Substituent effect on napthodithiophene-fused porphyrins: Understanding the unusual trend of fluorescence quantum yield quenching

A series of π-extended porphyrins containing thiophene units was prepared to investigate an unusual trend observed in the fluorescence quantum yield of naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-fused porphyrins. Monobenzoporphyrins carrying 2-thiophenyl (vinyl thiophene porphyrin) groups (2VTP, 2VTBr and Br2VTP) (numbering 2 and 3 refers to the position of sulfur on the thiophene ring) were synthesized through a Heck-based cascade reaction followed by a newly developed bromination method. These were converted to naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-fused porphyrin derivatives (FBr2VTP and F2VTBr) via ring closure with an intramolecular Scholl reaction. Increasingly larger Stokes shifts with a higher number of bromo groups were observed in the unfused π-extended molecular systems, reflecting the heavy atom effect. Fluorescence spectroscopy further confirmed the unusual trend seen in the previous work: structural rigidification in naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-fused porphyrins leads to longer fluorescence lifetimes but unexpectedly lowers the quantum yield. Adding one bromo group to the naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene unit does not change this trend. Furthermore, the presence of two bromo groups prevents the quantum yield from dropping. DFT, TDDFT, and NICS analyses suggest a drastic change in aromaticity in the pyrrole ring where the naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene is fused in FBr2VTP, which might contribute to the quantum yield reductions.

f-Element complexes with benzyl and cyclohexyl substituted trihydroborates

Actinide complexes containing the simplest borohydrides (BH 4 ) 1- and (MeBH 3 ) 1- can exhibit remarkably highly volatility, which creates unique hazards and handling challenges, especially when making measurements on solid samples under vacuum. Here we describe efforts to prepare new actinide borohydride complexes with attenuated volatility by adding bulkier benzyl (Bn) and cyclohexyl (Cy) substituents to boron. Reactions of ThCl 4 , UI 3 (thf) 4 , and NdI 3 with the mixed alkali metal salt Li/K(BnBH 3 )(thf) n yielded Th(BnBH 3 ) 4 (thf) 2 , U(BnBH 3 ) 4 (thf) 2 , and K[Nd(BnBH 3 ) 4 ], respectively. Notable amongst these, the reaction with UI 3 (thf) 4 proceeds via oxidation of U(III) to U(IV) despite the presence of reducing borohydride ligands. Similarly, reactions of the same metal halides with four equivalents of Li(CyBH 3 )(Et 2 O) n yielded Th(CyBH 3 ) 4 , U(CyBH 3 ) 4 (thf) 2 , and [Li(Et 2 O) 3 ][Nd(CyBH 3 ) 4 ]. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the M(BnBH 3 ) 4 (thf) 2 complexes with M = Th and U confirmed their formulations. Furthermore, the complexes have approximate D 2d point group symmetry and adopt bicapped hexagonal antiprismatic coordination geometries with axial thf ligands and κ 3 -BnBH 3 ligands bound in the equatorial plane. K[Nd(BnBH 3 ) 4 ] and [Li(Et 2 O) 3 ][Nd(CyBH 3 ) 4 ], which were prepared for comparison to U(III) complexes that were unsuccessfully targeted, were also structurally characterized to reveal complex anions with tetrahedral arrangements of trihydroborate ligands bound to Nd(III). Crystals obtained for Th(CyBH 3 ) 4 and U(CyBH 3 ) 4 (thf) 2 were not suitable for XRD studies, but 1 H and 11 B NMR spectra were consistent with their formulations. Collectively, these complexes represent rare examples of structurally characterized f-element trihydroborate complexes with carbon substituents other than methyl.

Generalizing Reversible Triplet–Triplet Energy Transfer as a Strategy to Increase Excited-State Lifetime in Copper(I) Charge-Transfer Chromophores

