Entanglement enabled intensity interferometry in ultrarelativistic ultraperipheral nuclear collisions

An important tool in studying the subfemtoscale spacetime structure of matter in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is Hanbury Brown–Twiss (HBT) intensity interferometry of identical particles in the final state of the collisions. We propose that a variant of the entanglement enabled intensity interferometry (𝐸 2 ⁢𝐼 2 ) framework introduced by Cotler and Wilczek can provide a powerful alternative to HBT interferometry in extracting fundamental nonperturbative features of quantum chromodynamics at high energies. We apply this framework to demonstrate that the spatial distributions of color singlet (pomeron) configurations in nuclei are sensitive to measurements of exclusive resonant decays of 𝜌 mesons into 𝜋 ± pairs in ultrarelativistic ultraperipheral nuclear collisions (UPCs) at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. A preliminary analysis suggests that the model-independent extraction of pomeron distributions will require careful treatment of the interplay of 𝐸 2 ⁢𝐼 2 in the vector meson exclusive decay with the incoherent cross section for exclusive vector meson production. The 𝐸 2 ⁢𝐼 2 framework developed here is quite general. It can also be employed as a tool to extract information on the spin structure of pomeron couplings as well as enhance the discovery potential for rare odderon configurations from exclusive vector meson decays into few-particle final states both in UPCs and at the Electron-Ion Collider.

Impact of tracking resolution on 𝜙-meson spin alignment measurements

Measurements of global spin alignment of vector mesons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions can provide unique insights into spin-orbit interactions and vector meson dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma produced in those collisions. The global spin alignment is measured by the 00th coefficient of the spin density matrix, 𝜌 00 , via the polar angle (𝜃*) of the decay-kaon momentum in the parent rest frame with respect to the direction of the orbital angular momentum of the collision. Such measurements are affected by the angular and momentum resolutions of the reconstructed tracks in the experiment. Such effects are nontrivial because of kinematic complications caused by the boost to the parent rest frame, and could be important given that the global spin alignment signal is weak. In this paper, we investigate the effects of experimental tracking resolutions on measurements of the 𝜙 (1020) meson 𝜌 00 . We study these effects for two methods of 𝜌 00 measurements, the conventional method analyzing the 𝜙⁢−meson yield versus cos 2 ⁡𝜃* and the invariant mass (𝑚 inv ) method utilizing ⟨cos 2 ⁡𝜃*⟩ versus 𝑚 inv . Using typical resolution values from experiments, we find that the effect of track resolution on 𝜌 00 is small, well within typical measurement uncertainties.

Spatial imaging of polarized deuterons at the Electron-Ion Collider

We study diffractive vector meson production at small-x in the collision of electrons and polarized deuterons e + d $\uparrow$ . We consider the polarization dependence of the nuclear wave function of the deuteron, which results in an azimuthal angular dependence of the produced vector meson when the deuteron is transversely polarized. The Fourier coefficients extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the vector meson differential cross-section exhibit notable differences between longitudinally and transversely polarized deuterons. The angular dependence of the extracted effective deuteron radius provides direct insight into the structure of the polarized deuteron wave function. Furthermore, we observe slightly increased gluon saturation effects when the deuteron is longitudinally polarized compared to the transversely polarized case. The small-x observables studied in this work will be accessible at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Probing gluon saturation and nuclear structure in photon-nucleus collisions

We calculate exclusive vector meson photoproduction within the Color Glass Condensate framework in high-energy photon-nucleus scattering probed experimentally in ultra peripheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC. When the free parameters are constrained by the γ + p data from HERA, we predict significant nuclear suppression for both the coherent and incoherent photoproduction cross section in the TeV range. Our results indicate that the LHC data prefers even stronger saturation effects at the highest collision energies. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the linear polarization of photons in ulra peripheral collisions generates azimuthal modulations in the decay products of the exclusively produced vector meson. We show how these measurements can probe details of the nuclear geometry, specifically the deformed structure of the uranium nuclei.

