Phasor-Based Control for Scalable Solar PV Integration

This project demonstrated that solar PV can be recruited to stabilize the grid, smooth out disturbances, manage power flows, and assist circuit switching operations. It developed a radically new, layered control framework for Distributed Energy Resources (DER) to act in response to real-time, measured conditions on their local distribution circuit, rather than waiting for a price signal to indicate preferred behavior. By enabling resources to act as good citizens on the electric grid, Phasor-Based Control (PBC) facilitates arbitrarily high solar penetration levels.

Managing Solar Photovoltaic Integration in the Western United States Appendix: Reference and High Solar Photovoltaic Scenarios for Three Regions [Slides]

This slide deck is an appendix to a paper series that examines potential challenges related to planning future power systems with higher solar photovoltaic (PV) penetrations. The series uses the western U.S. power system for these investigations because it is a region the authors and their colleagues have already extensively studied. We are therefore well-suited to analyze even higher PV penetrations and then examine the results in multiple models to determine whether our current approaches are missing key details that only emerge at higher PV penetrations. This deck details the systems underlying those analyses and how they were modeled using the Resource Planning Model (RPM), a capacity expansion modeling tool. We examine both Western Interconnection-wide and regional results for three regions in the Western U.S. with significantly different existing power systems and connections to neighboring regions; this provides a more balanced picture as to how power systems with high PV penetration might emerge in different contexts and what the resulting grid challenges, if any, might be.

Low-cost Manufacturing of Semitransparent CdTe PV for Building Integration

Solar has been demonstrated to be a robust renewable energy source, constituting a significant portion of the United States’ renewable energy portfolio. Despite its growth across residential, commercial, and utility sectors over the past decades, it remains a small fraction of the overall energy infrastructure. Challenges persist in fully harnessing solar power to meet the nation's escalating energy demands. Among these challenges lies the hurdle of efficiently distributing large quantities of solar-generated electricity to densely populated regions with the highest energy needs and costs. Traditional utility-scale arrays demand extensive land, a luxury often unavailable in metropolitan areas. Consequently, installations must be situated at a distance, necessitating additional infrastructure for electricity transmission to service areas. While metropolitan landscapes lack sprawling open spaces suitable for conventional utility-scale solar deployment, they offer a different resource: windows. Semitransparent photovoltaic window technology has the potential to not only bolster the grid's energy capacity, but to also provide HVAC and economic advantages to building owners. However, commercial availability of building-integrated photovoltaic windows remains limited. Silicon based photovoltaics currently dominate the solar market but adapting them for use in windows poses a variety of engineering and economic challenges such as relatively low power density, high costs associated with custom manufacturing, and aesthetic considerations. Addressing these challenges, this project explored the use of laser ablation patterning to manufacture cost-effective, high-efficiency, semitransparent Cadmium Telluride photovoltaic modules. Results showcased the potential of this methodology in developing photovoltaic windows and other innovative semitransparent PV applications. The ablation manufacturing technique demonstrated great versatility in achieving different patterns and levels of visible light transmission, and the power loss due to ablation was nearly directly proportional to the amount of material removed. Furthermore, the manufacturing process for Cadmium Telluride modules already has established advantages in material and energy efficiency, and the conversion of a standard submodule to semitransparent essentially requires a single additional process step, ensuring scalability. It is important to note that during this work, Toledo Solar experienced substantial organizational upheaval stemming from a lawsuit with First Solar. An external investigation led the board of directors to remove and replace the previous management team, and several other members of the staff elected to depart as well, including the then acting Principle Investigator on this project. The remaining Toledo Solar team attempted to recover from the disruption and deliver on the remaining tasks, but upon its own review, the Department of Energy ruled the project in default and terminated the contract in December 2023.

South Asia Group for Energy - Bhutan

Bhutan's electricity system is already low-carbon through the use of hydropower. However, generation from hydroelectric plants is reduced during the dry winter months and will be impacted by climate change and other extreme weather events. Bhutan is mitigating these risks by diversifying their energy mix with clean energy resources. Bhutan is exploring photovoltaic (PV) solar energy development to enhance its energy system's overall resilience. To ensure efficient grid planning and solar integration, Bhutan's power generator, Druk Green Power Corporation, and the transmission and distribution utility, Bhutan Power Corporation, are partnering with the South Asia Group for Energy (SAGE) to develop their solar capabilities, integrate solar energy into the grid, and strengthen Bhutan's energy infrastructure and efficiency.

Integrated Solar-Driven Device with a Front Surface Semitransparent Catalysts for Unassisted CO 2 Reduction

Monolithic integrated photovoltaic-driven electrochemical (PV-EC) artificial photosynthesis is reported for unassisted CO 2 reduction. The PV-EC structures employ triple junction photoelectrodes with a front mounted semitransparent catalyst layer as a photocathode. The catalyst layer is comprised of an array of microscale triangular metallic prisms that redirect incoming light toward open areas of the photoelectrode to reduce shadow losses. Full wave electromagnetic simulations of the prism array (PA) structure guide optimization of geometries and length scales. An integrated device is constructed with Ag catalyst prisms covering 35% of the surface area. The experimental device has close to 80% of the transmittance with a catalytic surface area equivalent 144% of the glass substrate area. Experimentally this photocathode demonstrates a direct solar-to-CO conversion efficiency of 5.9% with 50 h stability. Selective electrodeposition of Cu catalysts onto the surface of the Ag triangular prisms allows CO2 conversion to higher value products enabling demonstration of a solar-to-C 2+ product efficiency of 3.1%. This design featuring structures that have a semitransparent catalyst layer on a PV-EC cell is a general solution to light loss by shadowing for front surface mounted metal catalysts, and opens a route for the development of artificial photosynthesis based on this scalable design approach.

