Reducing Ripple In A Switching Voltage Regulator

Ripple voltage in output of switching voltage regulator reduced substantially by simple additional circuitry adding little to overall weight and size of regulator. Heretofore, additional filtering circuitry needed to obtain comparable reductions in ripple typically as large and heavy as original regulator. Current opposing ripple current injected into filter capacitor.

Study of ripple formation in unidirectionally-tensioned membranes

The study of membrane behavior is one of the areas of interest in the development of ultralightweight and lightweight structures for space applications. Utilization of membranes as loadcarrying components or support structure for antenna patch-arrays, collectors, sun-shades and solar-sail reflective surfaces brings about a variety of challenges that require understanding of the ripple-formation phenomenology, development of reliable test and analysis techniques, and solution methods for challenges related to the intended applications. This paper presents interim results from a study on the behavior of unidirectionally tensioned flat and singly-curved membranes. It focuses on preliminary experimental work to explore formation of ripples' and on finite element analysis (FEA) to correlate and predict their formation on thin polyimide membrane models.

Static DC to DC Power Conditioning-Active Ripple Filter, 1 MHZ DC to DC Conversion, and Nonlinear Analysis

Dc to dc static power conditioning systems on unmanned spacecraft have as their inputs highly fluctuating dc voltages which they condition to regulated dc voltages. These input voltages may be less than or greater than the desired regulated voltages. The design of two circuits which address specific problems in the design of these power conditioning systems and a nonlinear analysis of one of the circuits are discussed. The first circuit design is for a nondissipative active ripple filter which uses an operational amplifier to amplify and cancel the sensed ripple voltage. A dc to dc converter operating at a switching frequency of 1 MHz is the second circuit discussed. A nonlinear analysis of the type of dc to dc converter utilized in designing the 1 MHz converter is included.

Ripple Ring Basins on Ganymede and Callisto

The unusual morphology of the Valhalla multiple or ripple-ring basin in Callisto was totally unexpected in light of the morphologies of large impact structures on the terrestrial planets. Two other ripple-ring basins (RRB's), Asgard and a smaller structure near the crater Adlinda are also described. Several additional RRB's were found on Callisto, an example of which is shown. A previously unrecognized RRB on Ganymede was also found. An image and geologic sketch map of this RRB are shown. Morphometric and positional data for all known RRB's are given.

A collisional model for the formation of ripples in early-type disk galaxies

Restricted three-body calculations of high-inclination low-impact-parameter encounters between a disk galaxy and its companion are used to demonstrate that the shell-like ripples noted in a number of disk galaxies are also collisional artifacts. It is suggested that some of the ripples may be the results of internal oscillations following such encounters. It is assumed that the target is an early-type disk with a sufficiently low gas fraction that recent star formation does not dominate the appearance of the disturbed disk.

Describing-function analysis of a ripple regulator with slew-rate limits and time delays

The effects of time delays and slew-rate limits on the steady-state operating points and performance of a free-running ripple regulator are evaluated using describing-function analysis. The describing function of an ideal comparator (no time delays or slew rate limits) has no phase shift and is independent of frequency. It is found that turn-on delay and turn-off delay have different effects on gain and phase and cannot be combined. Comparator hysteresis affects both gain and phase; likewise, time delays generally affect both gain and phase. It is found that the effective time delay around the feedback loop is one half the sum of turn-on and turn-off delays, regardless of whether the delays are caused by storage time or slew rate limits. Expressions are formulated for the switching frequency, switch duty ratio, dc output, and output ripple. For the case of no hysteresis, a simple, graphical solution for the switching frequency is possible, and the resulting switching frequency is independent of first-order variations of input or load.

Rippling Instability of a Collapsing Bubble

The rippling instability of a liquid sheet was first observed by Debregeas, de Gennes, an Brochard-Wyart [Science 279, 1704 (1998)] on a hemispherical bubble resting on a free surface. Unlike a soap bubble, it collapses under its own weight while bursting, and folds into a wavy structure which breaks the original axisymmetry. In fact, this effect occurs for both purely elastic and purely viscous (liquid) sheets, and an analogy can be made between the two mechanisms. We present a theory for the onset of the instability in both cases, in which the growth of the corrugation out of an inextensible initial condition is governed by the competition between gravitational and bending (shearing) forces. The instability occurs for a range of densities, stiffnesses (viscosities), and sizes, a result which arises less from dynamics than from geometry, suggesting a wide validity. We further obtain a quantitative expression for the number of ripples. Finally, we present the results of experiments, which are consistent with our predictions.

Delayed ripple counter simplifies square-root computation

Ripple subtract technique simplifies the logic circuitry required in a binary computing device to derive the square root of a number. Successively higher numbers are subtracted from a register containing the number out of which the square root is to be extracted. The last number subtracted will be the closest integer to the square root of the number.

Thermal ripples in a resistive and radiative instability

The development of the resistive tearing instability in the case of sheared magnetic fields is considered, taking into account also the occurrence of a radiatively driven thermal instability. It is pointed out that thermal conduction has generally been neglected in theories similar to those discussed. The present investigation is concerned with a consideration of both parallel and perpendicular thermal conduction, in addition to finite resistivity and radiative loss. Attention is given to the equations and the model, the spatial singularity which arises with consideration of only the parallel heat conduction, the removal of this singularity and the formation of temperature oscillations (thermal ripples) by inclusion of the perpendicular heat-flux component, and details regarding the numerical procedure. A brief explanation is provided of the conditions required for the oscillations, and potential implications of the results with respect to the solar flare are discussed.

Rippled Quasiperpendicular Shock Observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale Spacecraft

Collisionless shock nonstationarity arising from microscale physics influences shock structure and particle acceleration mechanisms. Nonstationarity has been difficult to quantify due to the small spatial and temporal scales. We use the closely spaced (subgyroscale), high-time-resolution measurements from one rapid crossing of Earths quasiperpendicular bow shock by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft to compare competing nonstationarity processes. Using MMSs high-cadence kinetic plasma measurements, we show that the shock exhibits nonstationarity in the form of ripples.

A GaN-based Four-Switch Buck-Boost Converter using Ripple Correlation Control for Maximum Power Point Tracking in Dynamic Deep Space Environments

As the demand for high-performance power conversion in spacecraft continues to grow and spacecraft mass and volume budgets become increasingly tight, it is essential to design DC-DC converters with higher efficiency and power density. Although photovoltaic (PV) efficiency has increased over time, solar irradiance and temperatures can fluctuate dramatically in deep space. This causes significant variations in the maximum power point (MPP) of the PV array, which can decrease the overall system efficiency unless accounted for. Thus, it is imperative to track the MPP of the PV panels to maintain optimal efficiency. This paper presents the experimental development of a four-switch, GaN-based buck-boost converter with an implementation of the Ripple Correlation Control (RCC) MPPT algorithm for dynamic deep space environments. Due to the use of GaN HEMTs, the experimental system achieves better efficiency and power density compared to the previous state of the art implementations. A simulation of the prototype buck-boost converter was implemented in SaberRD (Synopsis), and a digital design of the RCC-based MPPT controller utilizing the StateAMS tool is presented. The simulation results show that this controller swiftly and precisely converged to the MPP of the source PV panels in a dynamic solar irradiance condition.
