A decade of telerobotics in rehabilitation: Demonstrated utility blocked by the high cost of manipulation and the complexity of the user interface

The Stanford/VA Interactive Robotics Laboratory set out in 1978 to test the hypothesis that industrial robotics technology could be applied to serve the manipulation needs of severely impaired individuals. Five generations of hardware, three generations of system software, and over 125 experimental subjects later, we believe that genuine utility is achievable. The experience includes development of over 65 task applications using voiced command, joystick control, natural language command and 3D object designation technology. A brief foray into virtual environments, using flight simulator technology, was instructive. If reality and virtuality come for comparable prices, you cannot beat reality. A detailed review of assistive robot anatomy and the performance specifications needed to achieve cost/beneficial utility will be used to support discussion of the future of rehabilitation telerobotics. Poised on the threshold of commercial viability, but constrained by the high cost of technically adequate manipulators, this worthy application domain flounders temporarily. In the long run, it will be the user interface that governs utility.

Towards Development of Robotic Aid for Rehabilitation of Locomotion-Impaired Subjects

Manual assistance of therapists to help movement of legs of spinal cord injured (SCI) subjects during stepping on a treadmill for locomotion rehabilitation has severe economic and technical limitations. Scientists at the Department of Physiological Science at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and roboticists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) initiated a joint effort to develop a robotic mechanism capable of performing controlled motions equivalent to the arm and hand motions of therapists assisting the stepping of locomotion impaired subjects on a treadmill, while the subjects' body weight is partially supported by an overhead harness. A first necessary technical step towards this development is to measure and understand the kinematics and dynamics of the therapists' arm and hand motions as they are reflected on the subjects' leg movement. This paper describes an initial measurement system developed for this purpose together with the related measurement results, and outlines the planned future technical work.

Rehabilitation of the Rocket Vehicle Integration Test Stand at Edwards Air Force Base

Since initial use in 1958 for the X-15 rocket-powered research airplane, the Rocket Engine Test Facility has proven essential for testing and servicing rocket-powered vehicles at Edwards Air Force Base. For almost two decades, several successful flight-test programs utilized the capability of this facility. The Department of Defense has recently demonstrated a renewed interest in propulsion technology development with the establishment of the National Aerospace Initiative. More recently, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is undergoing a transformation to realign the organization, focusing on the Vision for Space Exploration. These initiatives provide a clear indication that a very capable ground-test stand at Edwards Air Force Base will be beneficial to support the testing of future access-to-space vehicles. To meet the demand of full integration testing of rocket-powered vehicles, the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, the Air Force Flight Test Center, and the Air Force Research Laboratory have combined their resources in an effort to restore and upgrade the original X-15 Rocket Engine Test Facility to become the new Rocket Vehicle Integration Test Stand. This report describes the history of the X-15 Rocket Engine Test Facility, discusses the current status of the facility, and summarizes recent efforts to rehabilitate the facility to support potential access-to-space flight-test programs. A summary of the capabilities of the facility is presented and other important issues are discussed.

"Anti-Gravity" Treadmills Speed Rehabilitation

A former Ames Research Center engineer, Dr. Robert Whalen, invented a treadmill that he licensed to a Menlo Park, California company, Alter-G Inc. The company s G-Trainer is an enclosed treadmill that uses air pressure to help patients feel up to 80 percent lighter, easing discomfort during rehabilitation. A patient desiring more weightlessness during a workout can simply press a button and the air pressure increases, lifting the body and reducing strain and impact. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared the G-Trainer for medical use in January 2008, and researchers are now assessing the G-Trainer s effectiveness in aiding patients with various neurological or musculoskeletal conditions.