Frequency Stability Enhancement in a Fully Solar Power Grid: A Case Study on the Saudi Model

Recently, renewable energy sources (RES) such as solar photovoltaic (PV) have been recognized for their significant potential. Several studies have explored the issue of frequency stability with high RES penetration. A significant observation related to this issue is the decline in the weighted short circuit ratio (WSCR), which has the potential to adversely affect system stability. This research uniquely focuses on the gradual transition of the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) system to a fully integrated solar PV grid, offering insight and methodology that can be adapted for other power systems. While a variety of mitigation methods are available, synchronous condensers (SC) were used in this study to stabilize grid frequency, and their implementation has been shown to improve the overall performance of the system. In response to the observed decline in WSCR, a comprehensive short circuit analysis was applied across all regions in the Saudi power grid model to evaluate the reduction in short circuit power and highlight areas requiring enhancement. Finally, scenarios illustrating frequency response with a gradual increase in SCR were analyzed, with the objective of establishing a stable, fully solar PV power system that is resilient to sudden power grid disturbances.

Managing Solar Photovoltaic Integration in the Western United States: Power System Flexibility Requirements and Supply

As penetrations of variable renewable energy generation technologies such as wind and solar photovoltaics (PV) continue to increase across the United States, greater uncertainty and variability in the net load often lead to a concern about how power systems may adapt. Managing the system net load (i.e., load minus contribution from variable generation technologies) may become more challenging with increasing variable generation, as the magnitude and frequency of net ramps increase. However, there is inherent flexibility in power systems through the conventional generator fleet (under least-cost unit commitment and economic dispatch), less-conventional generation sources (e.g., storage, demand response, concentrating solar power with thermal energy storage), and imports and exports with neighbors. In this analysis, we create an open-source tool to analyze the flexibility of the results of a specific commercial unit commitment and economic dispatch tool (PLEXOS), but the code can be applied generically as well. The tool assesses the flexibility requirements (or demand) of a system through a net load analysis. The constraints and limitations of each generator are then considered to determine the availability (or supply) of flexibility. Then, the supply and demand of flexibility are compared to gain a more complete picture of potential flexibility concerns. We apply this open-source tool to high-penetration PV scenarios constructed for three focus regions in the western United States defined using the Resource Planning Model (RPM) capacity expansion modeling tool: RPM-OR, RPM-CO, and RPM-AZ. Generally, we find few flexibility concerns, as the western United States represents a large and interconnected power system with significant inherent flexibility. In addition, the PV scenarios we analyzed are overbuilt on capacity, leaving plenty of ramping ability on the system. We do find that for each focus region, the impact of imports on meeting ramping needs is essential. This means the PV integration in each focus region impacts the entire rest of the system. Each system has different dominant sources of flexibility. The conventional generator fleet (especially coal and gas combined-cycle technologies) as well as less-conventional sources such as storage are all shown to be important sources of flexibility. The scenarios evaluated here were designed to study the planning and operations impact of high solar penetration in each of three focus regions. However, none of the three focus regions likely will deploy PV in isolation, meaning the ability of imports and exports to provide flexibility may be considerably different in scenarios with strong PV deployment in every region. Overall, we intend that the framework we present here will be useful in future analysis of other system evolutions to identify whether and how flexibility may constrain the successful deployment of variable generation technologies.

Assessing geothermal/solar hybridization – Integrating a solar thermal topping cycle into a geothermal bottoming cycle with energy storage

Geothermal and concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies typically use heat at different temperatures in their commercial deployments. This enables a technically viable hybridization of a solar topping cycle and a geothermal bottoming cycle at locations where both resources are available. In this article, an underperforming geothermal power system based at Burley, Idaho is used as a baseline to investigate the technical and economic potential of such a hybrid cycle. A direct thermal energy storage (TES) system is also integrated to overcome the intermittency of the solar resource. Design and off-design behavior of key components are modelled to simulate the annual performance of the hybrid system on an hourly basis. The sizing of the solar field and thermal storage is investigated and is seen to significantly impact the annual electricity generation and efficiency. Various cost scenarios for the solar field and thermal energy storage are investigated. An economic metric - levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) - is used to optimize the solar field sizing and TES capacity. The hybrid plant converts the additional solar heat input into additional work with an efficiency of 32.9%. Retrofitting a geothermal plant with solar and eight hours of energy storage can achieve an LCOE of 0.136 $/kWhe in current cost scenarios and 0.081 $/kWhe in a future cost reduction scenario. Although the hybrid system cannot directly compete with current PV systems without batteries, it has an LCOE 32% lower than that of a PV-battery system. This paper provides insights into the research and development of the future grid with a high renewable energy penetration and encourages further study of energy hybridization for improved efficiencies and economics.
