Internal voltage control of hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells: Feasibility study

An experimental study was conducted to assess the feasibility of internal voltage regulation of fuel cell systems. Two methods were tested. In one, reactant partial pressure was used as the voltage control parameter and in the other reactant total pressure was used for control. Both techniques were breadboarded and tested on a single alkaline-electrolyte fuel cell. Both methods were found to be possible forms of regulation, however, of the two the total pressure technique would be more efficient, simpler to apply and would provide better transient characteristics.

Effects of voltage control in utility interactive dispersed storage and generation systems

When a small generator is connected to the distribution system, the voltage at the point of interconnection is determined largely by the system and not the generator. The effect on the generator, on the load voltage and on the distribution system of a number of different voltage control strategies in the generator is examined. Synchronous generators with three kinds of exciter control are considered, as well as induction generators and dc/ac inverters, with and without capacitor compensation. The effect of varying input power during operation (which may be experienced by generators based on renewable resources) is explored, as well as the effect of connecting and disconnecting the generator at ten percent of its rated power. Operation with a constant slightly lagging factor is shown to have some advantages.

Lateral tunneling through voltage-controlled barriers

The paper reports on a detailed experimental investigation of lateral tunneling between electrodes of a two-dimensional electron gas separated by the voltage-controlled barrier of a nanometer Schottky gate. The experimental data are modeled using the WKB method to calculate the tunneling probability of electrons through a barrier whose shape is determined from a solution of the two-dimensional Poisson equation. This model is in excellent agreement with the experimental data over a two order of magnitude range of current.

Modelling a single phase voltage controlled rectifier using Laplace transforms

The development of a 20 kHz, AC power system by NASA for large space projects has spurred a need to develop models for the equipment which will be used on these single phase systems. To date, models for the AC source (i.e., inverters) have been developed. It is the intent of this paper to develop a method to model the single phase voltage controlled rectifiers which will be attached to the AC power grid as an interface for connected loads. A modified version of EPRI's HARMFLO program is used as the shell for these models. The results obtained from the model developed in this paper are quite adequate for the analysis of problems such as voltage resonance. The unique technique presented in this paper uses the Laplace transforms to determine the harmonic content of the load current of the rectifier rather than a curve fitting technique. Laplace transforms yield the coefficient of the differential equations which model the line current to the rectifier directly.

Evaluation of a Programmable Voltage-Controlled MEMS Oscillator, Type SiT3701, Over a Wide Temperature Range

Semiconductor chips based on MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology, such as sensors, transducers, and actuators, are becoming widely used in today s electronics due to their high performance, low power consumption, tolerance to shock and vibration, and immunity to electro-static discharge. In addition, the MEMS fabrication process allows for the miniaturization of individual chips as well as the integration of various electronic circuits into one module, such as system-on-a-chip. These measures would simplify overall system design, reduce parts count and interface, improve reliability, and reduce cost; and they would meet requirements of systems destined for use in space exploration missions. In this work, the performance of a recently-developed MEMS voltage-controlled oscillator was evaluated under a wide temperature range. Operation of this new commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) device was also assessed under thermal cycling to address some operational conditions of the space environment

Voltage-Controlled Differential Faraday Rotation from FMNWs and Magnetoelastic Silicone-Nickel Composites

Differential Faraday rotation has been observed from strain-Differential Faraday rotation has been observed from strain-modulated magnetoelastic membranes using millimeter-wave polarimetry at 61.25 GHz. The membranes, consisting of aligned chains of nickel micro-particles embedded in silicone rubber, were manufactured using a roll-to-roll electromagnetic processing line, mounted onto piezoelectric ceramic annuli, and immersed in externally-generated static magnetic fields. Experiments were conducted in which the membranes were periodically stretched by operating the piezoelectric crystals close to their radial resonant frequencies—thereby modulating nickel particle density as well as magnetic material properties. A customized quasi-optical apparatus was used to determine the Faraday-rotation difference between the strained and unstrained states of the magnetoelastic membranes. Possible applications that could emerge from this polymer-based technology include nonreciprocal millimeter-wave components with voltage-controlled frequency response and bio-inspired geomagnetic sensors for GPS-denied navigation. Investigations were conducted to estimate the maximum attainable differential Faraday rotation and the minimum detectable static magnetic field.

Voltage controlling mechanisms in low resistivity silicon solar cells: A unified approach

An experimental technique capable of resolving the dark saturation current into its base and emitter components is used as the basis of an analysis in which the voltage limiting mechanisms were determined for a variety of high voltage, low resistivity silicon solar cells. The cells studied include the University of Florida hi-low emitter cell, the NASA and the COMSAT multi-step diffused cells, the Spire Corporation ion-implanted emitter cell, and the University of New South Wales MINMIS and MINP cells. The results proved to be, in general, at variance with prior expectations. Most surprising was the finding that the MINP and the MINMIS voltage improvements are due, to a considerable extent, to a previously unrecognized optimization of the base component of the saturation current. This result is substantiated by an independent analysis of the material used to fabricate these devices.
