Subleading corrections to the S 3 free energy of necklace quiver theories dual to massive IIA

We investigate the S 3 free energy of N = 3 Chern-Simons-matter quiver gauge theories with gauge group U(N) r (r ≥ 2) where the sum of Chern-Simons levels does not vanish, beyond the leading order in the large-N limit. We take two different approaches to explore the sub-leading structures of the free energy. First we evaluate the matrix integral for the partition function in the ’t Hooft limit using a saddle point approximation. Second we use an ideal Fermi-gas model to compute the same partition function, but in the limit of fixed Chern-Simons levels. The resulting expressions for the free energy F = – log Z are then compared in the overlapping parameter regime. The Fermi-gas approach also hints at a universal 1/6 log N correction to the free energy. Since the quiver gauge theories we consider are dual to massive Type IIA theory, we expect the sub-leading correction of the planar free energy in the large ’t Hooft parameter limit to match higher-derivative corrections to the tree-level holographic dual free energy, which have not yet been fully investigated.

Band structures and Z 2 invariants of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers from fully relativistic Dirac-Kohn-Sham theory using Gaussian-type orbitals

Two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit a wide range of remarkable phenomena, many of which owe their existence to the relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects. To understand and predict properties of materials containing heavy elements, such as the transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), relativistic effects must be taken into account in first-principles calculations. We present an all-electron method based on the four-component Dirac Hamiltonian and Gaussian-type orbitals (GTOs) that overcomes complications associated with linear dependencies and ill-conditioned matrices that arise when diffuse functions are included in the basis. Until now, there has been no systematic study of the convergence of GTO basis sets for periodic solids either at the nonrelativistic or the relativistic level. Here, in this study, we provide such a study of relativistic band structures of the 2D TMDs in the hexagonal (2H), tetragonal (1T), and distorted tetragonal (1T') structures, along with a discussion of their SOC-driven properties (Rashba splitting and Z 2 topological invariants). We demonstrate the viability of our approach even when large basis sets with multiple basis functions involving various valence orbitals (denoted triple- and quadruple-ζ) are used in the relativistic regime. Our method does not require the use of pseudopotentials and provides access to all electronic states within the same framework. Our study paves the way for direct studies of material properties, such as the parameters in spin Hamiltonians, that depend heavily on the electron density near atomic nuclei where relativistic and SOC effects are the strongest.

Generalising G 2 geometry: involutivity, moment maps and moduli

We analyse the geometry of generic Minkowski N = 1, D = 4 flux compactifications in string theory, the default backgrounds for string model building. In M-theory they are the natural string theoretic extensions of G2 holonomy manifolds. In type II theories, they extend the notion of Calabi-Yau geometry and include the class of flux backgrounds based on generalised complex structures first considered by Graña et al. (GMPT). Using E 7(7) × $\mathbb{R}$ + generalised geometry we show that these compactifications are characterised by an SU(7) ⊂ E 7(7) structure defining an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent space, and with a vanishing moment map, corresponding to the action of the diffeomorphism and gauge symmetries of the theory. The Kähler potential on the space of structures defines a natural extension of Hitchin’s G 2 functional. Using this framework we are able to count, for the first time, the massless scalar moduli of GMPT solutions in terms of generalised geometry cohomology groups. It also provides an intriguing new perspective on the existence of G 2 manifolds, suggesting possible connections to Geometrical Invariant Theory and stability.

Infinitely many 4D N = 1 SCFTs with a = c

Here, we study a rich set of four-dimensional N = 1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with both central charges identical: a = c. We construct them via the diagonal N = 1 gauging of the flavor symmetry G of a collection of N = 2 Argyres–Douglas theories of type D p (G), with or without additional adjoint chiral multiplets. In this way, we construct infinitely many theories that flow to interacting SCFTs with a = c in the infrared. Lastly, we briefly highlight the features of the SCFTs without a = c that arise from generalizing this construction.

Matter couplings and equivalence principles for soft scalars

Scalar effective field theories with enhanced soft limits behave in many ways like gauge theories and gravity. In particular, symmetries fix the structure of interactions and the tree-level S-matrix in both types of theories. We explore how this analogy persists in the presence of matter by considering theories with additional fields coupled to the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar or the special galileon in a way that is consistent with their symmetries. Using purely on-shell arguments, we show that these theories obey analogues of the S-matrix equivalence principle whereby all matter fields must couple to the DBI scalar or the special galileon through a particular quartic vertex with a universal coupling. These equivalence principles imply the universality of the leading double soft theorems in these theories, which are scalar analogues of Weinberg’s gravitational soft theorem, and can be used to rule out interactions with massless higher-spin fields when combined with analogues of the generalized Weinberg-Witten theorem. We verify in several examples that amplitudes with external matter fields nontrivially exhibit enhanced single soft limits and we show that such amplitudes can be constructed using soft recursion relations when they have sufficiently many external DBI or special galileon legs, including amplitudes with massive higher-spin fields. As part of our analysis we construct a recently conjectured special galileon-vector effective field theory.

