Terahertz Second-Harmonic Generation from Lightwave Acceleration of Symmetry-Breaking Nonlinear Supercurrents

We report terahertz (THz) light-induced second harmonic generation, in superconductors with inversion symmetry that forbid even-order nonlinearities. The THz second harmonic emission vanishes above the superconductor critical temperature and arises from precession of twisted Anderson pseudospins at a multicycle, THz driving frequency that is not allowed by equilibrium symmetry. We explain the microscopic physics by a dynamical symmetry breaking principle at sub-THz-cycle by using quantum kinetic modeling of the interplay between strong THz-lightwave nonlinearity and pulse propagation. In this work, the resulting nonzero integrated pulse area inside the superconductor leads to light-induced nonlinear supercurrents due to subcycle Cooper pair acceleration, in contrast to dc-biased superconductors, which can be controlled by the band structure and THz driving field below the superconducting gap.

Quantized critical supercurrent in SrTiO 3 -based quantum point contacts

Superconductivity in SrTiO 3 occurs at remarkably low carrier densities and therefore, unlike conventional superconductors, can be controlled by electrostatic gates. Here, we demonstrate nanoscale weak links connecting superconducting leads, all within a single material, SrTiO 3 . Ionic liquid gating accumulates carriers in the leads, and local electrostatic gates are tuned to open the weak link. These devices behave as superconducting quantum point contacts with a quantized critical supercurrent. This is a milestone toward establishing SrTiO 3 as a single-material platform for mesoscopic superconducting transport experiments that also intrinsically contains the necessary ingredients to engineer topological superconductivity.

Nonreciprocal Supercurrents in a Field-Free Graphene Josephson Triode

Superconducting diodes are proposed non-reciprocal circuit elements that should exhibit nondissipative transport in one direction while being resistive in the opposite direction. Multiple examples of such devices have emerged in the past couple of years, however their efficiency is typically limited, and most of them require magnetic field to function. Here we present a device achieving efficiencies upwards of 90% while operating at zero field. Our samples consist of a network of three graphene Josephson junctions linked by a common superconducting island, to which we refer as a Josephson triode. The triode is tuned by applying a control current to one of the contacts, thereby breaking the time-reversal symmetry of the current flow. The triode’s utility is demonstrated by rectifying a small (tens of nA amplitude) applied square wave. Finally, we speculate that devices of this type could be realistically employed in the modern quantum circuits.

Variation in supercurrent connectivity and vortex pinning of state-of-the-art pulsed laser deposited RE Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7- x coated conductors

REBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x (REBCO, RE: rare earth) coated conductors (CCs) suffer from great critical current I c differences between different manufacturers, I c variations within individual manufacturers, and often significant lengthwise fluctuations. The understanding of such variations is complicated by the lack of a direct correlation between I c and the critical current density J c . In fact, although J c is the fundamental property determined by the local vortex pinning landscape, I c is often limited by variable current blocking mechanisms. An important practical complexity is commercial practices of performing J c and I c evaluations based on I c at 77 K and self-field (sf), where connectivity variation dominates over vortex pinning variations. However, at higher fields and lower temperatures, vortex pinning becomes more complex and highly variable, making predictions of I c and J c at arbitrary temperature T, magnetic field H, and field orientation θ, quite uncertain. To address some aspects of this problem, we conducted detailed spool-to-spool performance characterization on recently manufactured REBCO CCs. Despite J c (77 K, sf) varies by only ∼11%, J c (77 K, 1 T) of its minimum and maximum (for H//ab-plane) show variations of ∼21% and ∼32%, respectively. This emphasizes the shortcoming in using J c (77 K, sf) as parameter for evaluating even the low field performance. An even more remarkable spool-to-spool J c variation of ∼68% was observed at 20 K and 15 T for H//ab-plane. To identify the origin of such lack of reproducibility we performed microstructural characterizations, which revealed, within the REBCO layer, large variation in the density of copper oxide (CuO x ) particles ranging from 0.1 to 2 μm in size. We believe that they play a decisive role in reducing the effective cross-section of the REBCO layer by not simply blocking current themselves, but also by nucleating off-axis REBCO grains, whose misoriented grain boundaries adversely impact REBCO grain-to-grain connectivity. The REBCO growth associated with high density CuO x particles also leads to the more disordered spatial arrangement of BaHfO 3 precipitate arrays, which, when self-aligning along the ab-planes, generate stronger pinning enhancing J c (H//ab) at all temperatures. In this way, we established that variations of both connectivity and vortex pinning are thus directly coupled. Our results also explain why the so-called ‘lift-factor’, typically defined by the ratio between I c (T, H) and I c (77 K, sf), frequently turns out to be unreliable.

Paramagnetic Precipitates May Raise Supercurrent

Addition of Mn to Ti/Nb superconducting alloy increases critical current. Adding Mn to Ti/Nb alloy has little effect on major superconducting phase, but confers strong paramagnetic susceptibility on alpha-phase particles. beta-phase particles become stronger flux pinners, resulting in increase in critical current.

