Sensitive searches for wormholes

A sensitive test for whether a black hole is a wormhole, using astronomical observations, would be to look for perturbations in the orbit of a pulsar around the black hole, caused by a perturbing object on the other side of the wormhole. By observing a pulsar in an orbit like that of S2 around the supermassive black hole at Sgr A* at the center of our Galaxy, the attainable mass limit on the perturber would be approximately 10 4 times better than derived from current observations of S2. For a nominal stellar-mass black hole–pulsar binary, observing for 1 year could set a mass limit on a perturber more than 6 orders of magnitude better than for a pulsar orbiting Sgr A*. Observations of a star in a stellar-mass binary containing a black hole could set limits similar to the case of a pulsar orbiting Sgr A*.

Sixfold Way of Traversable Wormholes in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

In the infrared limit, a nearly anti–de Sitter spacetime in two dimensions ( AdS 2 ) perturbed by a weak double trace deformation and a two-site ( q > 2 )-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with N Majoranas and a weak 2 r -body intersite coupling share the same near-conformal dynamics described by a traversable wormhole. We exploit this relation to propose a symmetry classification of traversable wormholes depending on N , q , and r , with q > 2 r , and confirm it by a level statistics analysis using exact diagonalization techniques. Intriguingly, a time-reversed state never results in a new state, so only six universality classes occur—A, AI, BDI, CI, C, and D—and different symmetry sectors of the model may belong to distinct universality classes. Measurement-induced phase transition in teleportation and wormholes

We demonstrate that some quantum teleportation protocols exhibit measurement induced phase transitions in Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. Namely, Kitaev-Yoshida and Gao-Jafferis-Wall protocols have a phase transition if we apply them at a large projection rate or at a large coupling rate respectively. It is well-known that at small rates they allow teleportation to happen only within a small time-window. We show that at large rates, the system goes into a new steady state, where the teleportation can be performed at any moment. In dual Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity these phase transitions correspond to the formation of an eternal traversable wormhole. In the Kitaev-Yoshida case this novel type of wormhole is supported by continuous projections.

Wormholes and negative energy from the gravitationally squeezed vacuum

Minkowski-signature wormhole solutions of the Einstein field equations require the existence of negative energy density in the vicinity of their throats. We point out that the gravitational interaction automatically generates squeezed vacuum states of matter, which by their nature, entail negative energy and, thus, provide a natural source for maintaining this class of wormholes.

Quantum wormholes and harmonic oscillators

The quantum state of a wormhole can be represented by a path integral over all asymptotically Euclidean four-geometries and all matter fields which have prescribed values, the arguments of the wave function, on a three-surface which divides the space time manifold into two disconnected parts. Minisuperspace models which consist of a homogeneous massless scalar field coupled to a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space time are considered. Once the path integral over the lapse function is performed, the requirement that the space time be asymptotically Euclidean can be accomplished by fixing the asymptotic gravitational momentum in the remaining path integral. It is argued that there does not exist any wave function which corresponds to asymptotic field configurations such that the effective gravitational constant is negative in the asymptotic region. Then, the wormhole wave functions can be written as linear combinations of harmonic oscillator wave functions.

Wormhole: A Powerful Data Mashup

The mobile platform is quickly becoming the standard way that users interact with online resources. The iOS operating system allows iPhone and iPad users to seamlessly access highly interactive web applications that until recently were only available via a desktop or laptop. Wormhole is an AJAX application implemented as a smart web widget that allows users to easily supplement web pages with data directly from the Instrument Operations Subsystems division (IOS) at JPL. It creates an interactive mashup using a website's core content enhanced by dynamically retrieved image and metadata supplied by IOS using the webification API. Currently, this technology is limited in scope to NASA data; however, it can easily be augmented to serve many other needs. This web widget can be delivered in various ways, including as a bookmarklet. The underlying technology that powers Wormhole also has applications to other divisions while they are running current missions.

