Infrared Imaging Using Thermally Stable HgTe/CdS Nanocrystals

Transferring nanocrystals (NCs) from the laboratory environment toward practical applications has raised new challenges. HgTe appears as the most spectrally tunable infrared colloidal platform. Its low-temperature synthesis reduces the growth energy cost yet also favors sintering. Once coupled to a read-out circuit, the Joule effect aggregates the particles, leading to a poorly defined optical edge and large dark current. Here, in this study, we demonstrate that CdS shells bring the expected thermal stability (no redshift upon annealing, reduced tendency to form amalgams, and preservation of photoconduction after an atomic layer deposition process). The electronic structure of these confined particles is unveiled using k.p self-consistent simulations showing a significant exciton binding energy of ~ 200 meV. After shelling, the material displays a p-type behavior that favors the generation of photoconductive gain. The latter is then used to increase the external quantum efficiency of an infrared imager, which now reaches 40% while presenting long-term stability.

Numerical gate synthesis for quantum heuristics on bosonic quantum processors

There is a recent surge of interest and insights regarding the interplay of quantum optimal control and variational quantum algorithms. We study the framework in the context of qudits which are, for instance, definable as controllable electromagnetic modes of a superconducting cavity system coupled to a transmon. By employing recent quantum optimal control approaches described in (Petersson and Garcia, 2021), we showcase control of single-qudit operations up to eight states, and two-qutrit operations, mapped respectively onto a single mode and two modes of the resonator. We discuss the results of numerical pulse engineering on the closed system for parametrized gates useful to implement Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) for qudits. The results show that high fidelity ( > 0.99) is achievable with sufficient computational effort for most cases under study, and extensions to multiple modes and open, noisy systems are possible. The tailored pulses can be stored and used as calibrated primitives for a future compiler in circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) systems.

Twisty-puzzle-inspired approach to Clifford synthesis

The problem of decomposing an arbitrary Clifford element into a sequence of Clifford gates is known as Clifford synthesis. Drawing inspiration from similarities between this and the famous Rubik's cube twisty puzzle, here we develop a machine learning approach for Clifford synthesis based on learning an approximation to the distance to the identity. This approach is probabilistic and computationally intensive. However, when a decomposition is successfully found, it often involves fewer gates than the decomposition methods used in the Qiskit decomposition protocol, which uses a combination of several well-known Clifford decomposition schemes. Additionally, our approach is much more flexible than existing algorithms in that arbitrary gate sets, device topologies, and gate fidelities may be incorporated, thus allowing for the approach to be tailored to a specific device.

Axion optical induction of antiferromagnetic order

Using circularly polarized light to control quantum matter is a highly intriguing topic in physics, chemistry and biology. Previous studies have demonstrated helicity-dependent optical control of chirality and magnetization, with important implications in asymmetric synthesis in chemistry; homochirality in biomolecules; and ferromagnetic spintronics. We report the surprising observation of helicity-dependent optical control of fully compensated antiferromagnetic order in two-dimensional even-layered MnBi 2 Te 4 , a topological axion insulator with neither chirality nor magnetization. Furthermore, to understand this control, we study an antiferromagnetic circular dichroism, which appears only in reflection but is absent in transmission. We show that the optical control and circular dichroism both arise from the optical axion electrodynamics. Our axion induction provides the possibility to optically control a family of PT-symmetric antiferromagnets (P, inversion; T, time-reversal) such as Cr 2 O 3 , even-layered CrI3 and possibly the pseudo-gap state in cuprates. In MnBi 2 Te 4 , this further opens the door for optical writing of a dissipationless circuit formed by topological edge states.

Bio-Nanobattery Development and Characterization

A bio-nanobattery is an electrical energy storage device that utilizes organic materials and processes on an atomic, or nanometer-scale. The bio-nanobattery under development at NASA s Langley Research Center provides new capabilities for electrical power generation, storage, and distribution as compared to conventional power storage systems. Most currently available electronic systems and devices rely on a single, centralized power source to supply electrical power to a specified location in the circuit. As electronic devices and associated components continue to shrink in size towards the nanometer-scale, a single centralized power source becomes impractical. Small systems, such as these, will require distributed power elements to reduce Joule heating, to minimize wiring quantities, and to allow autonomous operation of the various functions performed by the circuit. Our research involves the development and characterization of a bio-nanobattery using ferritins reconstituted with both an iron core (Fe-ferritin) and a cobalt core (Co-ferritin). Synthesis and characterization of the Co-ferritin and Fe-ferritin electrodes were performed, including reducing capability and the half-cell electrical potentials. Electrical output of nearly 0.5 V for the battery cell was measured. Ferritin utilizing other metallic cores were also considered to increase the overall electrical output. Two dimensional ferritin arrays were produced on various substrates to demonstrate the feasibility of a thin-film nano-scaled power storage system for distributed power storage applications. The bio-nanobattery will be ideal for nanometerscaled electronic applications, due to the small size, high energy density, and flexible thin-film structure. A five-cell demonstration article was produced for concept verification and bio-nanobattery characterization. Challenges to be addressed include the development of a multi-layered thin-film, increasing the energy density, dry-cell bionanobattery development, and selection of ferritin core materials to allow the broadest range of applications. The potential applications for the distributed power system include autonomously-operating intelligent chips, flexible thin-film electronic circuits, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), ultra-high density data storage devices, nanoelectromagnetics, quantum electronic devices, biochips, nanorobots for medical applications and mechanical nano-fabrication, etc.

Synthesis of single-qutrit circuits from Clifford+𝑅 gates

Here, we present two deterministic compilation algorithms for single-qutrit unitaries with O ( log 1 / ɛ ) gate depth. Each algorithm selects a nearby approximation to the target unitary and then exactly synthesizes the approximation over the Clifford + R basis. The first algorithm exhaustively searches over the group; while the second algorithm searches only for Householder reflections. The exhaustive search algorithm yields an average R count of 2.193 ( 11 ) + 8.621 ( 7 ) log 10 ( 1 / ɛ ) , albeit with a time complexity of O ( ɛ − 4.4 ) . The Householder search algorithm results in a larger average R count of 3.20 ( 13 ) + 10.77 ( 3 ) log 10 ( 1 / ɛ ) at a reduced time complexity of O ( ɛ − 0.42 ) , greatly extending the reach in ɛ . These costs correspond asymptotically to 35% and 69% more non-Clifford gates compared with synthesizing the same unitary with two qubits. Such initial results are encouraging for using the R gate as the nontransversal gate for qutrit-based computation.
