Spin-spin entanglement in diffractive heavy-quark production

We calculate the spin density matrix of a heavy-quark-antiquark pair ($b\bar{⁢b}$, $c\bar{⁢c}$ or $s\bar{⁢s}$) diffractively produced in deep inelastic scattering and ultraperipheral collisions. We show that the Pomeron exchange leaves characteristic imprints on the entanglement pattern between the quark and the antiquark. For the longitudinally polarized virtual photon, the pair always exhibits maximal entanglement and maximal violation of the Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality. For the transversely polarized photon, the pair is always entangled and Bell violating, reaching maximal entanglement and maximal violation simultaneously when the transverse momentum approximately equals the quark mass.

Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139 fb -1 of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) $^{+75}_{-71}$(syst) fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515$^{+36}_{-42}$ fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Measurement of beauty-quark production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV via non-prompt D mesons

The p T -diferential production cross sections of non-prompt D 0 , D + , and D$^+_s$ at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The measurements are performed at midrapidity, |y| < 0.5, with the data sample collected by ALICE from 2016 to 2018. The results are in agreement with predictions from several perturbative QCD calculations. The fragmentation fraction of beauty quarks to strange mesons divided by the one to non-strange mesons, $f_s$/($f_u$ +$f_d$), is found to be 0.114 ± 0.016 (stat.) ± 0.006 (syst.) ± 0.003 (BR) ± 0.003 (extrap.). This value is compatible with previous measurements at lower centre-of-mass energies and in diferent collision systems in agreement with the assumption of universality of fragmentation functions. In addition, the dependence of the non-prompt D meson production on the centre of-mass energy is investigated by comparing the results obtained at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV, showing a hardening of the non-prompt D-meson p T -diferential production cross section at higher $\sqrt{s}$. Finally, the $b\overline{b}$ production cross section per unit of rapidity at midrapidity is calculated from the non-prompt D 0 , D + , D$^+_s$, and $Λ^+_c$ hadron measurements, obtaining dσ/dy = 75.2 ± 3.2 (stat.) ± 5.2 (syst.)$^{+12.3}_{-3.2}$ (extrap.) µb.

Search for new physics in top quark production with additional leptons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 13 TeV using effective field theory

Events containing one or more top quarks produced with additional prompt leptons are used to search for new physics within the framework of an effective field theory (EFT). The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb$^{−1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, collected by the CMS experiment in 2017. The selected events are required to have either two leptons with the same charge or more than two leptons; jets, including identified bottom quark jets, are also required, and the selected events are divided into categories based on the multiplicities of these objects. Sixteen dimension-six operators that can affect processes involving top quarks produced with additional charged leptons are considered in this analysis. Constructed to target EFT effects directly, the analysis applies a novel approach in which the observed yields are parameterized in terms of the Wilson coefficients (WCs) of the EFT operators. A simultaneous fit of the 16 WCs to the data is performed and two standard deviation confidence intervals for the WCs are extracted; the standard model expectations for the WC values are within these intervals for all of the WCs probed.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Charm- and bottom-quark production in Au+Au collisions at $$ \sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}} $$=200 GeV

Here, the invariant yield of electrons from open-heavy-flavor decays for 1 < p T < 8 GeV/c at midrapidity |y| < 0.35 in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV has been measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A displaced-vertex analysis with the PHENIX silicon-vertex detector enables extraction of the fraction of charm and bottom hadron decays and unfolding of the invariant yield of parent charm and bottom hadrons. The nuclear-modification factors RAA for electrons from charm and bottom hadron decays and heavy-flavor hadrons show both a centrality and a quark-mass dependence, indicating suppression in the quark-gluon plasma produced in these collisions that is medium sized and quark-mass dependent.

