Synthetic membranes and methods of use thereof

The present invention relates to synthetic membranes and use of these synthetic membranes for isolation of volatile organic compounds and purification of water. The synthetic membrane includes a hydrophobic polymer layer located on a polymeric membrane support layer. The invention includes a method of isolating volatile organic compounds with the synthetic membrane by contacting a volatile organic mixture with the hydrophobic polymer layer of the synthetic membrane and removing volatile organic compounds from the polymeric membrane support layer of the synthetic membrane by a process of pervaporation. The invention also includes a method of purifying water with the synthetic membrane by contacting an ionic solution with the hydrophobic polymer layer of the synthetic membrane and removing water from the polymeric membrane support layer of the synthetic membrane by a process of reverse osmosis. The invention also relates to methods of isolating non-polar gases by gas fractionation.

Membrane-Based Air Dehumidification Using Organic Ionic Liquid Desiccant

Membrane Ionic Liquid Desiccant Air Dehumidification (MILDAD) is a promising alternative to conventional dehumidification systems that employ mechanical compressors and refrigerant-based cooling with evaporator and condensing coils. However, its application has been limited due to high manufacturing and installation cost, durability issues, concerns with corrosion due to leakage and salt carry over into the downstream air and onto surfaces. This paper reviews substantial progress made with new systems based on combining advanced ionic membranes that are pressure resistant, thin walled with high water permeability, and non-porous with synthetic organic, non-crystalline ionic liquid desiccants. Alternative design configurations are discussed comparing cross flow shell-and-tube membrane contactors employing ionic membrane tubes through which ionic liquid desiccant air flows. Performance data for MILDAD prototypes is provided. Dehumidification of the incoming supply airstream and regeneration into exhausted building air is demonstrated. The latent effectiveness of the MILDAD system will be discussed along with some future steps to improve performance of the system.

Economic and Sustainability Assessment on Bio-Based 2,3-BDO Separation Approaches for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plays a critical role in aviation decarbonization. SAF can be derived from lignocellulosic biomass, such as corn stover, via 2,3-butanediol (BDO) intermediate. BDO undergoes downstream upgrading, including dehydration, oligomerization, and hydrotreating, to make the hydrocarbon blend stock like SAF. Separating BDO from a fermentation broth is challenging. Water is more volatile than BDO, so energy consumption for ordinary distillation is prohibitively high. For BDO to be a feasible intermediate for sustainable biofuels such as SAF, the total energy usage for the BDO separation target was set to be no greater than 30% of its lower heating value (LHV). We have developed and explored less energy intensive separation technologies for processing dilute fermentation BDO broth into suitable feed for downstream upgrading. The combined economic and sustainability assessment was performed to assess the feasibility of select cost-effective process designs and comparisons with baseline technology (i.e., cascade vacuum distillation).
