Evaluation of bakeout procedure for small glass ultrahigh vacuum system
The characteristics of an orbiting molecular shield ultrahigh vacuum facility are described and some examples of potential applications are discussed. Published results of a kinetic theory analysis are given. Densities within the shield of less than 1000 molecules/cu cm can be obtained allowing high purity materials processing experiments to be performed in orbit under the simultaneous conditions of ultrahigh vacuum and microgravity. Two specific experiments are discussed: the production of ultrapure materials by the electrotransport technique developed at ERDA's Ames Laboratory, Iowa State University, and the vapor deposition and space preparation of silicon solar cells.

Accurate measurements in the ultrahigh vacuum range by a conventional McLeod gage requires degassing of the gage's glass walls. A closed system, in which mercury is forced into the gage by gravity alone, and in which the gage components are baked out for long periods, is used to achieve this degassing.
Adhesion of silicates cleaved in ultrahigh vacuum, discussing atomic bonding, dispersion and electrostatic charging
Ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) sample-transfer system developed features short-term (less than 30 minutes) transfer of samples from atmospheric pressure into sample manipulator within UHV analysis system without significantly degrading system pressure. New system is austere approach to sample transfer, involving no automation. Total cost of system is factor of 10 less than commercially available instruments.

The ultrahigh vacuum strain controlled thermal-mechanical strain cycling fatigue behavior of ASTAR 811C, 304 stainless steel and A-286 was studied. The step stress procedure of experimental strainrange partitioning was utilized to partition the inelastic strainranges for tests duplicating conditionings previously reported by TRW. An analytical method is described in which these partitioned inelastic strainrange data can be used to develop the four basic life relationships for these materials.