Erratum to: Search for single top-quark production via flavour-changing neutral currents at 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

One correction is noted for the paper. The branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$($W →{ℓv}$) = 0.3246 was not included in the conversion of the observed cross-section limit, σ x $\mathcal{B}$( $t →Wb$) x ($\mathcal{B}$($W →{ℓv}$) < 2.9to the coupling constants $κ_{ugt}$ and $κ_{cgt}$ and the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}$( $t →ug$) and $\mathcal{B}$( $t →cg$). The inclusion leads to weaker observed exclusion limits on the coupling constants divided by the scale of new physics of $k_{ugt}$/ Λ <10 x 10 -3 TeV -1 and $k_{cgt}$/Λ <23 x 10 -3 TeV -1 and on the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}$( $t →ug$) < 1.2 x10 -4 and $\mathcal{B}$( $t →cg$) < 6.4 x 10 -4 . The predicted exclusion limits on the coupling constants divided by the scale of new physics are $k_{ugt}$/ Λ < 9.5 x 10 -3 TeV -1 and $\mathcal{B}$( $t →cg$)/ Λ < 22 x 10 -3 TeV -1 and on the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}$( $t →ug$) < 1.1 x 10 -4 and $\mathcal{B}$( $t →cg$) < 5.7 x 10 -4 . Updated distributions of the observed upper limits on the coupling constants for combinations of cgt and ugt channels are shown in Figure 10a and on the branching fractions in Figure 10b.

Impact of heavy-quark production measurements in the CT18 global QCD analysis of PDFs

We discuss the impact of heavy-flavor production measurements in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at HERA on the CTEQ-TEA PDFs. In particular, we study the impact of the latest charm and bottom production measurements from the H1 and ZEUS collaborations on the gluon, and the interplay of these measurements with the data ensemble of the recent CT18 global QCD analysis.

Measurement of top-quark pair production in association with charm quarks in proton–proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Inclusive cross-sections or top-quark pair production in association with charm quarks are measured with proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 , collected with the ATLAS experiment at LHC between 2015 and 2018. The measurements are performed by requiring one or two charged leptons (electrons and muons), two b-tagged jets, and at least one additional jet in the final state. A custom flavor-tagging algorithm is employed for the simultaneous identification of b-jets and c-jets. In a fiducial phase space that replicates the acceptance of the ATLAS detector, the cross-sections for $t\bar{t}$ + ≥ 2c and $t\bar{t}$ + 1c production are measured to be $1.28^{+0.27}_{-0.24}$ pb and $6.4^{+1.0}_{-0.9}$ pb, respectively. The measurements are primarily limited by uncertainties in the modeling of inclusive $t\bar{t}$ and $t\bar{t}$ + $b\bar{b}$ production, in the calibration of the flavor-tagging algorithm, and by data statistics. Cross-section predictions from various $t\bar{t}$ simulations are largely consistent with the measured cross-section values, though all underpredict the observed values by 0.5 to 2.0 standard deviations. In a phase-space volume without requirements on the $t\bar{t}$ decay products and the jet multiplicity, the cross-section ratios of $t\bar{t}$ + ≥ 2c and $t\bar{t}$ + 1c to total $t\bar{t}$ + jets production are determined to be (1.23 ± 0.25)% and (8.8 ± 1.3)%.

Searches for violation of Lorentz invariance in top quark pair production using dilepton events in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions

A search for violation of Lorentz invariance in the production of top quark pairs ($t\bar{t}$) is presented. The measured normalized differential $t\bar{t}$production cross section, as a function of the sidereal time, is examined for potential modulations induced by Lorentz-invariance breaking operators in an effective field theory extension of the standard model (SM). The cross section is measured from collision events collected by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass-energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.8 fb −1 , and containing one electron and one muon. The results are found to be compatible with zero, in agreement with the SM, and are used to place upper limits at 68% confidence level on the magnitude of the Lorentz-violating couplings ranging from 1–8 × 10 −3 . This is the first precision test of the isotropy in special relativity with top quarks at the LHC, restricting further the bounds on such couplings by up to two orders of magnitude with respect to previous searches conducted at the Tevatron.

Search for same-charge top-quark pair production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the production of top-quark pairs with the same electric charge ($tt$ or $\overline{tt}$) is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 . Events with two same-charge leptons and at least two b-tagged jets are selected. Neural networks are employed to define two selections sensitive to additional couplings beyond the Standard Model that would enhance the production rate of same-sign top-quark pairs. No significant signal is observed, leading to an upper limit on the total production cross-section of same-sign top-quark pairs of 1.6 fb at 95% confidence level. Corresponding limits on the three Wilson coefficients associated with the $\mathcal{O}^{(1)}_{tu}$, $\mathcal{O}^{(1)}_{Qu}$, and $\mathcal{O}^{(8)}_{Qu}$ operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework are derived.

