Effects of Dimethylamino Functional Group Substitution on the Physical, Structural and Radiolytic Properties of Pyridinium Ionic Liquids

A diverse range of 4-dimethylaminopyridinium (DMAP) bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-amide ionic liquids with specific functionalities (alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxyalkyl and benzyl) were designed, characterized and compared with their pyridinium analogs in terms of their physical and radiolytic properties. The influence of the dimethylamino group on ionic liquid structure was investigated by X-ray diffraction and molecular dynamics simulations. The influence of the electron-donating ability of the dimethylamino-substituted cation is evident in the differences in the electronic density of states between the DMAP and pyridinium ILs. This leads to substantial changes in the radical transients observed in pulse radiolysis of the neat ILs. It was found that the DMAP salts were higher melting, more viscous and less conducting than their pyridinium analogs. However, the DMAP salts exhibited higher thermal stabilities and could therefore be useful for high-temperature applications.

Structural Properties of [N1888][TFSI] Ionic Liquid: A Small Angle Neutron Scattering and Polarizable Molecular Dynamics Study

In this study, we investigate the quaternary ammonium-based ionic liquid (QAIL), methyltrioctylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [N 1888 ][TFSI], utilizing small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements and polarizable molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to characterize the shortand long-range liquid structure. Scattering structure factors show signatures of three length scales in reciprocal space indicative of alternating polarity (k ~ 0.44 Å –1 ), charge (k ~ 0.75 Å –1 ), and neighboring or adjacent (k ~ 1.46 Å –1 ) domains. Excellent agreement between simulation and experimental scattering structure factors validates various simulation analyses that provide detailed atomistic characterization of the different length scale correlations. The first solvation shell structure is illustrated by obtaining radial, angular, dihedral, and combined distribution functions, where two dominant spatial motifs, N + ···N – and N + ···O – , compete for optimal packing around the polar head of the [N 1888 ] + cation. Intermediate and long-range structures are governed by the balance between local electroneutrality and octyl chain networking, respectively. By computing the charge-correlation structure factor, S ZZ , and the spatial extent of the octyl chain network using graph theory, the bulk-phase structure of [N 1888 ][TFSI] is characterized in terms of electrostatic screening and apolar domain formation length scales.

Mechanochemical Solid Form Screening of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks Using Structure-Directing Liquid Additives

We demonstrate a systematic application of the mechanochemical liquid-assisted grinding (LAG) methodology to screen for forms of zinc imidazolate (ZnIm 2 ), of fundamental importance as the simplest member of the zeolitic imidazolate framework materials family. The exploration of 45 different liquid additives, selected based on their molecular structure and physicochemical properties has resulted in eight different ZnIm 2 topological forms, appearing in 13 crystallographically distinct solid forms (including two previously unknown forms of the crb (BCT) topology), amorphous phases, and the interrupted moc-Zn 4 Im 8 HIm. All prepared topological forms were also explored computationally, using dispersion-corrected periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations, enabling the rationalization of screening outcomes, and setting the stage for future prediction of additive-directed metal–organic framework (MOF) synthesis. This first systematic exploration of LAG in screening for three-dimensional MOFs demonstrates the potential of the liquid additive to not only accelerate materials synthesis, but also to direct it toward topologically different MOFs. The discovery of novel forms of a material that already exhibits at least 21 crystallographically and functionally different forms provides a strong testimony on the power of mechanochemistry in metal–organic materials discovery.

The Molecular Structures of Liquid and Glassy Nifedipine and Felodipine and Their Incorporation into PVP

Background: Amorphous drug formulations are commonly used to improve the solubility and bioavailability of poorly soluble molecular pharmaceuticals, yet less is known about their molecular conformations and local bonding interactions than their crystalline phases. Methods: High-energy X-ray diffraction structure factor measurements have been made on liquid and glassy nifedipine (NIF), felodipine (FEL), NIF 1:3 polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and FEL 1:3 PVP wt.% mixtures. The corresponding X-ray pair distribution functions have been interpreted using empirical potential structure refinement using different models and density functional theory conformer calculations. Results: In both NIF and FEL, the NH···O inter-molecular hydrogen bonds between the pyridyl nitrogen and ester carbonyls are found to be considerably weaker than those observed in the crystalline polymorphs. For nifedipine, it is proposed that either inter-molecular NH…ON nitro bonds are present and/or a fraction (<20%) of conformational changes, with the aryl ring flipped, occur in the liquid state. For felodipine, the models indicate significant disorder associated with the methyl and ethyl side chains in the liquid state, with the main peak intensity at 3.0 Å arising from intra-molecular Cl-Cl atom pairs. When nifedipine molecules are incorporated into PVP, our models show they possess stronger NH···O bonds to the PVP polymer than felodipine molecules, which have stronger affinity for bonding to the polymer than to other felodipine molecules. Conclusions: The amorphous forms of both NIF and FEL show much weaker hydrogen bonding than found in their crystalline phases. Liquid NIF also exhibits configurations which are not observed in the crystal phases.

