Full CI studies of the collinear transition state for the reaction F + H2 yields HF + H

Full CI calculations on the collinear transition state for the reaction F + H2 yields HF + H are reported. The full CI results are compared with those obtained from single-reference and multireference CI calculations and from single-reference CPF calculations. In general, only those methods which attempt to account for the effects of higher excitations, such as CPF or CI plus the Davidson correction, yield a transition-state location and barrier height in good agreement with the full CI. In an extended basis, the effect of higher excitations is estimated to lower the barrier by as much as 1.5 kcal/mol; such an effect would essentially eliminate the present discrepancy between theory and experiment.

Interplay between LHCSR proteins and state transitions governs the NPQ response in Chlamydomonas during light fluctuations

Abstract Photosynthetic organisms use sunlight as the primary energy source to fix CO 2 . However, in nature, light energy is highly variable, reaching levels of saturation for periods ranging from milliseconds to hours. In the green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii , safe dissipation of excess light energy by nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) is mediated by light‐harvesting complex stress‐related (LHCSR) proteins and redistribution of light‐harvesting antennae between the photosystems (state transition). Although each component underlying NPQ has been documented, their relative contributions to NPQ under fluctuating light conditions remain unknown. Here, by monitoring NPQ in intact cells throughout high light/dark cycles of various illumination periods, we find that the dynamics of NPQ depend on the timescales of light fluctuations. We show that LHCSRs play a major role during the light phases of light fluctuations and describe their role in growth under rapid light fluctuations. We further reveal an activation of NPQ during the dark phases of all high light/dark cycles and show that this phenomenon arises from state transition. Finally, we show that LHCSRs and state transition synergistically cooperate to enable NPQ response during light fluctuations. These results highlight the dynamic functioning of photoprotection under light fluctuations and open a new way to systematically characterize the photosynthetic response to an ever‐changing light environment.

Machine learning for impurity charge-state transition levels in semiconductors from elemental properties using multi-fidelity datasets

Quantifying charge-state transition energy levels of impurities in semiconductors is critical to understanding and engineering their optoelectronic properties for applications ranging from solar photovoltaics to infrared lasers. While these transition levels can be measured and calculated accurately, such efforts are time-consuming and more rapid prediction methods would be beneficial. Here, we significantly reduce the time typically required to predict impurity transition levels using multi-fidelity datasets and a machine learning approach employing features based on elemental properties and impurity positions. We use transition levels obtained from low-fidelity (i.e., local-density approximation or generalized gradient approximation) density functional theory (DFT) calculations, corrected using a recently proposed modified band alignment scheme, which well-approximates transition levels from high-fidelity DFT (i.e., hybrid HSE06). Further, the model fit to the large multi-fidelity database shows improved accuracy compared to the models trained on the more limited high-fidelity values. Crucially, in our approach, when using the multi-fidelity data, high-fidelity values are not required for model training, significantly reducing the computational cost required for training the model. Our machine learning model of transition levels has a root mean squared (mean absolute) error of 0.36 (0.27) eV vs high-fidelity hybrid functional values when averaged over 14 semiconductor systems from the II–VI and III–V families. As a guide for use on other systems, we assessed the model on simulated data to show the expected accuracy level as a function of bandgap for new materials of interest. Finally, we use the model to predict a complete space of impurity charge-state transition levels in all zinc blende III–V and II–VI systems.

