Robot Manipulators

Space Shuttle's Remote Manipulator System (Canadarm) is a 50 foot robot arm used to deploy, retrieve or repair satellites in orbit. Initial spinoff version is designed to remove, inspect and replace large components of Ontario Hydro's CANDU nuclear reactors, which supply 50 percent of Ontario Hydro's total power reduction. CANDU robot is the first of SPAR's Remote Manipulator Systems intended for remote materials handling operations in nuclear servicing, chemical processing, smelting and manufacturing. Inco Limited used remote manipulator for remote control mining equipment to enhance safety and productivity of Inco's hardrock mining operations. System not only improves safety in a hazardous operation that costs more than a score of lives annually, it also increases productivity fourfold. Remote Manipulator System Division is also manufacturing a line of industrial robots and developing additional system for nuclear servicing, mining, defense and space operations.

Proteus - An experimenter's view

The scientific experiments package to be carried by the Proteus system takes the form of an Instrument Load carried into orbit by a Space Shuttle, and there mated to a Proteus spacecraft with the Shuttle's Remote Manipulator System. The Proteus system extends to ground support equipment, development tools, and communications, as well as the orbiting satellites. It is expected that Proteus will be able to triple the number of Explorer missions while staying within the current budgetary allocation for such missions. The Proteus spacecraft encompasses a system interface assembly plug, a data handling module, remote interface units, and a power distribution module.

Data Quality Screening Service

A report describes the Data Quality Screening Service (DQSS), which is designed to help automate the filtering of remote sensing data on behalf of science users. Whereas this process often involves much research through quality documents followed by laborious coding, the DQSS is a Web Service that provides data users with data pre-filtered to their particular criteria, while at the same time guiding the user with filtering recommendations of the cognizant data experts. The DQSS design is based on a formal semantic Web ontology that describes data fields and the quality fields for applying quality control within a data product. The accompanying code base handles several remote sensing datasets and quality control schemes for data products stored in Hierarchical Data Format (HDF), a common format for NASA remote sensing data. Together, the ontology and code support a variety of quality control schemes through the implementation of the Boolean expression with simple, reusable conditional expressions as operands. Additional datasets are added to the DQSS simply by registering instances in the ontology if they follow a quality scheme that is already modeled in the ontology. New quality schemes are added by extending the ontology and adding code for each new scheme.

Projected role of advanced computational aerodynamic methods at the Lockheed-Georgia company

Experience with advanced computational methods being used at the Lockheed-Georgia Company to aid in the evaluation and design of new and modified aircraft indicates that large and specialized computers will be needed to make advanced three-dimensional viscous aerodynamic computations practical. The Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation Facility should be used to provide a tool for designing better aerospace vehicles while at the same time reducing development costs by performing computations using Navier-Stokes equations solution algorithms and permitting less sophisticated but nevertheless complex calculations to be made efficiently. Configuration definition procedures and data output formats can probably best be defined in cooperation with industry, therefore, the computer should handle many remote terminals efficiently. The capability of transferring data to and from other computers needs to be provided. Because of the significant amount of input and output associated with 3-D viscous flow calculations and because of the exceedingly fast computation speed envisioned for the computer, special attention should be paid to providing rapid, diversified, and efficient input and output.

Electromechanical slip sensor

Sensor indicates direction of slip and slip rate of objects handled by remote manipulators. Freely movable spheroid with staggered pattern of surface indentations rotates in direction of slipping body, tilting shaft with conductive disk plate. Plate assembly is bent toward contact corresponding to direction of slip and is flicked by indentations at rate corresponding to slip rate. Slip direction and rate are determined using LED's arranged circularly or microcomputer with CRT display.

Evaluation of COSTAR mass handling characteristics in an environment. A simulation of the Hubble Space Telescope service mission

The STS-61 Shuttle mission, which took place in December 1993, was solely aimed at servicing the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Successful completion of this mission was critical to NASA since it was necessary to rectify a flaw in the HST mirror. In addition, NASA had never scheduled a mission with such a high quantity of complex extravehicular activity. To meet the challenge of this mission, the STS-61 crew trained extensively in the Weightless Environment Test Facility at the Johnson Space Center and in the Neutral Buoyancy Simulator at the Marshall Space Flight Center. However, it was suspected that neutral buoyancy training might induce negative training by virtue of the viscous damping effect present in water. The mockups built for this training also did not have the mass properties of the actual orbital replacement units (ORUs). It was felt that the crew should be further trained on mockups with similar mass characteristics. A comprehensive study was designed to address these issues. The study was quantitative, and instrumentation was set up to measure and quantify the forces and moments experienced during ORU mass handling and remote manipulator system run conditions.

