Extended interaction length laser-driven acceleration in a tunable dielectric structure

The development of long, tunable structures is critical to increasing energy gain in laser-driven dielectric accelerators (DLAs). Here we combine pulse-front-tilt illumination with slab-geometry structures assembled by precisely aligning off-the-shelf 4 mm long transmission gratings to achieve up to 200 keV energy modulation for 6 MeV injected electrons. The effective interaction length is longer than 1 mm, limited by the dephasing of the accelerated particles in the structure. The piezo-based independent mounting system for the gratings allows tuning of the gap and field distribution inside the structure. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Quantum Entanglement between Optical and Microwave Photonic Qubits

Entanglement is an extraordinary feature of quantum mechanics. Sources of entangled optical photons were essential to test the foundations of quantum physics through violations of Bell’s inequalities. More recently, entangled many-body states have been realized via strong nonlinear interactions in microwave circuits with superconducting qubits. Here, we demonstrate a chip-scale source of entangled optical and microwave photonic qubits. Our device platform integrates a piezo-optomechanical transducer with a superconducting resonator which is robust under optical illumination. We drive a photon-pair generation process and employ a dual-rail encoding intrinsic to our system to prepare entangled states of microwave and optical photons. We place a lower bound on the fidelity of the entangled state by measuring microwave and optical photons in two orthogonal bases. This entanglement source can directly interface telecom wavelength time-bin qubits and gigahertz frequency superconducting qubits, two well-established platforms for quantum communication and computation, respectively. Temperature and Strain Sensing Characteristics of a 128° YX-Cut LiNbO 3 Rayleigh-Mode SAW Sensor From Room to Cryogenic Temperatures

Accurate, passive, and wireless monitoring of cryogenic hardware is essential for high-energy physics, space propulsion, and biomedical instrumentation. Here, this study quantifies the coupled temperature-strain behavior of Rayleigh-mode surface acoustic-wave (SAW) delay-line sensors fabricated on 128° YX-cut LiNbO 3 . A nonlinear finite element (FE) model incorporating Varshni-based elastic constants, higher-order thermal expansion, and temperature-dependent piezo- and dielectric coefficients was developed and validated experimentally between 280K and 80K. Free-standing (first test condition) and bonded/wired (second test condition) devices exhibited indistinguishable thermal responses; the average temperature coefficient of delay (TCD) in the critical cryogenic range from 130K down to 80K differed by only 0.15 ppm/K (0.32%), confirming that bonding-induced stress is negligible. Over 280-80K the measured TCD was 61.77 ppm/K, while the FE model predicted an equivalent temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF) of −62.74 ppm/K with an overall coefficient of determination R2 = 0.998. In the critical cryogenic interval 130-80K the TCD fell to 47.66 ppm/K, indicating improved thermal stability at low temperature. Controlled loading (0-300 με) revealed a strain coefficient of delay (SCD) that rises from 0.53 ± 0.02 ppm/με at 300K to 1.05 ± 0.02 ppm/με at 80K. This modest sensitivity confirms that, for temperature sensing, strain is a second-order perturbation above 135K but must be compensated at deeper cryogenic levels. Overall, this work establishes a predictive multiphysics model together with repeatable wired measurements that confirm the suitability of SAW sensors for temperature and strain monitoring in extreme cryogenic environments, while also providing a baseline for future wireless implementations.

Testing of the SSR2 SRF cavity tuner for PIP-II at 2 K

The PIP-II linac will include thirty-five 325 MHz Single Spoke Resonators Type 2 (SSR2) cavities. Each cavity will be equipped with a tuner for resonance control. The tuner consists of mechanical frame with a motor for coarse frequency tuning and a piezoelectric actuator for fine frequency tuning. The tuner was tested for the first time at Fermilab on an SSR2 cavity. This dressed cavity-tuner system was tested at the single spoke testing cryo-stat (STC) in Fermilab at 2 K. The tuner performance was evaluated and is presented. Lastly, cavity-tuner mechanical modes were measured via the piezos.

Axion Dark Matter EXperiment 2A Cavity Characterization

The axion is a highly motivated dark matter candidate for its capacity to solve the strong CP problem in quantum chromodynamics. To detect the axion, the 2A phase of the Axion Dark Matter EXperiment (ADMX) utilizes four identical cylindrical resonant cavities that can detect the photons converted from axions in a strong magnetic field. We found the quality factors for various tunings in cavity D, and we also learned that the piezo motors are not currently equipped to handle cryogenic temperatures. However, the measured quality factors are much more promising than those shown in the last 2A cooldown, improving by about a factor of five.

Calibration and Measurement techniques in the LLRF systems of the Fermilab PIP-II Linac

he PIP-II Accelerator is an 800 MeV superconducting Linac in the injection chain of the Fermilab accelerator complex. The LLRF systems are a based on two different hardware platforms controlling a variety of cavity types and resonance control systems including temperature, pneumatic and piezzo tuners. The various calibrations required prior to beam operation include, signal power, gradient, amplifier characterization, cavity Q measurement and detune constants. Measurements such as piezzo capacitance, cavity piezo transfer function help in determining tuner health and in devising microphonics control strategies. These measurement and calibration methods of the PIP-II LLRF system are discussed here.