Estimating global charge violating amplitudes from wormholes

We consider the scattering of high energy and ultra relativistic spherically symmetric shells in asymptotically AdS D spacetimes. We analyze an exclusive amplitude where a single spherically symmetric shell goes in and a single one comes out, such that the two have different global symmetry charges of the effective gravity theory. We study a simple wormhole configuration that computes the square of the amplitude and analyze its properties.

Wormholes with ends of the world

We study classical wormhole solutions in 3D gravity with end-of-the-world (EOW) branes, conical defects, kinks, and punctures. These solutions compute statistical averages of an ensemble of boundary conformal field theories (BCFTs) related to universal asymptotics of OPE data extracted from the 2D conformal bootstrap. Conical defects connect BCFT bulk operators; branes join BCFT boundary intervals with identical boundary conditions; kinks (1D defects along branes) link BCFT boundary operators; and punctures (0D defects) are endpoints where conical defects terminate on branes. We provide evidence for a correspondence between the gravity theory and the ensemble. In particular, the agreement of the g-function dependence results from an underlying topological aspect of the on-shell EOW brane action, from which a BCFT analog of the Schlenker-Witten theorem also follows.

Replica wormholes and capacity of entanglement

We consider the capacity of entanglement as a probe of the Hawking radiation in a two-dimensional dilaton gravity coupled with conformal matter of large degrees of freedom. A formula calculating the capacity is derived using the gravitational path integral, from which we speculate that the capacity has a discontinuity at the Page time in contrast to the continuous behavior of the generalized entropy. We apply the formula to a replica wormhole solution in an eternal AdS black hole coupled to a flat non-gravitating bath and show that the capacity of entanglement is saturated by the thermal capacity of the black hole in the high temperature limit.

One dimensional wormhole corrosion in metals

Corrosion is a ubiquitous failure mode of materials. Often, the progression of localized corrosion is accompanied by the evolution of porosity in materials previously reported to be either three-dimensional or two-dimensional. However, using new tools and analysis techniques, we have realized that a more localized form of corrosion, which we call 1D wormhole corrosion, has previously been miscategorized in some situations. Using electron tomography, we show multiple examples of this 1D and percolating morphology. To understand the origin of this mechanism in a Ni-Cr alloy corroded by molten salt, we combined energy-filtered four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy and ab initio density functional theory calculations to develop a vacancy mapping method with nanometer-resolution, identifying a remarkably high vacancy concentration in the diffusion-induced grain boundary migration zone, up to 100 times the equilibrium value at the melting point. Deciphering the origins of 1D corrosion is an important step towards designing structural materials with enhanced corrosion resistance.

A violation of global symmetries from replica wormholes and the fate of black hole remnants

We show that the presence of replica wormholes in the Euclidean path integral of gravity leads to a non-perturbative violation of charge conservation for any global symmetry present in the low-energy description of quantum gravity. Explicitly, we compute the scattering probability between different charged states in several two-dimensional models of quantum gravity and find a non-vanishing answer. Here, this suggests that the set of all charged states is typically over-complete, which has drastic consequences for the fate of black hole remnants that could carry a global symmetry charge. In the holographic context, we argue that the presence of such a symmetry in the effective description of the bulk should appear on the boundary as an emergent global symmetry after ensemble averaging.

Toward a classification of PT-symmetric quantum systems: From dissipative dynamics to topology and wormholes

Studies of many-body non-Hermitian parity-time (PT)-symmetric quantum systems are attracting a lot of interest due to their relevance in research areas ranging from quantum optics and continuously monitored dynamics to Euclidean wormholes in quantum gravity and dissipative quantum chaos. While a symmetry classification of non-Hermitian systems leads to 38 universality classes, we show that, under certain conditions, PT-symmetric systems are grouped into 24 universality classes. We identify 14 of them in a coupled two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and confirm the classification by spectral analysis using exact diagonalization techniques. Intriguingly, in 4 of these 14 universality classes, AIII ν , BDI ν † , BDI + + ν , and CI − − ν , we identify a basis in which the SYK Hamiltonian has a block structure in which some blocks are rectangular, with ν ∈ N the difference between the number of rows and columns. We show analytically that this feature leads to the existence of ν robust purely eigenvalues, whose level statistics follow the predictions of Hermitian random matrix theory for classes A, AI, BDI, and CI, respectively. We have recently found that this ν is a topological invariant, so these classes are topological. By contrast, nontopological real eigenvalues display a crossover between Hermitian and non-Hermitian level statistics. Similarly to the case of Lindbladian dynamics, the reduction of universality classes leads to unexpected results, such as the absence of Kramers degeneracy in a given sector of the theory. Another novel feature of the classification scheme is that different sectors of the PT-symmetric Hamiltonian may have different symmetries. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

