Recent progress in the transition radiation detector techniques

A list of some of the major experimental achievements involving charged particles in the relativistic region are presented. With the emphasis mainly directed to the X-ray region, certain modes of application of the transition radiation for the identification and separation of relativistic charged particles are discussed. Some recent developments in detection techniques and improvements in detector performances are presented. Experiments were also carried out to detect the dynamic radiation, but no evidence of such an effect was observed.

Observation of η c ( 1 S , 2 S ) and χ c J decays to 2 ( π + π − ) η via ψ ( 3686 ) radiative transitions

Based on ( 2712.4 ± 14.1 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) decays collected with the BESIII detector, we have observed, for the first time, the hadronic decays of S- and P-wave charmonium states into 2 ( π + π − ) η via radiative transitions from ψ ( 3686 ) . The branching fraction of the decay η c ( 1 S ) → 2 ( π + π − ) η has a significant dependence on the interference pattern between η c ( 1 S ) and non- η c ( 1 S ) processes. We measure it in both the destructive and constructive interference scenarios for the first time. The mass and width of the η c ( 1 S ) are measured to be M = ( 2984.14 ± 0.13 ± 0.38 ) MeV / c 2 and Γ = ( 28.82 ± 0.11 ± 0.82 ) MeV , respectively. Clear signals for the decays of the χ c J ( J = 0 , 1 , 2 ) and the η c ( 2 S ) to 2 ( π + π − ) η are also observed for the first time, and the corresponding branching fractions are measured. The ratio of the branching fractions between the η c ( 2 S ) and η c ( 1 S ) decays is significantly lower than the theoretical prediction, which might suggest different dynamics in their decays. Search for the radiative transition χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → γ ψ 2 ( 3823 )

Using 9.0 f b − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.178 to 4.278 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform the first search for the radiative transition χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → γ ψ 2 ( 3823 ) . No signal is observed and the upper limit on the ratio of branching fractions B ( χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → γ ψ 2 ( 3823 ) , ψ 2 ( 3823 ) → γ χ c 1 ) / B ( χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ ) is set at 0.075 at the 90% confidence level. Our result contradicts theoretical predictions under the assumption that the χ c 1 ( 3872 ) is the pure charmonium state χ c 1 ( 2 P ) . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Radiative transition probabilities for all vibrational levels in the X 1Sigma(+) state of HF

Recent analyses have led to an experimentally-based potential energy curve for the ground state of HF which includes nonadiabatic corrections and which joins smoothly to the long-range potential at an accurately determined dissociation limit. Using this potential curve and a new ab initio dipole moment function, accurate radiative transition probabilities among all vibrational levels of the ground state of HF have been calculated for selected rotational quantum numbers. Comparisons of Einstein A spontaneous emission coefficients, dipole moment absorption matrix elements, and Herman-Wallis factors for absorption bands are presented.

Resonance transition radiation X-ray laser

A free electron laser is proposed using a periodic dielectric and helical magnetic field. Periodic synchronism between the electrons and the optical wave is obtained at the period of the dielectric and not at the period of the helical magnetic field. The synchronism condition and the gain of the new device are derived. The effects on the gain from dephasing and beam expansion due to elastic scattering of the electrons in the periodic medium are included in the gain calculation. Examples of the resonance transition radiation laser and klystron are given. Operation at photon energies between 2.5 and 3.5 keV with net gain up to 12 percent is feasible using high electron-beam energies of 3 and 5 GeV. Moderate (300-MeV) beam energy allows operation between 80 to 110 eV with up to 57 percent net gain using a klystron design. In both cases, rapid foil heating may limit operation to a single electron-beam pulse.

Cerenkov and transition radiation in space-time periodic media.

The solution to the problem of determining the radiation emitted by a uniformly moving charged particle in a sinusoidally space-time periodic medium is obtained. The space-time periodicity can be considered as due to a strong pump wave and is expressed as a traveling-wave-type change in the dielectric constant or the plasma density. The solution covers also the limiting case of sinusoidally stratified media. The expression and spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic field are determined for different media: dielectric, isotropic and uniaxial plasma. Depending on the nature of the medium and the velocity of the particle, the radiated field is of the Cerenkov and/or transition type. The Brillouin diagram is used extensively in understanding and determining the nature, extent, and spectrum of the different modes of radiation, and a focusing effect is also studied.

