Nonadiabatic transitions in Landau-Zener grids: Integrability and semiclassical theory

We demonstrate that the general model of a linearly time-dependent crossing of two energy bands is integrable. Namely, the Hamiltonian of this model has a quadratically time-dependent commuting operator. We apply this property to four-state Landau-Zener (LZ) models that have previously been used to describe the Landau-Stückelberg interferometry experiments with an electron shuttling between two semiconductor quantum dots. The integrability then leads to simple but nontrivial exact relations for the transition probabilities. In addition, the integrability leads to a semiclassical theory that provides analytical approximation for the transition probabilities in these models for all parameter values. Lastly, the results predict a dynamic phase transition, and show that similarly looking models belong to different topological classes.

Semiclassical theory of bipolaronic superconductivity in a bond-modulated electron-phonon model

We analyze the transition temperature T c of bipolaronic superconductivity in a bond Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (bond-SSH) model—also known as a bond Peierls model—where the electron hoppings are modulated by bond phonons. Using a semiclassical instanton approximation justifiable in the adiabatic limit of slow phonons, we find that the bipolaron mass is only weakly enhanced, in contrast to the typical large mass enhancement found in standard (Holstein) electron-phonon models. Specifically, in the strong coupling limit, the bipolarons can freely slide within a degenerate manifold rather than become self-trapped. A gas of these bipolarons can undergo a superfluid transition at a critical temperature for which we obtain an upper bound. We find that this bound is exponentially larger than that in the Holstein model. In conclusion, our study provides an analytical understanding of the mechanism behind the high-T c bipolaronic superconductivity numerically observed in [Phys. Rev. X 13, 011010 (2023)].

Applicability of semiclassical methods for modeling laser-enhanced fusion rates in a realistic setting

In the context of the potential laser-induced enhancement to the rates of DHe 3 and DT fusion, we discuss the frequently-used Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) method and the imaginary-time method (ITM). For static external electric fields, we find that these methods predict significant enhancement to the fusion cross section for electric-field strengths > 10 14 V/m, especially at low values (≈ keV) for the enter-of-mass (CoM) energy. When considering dynamic electric fields, this enhancement can be amplified by considering increased photon frequencies. However, we also pro- vide a review of the region of laser-parameter phase space where these semiclassical methods are applicable. Here, we conclude that this allowable region decreases for higher photon frequencies in con-junction with lower values for the electric-field strength, motivating the need for future experiments to test the predictions of these methods and their ranges of validity.

Pure quantum extension of the semiclassical Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation

The Boltzmann equation is the traditional framework in which one extends the time-dependent mean field classical description of a many-body system to include the effect of particle-particle collisions in an approximate manner. A semiclassical extension of this approach to quantum many-body systems was suggested by Uehling and Uhlenbeck in 1933 for both Fermi and Bose statistics, and many further developments of this approach are known as the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) equations. In this paper I introduce a pure quantum version of the BUU type of equations, which is mathematically equivalent to a generalized time-dependent density functional theory extended to superfluid systems. As expected, during nonequilibrium processes the quantum Boltzmann one-body entropy increases during evolution.

Semiclassical treatment of photon cascades in nuclei

Here, we present a simple semiclassical treatment of photon cascades, suitable for use in nuclear fission simulation codes. The approximation is here developed for E⁢1 and E⁢2 transitions and its quality is illustrated for a variety of two-photon cascades. Implementation of the treatment into Monte Carlo simulations would make it possible to address photon correlation observables quantitatively.

The Page curve of Hawking radiation from semiclassical geometry

We consider a gravity theory coupled to matter, where the matter has a higher-dimensional holographic dual. In such a theory, finding quantum extremal surfaces becomes equivalent to finding the RT/HRT surfaces in the higher-dimensional theory. Using this we compute the entropy of Hawking radiation and argue that it follows the Page curve, as suggested by recent computations of the entropy and entanglement wedges for old black holes. The higher-dimensional geometry connects the radiation to the black hole interior in the spirit of ER=EPR. The black hole interior then becomes part of the entanglement wedge of the radiation. Inspired by this, we propose a new rule for computing the entropy of quantum systems entangled with gravitational systems which involves searching for “islands” in determining the entanglement wedge.