Local order of orthorhombic weberite-type Y 3 TaO 7 as determined by neutron total scattering and density functional theory calculations

Weberite-type oxides are a family of oxides with A 3 BO 7 stoichiometry that can adopt different space groups depending on chemical composition. There is a discrepancy in previous studies as to whether Y 3 TaO 7 is the orthorhombic C222 1 or the Ccmm space group. Here, we describe the short- and long-range structural properties of weberite-type Y 3 TaO 7 using neutron total scattering data, which has a high sensitivity to the oxygen sublattice. Simultaneous analysis of both short- and long-range structural data via conventional Rietveld and small box modelling demonstrates that Y 3 TaO 7 is best modeled as C222 1 . While the Ccmm describes equally well the long-range structure, pair distribution function analysis revealed that the local atomic configuration can be best modelled as C222 1 . This is corroborated by first-principles calculations that confirm the energetic preference of the C222 1 over Ccmm. Further, neutron total scattering data are reported for the first time for the Y 3 TaO 7 weberite-type ceramics.

Factorized class $\mathrm{S}$ theories and surface defects

It is known that some theories of class S are actually factorized into multiple decoupled nontrivial four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 It is known that some theories of class S are actually factorized into multiple decoupled nontrivial four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 superconformal SU(2) QCD, describing this factorized theory as a class S theory of type A 3 on a five-punctured sphere with a twist line. Separately, we also present explicit checks that the Coulomb branch of a putative factorized class S theory has the expected product structure, in two examples.

Double holography in string theory

We develop the notion of double holography in Type IIB string theory realizations of braneworld models. The Type IIB setups are based on the holographic duals of 4d BCFTs comprising 4d N = 4 SYM on a half space coupled to 3d N = 4 SCFTs on the boundary. Based on the concrete BCFTs and their brane construction, we provide microscopic realizations of the intermediate holographic description, obtained by dualizing only the 3d degrees of freedom. Triggered by recent observations in bottom-up models, we discuss the causal structures in the full BCFT duals and intermediate descriptions. This confirms qualitative features found in the bottom-up models but suggests a refinement of their interpretation.

Integrating the full four-loop negative geometries and all-loop ladder-type negative geometries in ABJM theory

The decomposition of the four-point ABJM amplituhedron into negative geometries produces compact integrands of logarithmic of amplitudes such that the infrared divergence only comes from the last loop integration, from which we can compute the cusp anomalous dimension of the ABJM theory. In this note, we integrate L – 1 loop momenta of the L-loop negative geometries for all four-loop negative geometries and a special class of all-loop ladder-type negative geometries by a method based on Mellin transformation, and from these finite quantities we extract the corresponding contribution to the cusp anomalous dimension. We find that the infrared divergence of a box-type negative geometry at L = 4 is weaker than other negative geometries, then only tree-type negative geometries contribute to the cusp anomalous dimension at L = 4. For the all-loop ladder-type negative geometries, we prove and conjecture some recursive structures as integral equations in Mellin space and find that they cannot contribute zeta values like ζ 3 , ζ 5 to the cusp anomalous dimension.

Continuum-mediated self-interacting dark matter

Dark matter may self-interact through a continuum of low-mass states. This happens if dark matter couples to a strongly-coupled nearly-conformal hidden sector. This type of theory is holographically described by brane-localized dark matter interacting with bulk fields in a slice of 5D anti-de Sitter space. The long-range potential in this scenario depends on a non-integer power of the spatial separation, in contrast to the Yukawa potential generated by the exchange of a single 4D mediator. The resulting self-interaction cross section scales like a non-integer power of velocity. We identify the Born, classical and resonant regimes and investigate them using state-of-the-art numerical methods. We demonstrate the viability of our continuum-mediated framework to address the astrophysical small-scale structure anomalies. Investigating the continuum-mediated Sommerfeld enhancement, we demonstrate that a pattern of resonances can occur depending on the non-integer power. We conclude that continuum mediators introduce novel power-law scalings which open new possibilities for dark matter self-interaction phenomenology.

