IER 488: MUSiC Accomplishments and Goals [Slides]

IER-488: Measurement of Uranium Subcritical and Critical (MUSiC) consists of measurements of bare, HEU systems covering a large range of reactivities. Multiple detector systems and analysis methods are being used to obtain detector-independent results. Massive amounts of data and information available. Substantial analysis has been completed for both critical and subcritical configurations. Work in progress is largely novel research and will result in several conference proceedings, journal publications, and a subcritical benchmark. There is still a large amount of data that has not been analyzed and much more to come from the analysis of the Measurements of Uranium Subcritical and Critical.

Delayed Critical Highly Enriched Uranium Metal Cylinders with Thin Graphite Top and Bottom Reflectors

Nine 7, 11, and 15 in. diam highly enriched uranium (HEU, 93.15 wt % 235 U) metal cylinders were assembled on the vertical assembly machine in the Oak Ridge Critical Experiments Facility (ORCEF) and had 1, 2, or 3 in. thick HLM graphite reflectors on the top and bottom. The experiments, which were performed between April 3, 1970, and February 18, 1971, used 23 operational days at ORCEF. Before those experiments were carried out, unreflected and unmoderated, graphite- and polyethylene-reflected, and polyethylene-moderated HEU metal cylinders had been assembled to obtain delayed criticality at ORCEF in the 1960s and reported by the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) at the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA)*. The data from the nine critical experiments are acceptable for use as criticality safety benchmark experiments for the NEA’s ICSBEP once the uncertainty analysis is completed. Based on previous ICSBEP benchmarks with HEU metal at ORCEF, the uncertainties in k eff are expected to be as low as ±0.0004.

Sensitivity Coefficients Calculated for the Prompt Neutron Decay Constant At or Near Delayed Critical

The derivation of a non-invasive prompt neutron decay constant sensitivity coefficient is provided in this work. The computation of the sensitivity coefficient derived in this work does not require modification of Monte Carlo source code and is based on capabilities available in Monte Carlo N-Particle R© Code Version 6.2. The prompt neutron decay constant sensitivity coefficients are calculated for 44-group and 252-group energy structures for specific nuclide-reaction pairs in the Jezebel benchmark experiment. The nuclide-reaction pairs investigated in this work include Pu- 239(n,f), Pu-240(n,f), and Pu-241(n,f). Physical explanations of the sensitivity profiles exhibited by the 252-group energy structure are investigated for the prompt neutron multiplication factor, mean neutron lifetime, and prompt neutron decay constant. The prompt neutron decay constant sensitivity coefficients calculated for the 44-group and 252-group energy structure of Pu-239(n,f) are compared. Lastly, the 44-group energy structure sensitivity coefficients calculated are used for nuclear-data induced uncertainty quantification of the neutron multiplication factor. This work shows that a reduction in the nuclear data-induced uncertainty of the neutron multiplication factor is possible for all nuclide-reaction pairs investigated when prompt neutron decay constant sensitivity coefficients are utilized. This is important for new critical experiment design optimization studies of measurement configurations. This work provides a basis for more detailed sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification of nuclide, reaction, and energy-specific cross section data.
