Chiral rank-$k$ truncations for the multigrid preconditioner of Wilson fermions in lattice QCD

We present a modification to the setup algorithm for the multigrid preconditioner of Wilson fermions in lattice QCD. A larger number of test vectors than that used in conventional multigrid is generated by the smoother. This set of test vectors is then truncated by a singular value decomposition on the chiral components of the test vectors, which are subsequently used to form the prolongation and restriction matrices of the multigrid hierarchy. This modification is demonstrated to improve the convergence of linear equations on an anisotropic lattice with 𝑚𝜋 ≈ 280 MeV from the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration and an isotropic lattice with 𝑚𝜋 ≈ 220 MeV from the MILC Collaboration. The lattice volume dependence of the method is also examined.

Domain decomposition preconditioners for the spectral collocation method

Several block iteration preconditioners are proposed and analyzed for the solution of elliptic problems by spectral collocation methods in a region partitioned into several rectangles. It is shown that convergence is achieved with a rate which does not depend on the polynomial degree of the spectral solution. The iterative methods here presented can be effectively implemented on multiprocessor systems due to their high degree of parallelism.

On conjugate gradient type methods and polynomial preconditioners for a class of complex non-Hermitian matrices

Conjugate gradient type methods are considered for the solution of large linear systems Ax = b with complex coefficient matrices of the type A = T + i(sigma)I where T is Hermitian and sigma, a real scalar. Three different conjugate gradient type approaches with iterates defined by a minimal residual property, a Galerkin type condition, and an Euclidian error minimization, respectively, are investigated. In particular, numerically stable implementations based on the ideas behind Paige and Saunder's SYMMLQ and MINRES for real symmetric matrices are proposed. Error bounds for all three methods are derived. It is shown how the special shift structure of A can be preserved by using polynomial preconditioning. Results on the optimal choice of the polynomial preconditioner are given. Also, some numerical experiments for matrices arising from finite difference approximations to the complex Helmholtz equation are reported.

Symmetric Random Butterfly Transform (SRBT) Based Preconditioner

Summary of work using Symmetric Random Butterfly Transformation (SRBT) in conjunction with Incomplete LDL T factorization as a preconditioner for FGMRES solver as a way of solving linear systems arising from interior point methods applied to power system problems. These linear systems have proven difficult to parallelize and this represents a possible route forward.

Augmented weak forms and element-by-element preconditioners: Efficient iterative strategies for structural finite elements. A preliminary study

A weak formulation in structural analysis that provides well conditioned matrices suitable for iterative solutions is presented. A mixed formulation ensures the proper representation of the problem and the constitutive relations are added in a penalized form. The problem is solved by a double conjugate gradient algorithm combined with an element by element approximate factorization procedure. The double conjugate gradient strategy resembles Uzawa's variable-length type algorithms the main difference is the presence of quadratic terms in the mixed variables. In the case of shear deformable beams these terms ensure that the proper finite thickness solution is obtained.

A Study of Multigrid Preconditioners Using Eigensystem Analysis

The convergence properties of numerical schemes for partial differential equations are studied by examining the eigensystem of the discrete operator. This method of analysis is very general, and allows the effects of boundary conditions and grid nonuniformities to be examined directly. Algorithms for the Laplace equation and a two equation model hyperbolic system are examined.
