorithms have typically been validated using prompted recall of pre-segmented trips, which doesn't account for segmentation error, thus disregarding the continuity of mode inference. Furthermore, phone operating systems and applications have adopted battery-conserving techniques, but we are not aware of prior work that has characterized the resulting data collection errors or evaluated procedures to mitigate them. We introduce a framework to evaluate accuracy of trip length computations and mode inference. We develop a temporal alignment procedure in analyzing continuous mode-segmented trajectories for groups of trips. We then apply our framework to evaluate an example set of travel diary algorithms from the open-source OpenPATH travel diary platform against MobilityNet, a public dataset containing information from three artificial timelines that cover 15 different travel modes. Our results show that inference based on an integration with map features results in weighted F_1 scores of 0.60 (iOS) and 0.74 (android). We also show that OpenPATH tends to under count trip length, with mean of signed relative error of -0.0438 on android and -0.0704 on iOS. We hope that other travel diary algorithms will be evaluated using this standardized process, and that the results used to understand and improve the state-of-the-art in this field.

Label Assist: Personalized Travel Models for Longitudinal Data Collection

Understanding travel behavior is crucial to transportation decarbonization. OpenPATH is an open-source mobility platform which collects and analyzes human travel behavior at the individual level. The mobile application passively senses trips and prompts users to label them. However, users find the labeling process burdensome; less than half the trips are typically labeled, making much of the data unusable in aggregate analyses of mobility patterns. Prior work has addressed the response fatigue challenge through automated mode inference using sensor data, but sensors cannot capture all aspects of travel behavior. We explore an alternative approach in which we leverage prior user input to predict travel choices in novel trips. We first explore trip clustering methods and develop a novel two-step pipeline using DBSCAN and SVMs to extract realistic geospatial clusters. We then propose two strategies to predict trip labels: (i) clustering trips and extrapolating labels for similar trips, and (ii) random forest classification. The random forest approach is able to achieve - $70-80% accuracy (purpose: 72%, mode: 79%, replaced mode: 81%). These novel approaches to trip classification allow us to increase the rate of user labeling by suggesting predicted labels to be verified by the user. Unlabeled trips can also contribute to aggregate analyses, using label predictions and their associated confidences as a substitute. While there exist other travel survey apps with the ability to infer travel choices, to our knowledge, this is the first paper to describe such a supervised system and rigorously evaluate it.

Connecting Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure to Commercial Buildings

Electric vehicles (EVs) are growing in popularity and gaining meaningful market share with record sales year over year in the last decade. EV charging equipment, also known as EV chargers (EVC) or EV supply equipment (EVSE), must proportionally match the growing number of new EVs on the road for a comparable experience to gas-powered vehicles. The majority of EV charging currently happens at residential buildings. However, demand for EV charging at commercial buildings will significantly increase with wider mainstream EV adoption and as businesses return to more normal operation following COVID-19 pandemic disruptions. Charging equipment can include various sub-systems like power conditioning module, control software, safety devices, metering, communication, cooling, connectors, and its wiring. EV charging at commercial buildings could be used for public, workplace, and commercial fleet charging. This document aims to describe how EVC can be connected to commercial buildings, including considerations for facility managers, and the effects that charging will have on the buildings electrical distribution system. More specifically, this resource provides an overview of: understanding EV charging basics: how charging equipment connects to the building and to EVs; required infrastructure updates needed at the building site to connect EVC to existing distribution systems; network strategies for cost-effective operation; metering and utility considerations for billing and incentives; charging equipment ownership options; future trends in EVC connection to buildings.

Progress Update from the EV Charging Working Group (#982)

The EV charging working group (#982) was formed in summer 2022 to define the equip, points, relationships, and operational data related to Level 1-2 (AC) and Level 3 (DC) Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). Last year, the working group developed formal EVSE-related equipment definitions, where were merged into the Project Haystack documentation in November 2022. More recently the group has also been working to expand and improve Haystack definitions related to electrical equipment and circuits. This initiative is important both for EV charging related applications and to improve Project Haystack's appeal to other industry verticals such as data centers, commercial building electrification, and more. In this presentation we will share the working group's motivation, progress, and near-term objectives.