Global quark spin correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The observation of the vector meson’s global spin alignment by the STAR Collaboration reveals that strong spin correlations may exist for quarks and antiquarks in relativistic heavy-ion collisions in the normal direction of the reaction plane. We propose a systematic method to describe such correlations in the quark matter. We classify them as local and long range quark spin correlations in the system. We show in particular that the effective quark spin correlations contain the genuine spin correlations originated directly from the dynamical process as well as those induced by averaging over other degrees of freedom. We also show that such correlations can be studied by measuring the vector meson’s spin density matrix and hyperon-hyperon and hyperon-anti-hyperon spin correlations. We present the relationships between these measurable quantities and spin correlations of quarks and antiquarks. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

X Y Z spectroscopy at electron-hadron facilities. III. Semi-inclusive processes with vector exchange

Inclusive production processes will be important for the first observations of X Y Z states at new generation electron-hadron colliders, as they generally benefit from larger cross sections than their exclusive counterparts. We make predictions of semi-inclusive photoproduction of the χ c 1 ( 1 P ) and X ( 3872 ) , whose peripheral production is assumed to be dominated by vector exchanges. We validate the applicability of vector meson dominance in the axial-vector charmonium sector and calculate production rates at center-of-mass energies relevant for future experimental facilities. We find the semi-inclusive cross sections near the threshold to be enhanced by a factor of ∼ 2 – 3 compared to the exclusive reaction and well-suited for a first observation in photoproduction. Exclusive photoproduction of excited ρ mesons decaying to four pions in ultraperipheral Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The intense photon fluxes from relativistic nuclei provide an opportunity to study photonuclear interactions in ultraperipheral collisions. In particular, it allows for the investigations of excited, light-flavour vector mesons. The measurement of coherently photoproduced 𝜋⁺𝜋 − 𝜋⁺𝜋 − final states in ultraperipheral Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is presented for the first time. The cross section, d𝜎/d𝑦, times the branching ratio (𝜌 → 𝜋⁺𝜋⁺𝜋 − 𝜋 − ) is found to be 47.8 ± 2.3 (stat.) ± 7.7 (syst.) mb in the rapidity interval |𝑦| < 0.5. The invariant mass distribution is not well described with a single Breit-Wigner resonance without an interference term. Including in- terference with a non-resonant contribution results in the mass and width values being too far from those reported in PDG, while the production of two interfering resonances, 𝜌(1450) and 𝜌(1700), also provides a good description of the data. The values of the masses (𝑚) and widths (Γ) of the resonances extracted from the fit assuming two interfering resonances are 𝑚₁ = 1385 ± 14 (stat.) ± 3 (syst.) MeV/𝑐², Γ₁ = 431 ± 36 (stat.) ± 82 (syst.) MeV/𝑐², 𝑚₂ = 1663 ± 13 (stat.) ± 22 (syst.) MeV/𝑐² and Γ₂ = 357 ± 31 (stat.) ± 49 (syst.) MeV/𝑐², respectively. The measured cross sections times the branching ratios are compared to recent theoretical predictions.

Production cross sections of light and charmed mesons in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation near 10.58 GeV

We report measurements of production cross sections for 𝜌 + , 𝜌 0 , 𝜔, 𝐾* + , 𝐾* 0 , 𝜙, 𝜂, 𝐾$^0_𝑆$, 𝑓 0 ⁡(980), 𝐷 + , 𝐷 0 , 𝐷$^+_𝑠$, 𝐷* + , 𝐷* 0 , and 𝐷*$^+_𝑠$ in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collisions at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV. The data were recorded by the Belle experiment, consisting of 571 fb −1 at 10.58 GeV and 74 fb −1 at 10.52 GeV. Production cross sections are extracted as a function of the fractional hadron momentum 𝑥 𝑝 . The measurements are compared to pythia Monte Carlo generator predictions with various fragmentation settings, including those that have increased fragmentation into vector mesons over pseudoscalar mesons. The cross sections measured for light hadrons are consistent with no additional increase of vector over pseudoscalar mesons. The charmed-meson cross sections are compared to earlier measurements—when available—including older Belle results, which they supersede. They are in agreement before application of an improved initial-state radiation correction procedure that causes slight changes in their 𝑥 𝑝 shapes.