High salt-induced PSI-supercomplex is associated with high CEF and attenuation of state transitions

Abstract While PSI-driven cyclic electron flow (CEF) and assembly of thylakoid supercomplexes have been described in model organisms like Chlamydomonas reinhardtii , open questions remain regarding their contributions to survival under long-term stress. The Antarctic halophyte, C. priscuii UWO241 (UWO241), possesses constitutive high CEF rates and a stable PSI-supercomplex as a consequence of adaptation to permanent low temperatures and high salinity. To understand whether CEF represents a broader acclimation strategy to short- and long-term stress, we compared high salt acclimation between the halotolerant UWO241, the salt-sensitive model, C. reinhardtii , and a moderately halotolerant Antarctic green alga, C. sp. ICE-MDV (ICE-MDV). CEF was activated under high salt and associated with increased non-photochemical quenching in all three Chlamydomonas species. Furthermore, high salt-acclimated cells of either strain formed a PSI-supercomplex, while state transition capacity was attenuated. How the CEF-associated PSI-supercomplex interferes with state transition response is not yet known. We present a model for interaction between PSI-supercomplex formation, state transitions, and the important role of CEF for survival during long-term exposure to high salt.

Experimental and theoretical examples of the value and limitations of transition state theory

Value and limitations of transition-state theory (TST) are reviewed. TST analyses of the temperature dependence of the 'direct' reactions CH3 + CH3CHO yields CH4 + CH3CO(1) and O + CH4 yields OH + CH3(2) are presented in detail, and other examples of TST usefulness are recalled. Limitations are discussed for bimolecular processes in terms of 'complex' vs. 'direct' mechanisms. The reaction OH + CO yields CO2 + H is discussed in this context. Limitations for unimolecular processes seem to arise only for simple bond fission processes, and recent advances are noted.

Photoisomerization transition state manipulation by entangled two-photon absorption

Significance Entangled two-photon absorption has attracted considerable interest due to its potential applications for low–photon flux spectroscopy and microscopy. The entanglement parameters in the twin-photon state can be exploited to control two-photon excitation processes. Here we demonstrate that photon entanglement provides a powerful novel control knob for the nuclear wave packets in an optically dark electronic state. We show that the transition states in the trans–cis photoisomerization of azobenzene, initiated by an entangled two-photon absorption process, can be manipulated significantly by entangled light. These effects can be monitored experimentally by coherent stimulated X-ray Raman signals which reveal electronic coherences during the passage through conical intersections.

Investigating explainable transfer learning for battery lifetime prediction under state transitions

Battery lifetime prediction at early cycles is crucial for researchers and manufacturers to examine product quality and promote technology development. Machine learning has been widely utilized to construct data-driven solutions for high-accuracy predictions. However, the internal mechanisms of batteries are sensitive to many factors, such as charging/discharging protocols, manufacturing/storage conditions, and usage patterns. These factors will induce state transitions, thereby decreasing the prediction accuracy of data-driven approaches. Transfer learning is a promising technique that overcomes this difficulty and achieves accurate predictions by jointly utilizing information from various sources. Hence, we develop two transfer learning methods, Bayesian Model Fusion and Weighted Orthogonal Matching Pursuit, to strategically combine prior knowledge with limited information from the target dataset to achieve superior prediction performance. From our results, our transfer learning methods reduce root-mean-squared error by 41% through adapting to the target domain. Furthermore, the transfer learning strategies identify the variations of impactful features across different sets of batteries and therefore disentangle the battery degradation mechanisms and the root cause of state transitions from the perspective of data mining. These findings suggest that the transfer learning strategies proposed in our work are capable of acquiring knowledge across multiple data sources for solving specialized issues.

The nature and role of quantized transition states in the accurate quantum dynamics of the reaction O + H2 yields OH + H

Accurate quantum mechanical dynamics calculations are reported for the reaction probabilities of O(3P) + H2 yields OH + H with zero total angular momentum on a single potential energy surface. The results show that the reactive flux is gated by quantized transition states up to the highest energy studied, which corresponds to a total energy of 1.90 eV. The quantized transition states are assigned and compared to vibrationally adiabatic barrier maxima; their widths and transmission coefficients are determined; and they are classified as variational, supernumerary of the first kind, and supernumerary of the second kind. Their effects on state-selected and state-to-state reactivity are discussed in detail.

