Antenna optimization of single beam microwave systems for the solar power satellite

A generalized antenna design technique is applied to the unique environmental requirements pertaining to solar power satellite (SPS) systems. Optimal illumination tapers and antenna/rectenna sizings are generated which allow increased transmit powers and lower electricity costs while minimizing sidelobe levels to meet a 0.01 mW/sq cm environmental standard. These optimal tapers also provide other advantages over the 10 dB Gaussian reference system.

Automated distribution system management for multichannel space power systems

A NASA sponsored study of space power distribution system technology is in progress to develop an autonomously managed power system (AMPS) for large space power platforms. The multichannel, multikilowatt, utility-type power subsystem proposed presents new survivability requirements and increased subsystem complexity. The computer controls under development for the power management system must optimize the power subsystem performance and minimize the life cycle cost of the platform. A distribution system management philosophy has been formulated which incorporates these constraints. Its implementation using a TI9900 microprocessor and FORTH as the programming language is presented. The approach offers a novel solution to the perplexing problem of determining the optimal combination of loads which should be connected to each power channel for a versatile electrical distribution concept.

Antenna optimization and cost consideration for the Solar Power Satellite microwave system

The sizing, criteria, cost analysis, and optimized taper of the Solar Power Satellite (SPS) transmitting antenna are discussed. The sizing parameters considered were a thermal limit of 23 kW/sq m in the antenna, a peak power density of 23 mW/sq cm in the ionosphere, and cost effectiveness. Cost schedules and equations are presented for the SPS, and four antenna tapers are analyzed and compared, including the reference 10 dB Gaussian taper. An even powered quadratic series is formulated to minimize electricity cost and stay within thermal and ionospheric power level limits. The optimized Johnson Space Center taper is found to display the lowest energy costs, 4% below the 10 dB Gaussian, and can deliver 5.69 GW at 45.4 mills/kWh to the grid. Further studies are indicated for the optimal antenna and rectenna sizes

Lightning location system supervising Swedish power transmission network

For electric utilities, the ability to prevent or minimize lightning damage on personnel and power systems is of great importance. Therefore, the Swedish State Power Board, has been using data since 1983 from a nationwide lightning location system (LLS) for accurately locating lightning ground strikes. Lightning data is distributed and presented on color graphic displays at regional power network control centers as well as at the national power system control center for optimal data use. The main objectives for use of LLS data are: supervising the power system for optimal and safe use of the transmission and generating capacity during periods of thunderstorms; warning service to maintenance and service crews at power line and substations to end operations hazardous when lightning; rapid positioning of emergency crews to locate network damage at areas of detected lightning; and post analysis of power outages and transmission faults in relation to lightning, using archived lightning data for determination of appropriate design and insulation levels of equipment. Staff have found LLS data useful and economically justified since the availability of power system has increased as well as level of personnel safety.

Robe Development for Electrical Conductivity Analysis in an Electron Gun Produced Helium Plasma

The use of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power conversion systems, potentially coupled with a fission power source, is currently being investigated as a driver for an advanced propulsion system, such as a plasma thruster. The efficiency of a MHD generator is strongly dependent on the electrical conductivity of the fluid that passes through the generator; power density increases as fluid conductivity increases. Although traditional MHD flows depend on thermal ionization to enhance the electrical conductivity, ionization due to nuclear interactions may achieve a comparable or improved conductivity enhancement while avoiding many of the limitations inherent to thermal ionization. Calculations suggest that nuclear-enhanced electrical conductivity increases as the neutron flux increases; conductivity of pure He-3 greater than 10 mho/m may be achievable if exposed to a flux greater than 10(exp 12) neutrons/cm2/s.) However, this remains to be demonstrated experimentally. An experimental facility has been constructed at the Propulsion Research Center at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, using helium as the test fluid. High energy electrons will be used to simulate the effects of neutron-induced ionization of helium gas to produce a plasma. These experiments will be focused on diagnosis of the plasma in a virtually static system; results will be applied to future tests with a MHD system. Initial experiments will utilize a 50 keV electron gun that can operate at up to a current of 200 micro A. Spreading the electron beam over a four inch diameter window results in an electron flux of 1.5x 10(exp 13) e/sq cm/s. The equivalent neutron flux that would produce the same ionization fraction in helium is 1x10(exp 12) n/sq cm/s. Experiments will simulate the neutron generated plasma modeled by Bitteker, which takes into account the products of thermal neutron absorption in He-3, and includes various ion species in estimating the conductivity of the resulting plasma. Several different probes will be designed and implemented to verify the plasma kinetics model. System parameters and estimated operating ranges are summarized. The predicted ionization fraction, electron density, and conductivity levels are provided in for an equivalent neutron flux of 1x10(exp 12) n/cm2/s. Understanding the complex plasma kinetics throughout a MHD channel is necessary to design an optimal power conversion system for space propulsion applications. The proposed experiments seek to fully characterize the helium plasma and to determine the reliability of each measurement technique, such that they may be applied to more advanced MHD studies. The expected value of each plasma parameter determined from theoretical models will be verified experimentally by several independent techniques to determine the most reliable method of obtaining each parameter. The results of these experiments will be presented in the final paper.

A Solar-Powered Enceladus Mission

We present the results of a concept design study for a New Frontiers or small Flagship-class mission to Enceladus, using solar power. By concentrating on the science objectives most critical for a Cassini follow-on, this mission maximizes the science return while maintaining a power consumption level that can be provided by a practical solar power system. The optimized instrument payload is the product of a broad science community-based Science Definition Team Study. The spacecraft and mission designs are the products of studies carried out by the GSFC Mission Design Lab and Ball Aerospace. In addition to the low isolation at Enceladus, its location deep in Saturn's gravity well makes it a challenging target to reach, meaning that careful consideration must be given to spacecraft mass and the potential mission types. This presentation summarizes the mission science objectives and payload, the dynamical work, and the notional operations plan of this mission.

MACOS Version 3.31

Version 3.31 of Modeling and Analysis for Controlled Optical Systems (MACOS) has been released. MACOS is an easy-to-use computer program for modeling and analyzing the behaviors of a variety of optical systems, including systems that have large, segmented apertures and are aligned with the technology of wavefront sensing and control. Two previous versions were described in "Improved Software for Modeling Controlled Optical Systems" (NPO-19841) NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 21, No. 12 (December 1997), page 42 and "Optics Program Modified for Multithreaded Parallel Computing" (NPO-40572) NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 30, No. 1 (January 2006) page 13a. The present version incorporates the following enhancements over prior versions: a) A powerful system-optimization facility includes algorithms for linear, nonlinear, unconstrained, and constrained optimization of optical systems under a variety of settings. b) There is now enhanced capability to perturb optical components individually and on subsystem levels, and to optimize system performance by adjusting selected individual components as well as subsystems. c) Capabilities for modeling a variety of new optical aperture types have been added. d) Effects of multilayer thin-film coats on optical surfaces can now be taken into account when tracing polarized rays. e) Major software-engineering work was performed to make MACOS more reliable, flexible, and manageable for purposes of maintenance and further development.