Electronic structure Fermi liquid theory of high Tc superconductors: Comparison of predictions with experiments

Predictions of local density functional (LDF) calculations of the electronic structure and transport properties of high T(sub c) superconductors are presented. As evidenced by the excellent agreement with both photoemission and positron annihilation experiments, a Fermi liquid nature of the 'normal' state of the high T(sub c) superconductors become clear for the metallic phase of these oxides. In addition, LDF predictions on the normal state transport properties are qualitatively in agreement with experiments on single crystals. It is emphasized that the signs of the Hall coefficients for the high T(sub c) superconductors are not consistent with the types of dopants (e.g., electron-doped or hole-doped) but are determined by the topology of the Fermi surfaces obtained from the LDF calculations.

Coupling between structure and liquids in a parallel stage space shuttle design

A study was conducted to determine the influence of liquid propellants on the dynamic loads for space shuttle vehicles. A parallel-stage configuration model was designed and tested to determine the influence of liquid propellants on coupled natural modes. A forty degree-of-freedom analytical model was also developed for predicting these modes. Currently available analytical models were used to represent the liquid contributions, even though coupled longitudinal and lateral motions are present in such a complex structure. Agreement between the results was found in the lower few modes.

Implications of liquid-liquid distribution coefficients to mineral-liquid partitioning

In order to evaluate the influence of a silicate liquid structure on mineral-liquid partitioning, element partitioning data is obtained for coexisting anhydrous immiscible granitic and ferrobasaltic magmas. It is found that: (1) mineral-liquid distribution coefficients indicate the competition of crystal and liquid for cation incorporation, (2) increased polymerization of the residual liquid during crystal-liquid fractionation increases the mineral-liquid distribution coefficients for high-charge-density cations, (3) incompatible element ratios of low- and high-charge-density cations may vary during crystal-liquid fractionation because of changes in the melt composition and structure, (4) relative solubilities of REE's in melts do not vary with melt polymerization, (5) the changes of Sm/Eu ratios during crystal-liquid fractionation depend on the melt composition, and (6) minor components and volatiles can significantly influence the silicate melt structure and the mineral-liquid distribution coefficients.

Ionization by XFEL radiation produces distinct structure in liquid water

In the warm dense matter (WDM) regime, where condensed, gas, and plasma phases coexist, matter frequently exhibits unusual properties that cannot be described by contemporary theory. Experiments reporting phenomena in WDM are therefore of interest to advance our physical understanding of this regime, which is found in dwarf stars, giant planets, and fusion ignition experiments. Using 7.1 keV X-ray free electron laser radiation (nominally 5×10 5 J/cm 2 ), we produced and probed transient WDM in liquid water. Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) from the probe reveals a new ~9 Å structure that forms within 75 fs. By 100 fs, the WAXS peak corresponding to this new structure is of comparable magnitude to the ambient water peak, which is attenuated. Simulations suggest that the experiment probes a superposition of two regimes. In the first, fluences expected at the focus severely ionize the water, which becomes effectively transparent to the probe. In the second, out-of-focus pump radiation produces O 1+ and O 2+ ions, which rearrange due to Coulombic repulsion over 10 s of fs. Our simulations account for a decrease in ambient water signal and an increase in low-angle X-ray scattering but not the experimentally observed 9 Å feature, presenting a new challenge for theory.

Electronic structure Fermi liquid theory of high T(sub c) superconductors: Comparison with experiments

For years, there has been controversy on whether the normal state of the Cu-oxide superconductors is a Fermi liquid or some other exotic ground state. However, some experimentalists are clarifying the nature of the normal state of the high T(sub c) superconductors by surmounting the experimental difficulties in producing clean, well characterized surfaces so as to obtain meaningful high resolved photoemission data, which agrees with earlier positron-annihilation experiments. The experimental work on high resolution angle resolved photoemission by Campuzano et al. and positron-annihilation studies by Smedskjaer et al. has verified the calculated Fermi surfaces in YBa2Cu3O7 superconductors and has provided evidence for the validity of the energy band approach. Similar good agreement was found for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 by Olson et al. As a Fermi liquid (metallic) nature of the normal state of the high T(sub c) superconductors becomes evident, these experimental observations have served to confirm the predictions of the local density functional calculations and hence the energy band approach as a valid natural starting point for further studies of their superconductivity.