Interacting mesons as degrees of freedom in a chiral model

Here, we study the equation of state of hot and dense hadronic matter using an extended chiral mean field (CMF) model framework where the addition is the inclusion of interactions of thermally excited mesons. This is implemented by calculating the in-medium masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, obtained through the explicit chiral symmetry-breaking and vector-interaction terms in the Lagrangian, respectively, prior to applying the mean-field approximation. As a result, the in-medium meson contributions generate a feedback term to the CMF’s equations of motion, which then modifies the equation of state. With this improvement, we quantify the effect on the equation of state of strongly interacting matter through comparisons with state-of-the-art lattice QCD results and other hadronic models like the hadron resonance gas model. We find that the results of the updated hadronic CMF model with an improved meson description (mCMF) provide a better agreement with lattice-QCD data for thermodynamic state variables across a wide range of temperatures and baryon chemical potentials.

Polarization of the 𝜙 meson in the hadronic phase with nucleon scatterings and a viscous hydrodynamic background

We extend our previous work on the spin alignment of the ϕ vector meson in the hadronic phase of the quark gluon plasma, by including effects of nucleon scatterings. The emission rates are calculated in a realistic hydrodynamic background simulated with the code FLUIDuM , for different beam energies. We find that all the effects taken into account cannot explain the out-of-plane spin alignment of the ϕ meson observed experimentally.

𝐽/𝜓-meson–nucleon scattering length from threshold photoproduction on light nuclei

The quality of recent Short-Range Correlations/Color-Transparency (SRC/CT) Collaboration 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction data off a 4 He target from Hall D at Jefferson Laboratory, combined with the feasibility of measuring the reaction close to the free-nucleon energy threshold, opens the door to using incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction to explore a variety of interesting physics aspects. An example is the estimation of the 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 scattering length |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | on the bound proton, obtained using the vector meson dominance model. The new experiment E12–25–002, conducted by the SRC/CT Collaboration, was recently approved in Hall D with the GlueX spectrometer, which will significantly enhance the number of reconstructed 𝐽/𝜓 mesons. Using a plane-wave theoretical model to generate quasidata, we estimated that the experiment could achieve a result of |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | = 3.08 ± 0.45 mfm. This value can be compared to an extraction based on the free proton data from the GlueX Collaboration, |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | = 3.08 ± 0.55 mfm. A comparison between the two would provide an opportunity to evaluate the effects of medium modification in light nuclei.

Probing quantum phenomena through photoproduction in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Photoproduction in ultra-peripheral relativistic heavy-ion collisions displays many unique features, often involving quantum mechanical coherence and two-source interference between photon emission from the two ions. We review the recent experimental results from RHIC and the LHC and theoretical studies of coherent vector meson photoproduction, emphasizing the quantum mechanical aspects of the interactions and the entanglement between the final state particles. These studies enrich our understanding of non-local realism, underscore the critical role of the polarization of the photon source, quantum interference and nuclear effect on the gluon distribution. It paves a way for quantitatively probing the quantum nature of these high-energy nuclear collisions.

Temperature measurement of Quark-Gluon plasma at different stages

In a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), the fundamental building blocks of matter, quarks and gluons, are under extreme conditions of temperature and density. A QGP could exist in the early stages of the Universe, and in various objects and events in the cosmos. The thermodynamic and hydrodynamic properties of the QGP are described by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and can be studied in heavy-ion collisions. Despite being a key thermodynamic parameter, the QGP temperature is still poorly known. Thermal lepton pairs (e + e − and μ + μ − ) are ideal penetrating probes of the true temperature of the emitting source, since their invariant-mass spectra suffer neither from strong final-state interactions nor from blue-shift effects due to rapid expansion. Here we measure the QGP temperature using thermal e+e− production at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The average temperature from the low-mass region (in-medium ρ 0 vector-meson dominant) is (2.01 ± 0.23) × 10 12 K, consistent with the chemical freeze-out temperature from statistical models and the phase transition temperature from Lattice QCD. The average temperature from the intermediate mass region (above the ρ0 mass, QGP dominant) is significantly higher at (3.25 ± 0.60) × 10 12 K. This work provides essential experimental thermodynamic measurements to map out the QCD phase diagram and understand the properties of matter under extreme conditions.