The ARADS Project as an Astrobiological Survey Mission Prototype

An astrobiological survey prior to human arrival will be important for preservation of signs of any existing or past evidence of Martian life, to reduce the risk of unintentional forward contamination of Martian environments in which terrestrial microbes might be able to gain a foothold (e.g., [1]), and to potentially protect the health of any human crews and enable their safe return to Earth. Evaluating for the presence of life and biosignatures may become a critical-path Mars exploration precursor in the not-so-far future, circa 2030-35. The near-subsurface, with its potential combination of volatiles, vapor exchange with the surface, and shelter from surface radiation, will be a primary initial target for in-situ astrobiological investigation. Sample acquisition, drilling and sample handling are key elements of robotic missions that target the subsurface [2], as well as near-surface ground ice deposits. In the mid 2000s, the Mars Astrobiology Field Laboratory (AFL) was proposed as a follow-on mission concept to the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL)/Curiosity rover mission [3]. The AFL would have included precision drilling to 2m, automated sample handling and remote processing of cores. However, the AFL concept needed further development and maturation. The Atacama Rover Astrobiology Drilling Studies (ARADS) project concept [4] was in part AFL-inspired. The 2014 ARADS concept included a medium sized rover, with habitability instruments, including the Phoenix Wet Chemistry Laboratory (WCL) [5], and an enhanced version of the ExoMars Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer (MOMA) Laser Desorption-Linear Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer (LITMS) [6]. ARADS likewise included two biosignature detection instruments -- the Signs of Life Detector (SOLID) immunoassay instrument [7,8] and the Chemical Laptop-derived [9] Planetary In-Situ Capillary Electrophoresis System (PISCES), while mitigating Planetary Protection-relevant contamination issues [10]. ARADS project objectives were to demonstrate the potential science return for such a mission in the context of the search for evidence of life, and technically to demonstrate the feasibility of roving with drilling missions to Mars. ARADS technology goals targeted analog-site demonstrations of automated drilling and sampling, integrated with its mobile habitability and biosignature detection instruments. And ARADS science operations goals developed remote science, contamination mitigation, and communications methods to enable simulating AFL-like science operations with time delays, directed by a remote science team[11]. Five subsequent Mars analog site field demonstrations (in Chile’s hyperarid Atacama Desert, 2016-19) provided a step-by-step development pathway for the ARADS platform’s science capabilities and systems integration, culminating in an integrated remote roving mission simulation in the final ARADS year (2019).

IEEE 1393 Spaceborne Fiber Optic Data Bus: A Standard Approach to On-Board Payload Data Handling Networks for the AIAA Space Technology Conference and Exposition "Partnering in the 21th Century"

The Spaceborne Fiber Optic Data Bus (SFODB) is the next generation in on-board data handling networks. It will do for high speed payloads what SAE 1773 has done for on-board command and telemetry systems. That is, it will significantly reduce the cost of payload development, integration and test through interface standardization. As defined in IEEE 1393, SFODB is a 1 Gb/s, fiber optic network specifically designed to support the real-time, on-board data handling requirements of remote sensing spacecraft. The network is highly reliable, fault tolerant, and capable of withstanding the rigors of launch and the harsh space environment. SFODB achieves this operational and environmental performance while maintaining the small size, light weight, and low power necessary for spaceborne applications. SFODB was developed jointly by DoD and NASA GSFC to meet the on-board data handling needs of Remote Sensing satellites. This jointly funded project produced a complete set of flight transmitters, receivers and protocol ASICS; a complete Development & Evaluation System; and, the IEEE 1393 standard.

A Simulated Drilling Mission to Search for Bio-molecular Signatures of Life on Mars Performed in the Atacama Desert (Chile): Demonstrating Drilling, Sample Handling, and Life-Detection Instruments Remotely Operated with Mission-like Protocols

The search for evidence of life on Mars requires accessing materials that are protected from the oxidizing and irradiated conditions at the surface. Mars rovers Curiosity and Perseverance have performed shallow (few cm) drilling to access relevant samples. The upcoming ExoMars mission will acquire samples from up to 2 meters depth. Field experiments in Mars analog sites help prepare for this and other future deep drilling missions. In Sept. 2019 the ARADS (Atacama Rover Astrobiology Drilling Studies project (Glass et al. 2022) conducted a rover-based drilling mission to search for bio-molecular evidence of life in a Mars analog site in Atacama Chile.

Pacific area data collection stations

The installation of environmental data collection systems at several remotely located sites in islands in the Pacific Ocean is summarized. The effort was designed to enhance the ability to collect hydrological information. The data collection station consists of a data acquisition system for handling data, a transmitter for uplinking information to the GOES-W geostationary satellite, and a variety of environmental sensors for data accumulation. Each system was assembled, tested, and deployed on designated islands. The concept of using microprocessors for handling data at remote sites and relaying it via a satellite link is a cost effective approach. Such systems require high reliability and proven performance in the field.

On multidisciplinary research on the application of remote sensing to water resources problems

This research is directed toward development of a practical, operational remote sensing water quality monitoring system. To accomplish this, five fundamental aspects of the problem have been under investigation during the past three years. These are: (1) development of practical and economical methods of obtaining, handling and analyzing remote sensing data; (2) determination of the correlation between remote sensed imagery and actual water quality parameters; (3) determination of the optimum technique for monitoring specific water pollution parameters and for evaluating the reliability with which this can be accomplished; (4) determination of the extent of masking due to depth of penetration, bottom effects, film development effects, and angle falloff, and development of techniques to eliminate or minimize them; and (5) development of operational procedures which might be employed by a municipal, state or federal agency for the application of remote sensing to water quality monitoring, including space-generated data.
