Non-perturbative production of fermionic dark matter from fast preheating

We investigate non-perturbative production of fermionic dark matter in the early universe. We study analytically the gravitational production mechanism accompanied by the coupling of fermions to the background inflaton field. The latter leads to the variation of effective fermion mass during preheating and makes the resulting spectrum and abundance sensitive to its parameters. Assuming fast preheating that completes in less than the inflationary Hubble time and no oscillations of the inflaton field after inflation, we find an abundant production of particles with energies ranging from the inflationary Hubble rate to the inverse duration of preheating. The produced fermions can account for all observed dark matter in a broad range of parameters. As an application of our analysis, we study non-perturbative production of fermionic dark matter in the model of Palatini Higgs inflation.

Geometric Delocalization in Two Dimensions

We demonstrate the existence of transient two-dimensional surfaces where a random-walking particle escapes to infinity in contrast to localization in standard flat two-dimensional space. We first prove that any rotationally symmetric two-dimensional membrane embedded in flat three-dimensional space cannot be transient. Then we formulate a criterion for the transience of a general asymmetric two-dimensional membrane. We use it to explicitly construct a class of transient two-dimensional manifolds with a nontrivial metric and height function but “zero average curvature,” which we dub “tablecloth manifolds.” The absence of the logarithmic infrared divergence of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in turn implies the absence of weak localization, nonexistence of bound states in shallow potentials, and breakdown of the Mermin-Wagner theorem and Kosterlitz-Thouless transition on the tablecloth manifolds, which may be realizable in both quantum simulators and corrugated two-dimensional materials.

Power-law inflation satisfies Penrose’s Weyl curvature hypothesis

Based on entropy considerations and the arrow of time Penrose argued that the Universe must have started in a special initial singularity with vanishing Weyl curvature. This is often interpreted to be at odds with inflation. Here we argue just the opposite, that Penrose’s persuasions are in fact consistent with inflation. Using the example of power law inflation, we show that inflation begins with a past null singularity, where Weyl tensor vanishes when the metric is initially exactly conformally flat. This initial state precisely obeys Penrose’s conditions. The initial null singularity breaks T-reversal spontaneously and picks the arrow of time. It can be regulated and interpreted as a creation of a universe from nothing, initially fitting in a bubble of Planckian size when it materializes. Penrose’s initial conditions are favored by the initial O(4) symmetry of the bubble, selected by extremality of the regulated Euclidean action. The predicted observables are marginally in tension with the data, but they can fit if small corrections to power law inflation kick in during the last 60⁢e-folds.

Higher spin mode stability for STU black hole backgrounds

This article studies mode stability of a four-dimensional rotating black hole with four pairwise equal U(1) charges derived in the framework of supergravity or the low energy string theory which is known now as STU black hole. We investigate bosonic perturbations in a proposed equation of the Teukolsky type for probe fields of different spins through the transformation technique devised by Whiting in 1989. Lastly, we introduce connection relations inspired by the work of Duztaş to prove the absence of unstable modes that solve the torsion-modified Dirac equation appropriate for this black hole background.

Supersymmetric lattice theories on curved space

We show how to construct Hamiltonian lattice theories with one exact supersymmetry on arbitrary triangulations of curved space in any number of dimensions. Both bosons and fermions satisfy discrete Kähler-Dirac equations. The quantization of the fermions proceeds by imposing conventional anticommutation relations while the bosons require a modification of the usual canonical commutator. On regular lattices we construct parity, time reversal and translation-by-one (shift) symmetries. We argue that the latter are generically noninvertible symmetries. We also show how to couple these degrees of freedom to background gauge fields which leads to a theory with enhanced supersymmetry.

QFT in curved spacetime from quantum gravity: Proper WKB decomposition of the gravitational component

Starting from a reanalysis of previous work, we construct the proper low-energy quantum field theory (QFT) limit of a full quantum gravity theory in the Born-Oppenheimer approach. We separate the gravitational sector into a classical background, given by a vacuum diagonal Bianchi I cosmology, and its quantum perturbations represented by the two graviton degrees of freedom; we further include quantum matter in the form of a test scalar field. We then implement a Born-Oppenheimer separation, where the gravitons and matter play the roles of “slow” and “fast” quantum components, respectively, and perform a WKB expansion in a Planckian parameter. The functional Schrödinger evolution for matter is recovered after averaging over quantum-gravitational effects, provided that a condition is imposed on the gravitons’ wave functional. Such a condition fixes the graviton dynamics and is equivalent to the purely gravitational Wheeler-DeWitt constraint imposed in previous approaches. Here, the main accomplishment of the present work is to clarify that QFT in curved spacetime can be recovered in the low-energy limit of quantum gravity only after averaging over the graviton degrees of freedom, in the spirit of effective field theory. Furthermore, it justifies a posteriori the implementation of the gravitational Wheeler-DeWitt equation on the “slow” gravitons’ wave functional rather than assuming its validity a priori.

Nonlocal Effective Field Theory and Its Applications

We review recent applications of nonlocal effective field theory, particularly focusing on nonlocal chiral effective theory and nonlocal quantum electrodynamics (QED), as well as an extension of nonlocal effective theory to curved spacetime. For the chiral effective theory, we discuss the calculation of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the nucleon at nonzero skewness, along with the corresponding gravitational (or mechanical) form factors, within the convolution framework. In the QED application, we extend the nonlocal formulation to construct the most general nonlocal QED interaction, in which both the propagator and fundamental QED vertex are modified due to the nonlocal Lagrangian, while preserving the Ward–Green–Takahashi identities. For consistency with the modified propagator, a solid quantization is proposed, and the nonlocal QED is applied to explain the lepton g−2 anomalies without the introduction of new particles beyond the standard model. Finally, with an extension of the chiral effective action to curved spacetime, we investigate the nonlocal energy–momentum tensor and gravitational form factors of the nucleon with a nonlocal pion–nucleon interaction.
