Comparison of Orientation Mapping in SEM and TEM

In this work, multiple experimental configurations for performing nanoscale orientation mapping are compared to determine their fidelity to the true 3D microstructure of a sample. Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction (TKD) experiments in an SEM and nanobeam diffraction (NBD) experiments in a TEM were performed on thin electrodeposited hard Au films with two different microstructures. The Au samples either have a grain size that is >50 nm or <20 nm. The same regions of the samples were measured with TKD apparatuses at 30 kV in an SEM with detectors in the horizontal and vertical configurations and in the TEM at 300 kV. Under the proper conditions, we demonstrate all three configurations can produce data of equivalent quality. Each method has strengths and challenges associated with its application and representation of the true microstructure. The conditions needed to obtain high-quality data for each acquisition method and the challenges associated with each will be discussed.

Outgassing of implanted He via short circuit transport along phase and grain boundaries in vapor co-deposited Cu-W nanocomposites

We investigate the response of physical vapor co-deposited copper (Cu)-tungsten (W) nanocomposites to helium (He) implantation. Nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) reveals that a substantial fraction of He implanted into these materials escapes during implantation. Analysis of nanocomposite microstructure shows that the He loss is likely due to its transport out of the material by diffusion along phase and grain boundaries. Lastly, our findings suggest that solid-state interfaces such as phase and grain boundaries are short circuit diffusion pathways for transport of He.

Quantification of Dynamic Scattering Effects in Molecular Crystals using Large Angle Rocking Beam Electron Diffraction

Electron crystallography provides a pathway to solve structure of small crystals (< 1um) in size, and thus overcomes difficult synthesis constraints involved in growing large crystals. Generally, electron diffraction data is collected in the form of integrated intensity using continuous rotation or by precession. The measured intensities in 3D are utilized for structure solution. Using this approach, structure solution of difficult crystals, such as small crystals of zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, molecular crystals, and proteins , can be solved by electron diffraction. However, electron structure solutions are regularly reported with higher Rvalues than x-ray or neutron diffraction. While similar structures are found despite the high R-values, the differences in the measure intensity and theory calculated intensity limit information that can be extracted by electron diffraction. Previous work demonstrated that including multiple-scattering effects significantly reduce the R-values . Thus, it is critical to be able to quantify the dynamical diffraction effects in molecular crystals.