Self-Field-Induced Josephson Diode Effect

Josephson diodes are of interest for nonlinear superconducting circuit elements, which have many applications such as in solid-state qubit readout and coupling. Many different mechanisms can give rise to Josephson diode effects (JDEs). In this work, we investigate JDEs generated by the self-field of the supercurrent in the junction. To this end, we experimentally investigate JDEs in the supercurrent quantum interference patterns of planar hybrid Josephson junctions, composed of a cadmium arsenide thin film interfaced with a conventional superconductor. A model that includes the supercurrent self-field accurately describes the experimental observations. We show that self-field-induced JDEs are generally expected in planar junctions in perpendicular magnetic fields, even in cases of symmetric and uniform junctions, as long as they exhibit sufficiently large critical currents. Here, we discuss the tunability of self-field-induced JDEs via the supercurrent density and other parameters.

Induced superconductivity in the two-dimensional topological insulator phase of cadmium arsenide

Hybrid structures between conventional, s-wave superconductors, and two-dimensional topological insulators (2D TIs) are a promising route to topological superconductivity. Here, we investigate planar Josephson junctions fabricated from hybrid structures that use thin films of cadmium arsenide (Cd3As2) as the 2D TI material. Measurements of superconducting interference patterns in a perpendicular magnetic field are used to extract information about the spatial distribution of the supercurrent. We show that the interference patterns are distinctly different in junctions with and without mesa-isolation. In mesa-defined junctions, the bulk of the 2D TI appears to be almost completely shunted by supercurrent flowing along the edges, whereas the supercurrent is much more uniform across the junction when the Cd3As2 film extends beyond the device. We discuss the possible origins of the observed behaviors.

Giant microwave absorption in s- and d- wave superconductors

We discuss a new mechanism of microwave absorption in s- and d-wave superconductors, which arises in the presence of a dc supercurrent in the system. It produces a contribution to the ac conductivity that is proportional to the inelastic quasiparticle relaxation time. This contribution also determines the supercurrent dependence of the conductivity. It may significantly exceed the conventional contribution because in typical superconductors the inelastic relaxation time is several orders of magnitude longer than the elastic one. We show that the aforementioned contribution to the conductivity may be expressed in terms of the single particle density of states in superconductors in the presence of a dc supercurrent. Our results may enable determination of the inelastic relaxation time in superconductors from microwave absorption measurements.

Debye mechanism of giant microwave absorption in superconductors

Here, we discuss a novel mechanism of microwave absorption in superconductors, which is similar to the Debye absorption mechanism in molecular gases. The contribution of this mechanism to the ac conductivity is proportional to the inelastic quasiparticle relaxation time $τ_{\text{in}}$ rather than the elastic one $τ_{\text{el}}$ and therefore it can be much larger than the conventional one. The Debye contribution to the linear conductivity arises only in the presence of a dc supercurrent in the system and its magnitude depends strongly on the orientation of the microwave field relative to the supercurrent. The Debye contribution to the nonlinear conductivity exists even in the absence of dc supercurrent, and it is proportional to $τ_{\text{in}}$. Therefore the nonlinear threshold is anomalously low. Microwave absorption measurements may provide direct information about $τ_{\text{in}}$ in superconductors.

Current-enabled optical conductivity of superconductors

In most superconductors, optical excitations require impurity scattering or the presence of multiple bands. This is because in clean single-band superconductors, the combination of particle-hole and inversion symmetries prevents momentum-conserving transitions. In this Letter we show how the flow of supercurrent can lead to new contributions to optical conductivity. As the supercurrent breaks inversion symmetry, transitions across the superconducting gap become allowed even in clean superconductors and dominate over impurity-induced contributions for energies comparable to the gap width. Further, the response is dependent on the nature of the underlying normal state as well as on the type of superconducting order. Use of an external magnetic field to produce a screening supercurrent with controllable magnitude and direction, enables a detailed investigation of the superconducting state, allowing determination of the gap symmetry in unconventional superconductors for which other techniques have not been practicable.

Josephson currents in neutron stars

We demonstrate that the interface between S-wave and P-wave paired superfluids in neutron stars induces a neutron supercurrent, a charge-neutral analog of the Josephson junction effect in electronic superconductors. The proton supercurrent entrainment by the neutron superfluid generates, in addition to the neutral supercurrent, a charged current across the interface. Beyond this stationary effect, the motion of the neutron vortex lines responding to secular changes in the neutron star’s rotation rate induces a time-dependent oscillating Josephson current across this interface when proton flux tubes are dragged along with them. We show that such motion produces radiation from the interface once clusters of proton flux tubes intersect the interface. The power of radiation exceeds by orders of magnitude the Ohmic dissipation of currents in neutron stars. As a result, this effect appears to be phenomenologically significant enough to heat the star and alter its cooling rate during the photon cooling era.

Fun with F24

We study some special features of F 24 , the holomorphic c = 12 superconformal field theory (SCFT) given by 24 chiral free fermions. We construct eight different Lie superalgebras of “physical” states of a chiral superstring compactified on F 24 , and we prove that they all have the structure of Borcherds-Kac-Moody superalgebras. This produces a family of new examples of such superalgebras. The models depend on the choice of an \( \mathcal{N} \) = 1 supercurrent on F 24 , with the admissible choices labeled by the semisimple Lie algebras of dimension 24. We also discuss how F 24 , with any such choice of supercurrent, can be obtained via orbifolding from another distinguished c = 12 holomorphic SCFT, the \( \mathcal{N} \) = 1 supersymmetric version of the chiral CFT based on the E 8 lattice.
