Filamentation instability of magnetosonic waves in the solar wind environment

Intense magnetosonic waves, originally propagating at the right angle with the interplanetary magnetic field, can excite a purely growing mode along the interplanetary magnetic field together with two symmetric magnetosonic sidebands propagating obliquely across the magnetic field. This instability process leads to the filamentation of the magnetosonic pump waves. These two excited magnetosonic sideband modes propagate together perpendicularly across the magnetic field and, meanwhile, form a standing wave pattern along the magnetic field. The thresholds of this filamentation instability can be exceeded in the solar wind environment. It is predicted that the density fluctuations produced by the filamentation instability along the interplanetary magnetic field have wavelengths greater than, at least, a few earth radii. The polarization of the obliquely propagating magnetosonic waves excited by the filamentation instability is determined by the characteristics of the magnetosonic pump waves and the environmental plasmas.

Parametric instabilities of circularly polarized Alfven waves in high-beta plasmas

CGL relations including the effect of finite ion Larmor radius are used to consider a class of parametric instabilities of finite-amplitude, circularly polarized Alfven waves in high-beta plasmas. The disperison relation governing the instabilities is a sixth-order polynomial which is solved numerically. There are two types of instabilities: a modulational instability at k is less than k(0) and a relatively weak and narrow bandwidth instability at k is less than approximately k(0), where k and k(0) are the wavenumbers of the unstable density fluctuation and the 'pump' wave, respectively. It is shown that these instabilities can occur for left-handed pump waves and that the modulational instability is unstable over a very broad band in k with a maximum growth rate at finite k is not equal to 0.

Analysis of the backscatter spectrum in an ionospheric modification experiment

Predictions of the backscatter spectrum are compared, including effects of ionospheric inhomogeneity with experimental observations of incoherent backscatter from an artificially heated region. Calculations show that the strongest backscatter echo received is not, in fact, from the reflection level, but from a region some distance below (about 0.5 km for an experiment carried out at Arecibo), where the pump wave from a HF transmitter approximately 100 kW) is below the threshold for parametric amplification. By taking the standing wave pattern of the pump into account, asymmetry is explained of the up-shifted and down-shifted plasma lines in the backscatter spectrum, and the several peaks typically observed in the region of the spectrum near the HF transmitter frequency.

Pressure effects on the frequency of continuous-wave optically pumped far-infrared lasers

The frequency of the 170.6-micron CW CH3OH optically pumped laser emission has been remeasured at different pressures without observing the pressure shift observed by Lawandy and Koepf (1980). The far-infrared frequency was synthesized with two stabilized CO2 lasers. No measurable pressure shift over the operating pressure range of the laser was observed, and the frequency was confirmed to be 1 757 526.3 MHz. However, competing lasing lines were found to produce spurious effects on the frequency. These effects may explain the apparent shifts.

Parametric interactions between Alfven waves and sonic waves

Parametric interactions between a sonic pump wave and a weak Alfven wave are studied. It is shown that if the Alfven-wave velocity Va is small relative to the sonic-wave velocity Vs there is a time-growing instability leading to the increase of the Alfven wave at the expense of the sonic wave. This phenomenon can be of importance in solar and stellar physics. For Va large relative to Vs, the interaction is of the stop-band type.

Magnetic pumping by magnetosonic waves in the presence of noncompressive electromagnetic fluctuations

Numerical simulations of the damping of magnetosonic waves via magnetic pumping in the presence of electromagnetic fluctuations that can pitch-angle scatter the plasma particles are presented. From the first simulation it is found that the magnetosonic-wave energy is transferred to high-energy particles. In the second type of simulation, magnetosonic waves produce a hot surface layer on the plasma that is ablated by the wave energy. Solution of a Fokker-Planck equation for the magnetic-pumping process is found to adequately represent magnetic pumping by small-amplitude magnetosonic waves.

A comparison between theory and experiments on non-linear three-wave interactions in plasmas

Quantitative comparisons between theory and experiments on non-linear three-wave interactions in a nearly homogeneous plasma are presented in this paper. First, the theoretical spatial behaviour of signal and idler waves excited by a large amplitude pump wave is predicted, with damping of all waves included. These results are then specialized to allow detailed quantitative comparisons to be made with available experimental data on parametrically excited ion-acoustic waves. Where good agreement is obtained, the comparison indicates further measurements required to verify more completely the basic theory of three-wave interactions in plasmas. Where wide disagreement is obtained, the comparison indicates possible directions in which the theory might be improved.

Preferential Heating of Oxygen 5+ Ions by Finite-Amplitude Oblique Alfven Waves

Minor ions in the fast solar wind are known to have higher temperatures and to flow faster than protons in the interplanetary space. In this study we combine previous research on parametric instability theory and 2.5D hybrid simulations to study the onset of preferential heating of Oxygen 5+ ions by large-scale finite-amplitude Alfven waves in the collisionless fast solar wind. We consider initially non-drifting isotropic multi-species plasma, consisting of isothermal massless fluid electrons, kinetic protons and kinetic Oxygen 5+ ions. The external energy source for the plasma heating and energization are oblique monochromatic Alfven-cyclotron waves. The waves have been created by rotating the direction of initial parallel pump, which is a solution of the multi-fluid plasma dispersion relation. We consider propagation angles theta less than or equal to 30 deg. The obliquely propagating Alfven pump waves lead to strong diffusion in the ion phase space, resulting in highly anisotropic heavy ion velocity distribution functions and proton beams. We discuss the application of the model to the problems of preferential heating of minor ions in the solar corona and the fast solar wind.