In this work, we generalize reversible triplet–triplet energy transfer (TTET) as a strategy to achieve long (μs range) excited-state lifetimes in copper(I) photosensitizers of the general formula Cu(RNacNac)(CN-Ar) (RNacNac is a substituted β-diketiminate and CN-Ar is an aryl isocyanide). Six new complexes are presented where the isocyanide is substituted with a triplet–acceptor moiety─anthracene, naphthalene, or phenanthrene. In-depth photophysical analysis reveals that energetic matching of the charge-transfer ( 3 CT) and acceptor-localized 3 (π→π*) states is key to achieving long triplet excited-state lifetimes via reversible TTET. With 2-isocyanoanthracene as the acceptor ligand, 3 CT and 3(π→π*) are not energetically proximate, and irreversible quenching of 3 CT occurs. With a small 0.1–0.2 eV gap between the two triplet states, luminescence originates from the 3 CT state with a moderate excited-state lifetime of 250 or 283 ns observed. As key to the success of this approach, we demonstrate that altering the N-substituent on the RNacNac ligand modulates the energy of the 3 CT state, giving three complexes where the 3 CT and 3 (π→π*) energies are perfectly matched and the excited-state lifetimes are much longer, spanning 1.9–2.7 μs. As such, the key lesson of this work is that long triplet-state lifetimes in these compounds can be achieved by proper “mixing and matching” of the RNacNac ligand, which influences the 3 CT energy, and the triplet acceptor group which dictates the energy of the 3 (π→π*) state.

Ligand‐Mediated Quantum Yield Enhancement in 1‐D Silver Organothiolate Metal–Organic Chalcogenolates

X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) microcrystallography and synchrotron single-crystal crystallography are used to evaluate the role of organic substituent position on the optoelectronic properties of metal–organic chalcogenolates (MOChas). MOChas are crystalline 1D and 2D semiconducting hybrid materials that have varying optoelectronic properties depending on composition, topology, and structure. While MOChas have attracted much interest, small crystal sizes impede routine crystal structure determination. A series of constitutional isomers where the aryl thiol is functionalized by either methoxy or methyl ester are solved by small molecule serial femtosecond X-ray crystallography (smSFX) and single crystal rotational crystallography. While all the methoxy examples have a low quantum yield (0-1%), the methyl ester in the ortho position yields a high quantum yield of 22%. Here, the proximity of the oxygen atoms to the silver inorganic core correlates to a considerable enhancement of quantum yield. Four crystal structures are solved at a resolution range of 0.8–1.0 Å revealing a collapse of the 2D topology for functional groups in the 2- and 3- positions, resulting in needle-like crystals. Further analysis using density functional theory (DFT) and many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) enables the exploration of complex excitonic phenomena within easily prepared material systems.

Polysilaketals: High‐Performance Polyether‐Based Electrolytes with Tunable Disubstituted Silane Linkers

Polymer electrolytes exhibit higher energy density and improved safety in lithium-ion batteries relative to traditionally used liquid electrolytes but are currently limited by their lower electrochemical performance. Aiming to access polymer electrolytes with competitive electrochemical properties, we developed the anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP) of cyclic silaketals to synthesize amorphous silicon-containing polyether-based electrolytes with varying substituent bulk of the general formula [OSi(R)2(CH2CH2O)2]n (R=alkyl, phenyl). As opposed to previously reported uncontrolled polycondensation routes toward low molecular weight polysilaketals, AROP allows access to targeted molecular weights above the entanglement threshold of the polymers. The polysilaketal with the lowest steric bulk (P(OSiMe,Me-2EO)) exceeds the conductivity of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), a leading polymer electrolyte. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first solid polymer electrolyte to achieve this benchmark. Steric bulk in polysilaketals was found to impart stability and two bulkier polysilaketals, P(OSiEt,Et-2EO) and P(OSiMe,Ph-2EO), exhibited higher current fractions than PEO over a wide range of salt loadings. Moreover, the efficacy of P(OSiEt,Et-2EO) was competitive with that of PEO. Taken together, the tunable and competitive electrochemical properties of polysilaketals validate the systematic incorporation of silyl groups as a strategy to access high performance polymer electrolytes.

Organo-catalyzed deamination of polystyrene sulfonamide for diverse post-polymerization modification of styrenic polymers

Post-polymerization modification allows for the incorporation of functional groups that would otherwise be incompatible with polymerization conditions, enhancing synthetic efficiency and facilitating the creation of complex polymer architectures for specialized applications, such as biomedical devices, electronics, and advanced coatings. Herein, we report a method inspired by late-stage functionalization of small molecules for the post-polymerization modification of aromatic polymers, specifically polystyrene (PS), under mild reaction conditions. First, PS was converted to polystyrene sulfonamide (PSSNH 2 ) with an 85% yield using established procedures. PSSNH 2 was subsequently transformed into a reactive sulfinate by deamination using an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyst and benzaldehyde. The catalytic process was optimized by varying catalysts, solvents, bases, temperatures, and reaction times. The highest degree of deamination was 88% with a bicyclic NHC and K 2 CO 3 base in DMSO for 18 hours at 120 °C. The reactive sulfinate was then treated with various functional reagents, resulting in a library of aromatic polymers with different substituents with high degrees of functionalization ranging from 74% to 98%. Similarly, we modified expanded PS waste with trifluorobutyl iodide with a degree of functionalization of 72%, highlighting a new avenue for plastic upgrading. This approach could be used to rapidly generate functionalized polymers from PS with potential applications, including antibacterial properties and flame retardancy.

