Development in tunable solid state lasers with high spectral purity, high efficiency and long lifetime for differential absorption lidar

The paper presents a review of tunable vibronic solid state lasers for DIAL measurements and provides new experimental results for tunable Ti:sapphire lasers, materials development, and spectral bandwidth narrowing through injection control. Pulsed injection control of a Ti:sapphire laser with a 2.5-pm narrow band pulsed dye laser and with another Ti:sapphire laser is demonstrated with nearly complete energy extraction, indicating homogeneous line broadening. The status of tunable solid state lasers in the 1.6-2.3 micron range for DIAL measurements of trace gases, and development trends for lasers with reduced cryogenic cooling needs, are included. The effects of laser gain on optical damage, energy extraction, and amplified spontaneous emission are indicated for several tunable lasers.

Logistics and operations implications of manual control of spacecraft docking maneuvers

The implications of logistics and operations on the manual control of spacecraft docking are discussed. The results of simulation studies to investigate fuel and time cost tradeoffs are reviewed and discussed. Comparisons of acceleration control and pulse control are presented to evaluate the effects of astronauts being instructed to use pulse mode for fuel conservation. The applications of the findings to moon and Mars missions are addressed.

Pulse modulated control synthesis for a flexible spacecraft

The describing function method is employed for the nonlinear control analysis and design of a flexible spacecraft equipped with pulse modulated reaction jets. The method provides a means of characterizing the pulse modulator in terms of its gain and phase for structural mode limit cycle analysis. Although the describing function method is inherently inexact and is not widely used in practice, a new way of utilizing it for practical control design problems is presented. It is shown that the approximations inherent in the method can be accounted as a modeling uncertainty for the nonlinear control robustness analysis. The pulse modulated control system of the Intelsat 5 spacecraft is used as an example to illustrate the concept and methodology developed in the paper. The nonlinear stability margins predicted by the describing function analysis are verified from nonlinear simulations.

Digitally controlled pulse-level discriminator operates over wide voltage range

Low power drain discriminator circuit generates an output pulse when an input pulse exceeds a discrete digitally controlled threshold voltage. The discriminator operates over a wide linear or nonlinear range of threshold levels. It uses several amplifier stages ahead of a fixed-reference threshold detector.

Pneumatic Flap Performance for a 2D Circulation Control Airfoil, Steady and Pulsed

Circulation Control technologies have been around for 65 years, and have been successfully demonstrated in laboratories and flight vehicles alike, yet there are few production aircraft flying today that implement these advances. Circulation Control techniques may have been overlooked due to perceived unfavorable trade offs of mass flow, pitching moment, cruise drag, noise, etc. Improvements in certain aspects of Circulation Control technology are the focus of this paper. This report will describe airfoil and blown high lift concepts that also address cruise drag reduction and reductions in mass flow through the use of pulsed pneumatic blowing on a Coanda surface. Pulsed concepts demonstrate significant reductions in mass flow requirements cor Circulation Control, as well as cruise drag concepts that equal or exceed conventional airfoil systems.

Characterization of Pilot Technique

Skilled pilots often use pulse control when controlling higher order (i.e. acceleration-command) vehicle dynamics. Pulsing does not produce a stick response that resembles what the human Crossover Model predicts. The Crossover Model (CM) assumes the pilot provides compensation necessary (lead or lag) such that the suite of display-human-vehicle approximates an integrator in the region of crossover frequency. However, it is shown that the CM does appear to drive the pilots pulsing behavior in a very predictable manner. Roughly speaking, the pilot generates pulses such that the area under the pulse (pulse amplitude multiplied by pulse width) is approximately equal to area under the hypothetical CM output. This can allow a pilot to employ constant amplitude pulsing so that only the pulse duration (width) is modulated a drastic simplification over the demands of continuous tracking. A pilot pulse model is developed, with which the parameters of the pilots internally-generated CM can be computed in real time for pilot monitoring and display compensation. It is also demonstrated that pursuit tracking may be activated when pulse control is employed.

A wide angle search technique for a 10.6 micron ladar

A ladar (laser radar) sensor designed around a pulsed passively Q-switched CO2 laser, capable of a efficient and rapid scans with a narrow beam over a wide field of view, is considered for surveillance and tracking applications in space. The output is a train of narrow pulses with a controllable pulse repetition rate. A resonant vibrating mirror in back of a classical Gregorian telescope, and a plane pointing mirror in front for beam steering, are used in scanning. Scan pulse sequences are described and illustrated. The 10.6 micron ladar set is under consideration as baseline sensor for various space rendezvous and docking applications.

Improved transistorized AC motor controller for battery powered urban electric passenger vehicles

An ac motor controller for an induction motor electric vehicle drive system was designed, fabricated, tested, evaluated, and cost analyzed. A vehicle performance analysis was done to establish the vehicle tractive effort-speed requirements. These requirements were then converted into a set of ac motor and ac controller requirements. The power inverter is a three-phase bridge using power Darlington transistors. The induction motor was optimized for use with an inverter power source. The drive system has a constant torque output to base motor speed and a constant horsepower output to maximum speed. A gear shifting transmission is not required. The ac controller was scaled from the base 20 hp (41 hp peak) at 108 volts dec to an expanded horsepower and battery voltage range. Motor reversal was accomplished by electronic reversal of the inverter phase sequence. The ac controller can also be used as a boost chopper battery charger. The drive system was tested on a dynamometer and results are presented. The current-controlled pulse width modulation control scheme yielded improved motor current waveforms. The ac controller favors a higher system voltage.

Pulsed injection control of a titanium-doped sapphire laser

Injection control of a tunable Ti:sapphire laser using a narrow-bandwidth pulsed dye laser operating at a wavelength removed from the peak of the Ti:sapphire-laser gain curve is reported. The free-running Ti:sapphire laser had broadband laser emission from 750 to 790 nm. Injection at 727 nm resulted in essentially complete energy extraction at that wavelength in a 2.5-pm bandwidth matching the injection source.

High-speed assembly language (80386/80387) programming for laser spectra scan control and data acquisition providing improved resolution water vapor spectroscopy

An assembly language program using the Intel 80386 CPU and 80387 math co-processor chips was written to increase the speed of data gathering and processing, and provide control of a scanning CW ring dye laser system. This laser system is used in high resolution (better than 0.001 cm-1) water vapor spectroscopy experiments. Laser beam power is sensed at the input and output of white cells and the output of a Fabry-Perot. The assembly language subroutine is called from Basic, acquires the data and performs various calculations at rates greater than 150 faster than could be performed by the higher level language. The width of output control pulses generated in assembly language are 3 to 4 microsecs as compared to 2 to 3.7 millisecs for those generated in Basic (about 500 to 1000 times faster). Included are a block diagram and brief description of the spectroscopy experiment, a flow diagram of the Basic and assembly language programs, listing of the programs, scope photographs of the computer generated 5-volt pulses used for control and timing analysis, and representative water spectrum curves obtained using these programs.