Mott vs Kondo: Influence of various density functional based methods on the Ce isostructural phase transition mechanism

The cerium iso-structural phase transition (γ–α) is dominated by f-electron localization changes that results in a magnetic ordering change and a volume collapse. Generally, these physics are difficult to capture with ab initio and first principles methods. However, previous works have shown various methods to be successful in predicting at least some of the physics of the γ to α phase transition. Therefore, here, we perform a broad survey of density functional based methods across three levels of theory and types of functions [GGA (generalized gradient approximation), MetaGGA, and hybrid functionals] and compare the results, focusing on hydrostatic compression across the phase boundary at zero kelvin. For the methods that best reproduce experimental results, we directly probe the predicted mechanisms and frame the results in the Mott/Kondo debate, assessing how the underlying methods and assumptions of different functionals can assess the physical drivers in the phase transition, providing insight into the governing processes of this unique phase transition.

A Typing Discipline for High-Assurance Control Systems

This poster describes a typing discipline for high-assurance industrial systems based on three novel type systems. The first type system, information flow control (IFC), controls the flow of data through the system. The second system, dependent session types, restricts messages exchanged during the execution of a communication protocol to avoid dangerous states. The third system uses dimensional analysis to avoid subtle bugs that adversaries can exploit to cause the system to enter a dangerous state. This poster describes how a combination of these approaches can prevent sophisticated cyber attacks, such as the infamous Stuxnet incident, from occurring. In addition, we provide experimental evidence to support the claim that these approaches can be applied in control systems that are resource-constrained.

R7-branes as charge conjugation operators

R7-branes are a class of recently discovered nonsupersymmetric real codimension-two duality defects in type IIB string theory predicted by the swampland cobordism conjecture. For type IIB realizations of 6D SCFTs with N = ( 2 , 0 ) supersymmetry, wrapping an R7-brane “at infinity” leads to a topological operator associated with a zero-form charge conjugation symmetry that squares to the identity. Similar considerations hold for those theories obtained from further toroidal compactification, but this can be obstructed by bundle curvature effects. Using some minimal data on the topological sector of the R7-branes, we extract the associated fusion rules for these charge conjugation operators. More broadly, we sketch a top down realization of various topological operators/interfaces associated with C , R , and T transformations. We also use holography to provide strong evidence for the existence of the R7-brane which is complementary to the cobordism conjecture. Similar considerations apply to other string-realized QFTs with symmetry operators constructed via nonsupersymmetric branes which carry a conserved charge. Confinement/deconfinement transition in the D0-brane matrix model — A signature of M-theory?

We study the confinement/deconfinement transition in the D0-brane matrix model (often called the BFSS matrix model) and its one-parameter deformation (the BMN matrix model) numerically by lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Our results confirm general expectations from the dual string/M-theory picture for strong coupling. In particular, we observe the confined phase in the BFSS matrix model, which is a nontrivial consequence of the M-theory picture. We suggest that these models provide us with an ideal framework to study the Schwarzschild black hole, M-theory, and furthermore, the parameter region of the phase transition between type IIA superstring theory and M-theory. A detailed study of M-theory via lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the D0-brane matrix model might be doable with much smaller computational resources than previously expected.

Refined large N duality for knots

We formulate large [Formula: see text] duality of [Formula: see text] refined Chern–Simons theory with a torus knot/link in [Formula: see text]. By studying refined BPS states in M-theory, we provide the explicit form of low-energy effective actions of Type IIA string theory with D4-branes on the [Formula: see text]-background. This form enables us to relate refined Chern–Simons invariants of a torus knot/link in [Formula: see text] to refined BPS invariants in the resolved conifold. Assuming that the extra [Formula: see text] global symmetry acts on BPS states trivially, the duality predicts graded dimensions of cohomology groups of moduli spaces of M2–M5 bound states associated to a torus knot/link in the resolved conifold. Thus, this formulation can be also interpreted as a positivity conjecture of refined Chern–Simons invariants of torus knots/links. We also discuss about an extension to non-torus knots.

D-instanton induced superpotential

We use string field theory to fix the normalization of the D-instanton corrections to the superpotential involving the moduli fields of type II string theory compactified on an orientifold of a Calabi-Yau threefold in the absence of fluxes. We focus on O(1) instantons whose only zero modes are the four bosonic modes associated with translation of the instanton in non-compact directions and a pair of fermionic zero modes associated with the two supercharges broken by the instanton. We work with a generic superconformal field theory and express our answer in terms of the spectrum of open strings on the instanton. We analyse the contribution of multi-instantons of this kind to the superpotential and argue that it vanishes when background fluxes are absent.

Evaluating one-loop string amplitudes

We evaluate one-loop open-string amplitudes at finite \alpha' α ′ for the first time. Our method involves a deformation of the integration contour over the modular parameter \tau τ to a fractal contour introduced by Rademacher in the context of analytic number theory. This procedure leads to explicit and practical formulas for the one-loop four-point amplitudes in type-I superstring theory, amenable to numerical evaluation. We plot the amplitudes as a function of the Mandelstam invariants s s and t t and directly verify long-standing conjectures about their behaviour at high energies.
