The planetary exploration program - A preview of plans for the 21st century

Interplanetary missions which may be pursued in the late 20th and early 21st centuries are discussed, with emphasis on possible roles for the Space Station in the IOC and in growth configurations. The Station could serve as an assembly, fueling and tracking base for interplanetary missions, first unmanned and then manned.

Model based trajectory planning using preview

The control of manipulators is seen here as a two-level process. A method is described to convert information available at the programming level into trajectories suitable to be tracked by a servo control system. The goal of the servo is to absorb the unmodeled dynamics. Tracking accuracy will depend mainly on the acceleration demand of the nominal trajectory setpoint, in particular, the actuator output demand must remain bounded. Our scheme adaptively takes into consideration at the trajectory computation level the dynamics of the underlying system, dynamically available information acquired through sensors, various types of constraints, such as path accuracy, and manipulator optimization. This scheme is meant to be implemented on-line, to drive mechanical systems such as manipulators. It is developed in the context of a multi-manipulator programming and control environment for space applications developed as part of a collaborative effort between McGill University and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

A preview of a microgravity laser light scattering instrument

The development of a versatile, miniature, modular light scattering instrument to be used in microgravity is described. The instrument will measure microscopic particles in the size range of thirty angstroms to above three microns. This modular instrument permits several configurations, each optimized for a particular experiment. In particular, a multiangle instrument will probably be mounted in a rack in the Space Shuttle and on the Space Station. It is possible that a Space Shuttle glove-box and a lap-top computer containing a correlator card can be used to perform a number of experiments and to demonstrate the technology needed for more elaborate investigations.

Simulating Welding-Robot Trajectories For Previewing

New method devised for generating welding-tool paths; parts of off-line-programmed test trajectories of computer-controlled welding robot. Reduces time necessary to set up simulation of welding process and eliminates some errors by reducing amount of repetition. Provides visual feedback similar to graphical simulation used in off-line-programming process after development of model.

A preview of a modular surface light scattering instrument with autotracking optics

NASA's Advanced Technology Development (ATD) program is sponsoring the development of a new generation of surface light scattering hardware. This instrument is designed to non-invasively measure the surface response function of liquids over a wide range of operating conditions while automatically compensating for a sloshing surface. The surface response function can be used to compute surface tension, properties of monolayers present, viscosity, surface tension gradient and surface temperature. The instrument uses optical and electronic building blocks developed for the laser light scattering program at NASA Lewis along with several unique surface light scattering components. The emphasis of this paper is the compensation for bulk surface motion (slosh). Some data processing background information is also included.

Preview of the NASA NNWG NDE Sample Preparation Handbook

This viewgraph presents a step-by-step how-to fabrication documentation of every kind of sample that is fabricated for MSFC by UA Huntsville, including photos and illustrations. The tabulation of what kind of samples are being fabricated for what NDE method, detailed instructions/documentation of the inclusion/creation of defects, detailed specifications for materials, processes, and equipment, case histories and/or experiences with the different fabrication methods and defect inclusion techniques, discussion of pitfalls and difficulties associated with sample fabrication and defect inclusion techniques, and a discussion of why certain fabrication techniques are needed as related to the specific NDE methods are included in this presentation.

System and Method for Aiding Pilot Preview, Rehearsal, Review, and Real-Time Visual Acquisition of Flight Mission Progress

Embodiments of the invention permit flight paths (current and planned) to be viewed from various orientations to provide improved path and terrain awareness via graphical two-dimensional or three-dimensional perspective display formats. By coupling the flight path information with a terrain database, uncompromising terrain awareness relative to the path and ownship is provided. In addition, missed approaches, path deviations, and any navigational path can be reviewed and rehearsed before performing the actual task. By rehearsing a particular mission, check list items can be reviewed, terrain awareness can be highlighted, and missed approach procedures can be discussed by the flight crew. Further, the use of Controller Pilot Datalink Communications enables data-linked path, flight plan changes, and Air Traffic Control requests to be integrated into the flight display of the present invention.

A Preview of the OCO-2 Spatial and Temporal Sampling Strategy

For routine science observations, the OC0-2 spacecraft bus points the instrument bore sight either at the local nadir (85 < 85deg) or at the glint spot (85 < 81 deg) and collects -106 soundings/day over the sunlit hemisphere. center dot Nadir observations: expected to yield more spatially-homogeneous optical paths in partially cloudy regions and over topographically rough land regions center dot Glint observations are expected to yield (much) higher SNR over dark ocean or ice covered surfaces. center dot For both glint and nadir observations, the spacecraft performs a yaw maneuver to orient the long axis of the spectrometer slits perpendicular to the principle plane center dot The nominal plan is to alternate between glint and nadir observations on alternate 16-day ground repeat cycles, but this strategy may be modified to maximize coverage Target observations: For calibration and validation, the spacecraft bus can also point the instrument bore sight at a stationary surface target center dot Collects up to 12,000 soundings at observing zenith angles from +75deg GEO CL-
