Cluster for Research Excellence (CRE) for Accelerator Physics

The purpose of this Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) was to establish a Cluster of Research Excellence (CRE) for Accelerator Physics and broaden the accelerator physics collaboration between Northern Illinois University (NIU) and Fermilab. The CRE was based in both Fermilab’s Accelerator Division and in NIU’s Department of Physics. A research agenda and strategy for the CRE for Accelerator Physics included specific research topics, experiments, and research facility upgrades. The scope of the research program covered two thrusts with subtopics in the Accelerator Science Research Program utilizing the infrastructure of FAST, IOTA, the Fermilab Accelerator Complex, and the Illinois Accelerator Research Center (IARC). Specific areas of proposed exploration included: 1.Tests of novel “nonlinear integrable” systems including beam self-fields; 2.Experimental tests of phase-space diffusion and chaos in intense beams; 3.Investigate technically feasible approaches towards next generation intenseneutrino facilities; 4.Understanding optical control of charged particle beams; 5.Exploitation of bright electron beams from FAST for novel applications; 6. Conduct research into accelerator-based ‘precision science’, such as Muon g-2, EDM, Mu2e, etc.

EPCAPE-PT-LANL Measurements: Condensation Particle Counter

Coastal cities offer a unique environment for studying aerosol-cloud interactions and the effects of urban emissions on cloud properties. As part of the Eastern Pacific Cloud Aerosol Precipitation Experiment (EPCAPE), the Partitioning Thrust by Los Alamos National Laboratory (EPCAPE-PT-LANL) was conducted. Our campaign focused on measuring the optical and chemical properties of aerosols and their interactions within marine stratocumulus clouds in La Jolla, California. EPCAPE-PT-LANL enhances the primary goals of EPCAPE through innovative observations of vapor-phase transitions between aerosols and cloud droplets, the impact of black carbon on aerosol-cloud dynamics, and the effects of cloud processing on aerosol optical properties. Instrument: Condensational particle counter 3070 (TSI) Calibration: No calibration during the campaign. Files: data_10sec_CPC.csv, data_10min_CPC.csv Header: - NumberConcentration[/cm3]: Number concentration of aerosol particles measured by the CPC, expressed in particles per cubic centimeter. - NumberConcentration[/cm3]_QC: Number concentration of aerosol particles after quality control adjustments or filtering, expressed in particles per cubic centimeter. - QualityControl_Flag[bool]: A boolean flag indicating whether the measurement is flagged for quality control checks, (0=pass) - CVI_Flag[bool]: A boolean flag indicating whether the Counterflow Virtual Impactor (CVI) was active (true) or inactive (false) during the measurement

Versatile & Intelligent Biodetection via Environmental Sensing (VIBES)

Reactive health monitoring strategies during events like the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for predictive, threat-agnostic diagnostics that can detect both known diseases and novel chemical or biological threats. To address this, we investigated an optical biosensor as a breath volatile organic compound (VOC) analyzer, aiming to emulate biological olfaction. We assembled and validated the device with thin film metal coated substrate-based sensors. We immobilized small biological recognition elements on the substrates and delivered controlled concentrations of target VOCs. The sensor was irradiated with a visible laser and the sensor signal was recorded. We characterized the laser performance and tested 3 recognition elements for 2 VOCs with varying concentrations (1-100 ppm). We also evaluated enhancement of the signal using nanostructures on the metal film in comparison with planar film substrate. We demonstrated detecting ethanol reliably at concentrations as low as ~2 ppm along with preliminary detection of acetone (<100 ppm). We also found several unexpected factors that influence the sensor behavior that should be addressed to further refine the device’s performance. The nanostructures were, as expected, found to amplify the sensor signals. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of the optical bio-sensing modality for breath VOC monitoring at physiologically relevant levels. This positions LLNL to develop a low-cost, scalable, broad-spectrum health monitoring capability aligned with the Early Detection thrust of the Bioresilience Mission Focus Area and attract external funding.

Instrument: Ground based counter flow virtual impactor (Brechtel Inc) Data Notes: A factor of 6.7 needs to be applied to all cloud droplet residual concentration to correct the enhancement of the concentration because all the residual samples collected at 100 lpm were delivered into the 15 lpm of CVI sample flow.