Radiative transition probabilities of neutral and singly ionized Europium estimated by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a versatile technique for compositional analysis for solids, liquids, or gasses. LIBS is an asset for the quantitative or qualitative analysis of resource limited materials like actinides and rare earths because it is quasi-nondestructive. Two Eu 2 O 3 pellets were synthesized to be a test and validation set, respectively. Spectral lines identified from the National Institute of Standards and Technology database with fundamental data reported were used to form Saha-Boltzmann plots. The Saha-Boltzmann plots were used to determine the plasma temperatures and electron densities of the laser-induced plasmas for both samples. These Saha-Boltzmann plots were then used to calculate previously unreported transition probabilities associated with identified peaks. Additionally, the transition probabilities presented in this paper provide the capability for calibration free LIBS to be performed more readily on europium samples and the spectroscopic analysis of stellar bodies. Eight previously unreported transition probabilities are presented in this paper; five for Eu I and three for Eu II. The transition probabilities for Eu I ranged from 0.172 to 7.38 × 10 7 s -1 and those for Eu II ranged from 1.56 to 6.75 × 10 7 s -1 .

Radiative transition probabilities of neutral and singly ionized rare earth elements (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) estimated by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential to society given their prevalence in many modern technologies. Quantitative elemental analysis of REEs is therefore a critical capability. Calibration free–laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS) is a rapidly maturing and promising approach to quantitative elemental analysis with many attractive qualities. The application of CF-LIBS to analyzing samples containing the REEs is hindered by a lack of fundamental data, specifically transition probabilities (TPs). As such, this study seeks to help address this knowledge deficiency by reporting 967 previously unreported TPs for 13 REEs (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium). The method developed in this study to estimate the TPs requires small amounts of material (a few nanograms) compared with other approaches (~ milligrams), uses non-specialized equipment, and does not involve complicated sample preparations.

Radiative transitions involving the (2p2)(3 Pe) metastable autodetaching of H(-)

The absorption coefficient for the free-bound transition H (ls) + e(-)+ h omega yields H(-)(2 sq p,(3)P(e)) is calculated (together with the differential emission rate for the inverse process) using ls - 2s - 2p close coupling continuum wave functions and a Hylleraas bound state wave function. A maximum in the absorption and emission spectra is found to occur at a photon wavelength of 1219.5 A, which is 2 A closer to the Lyman alpha line than predicted by the calculations of Drake, and is in closer agreement with the stellar absorption feature identified by Heap and Stecher. The free-bound absorption process appears to be a significant source of continuous ultraviolet opacity.

Radiative transitions involving the /2p2/ 3Pe metastable autodetaching state of H-

A Hylleraas bound-state wave function and 1s-2s-2p close-coupling continuum wave functions are used to calculate the absorption coefficient for the free-bound transition of H(1s) + e + quantum to a H anion in (2p2,3Pe) and the differential emission rate for the inverse process. The absorption and emission spectral maximum is found to be at a photon wavelength of 1219.5 A, an improvement of 2 A on other calculations. This free-bound absorption process appears to be a significant source of continuous ultraviolet opacity.

Effects of plasma microfields on radiative transitions from atomic levels above the ionization threshold

The effects of plasma electric microfields on line-like optical features arising from atomic levels above the ionization threshold are investigated within the framework of the quasi-static and single-frequency dynamic-field theories of spectral-line broadening. The 2p(23)P to 1s2p(3)P and 2s2p(3)P to 1s2s(3)S transitions in helium and helium-like ions are treated as examples. The mixing of the doubly excited levels in the perturbing microfields produces Stark broadening of the emission lines and induces autoionization of the 2p(23)P level, which, unlike the 2s2p(3)P level, is metastable against autoionization in the field-free environment. Determination of the complete Stark-broadening profiles in thermal plasmas is complicated by the need to include the effects of both the (quasi-static) ion and the (dynamic) electron fields. Under nonequilibrium conditions, where electric fields from either electron or ion plasma waves can far exceed nearby particle fields, the calculation and interpretation of the line shapes may be simplified and could provide a diagnostic probe of the wave-field properties.

Calculation of radiative properties of nonequilibrium hydrogen plasma

A computer program called NEQRAP is described that calculates the radiative properties of nonequilibrium ionized hydrogen. From the given electron temperature, electron density, and atom density values (which do not necessarily satisfy the equilibrium relationship) and intensities of incident radiation, the non-Boltzmann populations of electronic states are computed by solving the equation of quasi-steady-state population distribution. Emission and absorption coefficients are determined as functions of wavelength by invoking the principle of detailed balance between the upper and lower states of each radiative transition. Radiative transport through the medium is computed assuming a one-dimensional uniform slab. The rate of ionic reaction is also computed. When used on a sample case, the program shows that there is a large difference between the calculated intensities of radiation emitted by a bulk of equilibrium and nonequilibrium hydrogen. The accuracy of the program is estimated to be better than 10%.