Leveraging Game Consoles for the Delivery of TBI Rehabilitation

Military personnel are at a greater risk for traumatic brain injury (TBI) than the civilian population. In addition, the increase in exposure to explosives, i.e. , improvised explosive devices, in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, along with more effective body armor, has resulted in far more surviving casualties suffering from TBI than in previous wars. This effort presents the results of a feasibility study and early prototype of a brain injury rehabilitation delivery system (BIRDS). BIRDS is designed to provide medical personnel treating TBI with a capability to prescribe game activities for patients to execute using a commercially available game console, either in a clinical setting or in their homes. These therapeutic activities will contribute to recovery or remediation of the patients' cognitive dysfunctions. Solutions such as this that provide new applications for existing platforms have significant potential to address the growing incidence of TBI today.

RECOVER: An Automated Cloud-Based Decision Support System for Post-fire Rehabilitation Planning

RECOVER is a site-specific decision support system that automatically brings together in a single analysis environment the information necessary for post-fire rehabilitation decision-making. After a major wildfire, law requires that the federal land management agencies certify a comprehensive plan for public safety, burned area stabilization, resource protection, and site recovery. These burned area emergency response (BAER) plans are a crucial part of our national response to wildfire disasters and depend heavily on data acquired from a variety of sources. Final plans are due within 21 days of control of a major wildfire and become the guiding document for managing the activities and budgets for all subsequent remediation efforts. There are few instances in the federal government where plans of such wide-ranging scope and importance are assembled on such short notice and translated into action more quickly. RECOVER has been designed in close collaboration with our agency partners and directly addresses their high-priority decision-making requirements. In response to a fire detection event, RECOVER uses the rapid resource allocation capabilities of cloud computing to automatically collect Earth observational data, derived decision products, and historic biophysical data so that when the fire is contained, BAER teams will have a complete and ready-to-use RECOVER dataset and GIS analysis environment customized for the target wildfire. Initial studies suggest that RECOVER can transform this information-intensive process by reducing from days to a matter of minutes the time required to assemble and deliver crucial wildfire-related data.

In Situ Chemical Reduction Interim Measures Work Plan Hot Spot 3 Mobile Launcher Platform Rehabilitation Sites / Vehicle Assembly Building Area (SWMU 056) Kennedy Space Center, Florida

This document presents the design details of an In Situ Chemical Reduction (ISCR) Interim Measures Work Plan for Hot Spot 3 within Mobile Launcher Platform Rehabilitation Sites/Vehicle Assembly Building Area, Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) 056 (SWMU 056), located at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The interim measures (IM) treatment zone encompasses an area identified as the High Concentration Plume (HCP), which is defined as the area with chlorinated volatile organic compound (CVOC) groundwater concentrations greater than their respective Natural Attenuation Default Concentration (NADC). The objective of the IM is to remove CVOC mass within the treatment area to levels that facilitate a transition to natural attenuation monitoring. The IM design consists of the selected ISCR amendment, Provect-IR, which is a mixture of solid reagents in a single product that promotes enhanced reductive dechlorination and ISCR. ProvectIR includes natural antimethanogenic compounds; multiple hydrophilic, nutrient-rich organic carbon sources; zero valent iron; chemical oxygen scavengers; and vitamin and mineral sources. The proposed treatment area for this IM encompasses less than 1 acre and includes three vertical treatment intervals to reach the NADC plumes that vary per CVOC and depth: 4 to 10 feet below land surface (bls), 10 to 18 feet bls, and 42 to 52 feet bls. The amendment will be distributed through 16 injection points (IP01 through IP16) using dosing rates ranging from 0.4% to 0.6% of soil mass within the treatment interval and a 15% or 20% slurry strength. Dosage rates and slurry strength are based on groundwater geochemistry, soil characteristics, and contaminant concentrations. To aid in the evaluation of the ISCR IM performance, six performance monitoring wells will be installed following injections and sampled semiannually. CVOC parameters will be sampled until concentrations reduce to below their NADC. Underground Injection Control parameters will be sampled until concentrations decrease to background levels or to levels that meet respective groundwater standards. Sampling frequency will be evaluated annually and modified as needed. The path forward for the ISCR IM implementation includes preparing the IM Implementation Work Plan, ISCR injections, monitoring well installation, performance monitoring, and reporting.