$\mathrm{Z}$ero-jettiness resummation for top-quark pair production at the $\mathrm{LHC}$

We study the resummation of the 0-jettiness resolution variable $\mathcal{T}_o$ for the top-quark pair production process in hadronic collisions. Starting from an effective theory framework we derive a factorisation formula for this observable which allows its resummation at any logarithmic order in the $\mathcal{T}_o$→ o limit. We then calculate the $\mathcal{O}(a_s)$ corrections to the soft function matrices and, by employing renormalisation group equation methods, we obtain the ingredients for the resummation formula up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We study the impact of these corrections to the 0-jettiness distribution by comparing predictions at different accuracy orders: NLL, NLL', NNLL and Approximate NNLL' (NNLL$^{'}_{a}$). We match these results to the corresponding fixed order calculations both at leading order and next-to-leading order for the $t\bar{t}$+jet production process, obtaining the most accurate prediction of the 0-jettiness distribution for the top-quark pair production process at NNLL$^{'}_{a}$+NLO accuracy.

Measurements of differential cross-sections in top-quark pair events with a high transverse momentum top quark and limits on beyond the Standard Model contributions to top-quark pair production with the ATLAS detector at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Cross-section measurements of top-quark pair production where the hadronically decaying top quark has transverse momentum greater than 355 GeV and the other top quark decays into ℓνb are presented using 139 fb –1 of data collected by the ATLAS experiment during proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The fiducial cross-section at √s = 13 TeV is measured to be σ = 1.267 ± 0.005 ± 0.053 pb, where the uncertainties reflect the limited number of data events and the systematic uncertainties, giving a total uncertainty of 4.2%. The cross-section is measured differentially as a function of variables characterizing the tt¯ system and additional radiation in the events. The results are compared with various Monte Carlo generators, including comparisons where the generators are reweighted to match a parton-level calculation at next-to-next-to-leading order. The reweighting improves the agreement between data and theory. The measured distribution of the top-quark transverse momentum is used to search for new physics in the context of the effective field theory framework. No significant deviation from the Standard Model is observed and limits are set on the Wilson coefficients of the dimension-six operators O tG and $O$ $^{(8)}_{tq}$, where the limits on the latter are the most stringent to date.

The potential of a TeV-scale muon-ion collider

We propose the development of a novel muon-proton and muon-nucleus collider facility at the TeV scale that is capable of performing precision deep inelastic scattering measurements in new regimes and providing a rich program in nuclear and particle physics. Such a facility could seed, or leverage, the development of a muon-antimuon collider and make use of the existing hadron accelerator infrastructure when sited at a facility such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, Fermilab, or CERN. Here, we discuss the possible energy and luminosity design parameters for several collider configurations, and illustrate the science potential with several studies on deep inelastic scattering kinematics, Higgs and vector boson production, top quark production, and beyond Standard Model leptoquark production. Detector design considerations and a possible road map toward development are also given.

Observation of a pseudoscalar excess at the top quark pair production threshold

A search for resonances in top quark pair ($t\overline{t}$) production in final states with two charged leptons and multiple jets is presented, based on proton–proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV , corresponding to 138 fb −1 . The analysis explores the invariant mass of the $t\overline{t}$ system and two angular observables that provide direct access to the correlation of top quark and antiquark spins. A significant excess of events is observed near the kinematic $t\overline{t}$ threshold compared to the non-resonant production predicted by fixed-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD). The observed enhancement is consistent with the production of a color-singlet pseudoscalar ($^1S^{[1]}_{0}$) quasi-bound toponium state, as predicted by non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics. Using a simplified model for $^1S^{[1]}_{0}$ toponium, the cross section of the excess above the pQCD prediction is measured to be $8.8^{+1.2}_{-1.4}$ pb.
