Tough Errors are no Match (TEAM): Optimizing the Quantum Compiler for Noise Resilience

This report summarizes our contributions to the Department of Energy’s Tough Errors are no Match (TEAM) project (DE-SC0020377) under Thrust 2: Quantum Programming and Compilation. The central outcomes of this work included a novel efficient quantum compiling algorithm which works without requiring the quantum computer to exactly invert its operations, answering a longstanding open problem in quantum compiling. Additional results include the implementation of zero-noise extrapolation error mitigation in collaboration with the Unitary Fund, as well as novel quantum algorithms for entanglement detection and pseudorandomness.

LYNM PE1 Shot A Meteorology Team Technical Report

Weather support for Shot A was done by NOAA’s Air Resources Laboratory (ARL) / Special Operations and Research Division (SORD) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Weather support activities included wind and precipitation forecasting, maintaining and monitoring PE1 meteorology towers MT02-11, maintaining and monitoring the ARL/SORD tower on Aqueduct Mesa (A12AI, also called MT01), maintaining and monitoring the Blackbrush energy flux tower, radiosonde preparation and launch, providing weather conditions on shot day for go/no-go criteria, and quality control and submission of the datasets. ARL/SORD additionally maintains and monitors the meteorological tower network (Mesonet) and sodar (at Desert Rock) for NNSS.

Idaho National Laboratory Team Visits NCERC

The DOE/NRC Criticality Safety for Commercial-Scale High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) for Fuel Cycle and Transportation (DNCSH) initiative is a collaboration between the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission focused on criticality safety benchmarking for processing and transportation applications related to HALEU and Advanced Reactors. The project includes design, siting and construction of a horizontal split table (HST), which has long been recognized as a need for validating advanced reactor systems.

Tough Errors are no Match (TEAM): Optimizing the Quantum Compiler for Noise Resilience

This project builds toward a comprehensive error-mitigating toolkit that makes quantum programming more robust and adaptive to the noisy, resource-limited nature of today’s quantum hardware. To that end, it integrates established error-mitigation methods — such as zero-noise extrapolation and dynamical decoupling — directly into compiler infrastructures. These techniques will be packaged as modules that can automatically adjust and combine based on performance analysis, enabling compilers to explore large design spaces and produce optimized, low-noise quantum programs with minimal manual intervention. In parallel, this project also explores new approaches to analog quantum programming or quantum simulation, and has developed the programming language SimuQ which treats quantum Hamiltonian evolution as the central object.

Durability of ABC Team Wall Assemblies

This study evaluates the long-term hygrothermal durability of four advanced retrofit wall systems using a field test facility located in Hollywood, South Carolina, representative of a mixed-humid coastal climate (Zone 3). The research focuses on assessing the thermal and moisture performance of a baseline wall assembly retrofitted with (1) Tremco/Dryvit prefabricated panel systems (Revitalite and Fedderlite), (2) Reinforced Fiberglass Plastic (RFP) panels developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and (3) Vacuum Insulated Panels (VIP) integrated with EPS by Home Innovation Research Labs (HIRL) and ORNL. A baseline wall representing a typical uninsulated wood-frame construction was used for comparison.