Transition-state correlations for predicting thermochemistry of adsorbates and surface reactions

Estimating thermochemical properties from linear correlations may provide a pathway to circumvent expensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations for quantities such as pre-exponentials and temperature corrections to DFT energies. Here, in this work, we construct thermochemical scaling relations between C 1 –C 6 n-alkanes in the gas phase and adsorbed alkyl chains extending from several transition metal surfaces, and examine changes in the slope and fit between metals and adsorption sites. We subsequently add –OH, –NH 2 , C$=$O, and C$=$C functional groups to the C 1 –C 6 molecules and demonstrate strong linear correlations for thermochemistry across all species. We broaden the correlations to incorporate transition states of C 1 –C 6 n-alkane dehydrogenation reactions, where thermochemistry for computationally prohibitive transition-state calculations can be quickly assessed. Additionally, we rationalize the linearity of thermochemical correlations based on the composition of the homologous series and theoretical assessments. As an application of the correlations, we estimate pre-exponentials for elementary surface reactions of ethane and propane hydrogenolysis on Ru(0001), which is of relevance to plastic hydrogenolysis. Depending on kinetically important steps, entropic contributions may be necessary to include in certain reaction mechanisms; in contrasting examples, entropies are found to be relatively insignificant for ethane hydrogenolysis but pertinent for propane hydrogenolysis.

Ring-Opening Dynamics of the Cyclopropyl Radical and Cation: the Transition State Nature of the Cyclopropyl Cation

Here, we provide compelling experimental and theoretical evidence for the transition state nature of the cyclopropyl cation. Synchrotron photoionization spectroscopy employing coincidence techniques together with a novel simulation based on high-accuracy ab initio calculations reveal that the cation is unstable via its allowed disrotatory ring-opening path. The ring strains of the cation and the radical are similar, but both ring opening paths for the radical are forbidden when the full electronic symmetries are considered. These findings are discussed in light of the early predictions by Longuet-Higgins alongside Woodward and Hoffman; we also propose a simple phase space explanation for the appearance of the cyclopropyl photoionization spectrum. The results of this work allow the refinement of the cyclopropane C–H bond dissociation energy, in addition to the cyclopropyl radical and cation cyclization energies, via the Active Thermochemical Tables approach.

Universal Keplerian state transition matrix

A completely general method for computing the Keplerian state transition matrix in terms of Goodyear's universal variables is presented. This includes a new scheme for solving Kepler's problem which is a necessary first step to computing the transition matrix. The Kepler problem is solved in terms of a new independent variable requiring the evaluation of only one transcendental function. Furthermore, this transcendental function may be conveniently evaluated by means of a Gaussian continued fraction.

Catching Up on State Transitions in Cygnus X-1

In 2005 February we observed Cygnus X-1 over a period of 10 days quasi-continuously with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and the Ryle telescope. We present the results of the spectral and timing analysis on a timescale of 90 min and show that the behavior of Cyg X-1 is similar to that found during our years long monitoring campaign. As a highlight we present evidence for a full transition from the hard to the soft state that happened during less than three hours. The observation provided a more complete picture of a state transition than before, especially concerning the evolution of the time lags, due to unique transition coverage and analysis with high time resolution.

Improved temperature dependence of rate coefficients for rotational state-to-state transitions in H 2 O + H 2 O collisions

Aims. We present an improved database of temperature-dependent rate coefficients for rotational state-to-state transitions in H 2 O + H 2 O collisions. The database includes 231 transitions between the lower para-states of H 2 O and 210 transitions between its lower ortho-states (up toj= 7) and can be employed in cometary and planetary applications up to the temperature of 1000 K. Methods. We developed and applied a new general method that allows the generation of rate coefficients for excitation and quenching processes that automatically satisfy the principle of microscopic reversibility and also helps to cover the range of low collision energies by interpolation of cross sections between the process threshold and the computed data points. Results. We find that in the range of intermediate temperatures, 150

