Non Radiation Hardened Microprocessors in Spaced Based Remote Sensing Systems

The CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations) mission is a comprehensive suite of active and passive sensors including a 20Hz 230mj Nd:YAG lidar, a visible wavelength Earth-looking camera and an imaging infrared radiometer. CALIPSO flies in formation with the Earth Observing System Post-Meridian (EOS PM) train, provides continuous, near-simultaneous measurements and is a planned 3 year mission. CALIPSO was launched into a 98 degree sun synchronous Earth orbit in April of 2006 to study clouds and aerosols and acquires over 5 gigabytes of data every 24 hours. The ground track of one CALIPSO orbit as well as high and low intensity South Atlantic Anomaly outlines is shown. CALIPSO passes through the SAA several times each day. Spaced based remote sensing systems that include multiple instruments and/or instruments such as lidar generate large volumes of data and require robust real-time hardware and software mechanisms and high throughput processors. Due to onboard storage restrictions and telemetry downlink limitations these systems must pre-process and reduce the data before sending it to the ground. This onboard processing and realtime requirement load may mean that newer more powerful processors are needed even though acceptable radiation-hardened versions have not yet been released. CALIPSO's single board computer payload controller processor is actually a set of four (4) voting non-radiation hardened COTS Power PC 603r's built on a single width VME card by General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems (GDAIS). Significant radiation concerns for CALIPSO and other Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites include the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), the north and south poles and strong solar events. Over much of South America and extending into the South Atlantic Ocean the Van Allen radiation belts dip to just 200-800km and spacecraft entering this area are subjected to high energy protons and experience higher than normal Single Event Upset (SEU) and Single Event Latch-up (SEL) rates. Although less significant, spacecraft flying in the area around the poles experience similar upsets. Finally, powerful solar proton events in the range of 10MeV/10pfu to 100MeV/1pfu as are forecasted and tracked by NOAA's Space Environment Center in Colorado can result in Single Event Upset (SEU), Single Event Latch-up (SEL) and permanent failures such as Single Event Gate Rupture (SEGR) in some technologies. (Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) are another source, especially for gate rupture) CALIPSO mitigates common radiation concerns in its data handling through the use of redundant processors, radiation-hardened Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC), hardware-based Error Detection and Correction (EDAC), processor and memory scrubbing, redundant boot code and mirrored files. After presenting a system overview this paper will expand on each of these strategies. Where applicable, related on-orbit data collected since the CALIPSO initial boot on May 4, 2006 will be noted.

Design and optimization of radiation-hardened isolated converters for Jovian environments

This paper presents the design and optimization of a class of flexible, high efficiency, multiple output capable, radiation-hardened isolated DC/DC converters for Jovian environments. The proposed converters achieve lower electromagnetic emission, better thermal management and higher efficiency. A new series of radiation-hardened isolated GaN gate driver circuit is proposed for space applications. Experimental results based on two prototype units implemented in the laboratory verify the performance of the proposed isolated converters.

Radiation hardening of components and systems for nuclear rocket vehicle applications

The results of the analysis of the S-2 and S-4B components, although incomplete, indicate that many Saturn 5 components and subsystems, e.g., pumps, valves, etc., can be radiation hardened to meet NRV requirements by material substitution and minor design modifications. Results of these analyses include (1) recommended radiation tolerance limits for over 100 material applications; (2) design data which describes the components of each system; (3) presentation of radiation hardening examples of systems; and (4) designing radiation effects tests to supply data for selecting materials.

Long-term thermal stability and calibration of Type-II fiber Bragg grating array inscribed in radiation-hardened fibers