Chaotic /strange/ and periodic behavior in instability saturation by the oscillating two-stream instability

The nonlinear Schroedinger equation with linear growth and damping is truncated to three waves. The resulting system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations describes the excitation of linearly damped waves by the oscillating two-stream instability driven by a linearly unstable pump wave. This system represents a simple model for the nonlinear saturation of a linearly unstable wave. The model is examined analytically and numerically as a function of the dimensionless parameters of the system. It is found that the model can exhibit a wealth of characteristic dynamical behavior including stationary equilibria, Hopf bifurcations to periodic orbits, period doubling bifurcations, chaotic solutions characteristic of a strange attractor, tangent bifurcations from chaotic to periodic solutions, transient chaos, and hysteresis. Many of these features are shown to be explainable on the basis of one-dimensional maps. In the case of chaotic solutions, evidence for the presence of a strange attractor is provided by demonstrating Cantor set-like structure (i.e., scale invariance) in the surface of section.

Parametric instabilities of large amplitude Alfven waves with obliquely propagating sidebands

This paper presents a brief report on properties of the parametric decay and modulational, filamentation, and magnetoacoustic instabilities of a large amplitude, circularly polarized Alfven wave. We allow the daughter and sideband waves to propagate at an arbitrary angle to the background magnetic field so that the electrostatic and electromagnetic characteristics of these waves are coupled. We investigate the dependance of these instabilities on dispersion, plasma/beta, pump wave amplitude, and propagation angle. Analytical and numerical results are compared with numerical simulations to investigate the full nonlinear evolution of these instabilities.

Multiwave Interactions in Turbulent Jets

Nonlinear wave-wave interactions in turbulent jets were investigated based on the integrated energy of each scale of motion in a cross section of the jet. The analysis indicates that two frequency components in the axisymmetric mode can interact with other background frequencies in the axisymmetric mode, thereby amplifying an enormous number of other frequencies. Two frequency components in a single helical mode cannot, by themselves, amplify other frequency components. But combinations of frequency components of helical and axisymmetric modes can amplify other frequencies in other helical modes. The present computations produce several features consistent with experimental observations such as: (1) dependency of the interactions on the initial phase differences, (2) enhancement of the momentum thickness under multifrequency forcing, and (3) the increase in background turbulence under forcing. In a multifrequency-excited jet, mixing enhancement was found to be a result of the turbulence enhancement rather than simply the amplification of forced wave components. The excitation waves pump energy from the mean flow to the turbulence, thus enhancing the latter. The high frequency waves enhance the turbulence close to the jet exit, but, the low frequency waves are most effective further downstream.

Generation of large scale field-aligned density irregularities in ionospheric heating experiments

Threshold and growth rate for stimulated Brillouin scattering are calculated for a uniform magnetoplasma. These are then compared with the threshold and growth rate of a new thermal instability in which the nonlinear Lorentz force felt by the electrons at the beat frequency of the two electromagnetic waves is replaced by a pressure force due to differential heating in the interference pattern of the pump wave and the generated electromagnetic wave. This thermal instability, which is still essentially stimulated Brillouin scattering, has a threshold which is especially low when the propagation vector of the beat wave is almost normal to the magnetic field. The threshold is then considerably lower than the threshold for normal stimulated Brillouin scattering and therefore this new instability is probably responsible for the generation of large scale field aligned irregularities and ionospheric spread F.

Turbulence enhancement in free shear flows under multifrequency excitation

The interactions of multifrequency wave-packet with the background turbulence in a round jet are studied. The process explains the mechanisms governing the later stages of the laminar-turbulent transitions as well as the effect of multifrequency excitation on turbulent jets. In a multifrequency-excited jet, mixing enhancement was found to be a result of the turbulence enhancement rather than simply the amplification of forced wave components. The excitation waves pump energy from the mean flow to the turbulence, thus enhancing the latter. The high-frequency wave enhance the turbulence close to the jet exit, but the low-frequency waves are most effective further downstream.

Nonlinear evolution of a large-amplitude circularly polarized Alfven wave: High beta

The nonlinear dynamics following saturation of the parametric instabilities of a monochromatic field-aligned large-amplitude circularly polarized Alfven wave is investigated via direct numerical simulation in the case of high plasma beta and no wave dispersion. The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code permits nonlinear couplings in the parallel direction to the ambient magnetic field and one perpendicular direction. Compressibility is included in the form of a polytropic equation of state. Turbulent cascades develop after saturation of two coupled oblique three-wave parametric instabilities; one of which is an oblique filamentationlike instability reported earlier. Remnants of the parametric processes, as well as of the original Alfven pump wave, persist during late nonlinear times. Nearly incompressible MHD features such as spectral anisotropies appear as well.

Optically pumped submillimeter-waves and applications

Rapid development of optically pumped lasers has shown the potential to be used as a source for a high resolution spectrometer. In this connection, a compact, stable FIR laser was designed, fabricated, and assembled, integrating both the pump laser and the FIR cavity in the same mechanical structure for its improved (both thermal and mechanical) stability and mobility. Performance of the mixer structure which was designed and constructed for the evaluation of the Schottky diodes was found to be satisfactory. The feasibility of generating tunable sideband for molecular spectroscopy studies was demonstrated.