Semiclassics with ’t Hooft flux background for QCD with 2-index quarks

We study quantum chromodynamics including the two-index symmetric or anti-symmetric quark (QCD(Sym/ASym)) on small $\mathbb{R}^2$× T 2 with a suitable magnetic flux. We first discuss the ’t Hooft anomaly of these theories and claim that discrete chiral symmetry should be spontaneously broken completely to satisfy the anomaly matching condition. The T 2 compactification with the magnetic flux preserves the ’t Hooft anomaly, and the 2d effective theory is constrained by the same anomaly of 4d QCD(Sym/ASym). We demonstrate the spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry using the dilute gas of center vortices, which confirms the prediction of the ’t Hooft anomaly. We also find that each vacuum maintains the charge conjugation symmetry, and this gives affirmative support for the nonperturbative large-N orientifold equivalence between QCD(Sym/ASym) and $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory.

Semiclassical model for calculating exciton and polaron pair energetics at interfaces

Exciton and polaron pair dissociation is a key functional aspect of photovoltaic devices. To improve upon the current state of interfacial transport models, we augment the existing classical models of dielectric interfaces by incorporating results from ab initio calculations, allowing us to calculate exciton and polaron binding energies more accurately. We demonstrate the predictive capabilities of this new model using two interfaces: (i) the boron subphthalocyanine chloride (SubPc) and C60 interface, which is an archetype for many organic photovoltaic devices; and (ii) pentacene and silicon (1 0 0), which represents a hybrid between organic and inorganic semiconductors. Overall, our calculations predict that the insertion of molecular dipoles at interfaces can be used for improving polaron pair dissociation and that sharp transitions in dielectric permittivity can have a stronger effect on the polaron pair dissociation than even the electron-hole Coulomb interaction.

Monte Carlo evaluation of the semiclassical multi-step direct reaction series

We show how the multi-step direct reaction series can be evaluated using Monte Carlo methods. Nucleon-nucleon collisions occur according to the random selection of a nucleon’s attenuation factor along its classical trajectory. The particles and hole excited in a collision are selected from a local Fermi distribution. We assume that the particles continue to propagate and possibly collide again before leaving the nucleus. We assume that holes collide in place, to possibly produce other particles and holes.

Driven-dissipative phase transition in a Kerr oscillator: From semiclassical PT symmetry to quantum fluctuations

We study a minimal model that has a driven-dissipative quantum phase transition, namely a Kerr non-linear oscillator subject to driving and dissipation. Using mean-field theory, exact diagonalization, and the Keldysh formalism, we analyze the critical phenomena in this system, showing which aspects can be captured by each approach and how the approaches complement each other. Then critical scaling and finite-size scaling are calculated analytically using the quantum Langevin equation. Furthermore, the physics contained in this simple model is surprisingly rich: it includes a continuous phase transition, Z 2 symmetry breaking, PT symmetry, state squeezing, and critical fluctuations. Due to its simplicity and solvability, this model can serve as a paradigm for exploration of open quantum many-body physics.

Applicability of semiclassical theories in the strong-field plasma regime

For many purposes, classical plasma dynamics models can work surprisingly well, even for strong electromagnetic fields, approaching the Schwinger critical fields, and high frequencies, approaching the Compton frequency. However, the applicability of classical models tends to depend rather sensitively on the details of the problem. In the present paper, we study the specific case of plasma oscillations to draw a line between the classical and quantum relativistic regimes. Here, due to the field geometry of study, mechanisms like radiation reaction and Breit-Wheeler pair production, which tend to be important for electromagnetic fields, are rather effectively suppressed. Moreover, we find that the polarization current due to the electron spin is generally negligible for frequencies below the Compton frequency, compared with the free current, whose magnitude is well-approximated by the classical Vlasov theory. However, we show that pair creation due to the Schwinger mechanism can sometimes be important for surprisingly modest field strengths, of the order of 10% of the critical field or even smaller. A rough guideline for when the classical Vlasov theory can be applied is given.