Probing nuclear structure at the Electron-Ion Collider and in ultra-peripheral nuclear collisions

Within the Color Glass Condensate framework, we demonstrate that exclusive vector meson production at high energy is sensitive to the geometric deformation of the target nucleus and subnucleon scale fluctuations. Deformation of the nucleus enhances the incoherent cross section in the small |t| region. Subnucleon scale fluctuations increase the incoherent cross section in the large |t| region. In ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs), larger deformation leads to a wider distribution of the minimal impact parameter B min required to produce a UPC. This, together with larger incoherent cross sections for larger deformation, results in smaller extracted radii. Our results demonstrate great potential for future studies of nuclear structure in UPCs and electron-ion collisions.

Overview of recent results from the STAR experiment

We highlight the STAR experiment’s recent measurements on electromagnetic and hard probes of nuclear collisions, which inform the field’s understanding of these physical phenomena and by extension QCD. Results on vector meson production from the high electromagnetic fields in glancing heavy-ion collisions are presented. Observables related to jets, high-momentum hadrons, heavy quarks and quarkonia in vacuum and their modification in head-on heavy-ion collisions are also presented. Studies using electromagnetic probes of the medium created in these collisions are presented as well. Finally, we conclude and give an outlook for STAR data-taking and measurements in the coming years.

First displaced vertex search for electroproduced dark-sector strongly interacting massive particles by the HPS experiment

The Heavy Photon Search experiment (HPS) is a fixed-target, electron beam experiment designed to search for 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − mass resonances and displaced decays using a forward acceptance spectrometer. This paper details the search for naturally long-lived “dark” vector mesons (𝑉 𝐷 ) arising from a dark sector of beyond-Standard-Model strongly interacting massive particles, characterized by a QCD-like 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(3) 𝐷 symmetry and coupled to the Standard Model photon via a new 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐷 gauge interaction mediated by the “heavy photon,” or 𝐴′. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 10 608 nb −1 collected during the 2016 HPS engineering run. The displaced vertex search for 𝑉 𝐷 → 𝑒 +⁢ 𝑒 − in the 𝑒 +⁢ 𝑒 − invariant mass range 39–179 MeV showed no statistically significant evidence for signal above the QED background.

Observation of the Charged-Particle Multiplicity Dependence of 𝜎 𝜓⁡(2⁢𝑆 )/𝜎 𝐽/𝜓 in 𝑝-Pb Collisions at 8.16 TeV

Bound states of charm and anticharm quarks, known as charmonia, have a rich spectroscopic structure that can be used to probe the dynamics of hadron production in high-energy hadron collisions. Here, the cross section ratio of excited (𝜓⁡(2⁢𝑆)) and ground state (𝐽/𝜓) vector mesons is measured as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in proton-lead (𝑝⁢Pb) collisions at a center-of-mass (CM) energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb −1 were collected using the CMS detector. The ratio is measured separately for prompt and nonprompt charmonia in the transverse momentum range 6.5 < 𝑝 T < 30 GeV and in four rapidity ranges spanning −2.865 < 𝑦 CM < 1.935. For the first time, a statistically significant multiplicity dependence of the prompt cross section ratio is observed in proton-nucleus collisions. There is no clear rapidity dependence in the ratio. The prompt measurements are compared with a theoretical model which includes interactions with nearby particles during the evolution of the system. These results provide additional constraints on hadronization models of heavy quarks in nuclear collisions.

Small-𝑥 gluon GPD constrained from deeply virtual 𝐽/𝜓 production and gluon PDF through universal-moment parametrization

We phenomenologically constrain the small-𝑥 and small-𝜉 gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) with the deeply virtual 𝐽/𝜓 production (DV⁢𝐽/𝜓⁢P) in the framework of GPDs through universal moment parameterization (GUMP). We use a hybrid cross-section formula combining collinear factorization to the next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy of the strong coupling 𝛼 𝑠 , with corrections from nonrelativistic QCD to account for the power corrections due to the heavy 𝐽/𝜓 mass. We reach reasonable fit to the measured differential cross sections of DV⁢𝐽/𝜓⁢P by H1 at the Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator as well as forward gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) from JAM22 global analysis. We find that both NLO and nonrelativistic corrections are significant for heavy vector meson productions. Of course, the gluon GPD we obtain still contains considerable freedom in need of inputs from other constraints, particularly in the distribution-amplitude-like region.
