Assessment of space environment induced microdamage in toughened composite materials

The effects of simulated space environments on the microdamage in a series of commercially available toughened matrix composite systems was determined. Low-earth orbit (LEO) exposures were simulated by thermal cycling; geosynchronous orbit (GEO) exposures were simulated by electron irradiation plus thermal cycling. Material response was characterized by assessing the induced microcracking and its influence on chemical and mechanical property changes. All materials, including several advanced, tough thermoplastics microcracked when exposed to the simulated LEO environment except a 177 C cured single phase toughened epoxy composite. The GEO simulated environment produced microdamage in all materials. The results suggest that increased matrix toughness may not be the overriding factor leading to improved durability in the space environment.

Zirconia toughened SiC whisker reinforced alumina composites small business innovation research

The objective of this phase 1 project was to develop a ceramic composite with superior fracture toughness and high strength, based on combining two toughness inducing materials: zirconia for transformation toughening and SiC whiskers for reinforcement, in a controlled microstructure alumina matrix. The controlled matrix microstructure is obtained by controlling the nucleation frequency of the alumina gel with seeds (submicron alpha-alumina). The results demonstrate the technical feasibility of producing superior binary composites (Al2O3-ZrO2) and tertiary composites (Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC). Thirty-two composites were prepared, consolidated, and fracture toughness tested. Statistical analysis of the results showed that: (1) the SiC type is the key statistically significant factor for increased toughness; (2) sol-gel processing with a-alumina seed had a statistically significant effect on increasing toughness of the binary and tertiary composites compared to the corresponding mixed powder processing; and (3) ZrO2 content within the range investigated had a minor effect. Binary composites with an average critical fracture toughness of 6.6MPam sup 1/2, were obtained. Tertiary composites with critical fracture toughness in the range of 9.3 to 10.1 MPam sup 1/2 were obtained. Results indicate that these composites are superior to zirconia toughened alumina and SiC whisker reinforced alumina ceramic composites produced by conventional techniques with similar composition from published data.

Analysis of whisker-toughened ceramic components - A design engineer's viewpoint

The analysis of components fabricated from whisker-toughened ceramic matrix composites requires a departure from the 'factor-of-safety' design philosophy prevalent in the design of metallic structural component, which are more tolerant of flaws. A public-domain computer algorithm has been developed which, in conjunction with a general-purposed FEM program, can predict the fast-fracture reliability of a structural component under multiaxial loading conditions. The present version of the algorithm, designated 'Toughened Ceramics Analysis and Reliability Evaluation of Structures', accounts for material symmetry imposed by whisker orientation; the processes of crack deflection and crack pinning are also addressed.

Properties of five toughened matrix composite materials

The use of toughened matrix composite materials offers an attractive solution to the problem of poor damage tolerance associated with advanced composite materials. In this study, the unidirectional laminate strengths and moduli, notched (open-hole) and unnotched tension and compression properties of quasi-isotropic laminates, and compression-after-impact strengths of five carbon fiber/toughened matrix composites, IM7/E7T1-2, IM7/X1845, G40-800X/5255-3, IM7/5255-3, and IM7/5260 have been evaluated. The compression-after-impact (CAI) strengths were determined primarily by impacting quasi-isotropic laminates with the NASA Langley air gun. A few CAI tests were also made with a drop-weight impactor. For a given impact energy, compression after impact strengths were determined to be dependent on impactor velocity. Properties and strengths for the five materials tested are compared with NASA data on other toughened matrix materials (IM7/8551-7, IM6/1808I, IM7/F655, and T800/F3900). This investigation found that all five materials were stronger and more impact damage tolerant than more brittle carbon/epoxy composite materials currently used in aircraft structures.

Toughening of PMR composites by gradient semi-interpenetrating networks

The toughening of the PMR-15 and LARC RP-46 high temperature thermosetting polyimides is presently attempted through the construction of a semiinterpenetrating network at ply interfaces through the use of the Matrimid 5218 thermoplastic polyimide powder, whose 315-320 glass transition temperature is compatible with the PMR matrices. The 60 vol pct fiber composites thus prepared for the two resins, with and without toughening, were comprehensively characterized in flexure, tension, intralaminar and short beam shear, compression and quasi-isotropic short-block compression, as well as modes I and II interlaminar fracture toughness and compression after impact.

Static and dynamic strain energy release rates in toughened thermosetting composite laminates

In this work, the static and dynamic fracture properties of several thermosetting resin based composite laminates are presented. Two classes of materials are explored. These are homogeneous, thermosetting resins and toughened, multi-phase, thermosetting resin systems. Multi-phase resin materials have shown enhancement over homogenous materials with respect to damage resistance. The development of new dynamic tests are presented for composite laminates based on Width Tapered Double Cantilevered Beam (WTDCB) for Mode 1 fracture and the End Notched Flexure (ENF) specimen. The WTDCB sample was loaded via a low inertia, pneumatic cylinder to produce rapid cross-head displacements. A high rate, piezo-electric load cell and an accelerometer were mounted on the specimen. A digital oscilloscope was used for data acquisition. Typical static and dynamic load versus displacement plots are presented. The ENF specimen was impacted in three point bending with an instrumented impact tower. Fracture initiation and propagation energies under static and dynamic conditions were determined analytically and experimentally. The test results for Mode 1 fracture are relatively insensitive to strain rate effects for the laminates tested in this study. The test results from Mode 2 fracture indicate that the toughened systems provide superior fracture initiation and higher resistance to propagation under dynamic conditions. While the static fracture properties of the homogeneous systems may be relatively high, the apparent Mode 2 dynamic critical strain energy release rate drops significantly. The results indicate that static Mode 2 fracture testing is inadequate for determining the fracture performance of composite structures subjected to conditions such as low velocity impact. A good correlation between the basic Mode 2 dynamic fracture properties and the performance is a combined material/structural Compression After Impact (CAI) test is found. These results underscore the importance of examining rate-dependent behavior for determining the longevity of structures manufactured from composite materials.

