Long range surface plasmons in birefringent media

The propagation properties of surface plasmon polaritons guided by thin metal films bounded by birefringent media are investigated. For the very thin (less than or equal to 150 A) films required to produce long propagation distances, the effects of birefringence on the dispersion relations are found to be minimal. A small effect of the birefringence on the mode attenuation is found.

Parallel-processing with surface plasmons, a new strategy for converting the broad solar spectrum

A new strategy for efficient solar-energy conversion is based on parallel processing with surface plasmons: guided electromagnetic waves supported on thin films of common metals like aluminum or silver. The approach is unique in identifying a broadband carrier with suitable range for energy transport and an inelastic tunneling process which can be used to extract more energy from the more energetic carriers without requiring different materials for each frequency band. The aim is to overcome the fundamental 56-percent loss associated with mismatch between the broad solar spectrum and the monoenergetic conduction electrons used to transport energy in conventional silicon solar cells. This paper presents a qualitative discussion of the unknowns and barrier problems, including ideas for coupling surface plasmons into the tunnels, a step which has been the weak link in the efficiency chain.

The surface plasmon resonance effect in holography.

A hologram has been made using a surface plasmon resonance wave as the reference beam. The surface wave was stimulated on a 1200-line/mm aluminum reflection grating that was coated with a thin layer of high-resolution photographic emulsion. Experimental results are presented.

Electronically Tunable Color Filter with Surface Plasmon Waves

Last year, I had reported a novel phenomenon of voltage-induced color-selective absorption with surface plasmons (Appl. Phys. Lett. 67, 2749)...A prototype ( of a tunable notch filter) has been built using liquid crystal as the EO material.

Sub-micron surface plasmon resonance sensor systems

Wearable or implantable devices combining microfluidic control of sample and reagent flow and micro-cavity surface plasmon resonance sensors functionalized with surface treatments or coatings capable of specifically binding to target analytes, ligands, or molecules in a bodily fluid are provided. The devices can be used to determine the presence and concentration of target analytes in the bodily fluids and thereby help diagnose, monitor or detect changes in disease conditions.

Surface Plasmon Tunable Color Filter and Projection Display

A novel projection display, based on a new phenomenon of voltage-induced color-selective absorption with surface plasmons, are able to generate bright image on a large screen with high efficiency. In addition, neither color filters nor phosphors are needed to generate the color. With the incident beam of ±7° half cone angle, the color purity of this device can be as good as the CRT displays, and the contrast ratio can reach over 200:1.

Solar energy conversion using surface plasmons for broadband energy transport

A new strategy for efficient solar energy conversion based on parallel processing with surface plasmons is introduced. The approach is unique in identifying: (1) a broadband carrier with suitable range for energy transport, and (2) a technique to extract more energy from the more energetic photons, without sequential losses or unique materials for each frequency band. The aim is to overcome the fundamental losses associated with the broad solar spectrum and to achieve a higher level of spectrum splitting than has been possible in semiconductor systems.

Sub-micron surface plasmon resonance sensor systems

A sensor for detecting the presence of a target analyte, ligand or molecule in a test fluid, comprising a light transmissive substrate on which an array of surface plasmon resonant (SPR) elements is mounted is described. A multi-channel sensor for detecting the presence of several targets with a single micro-chip sensor is described. A multi-channel sensor including collections of SPR elements which are commonly functionalized to one of several targets is also described. The detectors sense changes in the resonant response of the SPR elements indicative of binding with the targets.