Stabilization of [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– (X = H, F, Cl, Br) by Conjugation and Hyperconjugation Effects

The isolation of nucleophilic boron bases has led to a paradigm shift in boron chemistry. Previous studies of the bis(carbene) borylene complexes revealed that these compounds possess strong donor abilities, and their reaction inertness is due to the large steric hindrance between boron reagents and reactant. In the present study, we have theoretically studied the [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– compounds (X = H, F, Cl, Br). Their electronic structures and properties are discussed by using the NBO, LOL, and ELF methods. We found that both π-conjugation and hyperconjugation effects can effectively stabilize the substituted nucleophilic anionic boron compounds [(N 5 ) 2 BX] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 X 2 ] 2– . Substituents, especially X = H, stabilize the boron center through highly delocalized π-bonding, involving the formally “empty” in-plane p orbitals of the boron atom. While the halogen substituents have high electron withdrawal ability, leading to systems being less stable, we suggest the borinium anions [(N 5 ) 2 BH] 2– and [(N 5 ) 2 B 2 H 2 ] 2– as possible synthetic targets of novel environmentally friendly catalysts.

Univariate Prediction of Hammett Parameters and Select Relative Reaction Rates Using Loewdin Atomic Charges

Loewdin charges from density functional theory calculations were used here to obtain general, univariate linear correlations for the prediction of experimental Hammett parameters and relative reaction rates. While previous studies have established that Hirshfeld and CM5 charges perform strongly as univariate predictors, the near-ubiquitous Loewdin charges have not yet been evaluated. To this end, we assess the predictive capability of Loewdin charges for three chemical systems. First, we show that Loewdin charges outperform Hirshfeld and CM5 charges for Hammett parameter prediction. Second, we see that Loewdin charges generally perform comparably to Hirshfeld charges for predicting the relative rates of olefin cleavage by photoexcited nitroarenes. The single case of poor correlation, between relative rates and the Loewdin charges on nitrogen sites, is ameliorated when considering the net charge on the NO 2 group. Third, we show that Loewdin, Hirshfeld, and CM5 charges all perform very well for generating correlations for relative reaction rates for C–H activation of 9-(4-X-phenyl)-9H-fluorene substrates by a transition metal catalyst. The equations generated throughout the study enable the prediction of Hammett parameters and relative reaction rates. Finally, these tools can accelerate synthetic and experimental studies by enabling the in silico prediction of uncharacterized chemical properties.

A Structurally Diverse Compound Screening Library to Identify Substrates for Diamine, Polyamine, and Related Acetyltransferases

Spermidine/spermine N-acetyltransferases (SSATs) and other types of polyamine acetyltransferases (PAATs) acetylate diamines and/or polyamines. These enzymes are evolutionarily related and belong to the Gcn5-related N-acetyltransferase (GNAT) superfamily, yet we lack a fundamental understanding of their substrate specificity and/or promiscuity toward different compounds. Many of these enzymes are known or are predicted to acetylate polyamines, but in the cell there are other types of compounds that contain moieties derived from polyamines that may be the native substrates for these enzymes. To learn more about the identity of substrates that are acetylated, we selected and screened 17 different GNAT enzymes for activity toward a set of structurally diverse compounds that contained different types of amine moieties (e.g., aminopropyl, aminobutyl, etc.). These compounds included diamines, triamines, and polyamines containing primary amino groups, and they had structural diversity with variation of the chain length and presence or absence of internal amino groups and other functional groups. We found 12 of the 17 enzymes acetylated at least one of the compounds. Some enzymes were selective toward acetylating only one compound while others exhibited substrate promiscuity toward numerous compounds. Our experimental results ultimately allowed us to pinpoint specific substrates that could be further investigated to more fully understand substrate specificity versus promiscuity of GNAT enzymes and the role of acetylated small molecules in cells.