MC Formula Protocol for H35HF Fueling

A publicly available and verified high-flow fueling protocol for H35 medium-duty (MD) and heavy-duty (HD) hydrogen-powered buses and trucks does not exist. This could lead to transit agencies needing to select suppliers for purchase of new fleet vehicles, and to multiple providers responding with incompatible vehicle designs in the future. With the expansion of MD/HD vehicles using 35 MPa storage, there will be a need for publicly accessible H35HF stations, and these will require the use of a standardized prescriptive fueling protocol. The development of a fully tested and validated H35 high-flow (H35HF) MC Formula fueling protocol for MD and HD buses and trucks can provide guidelines to design H35 stations and vehicles, enable other manufacturers and vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to enter this space, and ultimately accelerate to popularize the hydrogen market.

Electric Vehicle Managed Charging: Estimating the Potential Bulk Power System Value

With more and more electric vehicles (EVs) on the road, the grid of the future can greatly benefit from EV managed charging, which coordinates charging based on people's travel needs, electricity supply, and grid conditions. The added flexibility could be especially valuable for the bulk power system as it transitions to high shares of variable renewable generation, like wind and solar. Numerous studies have estimated the potential value of EV managed charging. In this study, NREL leveraged more detailed modeling of EV adoption, use, charging, and bulk power system operations to understand the potential value. Unique to this study, NREL modeled different charging flexibility types and dispatch mechanisms - as well as participation rates among drivers in having their EV charging managed - starting from vehicle-specific descriptions of charging flexibility. The study is based on a passenger light-duty vehicle adoption scenario with 100% EV sales by 2035 and a New England power system in 2038 with 84% clean generation and 26% of the electric load met by net imports. The 2038 New England light-duty vehicle feet is modeled as 45% electric.

Understanding Mobility Behavior Using OpenPATH

In this presentation, we present the motivation behind the creation of NRELOpenPATH, what data the tool can collect, how the app works, and how interested parties can set up a deployment for their own project. OpenPATH is unique in it's ability to engage users in longitudinal travel diary collection with a smartphone app. The app allows projects to examine the modes of users travel, as well as the purpose of that travel. Many deployments have examined the way users travel by e-bike, and the app supports data collection across all modes to gain a holistic view of mobility behavior. The app is configurable for each deployment, and we will describe the way in which NREL hosts project deployments of our open-source project. As this presentation is a part of a panel, time for questions will be included.

Design, Optimization, and Validation of GaN-Based DAB Converter for Active Cell Balancing in BTMS Applications: Preprint

This paper focuses on the design of a bidirectional dual active bridge (DAB) DC/DC converter that utilizes Gallium Nitride (GaN) switches as active components. In the existing literature, MOSFET-based DAB for active cell balancing is available, but GaN-based DAB converter for active cell balancing is still new. The proposed modular isolated GaN-based DAB converter is designed as an individual module of active cell balancing for behind-the-meter storage (BTMS) applications, targeting high-power charging stations. Modular isolated converters are connected to each cell (low voltage bus), and each cell is connected in series to build up a battery module. According to the reference current command of supervisory control, each DAB converter can transfer power back and forth through the high voltage (HV) bus to balance the State of Charge (SoC) between the cells. Each module DAB converter is designed at a 50W power rating. Switch power and transformer losses are analyzed for different switching frequencies, showing the optimum switching frequency for minimum losses. Furthermore, the procedure to select the required gate driver and the PCB layout optimization are discussed. Finally, the DAB performance analysis of GaNbased DAB and Si-based DAB is provided for a battery module operating with a LiFeMnPO4 prismatic cell with 3.2V 20Ah rated values.