3d gravity from Virasoro TQFT: Holography, wormholes and knots

We further develop the description of three-dimensional quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant in terms of Virasoro TQFT formulated in our previous paper [SciPost Phys. 15, 151 (2023)]. We compare the partition functions computed in the Virasoro TQFT formalism to the semiclassical evaluation of Euclidean gravity partition functions. This matching is highly non-trivial, but can be checked directly in some examples. We then showcase the formalism in action, by computing the gravity partition functions of many relevant topologies. For holographic applications, we focus on the partition functions of Euclidean multi-boundary wormholes with three-punctured spheres as boundaries. This precisely quantifies the higher moments of the structure constants in the proposed ensemble boundary dual and subjects the proposal to thorough checks. Finally, we investigate in detail the example of the figure eight knot complement as a hyperbolic 3-manifold. We show that the Virasoro TQFT partition function is identical to the partition function computed in Teichmüller theory, thus giving strong evidence for the equivalence of these TQFTs. We also show how to produce a large class of manifolds via Dehn surgery on the figure eight knot.

Approximate Quantum Codes From Long Wormholes

We discuss families of approximate quantum error correcting codes which arise as the nearly-degenerate ground states of certain quantum many-body Hamiltonians composed of non-commuting terms. For exact codes, the conditions for error correction can be formulated in terms of the vanishing of a two-sided mutual information in a low-temperature thermofield double state. We consider a notion of distance for approximate codes obtained by demanding that this mutual information instead be small, and we evaluate this mutual information for the SYK model and for a family of low-rank SYK models. After an extrapolation to nearly zero temperature, we find that both kinds of models produce fermionic codes with constant rate as the number, N , of fermions goes to infinity. For SYK, the distance scales as N 1 / 2 , and for low-rank SYK, the distance can be arbitrarily close to linear scaling, e.g. N .99 , while maintaining a constant rate. We also consider an analog of the no low-energy trivial states property which we dub the no low-energy adiabatically accessible states property and show that these models do have low-energy states that can be prepared adiabatically in a time that does not scale with system size N . We discuss a holographic model of these codes in which the large code distance is a consequence of the emergence of a long wormhole geometry in a simple model of quantum gravity.

Conformal scalar field wormholes

The Euclidian Einstein equations with a cosmological constant and a conformally coupled scalar field are solved, taking the metric to be of the Robertson-Walker type. In the case Lambda = 0, solutions are found which represent a wormhole connecting two asymptotically flat Euclidian regions. In the case Lambda greater than 0, the solutions represent tunneling from a small Tolman-like universe to a large Robertson-Walker universe.

The lion, the witch, and the wormhole: ensemble averaging the symmetric product orbifold

Abstract We consider the ensemble average of two dimensional symmetric product orbifold CFTs Sym N (𝕋 D ) over the Narain moduli space. We argue for a bulk dual given byNcopies of an abelian Chern-Simons theory coupled to topological gravity, endowed with a discrete gauge symmetry exchanging theNcopies. As a check of this proposal, we calculate the ensemble average of various partition and correlation functions of the symmetric product orbifold theory and compare the resulting expressions to gauge theory quantities in the bulk. We comment on the ensemble average of the tensionless string partition function on AdS 3 × S 3 × 𝕋 4 by considering the specific case ofD= 4 with the addition of supersymmetry.