Rapid accretion state transitions following the tidal disruption event AT2018fyk

Following a tidal disruption event (TDE), the accretion rate can evolve from quiescent to near- Eddington levels and back over months{years timescales. This provides a unique opportunity to study the formation and evolution of the accretion flow around supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We present two years of multi-wavelength monitoring observations of the TDE AT2018fyk at X-ray, UV, optical and radio wavelengths. We identify three distinct accretion states and two state transitions between them. These appear remarkably similar to the behaviour of stellar-mass black holes in outburst. The X-ray spectral properties show a transition from a soft (thermal-dominated) to a hard (power-law dominated) spectral state around Lbol ~few x 10^(-2) LEdd, and the strengthening of the corona over time ~100-200 days after the UV/optical peak. Contemporaneously, the spectral energy distribution (in particular, the UV-to-X-ray spectral slope alphaox ) shows a pronounced softening as the outburst progresses. The X-ray timing properties also show a marked change, initially dominated by variability at long (>day) timescales while a high frequency (~10-3 Hz) component emerges after the transition into the hard state. At late times (~500 days after peak), a second accretion state transition occurs, from the hard into the quiescent state, as identi fied by the sudden collapse of the bolometric (X-ray+UV) emission to levels below 10-3.4 LEdd. Our fi ndings illustrate that TDEs can be used to study the scale (in)variance of accretion processes in individual SMBHs. Consequently, they provide a new avenue to study accretion states over seven orders of magnitude in black hole mass, removing limitations inherent to commonly used ensemble studies.

An analytical state transition matrix for an orbit perturbed by oblateness

A new analytical state transition matrix is presented. This transition matrix contains the two-body terms and the secular and short periodic terms due to the J2 oblateness perturbation. The matrix is derived from a satellite theory which uses a set of 8 canonical elements with the true anomaly as the independent variable. This theory was chosen because of its accuracy and concise formulation. It presents no problems concerning the accuracy of the mean motion, which is typical for classical satellite theories. Numerical experiments show the J2 transition matrix to be superior to the simple two-body matrix.

Force-Free Identification of Minimum-Energy Pathways and Transition States for Stochastic Electronic Structure Theories

Here, the accurate mapping of potential energy surfaces (PESs) is crucial to our understanding of the numerous physical and chemical processes mediated by atomic rearrangements, such as conformational changes and chemical reactions, and the thermodynamic and kinetic feasibility of these processes. Stochastic electronic structure theories, e.g., Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods, enable highly accurate total energy calculations that in principle can be used to construct the PES. However, their stochastic nature poses a challenge to the computation and use of forces and Hessians, which are typically required in algorithms for minimum-energy pathway (MEP) and transition state (TS) identification, such as the nudged elastic band (NEB) algorithm and its climbing image formulation. Here, we present strategies that utilize the surrogate Hessian line-search method, previously developed for QMC structural optimization, to efficiently identify MEP and TS structures without requiring force calculations at the level of the stochastic electronic structure theory. By modifying the surrogate Hessian algorithm to operate in path-orthogonal subspaces and at saddle points, we show that it is possible to identify MEPs and TSs by using a force-free QMC approach. We demonstrate these strategies via two examples, the inversion of the ammonia (NH 3 ) molecule and the nucleophilic substitution (S N 2) reaction F – + CH 3 F → FCH 3 + F – . We validate our results using Density Functional Theory (DFT)- and Coupled Cluster (CCSD, CCSD(T))-based NEB calculations. We then introduce a hybrid DFT-QMC approach to compute thermodynamic and kinetic quantities, free energy differences, rate constants, and equilibrium constants that incorporates stochastically optimized structures and their energies, and show that this scheme improves upon DFT accuracy. Our methods generalize straightforwardly to other systems and other high-accuracy theories that similarly face challenges computing energy gradients, paving the way for highly accurate PES mapping, transition state determination, and thermodynamic and kinetic calculations at significantly reduced computational expense.