Stabilization of Miscible Aqueous Phases via Diffusion‐Controlled Multifunctional Nanoparticle‐Ligand Complexation

Liquid‐in‐liquid structuring by harnessing miscible aqueous domains can be achieved by inducing thermodynamically defined phase separation using aqueous solutions of incompatible solutes, where immiscibility is dictated by the concentrations of the solutes. For instance, in aqueous two‐phase systems (ATPSs), the interfacial tension between the two different aqueous solutions is so small that it stabilizes the phase‐separated domains, but not their shape, thus falling short of designing tunable, robust structures. Here, we introduce a diffusion‐controlled strategy that enables liquid‐in‐liquid compartmentalization absent a thermodynamically defined interface or bulk liquid‐liquid phase separation using a barrier formed in situ at the initial contact boundary of an aqueous dispersion of multifunctional nanoparticles and a solution of multifunctional ligands in pure water or a water/alcohol mixture. The nanoparticles and ligands are entropically driven to disperse uniformly but interact at the initial contact boundary more rapidly than bulk mixing, forming a layer that establishes a barrier akin to a semi‐permeable membrane and allows the formation of tubular compartments. A wealth of opportunities is enabled by the proposed technique, where examples in separations, soft electronic devices, and ultralight porous electromagnetic shielding materials are shown.

Structure of Complex Liquid–Liquid Extraction Organic Phases for Rare Earth Separations

Complex, multicomponent liquids with hierarchical structure and phase transitions are encountered in many natural and industrial processes, including in chemical separations. One notable example is aggregation and organic phase splitting in liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) of metal ions. While these two phenomena that have long been closely associated, a mechanistic link between mesoscale structure and the capacity-limiting organic phase splitting remains elusive due to complexity of these systems. Here, in this study, we combine small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS), and molecular dynamics simulation to reveal a comprehensive picture of structure at the nano- and mesoscale in these complex solutions. For the representative case of rare earth extraction from an acidic aqueous phase by a malonamide extractant in dodecane, we investigate a wide range of process-relevant extractant and acid concentrations to provide a complete picture of how aggregation depends on composition. We decompose organic phase structure from SAXS into two contributions, which together can capture the scattering at all compositions: composition fluctuations described by the Ornstein–Zernike equation at low wavenumber Q, and nanostructure modeled by a “pre-peak” at intermediate Q. The former contains information about the thermodynamics of demixing, while the latter reflects nanoscopic self-assembly of the extractant and extracted solutes. While fluctuations have typically not been considered in the literature, we find they in fact dominate the total structure for nearly all practical conditions. As only the fluctuations have a strong temperature response, we confirm this attribution with temperature-dependent SAXS measurements, including for extracted europium nitrate complexes. SAXS and XPCS measurements near the critical point find static and dynamic scaling consistent with theory. Overall, this new paradigm for understanding LLE organic phases connects composition, nanoscale, and mesoscale structuring to phase behavior, providing both a comprehensive picture of solution structure and a quantitative link between aggregation and third phase formation.

Some results from 1/8-scale Shuttle model vibration studies

Highlights of experimental and analytical vibration studies of a 1/8-scale structural dynamic model of the Space Shuttle are presented. The Space Shuttle is a launch vehicle with elements assembled in an asymmetric manner. Responses of the assembled vehicle are characterized by directional coupling and high modal density at low frequencies. Effects of distortion of structure near element interfaces are shown to be significant and predictable with highly detailed mathematical models. Acquisition of modal data by single-point random excitation is shown to be viable for these complex structures. Element studies reveal large liquid-structure interactions and a wide range of structural damping.

Structures of cyano-biphenyl liquid crystals

The structures of p-alkyl- p'-cyano- bicyclohexanes, C(n)H(2n+1) (C6H10)(C6H10) CN (n-CCH), and p-alkyl- p'-cyano- biphenyls, C(n)H(2n+1) (C6H4)(C6H4) CN (n-CBP), were studied. It is convenient to use an x ray image intensification device to search for symmetric x ray diffraction patterns. Despite the similarities in molecular structures of these compounds, very different crystal structures were found. For the smectic phase of 2CCH, the structure is close to rhombohedral with threefold symmetry. In contrast, the structure is close to hexagonal close-packed with two molecules per unit cell for 4CCH. Since intermolecular forces may be quite weak for these liquid crystals systems, it appears that crystal structures change considerably when the alkyl chain length is slightly altered. Different structures were also found in the crystalline phase of n-CBP for n = 6 to 9. For n = 7 to 9, the structures are close to monclinic. The structures are reminiscent of the smectic-A liquid crystal structures with the linear molecules slightly tilted away from the c-axis. In contrast, the structure is quite different for n = 6 with the molecules nearly perpendicular to the c-axis.