Elastomer-Toughened Polyimide Adhesives

T-Peel strengths of adhesive/Titanium bonds are compared for LARC-13 with and without elastomer additives. Elastomer toughening (incorporation of small amounts of rubber into polymer matrix) has been one of the most successful methods for modifying polymer toughness. Addition polyimides are currently under consideration as high-temperature adhesives for bonding composite materials such as titanium.

Elastomer toughened polyimide adhesives

A rubber-toughened addition-type polyimide composition is disclosed which has excellent high temperature bonding characteristics in the fully cured state, and improved peel strength and adhesive fracture resistance physical property characteristics. The process for making the improved adhesive involves preparing the rubber containing amic acid prepolymer by chemically reacting an amine-terminated elastomer and an aromatic diamine with an aromatic dianhydride with which a reactive chain stopper anhydride was mixed, and utilizing solvent or mixture of solvents for the reaction.

Transformation toughened ceramics for the heavy duty diesel engine technology program

The objective of this program is to develop an advanced high temperature oxide structural ceramic for application to the heavy duty diesel engine. The approach is to employ transformation toughening by additions of ZrO.5HfO.5O2 solid solution to the oxide ceramics, mullite (2Al2O3S2SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3). The study is planned for three phases, each 12 months in duration. This report covers Phase 1. During this period, processing techniques were developed to incorporate the ZrO.5HfO.5O2 solid solution in the matrices while retaining the necessary metastable tetragonal phase. Modulus of rupture and of elasticity, coefficient of thermal expansion, fracture toughness by indent technique and thermal diffusivity of representative specimens were measured. In Phase 2, the process will be improved to provide higher mechanical strength and to define the techniques for scale up to component size. In Phase 3, full scale component prototypes will be fabri-]cated.

NASA/aircraft industry standard specification for graphite fiber toughened thermoset resin composite material

A standard specification for a selected class of graphite fiber/toughened thermoset resin matrix material was developed through joint NASA/Aircraft Industry effort. This specification was compiled to provide uniform requirements and tests for qualifying prepreg systems and for acceptance of prepreg batches. The specification applies specifically to a class of composite prepreg consisting of unidirectional graphite fibers impregnated with a toughened thermoset resin that produce laminates with service temperatures from -65 F to 200 F when cured at temperatures below or equal to 350 F. The specified prepreg has a fiber areal weight of 145 g sq m. The specified tests are limited to those required to set minimum standards for the uncured prepreg and cured laminates, and are not intended to provide design allowable properties.

Interlaminar G(IIc) evaluation of toughened-resin matrix composites using the end-notched flexure test

The usefulness of the end-notched flexure (ENF) test for measuring G(IIc) for toughened composites was evaluated. Calculations were made using the measured flexural compliance from the ENF test and the measured axial modulus. Tests were conducted on three different composite materials, using laminates with two different span lengths and insert sizes. The error associated with neglecting nonlinear terms in the displacement-curvature relationship was analyzed to demonstrate the influence of specimen geometry on G(IIc) measurement. It is concluded that G(IIc) measurement may vary with the method of calculation, span length, or insert thickness, but these effects are minor compared to the large differences in measurements obtained for different materials. Hence, the ENF test is a valid one for screening materials for improvements in interlaminar shear fracture toughness.

Space radiation effects on an elastomer-toughened epoxy-graphite composite

An elastomer-toughened epoxy-graphite composite system (CE339/T300) was evaluated for its potential durability in the space radiation environment. The physical and chemical response of this system was characterized following exposure to radiation doses equivalent to 20 to 30 years in geosynchronous orbit using 1 MeV electrons. The results show that electrons generate extensive crosslinking and embrittlement of the matrix. This embrittlement results in chemical and mechanical property changes that would limit the service life of this epoxy system in some space structure applications.

Space radiation effects on the dimensional stability of a toughened epoxy graphite composite

The effects of a simulated space radiation environment on the dimensional stability of an elastomer-toughened epoxy-graphite composite were determined. The response of the material was characterized following exposure to radiation doses equivalent to geosynchronous orbit lifetimes ranging from 6 months to 30 years. The results show that radiation interacts with the epoxy matrix to embrittle the composite, beginning at relatively low total doses (10 to the 7th power rads). The embrittlement results in thermal expansion changes and significant laminate microcracking during thermal cycling. These property changes could limit the service life of this material in some spacecraft applications.

Toughening of a thermoplastic matrix composite - Processing issues

The use of a rubber modified thermoplastic resin has been investigated as a method to improve the impact damage and the Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of a unidirectional continuous carbon fiber composite. Test results show that the improvement in the fracture toughness is less than expected due to rubber particle agglomeration, poor fiber/matrix adhesion and the induced crystallization of the matrix. These restrictions must be eliminated in order to evaluate the maximum potential of a rubber toughened thermoplastic matrix on a composite's fracture toughness.
