Quantum Image Denoising: A Framework via Boltzmann Machines, QUBO, and Quantum Annealing

We investigate a framework for binary image denoising via restricted Boltzmann machines (RBMs) that introduces a denoising objective in quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) form and is well-suited for quantum annealing. The denoising objective is attained by balancing the distribution learned by a trained RBM with a penalty term for derivations from the noisy image. We derive the statistically optimal choice of the penalty parameter assuming the target distribution has been well-approximated, and further suggest an empirically supported modification to make the method robust to that idealistic assumption. We also show under additional assumptions that the denoised images attained by our method are, in expectation, strictly closer to the noise-free images than the noisy images are. While we frame the model as an image denoising model, it can be applied to any binary data. As the QUBO formulation is well-suited for implementation on quantum annealers, we test the model on a D-Wave Advantage machine, and also test on data too large for current quantum annealers by approximating QUBO solutions through classical heuristics.

Strained-layer InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well lasers with high internal quantum efficiency

Low threshold current density strained-layer In(0.2)Ga(0.8)As/GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well lasers, emitting at 980 nm, have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Contrary to what has been reported for broad-area lasers with pseudomorphic InGaAs active layers grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, these layers exhibit a high internal quantum efficiency (about 90 percent). The maximum external differential quantum efficiency is 70 percent, limited by an anomalously high internal loss possibly caused by a large lateral spreading of the optical mode. In addition, experimental results supporting the theoretically predicted strain-induced reduction of the valence-band nonparabolicity and density of states are presented.

A Quantum Volume Metric for Qudit Quantum Computers

Qudit-based quantum computers, such as the high-Q superconducting radio frequency resonator cavities being pursued by the SQMS Center hosted at Fermilab, may provide computational advantages relative to qubit-based machines for some problems. However, the novel system’s hardware and software will present different errors that must be understood and mitigated, along with other unforeseen inefficiencies across the entire stack. It is essential to benchmark these qudit platforms against existing systems. We propose such a benchmark by generalizing the qubit-based quantum volume metric to qudit devices. In particular, we show that the performance depends on the available gateset used to compile unitary operations, as well as realistic noise sources.

Preparing Quantum Many-Body Scar States on Quantum Computers

Quantum many-body scar states are highly excited eigenstates of many-body systems that exhibit atypical entanglement and correlation properties relative to other eigenstates at the same energy density. Scar states also give rise to infinitely long-lived coherent dynamics when the system is prepared in a special initial state having finite overlap with them. Many models with exact scar states have been constructed, but the fate of scarred eigenstates and dynamics when these models are perturbed is difficult to study with classical computational techniques. In this work, we propose state preparation protocols for individual scar states in a particular model, as well as superpositions of them that give rise to coherent dynamics. For superpositions of scar states, we propose both a linear depth unitary and a finite-depth nonunitary state preparation protocol, the latter of which uses measurement and postselection to reduce the circuit depth. For individual scarred eigenstates, we propose a circuit architecture with polynomial depth. We also provide proof of principle implementations of these protocols on superconducting quantum hardware.

Decoherence in quantum mechanics and quantum cosmology

A sketch of the quantum mechanics for closed systems adequate for cosmology is presented. This framework is an extension and clarification of that of Everett and builds on several aspects of the post-Everett development. It especially builds on the work of Zeh, Zurek, Joos and Zeh, and others on the interactions of quantum systems with the larger universe and on the ideas of Griffiths, Omnes, and others on the requirements for consistent probabilities of histories.

Quantum state transfer in double-quantum-well devices

A Monte Carlo simulation of double-quantum-well (DQW) devices is presented in view of analyzing the quantum state transfer (QST) effect. Different structures, based on the AlGaAs/GaAs system, were simulated at 77 and 300 K and optimized in terms of electron transfer and device speed. The analysis revealed the dominant role of the impurity scattering for the QST. Different approaches were used for the optimization of QST devices and basic physical limitations were found in the electron transfer between the QWs. The maximum transfer of electrons from a high to a low mobility well was at best 20%. Negative differential resistance is hampered by the almost linear rather than threshold dependent relation of electron transfer on electric field. By optimizing the doping profile the operation frequency limit could be extended to 260 GHz.