This paper investigates the long-term thermal stability of Type-II fiber Bragg grating (FBG) arrays, inscribed by femtosecond laser in radiation-hardened fiber, for potential applications as multiplexed sensors in high-temperature energy systems. The thermal stability of FBG sensors was assessed through 16 thermal cycles from room temperature (RT) to 750 ℃ about two months, involving 100 FBG sensors. The results show that the absolute temperature drift of FBG sensors can be reduced to less than 0.4 pm/day after 54 h thermal annealing process at a constant temperature of 800 ℃. As temperature sensors, the FBGs demonstrated stable performance, achieving a standard deviation (STD) of 1.8 pm (corresponding to a temperature resolution of 0.118 ℃) post-annealing. Repeated thermal cycles revealed a random drift of 2.3 pm in the FBG wavelength at RT. Polynomial fitting was explored as a calibration method to convert FBG wavelength shifts into absolute temperature measurements. By optimizing calibration temperature points (RT, 200 ℃, 400 ℃, and 750 ℃), the study shows that cubic polynomial calibration using four points yields an average R2 of 0.9997 and an RMSE of 3.58 ℃ across the entire temperature range (RT to 750 ℃). This approach represents an 11.53-fold improvement over empirical slope calibration and a 1.34-fold improvement over four-point piecewise fitting. The findings indicate that Type-II FBGs inscribed in radiation-hardened fibers can function as accurate temperature sensors, with performance on par with or exceeding that of thermocouples. With their multiplexing capability, robust signal transmission over long lead cables, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, FBG sensors offer a promising alternative to traditional electronic sensors for energy system monitoring.

A Radiation Hardened by Design CMOS ASIC for Thermopile Readouts

A radiation hardened by design (RHBD) mixed-signal application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) has been designed for a thermopile readout for operation in the harsh Jovian orbital environment. The multi-channel digitizer (MCD) ASIC includes 18 low noise amplifier channels which have tunable gain/filtering coefficients, a 16-bit sigma-delta analog-digital converter (SDADC) and an on-chip controller. The 18 channels, SDADC and controller were designed to operate with immunity to single event latchup (SEL) and to at least 10 Mrad total ionizing dose (TID). The ASIC also contains a radiation tolerant 16-bit 20 MHz Nyquist ADC for general purpose instrumentation digitizer needs. The ASIC is currently undergoing fabrication in a commercial 180 nm CMOS process. Although this ASIC was designed specifically for the harsh radiation environment of the NASA led JEO mission it is suitable for integration into instrumentation payloads 011 the ESA JUICE mission where the radiation hardness requirements are slightly less stringent.

Radiation Hardened Beam Instrumentations for Multi-mega-watt Beam Facilities

A beam instrumentation is an essential element for the successful operate particle accelerators in which various diagnostics and beam control systems are integrated into beam optics. However, the performance of beam instrumentation is often subject to constraints such as prompt radiation dose, integrated radiation dose, operation (ambient) temperature and humidity, available space, and strength of embedded electromagnetic fields at the monitoring point. These constraints will limit the dynamic range of operational beam parameters, like the maximum achievable beam power. A seamless R\&D effort to develop the radiation hardened beam instrumentation should be made for future multi-MW beam facilities. In this paper, we describes about a radiation hardened beam instrumentation based on the operational experience of the NuMI beam line.

Dislocation loop evolution and radiation hardening in nickel-based concentrated solid solution alloys

Effects of chemical composition, ion irradiation dose and temperature on unfaulting of irradiation induced Frank dislocation loops to perfect loops in two nickel based single-phase solid solution alloys, Ni–20Fe and NiFe–20Cr, have been studied. The fraction of Frank loops decreases with irradiation dose from 7.2 to 38.4 dpa at 500°C, but with more Frank loops remaining in the ternary alloy. However, perfect loops and dislocation networks become the dominant features of defects at 580°C in both alloys. The results indicate a thermally assisted loop unfaulting process that may be hindered by more sluggish defect motion in the alloy with more chemical components. Nano-indentation with both continuous stiffness method and single indentation method are used to measure radiation hardening. Loop unfaulting in both alloys irradiated at 580°C reduced radiation hardening while significant hardening is observed after irradiation at 500°C. The quasi-static single indentation method exhibits lower hardness results compared to continuous stiffness method, because dislocations induced from the cyclic loading in the latter method get relaxed and stabilized, resulting in higher resistance to the indenter.

Radiation hardening of MOS devices by boron

A technique is described for radiation hardening of MOS devices and specifically for stabilizing the gate threshold potential at room temperature of a radiation subjected MOS field-effect device with a semiconductor substrate, an insulating layer of oxide on the substrate, and a gate electrode disposed on the insulating layer. The boron is introduced within a layer of the oxide of about 100 A-300 A thickness immediately adjacent the semiconductor-insulator interface. The concentration of boron in the oxide layer is preferably maintained on the order of 10 to the 18th power atoms/cu cm. The technique serves to reduce and substantially annihilate radiation induced positive gate charge accumulations.
