NASA's Black Marble Nighttime Lights Product Suite

NASA's Black Marble nighttime lights product suite (VNP46) is available at 500 meters resolution since January 2012 with data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Platform (SNPP). The retrieval algorithm, developed and implemented for routine global processing at NASA's Land Science Investigator-led Processing System (SIPS), utilizes all high-quality, cloud-free, atmospheric-, terrain-, vegetation-, snow-, lunar-, and stray light-corrected radiances to estimate daily nighttime lights (NTL) and other intrinsic surface optical properties. Key algorithm enhancements include: (1) lunar irradiance modeling to resolve non-linear changes in phase and libration; (2) vector radiative transfer and lunar bidirectional surface anisotropic reflectance modeling to correct for atmospheric and BRDF (Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function) effects; (3) geometric-optical and canopy radiative transfer modeling to account for seasonal variations in NTL; and (4) temporal gap-filling to reduce persistent data gaps. Extensive benchmark tests at representative spatial and temporal scales were conducted on the VNP46 time series record to characterize the uncertainties stemming from upstream data sources. Initial validation results are presented together with example case studies illustrating the scientific utility of the products. This includes an evaluation of temporal patterns of NTL dynamics associated with urbanization, socioeconomic variability, cultural characteristics, and displaced populations affected by conflict. Current and planned activities under the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Human Planet Initiative are aimed at evaluating the products at different geographic locations and time periods representing the full range of retrieval conditions.

Towards Disentangling Lockdown-Driven Air Quality Changes in the Northeastern U.S.

In the absence of preventive therapies or effective treatment for most cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), governments worldwide have sought to minimize person-to-person severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission through a variety of lock-down measures and social distancing policies. Extreme events like the COVID-19 pandemic present a tremendous opportunity to make quantitative connections between changes in anthropogenic forcing, social and economic activity, and the related Earth system response. In this comment, we examine air quality impacts associated with pandemic response measures in the Northeastern United States.

The Precipitation Rate Retrieval Algorithms for the GPM Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar

In this paper, precipitation rate retrieval algorithms for the Global Precipitation Measurement mission's Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) are developed. The DPR consists of a Ku-band radar (KuPR; 13.6 GHz) and a Ka-band radar (KaPR; 35.5 GHz). For the KuPR, an algorithm similar to the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission's Precipitation Radar algorithm is developed, with the relation between precipitation rate R and massweighted mean diameter D m (R−D m relation) replacing the relation between the specific attenuation k and effective radar reflectivity factor Z e . The R−D m relation can also be applied to the KaPR and dual-frequency algorithms. In both the single-frequency and dual-frequency algorithms, the forward retrieval method is applied with an assumed adjustment factor for the R−D m relation (ε) and the results are evaluated to select the best value of ε. The advantages of the dual-frequency algorithm are the availability of the dual-frequency surface reference technique and the ZfKa method, which is a method to use the attenuation-corrected radar reflectivity factor Z f of KaPR, to select ε as well as the possibility to selectively use measurements from KuPR or KaPR. This paper also describes the derivation of the scattering table and the R−D m relation as well as the procedure for non-uniform beam filling correction in detail. The outputs are then statistically analyzed to demonstrate algorithm performance.

Mineralogy and Surface Modification of Small Grains Recovered from the Asteroid 162173 Ryugu

Surface material on airless bodies exposed to the interplanetary space experienced the bombardment by low-energy (~1 keV/nucleon) solar wind particles and micrometeoroid impacts. These processes, alongside the resultant surface modifications, and spectral darkening and reddening are called space weathering [1]. Space weathering of the Moon and the asteroid 25143 Itokawa belonging to S-type asteroids have been investigated intensively [e.g. 1-5]. The Hayabusa 2 spacecraft returned samples from the asteroid 162173 Ryugu C-type asteroid. The Ryugu samples give us the first opportunity to investigate space weathering of C-type asteroids. The Mineralogy-Petrology Fine (M-P F or Sand) sub-team mainly investigates small grains (typically ~100 μm across). The main purposes of the M-P F sub-team are to understand the variationof mineralogy of the allocated grains and the nature of space weathering of the asteroid Ryugu. The M-P F sub-team is comprised of 51 members belonging to 25 universities and laboratories

Carbon Analytics for Net-zero Emissions Sustainable Cities

Consensus on carbon accounting approaches at city-level is lacking and analytic frameworks to systematically link carbon mitigation with the Sustainable Development Goals are limited. A new accounting approach anchored upon key physical provisioning systems can help to address these knowledge gaps and facilitate urban transitions.

Mineralogy and Space Weathering of Fine Fraction Recovered from Asteroid (162173) Ryugu

JAXA Hayabusa2 spacecraft brought back 5.4 g of samples from the near-Earth C-type asteroid (162173) Ryugu to Earth on December6th, 2020 [1]. The returned samples give us a unique opportunity to investigate material from the surface of a C-type asteroid that is expected to record space weathering. Here, we report the mineralogy of fine fraction of the Ryugu grains and a variation of their surface features related to space weathering.

Space weathering features of anhydrous minerals in fine grains from the C-type asteroid Ryugu

Materials exposed to the space environment are expected to show optically and chemically modified properties. This process is called as space weathering and is caused mainly by micrometeoroid bombardments and solar wind implantation [1]. Thus far, the space weathering of carbonaceous asteroids has not been well understood. Regolith samples were successfully recovered from C-type asteroid Ryugu by the Hayabusa mission [2]. Ryugu samples will provide insights into the ongoing space weathering of Ryugu [3]. In this study, we investigated the space weathering of anhydrous minerals including iron sulfides, magnetite, and carbonates, which are major reservoirs of volatiles including carbon, oxygen, and sulfur in Ryugu materials. We performed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission/scanning transmission electron microscopy (TEM/STEM) analysis for Ryugu samples.

Characteristics of Mineralogy and Space Weathering Observed on the Grains in the Fine Fraction Samples Returned From the C-type Asteroid Ryugu.

Samples returned from near-Earth C-type asteroid Ryugu by the JAXA Hayabusa2 spacecraft have been investigated from June, 2021. Our Min-Pet Fine ("sand") sub-team have investigated mineralogy and petrology and space weathering of grains in the fine fraction of the samples. Space weathering is alteration induced mainly by solar wind irradiation and micrometeoroid impact. Here, we report mineralogy and microstructural and chemical features related to space weathering of Ryugu grains.

Machine Vision based Sample-Tube Localization for Mars Sample Return

A potential Mars Sample Return (MSR) architecture is being jointly studied by NASA and ESA. As currently envisioned, the MSR campaign consists of a series of 3 missions: sample cache, fetch and return to Earth. In this paper, we focus on the fetch part of the MSR, and more specifically the problem of autonomously detecting and localizing sample tubes deposited on the Martian surface. Towards this end, we study two machine-vision based approaches: First, a geometrydriven approach based on template matching that uses hardcoded filters and a 3D shape model of the tube; and second, a data-driven approach based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and learned features. Furthermore, we present a large benchmark dataset of sample-tube images, collected in representative outdoor environments and annotated with ground truth segmentation masks and locations. The dataset was acquired systematically across different terrain, illumination conditions and dust-coverage; and benchmarking was performed to study the feasibility of each approach, their relative strengths and weaknesses, and robustness in the presence of adverse environmental conditions.
